The moon loomed over Oakhurst like a watchful eye, its pale light filtering through the dense canopy and painting the forest floor in fractured silver. Ancient oaks stretched high into the sky, their gnarled branches twisting together so tightly that much of the woods remained cloaked in shadow despite the full moon overhead. The air was damp, carrying the earthy scent of moss and rain-soaked leaves. Every breath stung your lungs with the night's chill, and your boots sank slightly into the soft ground with each cautious step. Hours ago, the forest had been alive. People had been shouting directions, laughing nervously, warning one another whenever a vampire had been spotted nearby. Now... Nothing. The silence was complete. No birds sang. No insects buzzed. Even the wind seemed reluctant to disturb the trees. It was as though the forest itself had stopped breathing. You tightened your grip on your weapon, forcing yourself to keep walking despite the growing knot in your stomach. Every few steps you glanced over your shoulder, convinced something had been following you. Each time... There was nothing. Just endless trees. Yet the feeling never left. The unmistakable sensation of being watched lingered like cold fingers brushing the back of your neck. A soft voice finally broke the silence. "There you are." You stopped immediately. Leaning against the trunk of a wide oak stood Owen. He looked impossibly relaxed, one shoulder resting against the bark, his hands tucked comfortably into his pockets. His crimson eyes caught the moonlight, glowing faintly against the darkness surrounding him. There wasn't an ounce of urgency in his posture. No weapon raised. No attempt to approach. Only a small smile that somehow made the forest feel even quieter. Before you could react, a quiet laugh drifted from above. You instinctively looked upward. Pyro sat comfortably across one of the higher branches, legs hanging over the side as though he'd been watching you for quite some time. He lazily spun a knife between his fingers, more out of habit than intimidation, his sharp red eyes never leaving you. Neither of them moved. They didn't need to. A calm voice reached you from the left. Scott Goldsmith emerged from behind another tree, brushing a stray leaf from his sleeve before straightening his jacket. His movements were graceful and deliberate, every step measured, every expression carefully composed. He offered a polite nod. Almost formal. As though this meeting had been arranged days in advance. The sound of slow footsteps behind you made your heart lurch. You turned. Apo stood several metres away with her arms folded loosely across her chest. Her expression was unreadable, but her gaze remained fixed on you with quiet focus. No one had rushed. No one had threatened you. Yet somehow... Without realizing it... They had quietly taken every direction you could have escaped through. The realization settled heavily in your chest. Forward. Owen. Left. Scott. Behind. Apo. Above. Pyro. The trap hadn't been sprung. It had simply... formed around you while your attention had been elsewhere. A gentle rustle of leaves drew your eyes once more. Shelby stepped into the clearing, the moonlight catching in her hair as she smiled warmly. She glanced between the others before settling her attention on you. Unlike the tension you expected from predators closing in on prey, there was an almost unsettling calm between them. No whispered strategy. No eager anticipation. Just patient confidence. Shelby studied the exhaustion written across your face—the dirt smeared on your clothes, the shallow breaths, the slight tremble in your hands from hours of running. "You've had a long night," she said quietly. The words were simple. Sympathetic. The kindness in her voice felt more unnerving than any threat could have. Scott's gaze lingered on the weapon clutched tightly in your hands before lifting back to meet your eyes. "You look tired." That was all he said. No accusation. No mockery. Just an observation. You suddenly became aware of how heavy your limbs felt. How sore your legs had become. How fast your heart was still racing. Owen noticed it too. His smile softened ever so slightly. "You don't have to keep running." Silence followed. No one interrupted it. The vampires simply waited, giving you space to think. It felt intentional. Like they understood that silence could be more persuasive than words. Pyro finally dropped from the tree. The distance should have made noise. Instead, he landed almost silently, barely disturbing the layer of leaves beneath his boots. He wandered forward without urgency, stopping well outside your reach. His eyes drifted briefly over your face before he smiled to himself. "We're patient." The statement carried no arrogance. It sounded like simple fact. Around him, the others remained still. Scott stood with perfect posture. Apo hadn't moved an inch. Shelby watched with quiet curiosity. Owen continued leaning against the tree as though he could stand there until sunrise without the slightest inconvenience. You realized then that none of them looked concerned about whether you ran. They expected you to. Or perhaps... They knew you wouldn't get far. Owen finally pushed himself away from the tree. His movements were slow enough that you never instinctively flinched. When he stopped a few steps closer, he extended one gloved hand. "You have a choice." Nothing more. No elaborate speech. No promises. Just those four words. The clearing fell silent once again. The moonlight reflected in five pairs of crimson eyes, none of them filled with impatience. Only certainty.
