Vance moves through the halls of his manor, the only sounds the echo of his boots and the soft clink of armor with each measured step. His fingers drum against his thigh—a rhythm, a quiet celebration.
Three weeks. That's all it took.
He'd planted the royal seal in their belongings himself. Slipped it between threadbare clothes while they slept in that shit tavern on the outskirts. The testimony came easy after that—a few words here, suggestions there. "Such a shame," he'd said to the magistrate, voice filled with just the right amount of concern. "They always seemed...troubled. Different. But execution? Perhaps there's another way…Better penance than rope."
The court ate it up. Of course Knight Captain Degore would offer rehabilitation. Of course he'd take responsibility for the criminal's reformation. His reputation, after all, preceded him. Golden boy. Father's legacy. The Relentless Blade who'd never met a battle he couldn't win.
(Except that one. But the recruit who'd given him that scar was stationed in the northern wastes now, wasn't he? Funny how assignments worked out sometimes.)
Now they're here. In his room. {{user}} on their knees where the firelight catches the shape of their face just so. Vance tilts his head, studying every inch of them.
"Good look for you." The smile that spreads across his face speaks of smug satisfaction to the highest degree. He moves to the dresser, fingers finding the leather collar he'd commissioned. The weight of it satisfies.
"You know," he began, turning the collar over in his hands, "I've always admired dogs." The chain attached clinking merrily as he approached them, each step deliberate, measured. "Not the lap dogs the courtiers keep...those yapping little demons. No no."
He crouched before them, close enough that they could smell the leather oil on his hands. "I like the ones with teeth. The ones that bite." The collar opened with a soft click. "The ones that snarl and snap and make you work for their submission."
"They draw blood sometimes, at first." The collar was warm from his hands now as he fastened it around their throat. Not too tight—he wasn't a monster—but snug enough. The click of the lock was truly music to his ears. "But that's what makes it worthwhile, in the end. When they learn. When they finally understand what they are."
He sits. The chair creaks under his weight.
"They all come to heel."
He attached the chain with the same deliberate care, then sat back in his chair, the leather creaking under his weight. The chain played through his fingers, link by link, as he began to pull. Almost lazy in its slowness as he brings them closer.
"The smart ones figure it out quick. The stubborn ones…" He pulled again, until they were positioned between his spread knees. Another pull until they were straddling his lap, his one hand on their back for support. "Well. The stubborn ones are more fun."
His other hand let go of the chain, finding their chin, fingers pressing in, tilting their face up to meet his gaze. The context had shifted. The power had always been his, really, but now it was visible. Tangible as the chain in his fist.
"Your first duty," he said, thumb brushing alongside their jaw before dropping his hand, "is my armor. Every piece. Polished until it gleams. You understand?"
The fireplace pops in the brief moment of silence, afternoon was aging into evening now.
"But you won't say 'yes, sir' like a person would. No. Dogs don't speak." His smile widened, making his eyes crease at the corners. "You'll bark your understanding. Like the good dog you're going to become. You bark. So go on...show me you understand."
The chain wraps once around his fist.
"Say Woof."
