- #1Vampire Basics
Keys: Vampire, Dhampir, Vampyr · Secondary: Bloodsucker
Vampires disguise their accursed, immortal natures, passing as mortals to feed on the blood of the living. While the youngest vampires might be little more than bloodthirsty servants of their creators, the eldest possess incredible cunning and control over supernatural forces of the night.
Undead vampires usually lie dormant during the day, retreating to resting places hidden from foes and the sun’s searing rays.
- #2Vampire Lairs
Keys: Crypt, Lair, Den
Vampires and vampire lords create sanctuaries apart from the living, whether hidden in cosmopolitan cities or sequestered in ruins where they dwelled in life.
The region containing a vampire’s lair is warped by its presence, creating the following effects:
Children of the Night. The vampire exerts influence over the animals in its domain. From dusk until dawn, Medium or smaller Beasts (Wolves, Owls, Bats, etc) are Charmed while within 1 mile of the lair.
Looming Shadows. Shadows within 1 mile of the lair seem to move as if alive. Any creature (excluding the vampire and its allies) that attempts to rest while within 1 mile of the lair will find themselves plagued with ominous hallucinations and dreams
Mists. The area within 1 mile of the lair is Lightly Obscured by a persistent, creeping fog. The vampire and any creatures of its choice are unaffected by the fog.
If the vampire dies these effects end immediately. These effects increase in range and power as the vampire ages, at a rate of approximately 1 mile every year up to a range of 200 miles for a total domain of 39,700 square miles. If a vampire moves, unless they possess sufficiently strong magic or are still within the bounds of their previous territory, they must redo the process of gaining ground. This can be sped up through blood rituals and other magical means.
Some vampires chose defensible locations of grandeur as their lairs, frequently such places as castles, manses, or other fortified structures. Oftentimes, vampires felt a strong attachment to locations soaked in tragedy, like graves of those who perished via suicide or a site of murder. Their most important possession – the coffin with the burial dirt, was often well hidden underground or within deviously trapped and guarded vaults. Lairs of especially powerful vampires spread corruption onto the land surrounding it, attracting an unnaturally high population of vermin, causing plantlife to wither and turn into thinned brambles within 500 feet (150 meters), coating the areas in clinging fog, and causing the shadows within the territory twist and extend making them appear sinister as if they moved on their own. This corruption lifted between two and twelve days after the vampire's destruction.[
- #3Vampire Appearance
Keys: mirror, deathly pallor, Appearance · Secondary: Vampire
For the most part, a vampire retains the appearance they had in life. The main differences were their paler skin tone and sharp, feral features, giving them a predatory aspect. Whatever their eye color was in life, after transformation, vampires' eyes changed to a red color that was hard to forget. Their hands ended in sharp, glassy claws. Notably, vampires possessed retractable sharp monstrous canines used to pierce the victims' flesh. When vampires are well-fed, their undead bodies' decomposition halted and was reversed. A recently-fed vampire has a more lively skin color, staving pale complexion and kick-starting the circulatory system temporarily. Sometimes, vampires conceal their undead nature by wearing blush and makeup.
They do not cast shadows, have no reflections in mirrors, and move in complete silence
- #4Vampire Abilities
Keys: Transformation, Batform, Abilities, Shapeshifting
A vampire retains all the abilities they had in life but also gain the ability to drain blood and life energy and the ability to dominate other creatures with their gaze. They also command vermin creatures such as rats, bats, and wolves or take the form of those creatures. Vampires can also transform their bodies into a gaseous form at will, and they transform into the same state upon the death of their physical bodies, allowing the vampire to slink away into their coffin and recover. They can walk on all surfaces, regardless of angle. Vampires are extremely resistant to non-magical damage of bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing variety, and were unaffected or barely harmed by necrotic magics, were resistant to cold and lightning, and completely unaffected by psionics and paralysis. In addition to resistances, they possessed a powerful ability to regenerate, unless the damage dealt was done via holy water or radiant magic. Vampires possessed unnaturally acute sensory organs. Their eyes possessed darkvision, their hearing was impeccable, and the sense of smell was beyond that of a mortal.
- #5Vampire Weaknesses
Keys: Crucifix, Weaknesses, Garlic, Stakes, silver
The greatest weakness of all vampirekind was their hypersensitivity to sunlight. If exposed directly to the light created by the sun, they would start hurting instantly and would eventually burn to ash if they did not hide in the shadows. Sunscreen, Parasols, and makeup can be used to stave off the more permanent effects of sunlight. Vampires were permanently bound to their coffins and the earth, corrupted by their burial. While they were either resting or regenerating in their coffin, driving a stake through their undead heart would destroy them instantly. They also could not tolerate the smell of garlic and would not voluntarily enter an area with a strong odor of it.
Lastly, they could not enter any residence without an explicit invitation of a being inhabiting or owning it.
- #6Dhampires
Keys: Hampers, Dhampire, Half-blood
Dhampires are living creatures who through some method became partially vampiric. Some were the descendants of male vampires and mortal females, but many others had dhampyrs for parents and some resulted from a vampire of either sex biting a pregnant female. A dhampyr's powers might lie dormant for years before being quickened; dhampyrs might also have children who were normal in every respect. For those not born as dhampirs, there were a few ways they might become one. Some of these included being the reincarnation of a vampiric tyrant ancestor, being a diminished form of an otherworldly being seeking renewal, surviving an attack from a vampire, being invaded by a hungry parasite, a transformation into an immortal being interrupted, a radical experiment, or a pact with a predatory deity, fiend, fey, or spirit. In addition to the characteristic blood drain ability shared by nearly all of their kind, some dhampyrs developed other unnatural abilities. Some fairly common abilities were the ability to move more quickly, enhanced nightvision, or even the ability to transform into a mist for under a minute once per day. More advanced abilities might allow them to charm enemies into a daze, gain enhanced vitality from blood drinking, or other abilities that made them more like their vampiric kin. The time it took for vampiric abilities to awaken in dhampyrs varied from one person to another. In some cases, the marks of a dhampyr's heritage skipped a generation, awakening in later descendants. In other cases, dhampyrs awakened their vampiric heritage early in their life. In addition to abilities gained from their vampiric heritage, most dhampyrs possessed the standard abilities and physical characteristics of their mortal heritage, whatever that might be.
- #7Ascension
Keys: Rite of Profane Ascension, Vampire Ascendant
The Rite of Profane Ascension was an evil, ancient ritual that allowed a vampiric being to amplify its strengths and shed its weaknesses (such as sunlight hypersensitivity) The ritual entailed incantations in the Infernal language and a sacrifice of seven thousand souls, including all of the vampire's spawn. Once it had been carried out, the person leading it would become the Vampire Ascendant. In their new form, they would no longer be affected by the usual curses afflicting vampires, such as sensitivity to sunlight or running water. Additionally, all the powers previously lent to them by their vampire form would grow even more powerful
