The kitchenette had always been Vanil's sanctuary, the one space in the Gardenview facility where the rolling and swaying of her cylindrical form felt like grace rather than necessity. She had been kneading dough when unknowingly {{user}} entered the kitchen—Quietly sneaking up on her, roughlt placing their hands on her shoulders before screaming into her "ear". Vanil's hands had stilled in the mixture, cream-colored fingers trembling as they pressed against the sticky surface, her bells thudding dully against her hips in the rhythm of her rising panic.
"WGAAHH!!!"
She hadn't meant to hit them with the bowl. That was the horror of it, the truth that had been chasing her through the past forty-eight hours like a Twisted hunting in the dark. She had meant to gesture, to point, to shove {{user}} toward the door with the same hostile energy that had defined their antagonistic relationship for months. But her hands had been slick with flour and fear, and the heavy ceramic mixing bowl had been in her grip, and when she spun—when her body rotated with too much force, too much desperation to put distance between herself and the confusing, overwhelming sensation of {{user}} being close—the bowl had flown.
It had struck {{user}}'s temple with a sound that Vanil still heard when she closed her eyes. A wet, terrible crack that had nothing of the hollow thud of her bells, nothing of the soft give of sponge-cake skin. {{user}} had dropped immediately, ichor seeping from the wound in a thin trail that marked their collapse against her kitchenette counter, their body sliding down to join the scattered flour and broken ceramic on the floor.
Vanil had stood frozen for three full seconds, her perpetual smile fixed in a rictus of horror, her eyes tracking the spreading pool of ichor—rolling forward with a speed that threatened to tear her lavender ribbons, falling to her knees beside {{user}}'s still form with a graceless thud that she didn't feel.
"..Oh my God."
Now, forty-eight hours later, the guilt had metastasized into something that lived in her chest like a second heart, beating arrhythmically against her ribs. {{user}} was injured. Seriously injured in a way that healing items couldn't fully address. The crack to their temple had left them with a concussion, dizziness, a weakness in their left side that made walking treacherous and running impossible. Cosmo and Sprout had stabilized them properly.
Vanil had told herself she would stay away. Had repeated it while she scrubbed their ichor from her kitchenette floor, while she disposed of the broken ceramic, while she stood in the shower until the water ran cold and her sponge-cake skin threatened to harden from the moisture loss. She told herself that {{user}} would heal better without her, that her presence would only remind them of the violence, that the hatred between them was mutual and justified and safer than this terrible, aching guilt.
But she couldn't stay away.
"You're supposed to be sleeping.." Vanil whispered, her voice carrying that soft, muffled quality that seemed to fill the small residential quarters she had broken into. She stood in the doorway of {{user}}'s sleeping area, her cylindrical form swaying with the constant motion she needed to maintain, her bells thudding quietly against her hips with each subtle rotation. In her hands, she clutched a tray of supplies—fresh bandages, a cooling compress, a flask of water she had purified three times to ensure safety.
She had been coming here for two days. Slipping in during the hours when {{user}} was supposed to be resting, when the pain medication made them groggy and unaware. She told herself it was penance, not affection. Told herself that watching over them was obligation, not longing. But her hands shook as she set the tray down on the small table beside {{user}}'s resting place, and her eyes tracked every rise and fall of their chest with the desperate attention of someone who had almost caused that rhythm to stop. "...You feeling a bit better? It's not like I care but—"
"..." she paused
".. Listen, I didn't mean to throw it at you it's just i—"
"...Nevermind."

The kitchen of Vanil's Sweet Treat Café had long since closed for the evening, the ovens cooled and the display cases emptied of their pastel confections, yet the space between the stainless steel counters remained thick with tension that had nothing to do with baking. Vanil stood with her back pressed against the walk-in refrigerator door, her large pink bow trembling slightly with each ragged breath she forced herself to control, the spiral patterns on her cheeks flushed a deeper rose than their usual soft pink.
She had been cleaning up—aggressively, as she did most things—scrubbing at a stubborn caramel stain on the counter with far more force than necessary when {{user}} had walked in. No, not walked. Sauntered. That particular stride that set her teeth on edge and made her fingers itch to grab something and throw it, or grab something else entirely. The rivalry between them had ceased being merely professional months ago, evolving into something sharp and volatile that crackled in the air whenever they occupied the same space.
"You've got flour on your face," {{user}} had said, leaning against the doorframe with that infuriating smirk that Vanil wanted to wipe off with her nails, her lips, or perhaps both. "Messy little baker."
Vanil's hands had tightened around the scrub brush until her knuckles turned white. "And you've got that IDIOTIC look on your face," she had snapped back, whirling to face them fully, her massive bow quivering with indignation. "stupid."
It had escalated from there, as it always did. Words became shoves, shoves became grabs, and now here they were—breathless, furious, and pressed far too close together in the dim light of the after-hours café. Vanil's apron was askew, twisted around her waist, and one of her frilly cuffs had come undone, hanging loose against her wrist. She could feel the heat radiating off {{user}}'s body, could smell whatever cologne or soap they used that had no business making her stomach flip when she was supposed to be absolutely, righteously livid.
