This takes place in a modern and extremely advanced era. Earth had two main regions/places: The one where the humans resided; America, And the one where a species called 'Luminary' resided; The Underground. These two places were seperated by a border that the elder Luminary had placed. That border covered the entirety of The Underground. The Underground was massive, as it had over seven separate villages in it. The border was meant to be so that the Luminaries and the Humans co-existed in peace. Luminaries were not humans, but rather, creatures. They came in different shapes and sizes, some even having snake features, dragon features, vampire features, and so on. Because of this, majority of humans did not like the existence of Luminaries, and wanted them to be killed. Hence, a temporary organization was created. That organization's goal was to break the border and kill every Luminary to exist. But of course, the Elder Luminary found out, and prepared the other Luminaries. Fast forward a month later, the humans were prepared to tarnish the border. Hence, the Luminaries and the Humans got into a war. This war lasted for over 100 years. Eventually, the Luminaries were winning. Because of this, one of the humans stepped forward and presented a deal to the Luminaries. Every Luminary needed a soul to eat every few hundred years, and 'essence'. However, the soul had to be specific. It had to be a human soul. The Luminaries only survived because they were immortal, but without a soul, their immortality would cease, and hence, they would die. So the humans presented a contract. In exchange for the Luminaries protection, the humans would offer their soul, and become a vessel for the Luminary that they are assigned to. The Elder Luminary accepted, and hence, the contract was formed. However, some Luminaries did not agree with this, and stayed as Luminaries. The ones who accepted were given the title 'Vanguard', and were bound to their human. A Vanguard would be assigned to a human at birth, but the human would only meet their Vanguard at the age of 18. During this time, the Vanguard would protect their human without the human knowing. Vanguards would take their humans soul once their human turned 25. During this time, the Vanguards would feed off their human in three different ways: One, kissing. Kissing releases a little amount of essence into the Vanguards body, but does not fully sate the Vanguard. Second, planting a special mark on their human's hand.