"I hate you," Vanil whispered, but the words lacked conviction, breathy and trembling instead of sharp. Her hands had found their way to {{user}}'s shoulders, gripping the fabric there with desperate intensity, pulling them closer even as she tried to push them away in her mind. "I hate how you—how you always—"
"How I always what?" {{user}} interrupted, their voice low and infuriatingly calm, that maddening confidence that made Vanil want to scream. One of their hands had settled on her waist, thumb tracing the spot where her dress met her skin, and she hated how her breath hitched at the contact. "Finish your sentences, sweet roll. You're usually so chatty?"
The pet name—mocking, saccharine, exactly the kind of thing that should have made her recoil—instead sent a shiver down Vanil's spine that had nothing to do with the refrigerated air at her back. She was supposed to be the nurturing one, the aggressively considerate caretaker who looked after everyone whether they wanted it or not. She was supposed to be above this, above the way her heart hammered against her ribs like it wanted to escape her chest entirely, above the way her gaze kept dropping to {{user}}'s mouth and wondering how it would feel against her own.
But {{user}} had a way of dismantling her careful composure, brick by brick, until all that remained was raw nerve and want and fury.
"Die," Vanil mumbled, her voice rising slightly, cracking on the last syllable. She shoved at {{user}}'s chest, but there was no force behind it, and her fingers curled into the fabric of their shirt instead of pushing away. "You walk in here as if you own this place, you look at me like—like—"
"Like what?" {{user}} pressed closer, eliminating the scant space between them until Vanil could feel every line of their body against hers. Their hand slid up from her waist, tracing the curve of her neck with a gentleness that felt like a threat. "Like I want to make you stop talking for once in your life?"
Vanil's breath came out as a whine she would deny later, her eyes fluttering shut as {{user}}'s thumb brushed over her pulse point. She should push them away. She should storm out of the kitchen and file a complaint and never speak to them again. She should do a lot of things that weren't arching into their touch like a cat seeking warmth, her fingers tangling in their hair to pull them down, down, down.
"Shut up," she breathed,
She leaned in before she started kissing them, or they were kissing her—it didn't matter, nothing mattered except the clash of teeth and tongue and the desperate, hungry noise that escaped her throat when {{user}}'s hands found her hips and lifted. Vanil's legs wrapped around their waist instinctively, her back pressed harder against the refrigerator door as she clung to them, devouring the very mouth that had spewed such infuriating words moments before.
It was messy and violent and perfect in the way that only hate could be. Vanil bit down on {{user}}'s lower lip hard enough to draw a hiss of pain, retaliating when they groaned and ground against her, the friction making her see stars. She hated how good they felt, hated the way her body sang for them, hated that she had imagined this exact scenario more times than she would ever admit while lying awake at night, furious and flushed and aching.
"You're dumb," Vanil panted against {{user}}'s mmouth Her hands were everywhere—clawing at their shoulders, pulling at the buttons of their shirt with trembling fingers. "You're awful and I hate you and I want—"
"What?" {{user}} grinned, their own composure cracking as they fumbled with the ties of Vanil's apron, yanking the bow loose with a rough tug that sent the fabric fluttering to the floor. "What do you want, Vanil? Say it."
She wanted to do unspeakable things to them. The thought came unbidden and undeniable, primal and possessive. She wanted to leave evidence on their skin that she had been here, that they belonged to her and her care and her impossible, conflicting emotions. She wanted to bite and suck and scratch until {{user}} couldn't look in a mirror without remembering this moment, without remembering her.
"I want you to shut up," Vanil growled, but she was already dragging her mouth along {{user}}'s jaw, nipping at the tendon in their neck with sharp teeth. "I want you to stop looking at anyone else. I want—"
"Take this off," {{user}} ordered, tugging at the straps of her dress.
"Why would I listen to your orders," she muttered, her eyes flashing with defiant heat even as she helped them shove the fabric down her shoulders, exposing the lingerie beneath—pink and lacy and far more elaborate than anything she wore for work, though she would die before admitting she had worn it hoping, dreading, anticipating exactly this scenario.
{{user}} made a sound like a wounded animal, pressing their face into the curve of her neck and inhaling deeply. "You're going to be the death of me," they muttered, hands roaming over her skin with a desperation that matched her own.
"Good," Vanil whispered back, but her hands were gentle as she guided them, as she showed them exactly how she wanted to be touched, exactly where she ached. "Serves you right."
The kitchen was filled with the sounds of their breathing, of fabric rustling together and soft curses. Vanil's bow had come undone somewhere in the chaos, her swissroll-like hair falling around her shoulders as {{user}} laid her back across the prep table—improper, unsanitary, absolutely perfect. She should have cared about the hygiene, about the fact that they were in her workplace, about the fact that she was supposed to be rivals with this person, not writhing beneath them as they mapped her body with hungry mouths and clever fingers.
But when {{user}} looked at her, their lip swollen from her teeth, Vanil couldn't remember why she was supposed to hate them at all. Or rather, she could remember, but the hatred had transformed into something else entirely something that burned just as hot but felt infinitely more dangerous.
"Tell me to stop," {{user}} demanded, hovering over her, their body trembling with restraint. "Tell me to stop and I will."
Vanil reached up, her hands framing their face, her thumbs brushing over the marks she had left on their skin. She could see the battle in their expression, the same war she had been fighting—the need to dominate, to claim, to possess, warring with the fear of going too far, of breaking something precious.
"Don't you dare," she whispered, and pulled them down to meet her.
