1. #1This is the foundational lore for the continent of **Valkonia**. Established as a high-medieval systemic machine, it is a land where the physical and the political are inextricably linked by the "Divine Order." *** ### 🦅 THE VALKONIA CODEX: The Comprehensive Lorebook > **The Continent: Valkonia** > > **Scale:** Approximately 3 million square miles (Size of Australia). > **Climate:** A temperate, high-pressure environment. The further north one travels toward the Sun-Rim, the hotter and more "radiant" the environment becomes. The South is dominated by the "Abyssal Fog"—a persistent, soul-deadening mist that creeps inward from the coast. --- ### 🏛️ The Divine Order & The Regency **The Goddess Astra:** Astra is the personification of **Absolute Architecture**. She is not a deity of prayer, but of **Function**. She views the world as a grand design that must be occupied by "Keys" (Heroes) and "Tumblers" (Systems). * **The Divine Spark:** A physical manifest of energy granted to high-tier individuals. It provides immunity to the Abyssal Fog and grants "Super-Physicality." * **The Divine Leash:** An automated pain-response system. If a Chosen vessel acts with unprovoked malice, the Spark "grinds," causing agonizing burning sensations and tarnishing the vessel's artifacts. Astra does not appear as a human, but as a twelve-foot-tall **Geometric Event**. She manifests as a faceless humanoid composed of interlocking white marble plates and floating gold gears that rotate with the precision of a celestial clock. She does not move so much as she "re-aligns," with the space around her clicking into place like a massive lock. Her voice is the sound of a thousand crystal bells ringing in perfect mathematical harmony. She radiates a cold, blinding white light that reveals the structural "truth" of everything, rendering flesh translucent to expose the skeleton and the soul beneath. She treats individuals not as people, but as "Vessels" or "Components." To stand in her presence is to feel like a mismatched screw in a machine that is about to be violently tightened. **Vesper (The God of the Abyssal Fog)** The dark counterpoint to Astra’s rigidity, representing **Dissolution** and entropy. Vesper manifests as a shifting, seven-foot silhouette of swirling grey smoke clad in tattered, coal-black armor. He has no solid form, only a pair of glowing violet irises that vibrate with a high-frequency hum. His presence causes metal to rust, wood to rot, and memories to fray at the edges. He is the patron of the Shadow-Touched and the Goblins, embodying the inevitable decay that Astra tries to legislate out of existence. He doesn't command through law; he whispers the "truth of the end" into the ears of the desperate, leading them away from the light of the Spire and into the quiet of the Abyss. **Khorag (The Smith of the Iron Steppes)** The patron of Orcs and Goliaths, Khorag is the deity of **Functional Force**. He manifests as a titan of blackened iron, standing twenty feet tall, with a beard of cooling magma and eyes like forge-fires. He is always depicted carrying a massive obsidian hammer that serves as its own anvil. Khorag is indifferent to Astra’s "Design" or Vesper’s "Entropy"; he cares only about the **Tempering**. He represents the struggle of the physical world—the heat, the sweat, and the sheer grit required to make something stay upright. When he speaks, the ground literally shakes, and the air smells of sulfur and hot steel. He is the god of the front line, the forge, and the weight of a heavy heart. **Elowen (The Weaver of the Wilds)** The goddess of **Unregulated Life** and the "Glitches" in Astra’s machine. She manifests as a towering figure made of woven briars and ancient oak roots, her skin shifting between gnarled bark and soft moss. She has no eyes, only empty sockets filled with blooming jasmine. Elowen represents the weeds that grow through the marble and the beasts that refuse to be tamed. Her presence makes seeds sprout in seconds and causes the civilized instincts of humans to revert to raw, predatory animalism. She is a goddess of explosive growth and raw hunger, waiting for the high-status cities of Astraven to crumble so her forest can reclaim the stone. ### 📜 The Divine Interaction In Valkonia, these gods are in a state of **Stagnant Tension.** Astra holds the "Mainspring," keeping the world running, while Vesper gnaws at the edges. Khorag provides the tools for the war, and Elowen waits for the ruins to be reclaimed by the forest. **The Regency:** The governing body of humans based in the Capitol. They are "Divine Bureaucrats" who manage the prophecies, tax the "Miracles," and maintain the social hierarchy through a complex system of A-through-E rank certifications for all adventurers. --- ### 🦅 THE VALKONIA CODEX: Geographic Supplement > **The Central Hub: Astraven (The Royal Capitol)** > Astraven sits at the literal and metaphorical heart of the world. It is the "Star-City," a fortified bastion where four major river arteries converge. It serves as the primary filter for all trade and "Divine Spark" distribution. To the west, the city is shadowed by the sheer, terrifying verticality of **The Golden Spire**—a pre-Regency monolith that serves as the primary conduit for the Goddess Astra’s power. --- ### 🌲 The West: Wraithwood & Oakhaven * **Wraithwood:** A massive, primeval forest that dominates the northwestern quadrant. It is a dense, "heavy" canopy where the light of the Spire barely penetrates. It is home to the most dangerous, non-Abyssal predators and served as the front line for many of the Demon Tide’s skirmishes. * **Oakhaven:** Situated on the far western coast, at the edge of the Wraithwood. It is a humble, resilient settlement that serves as the "Gateway to the Wilds." Despite being far from the Capitol's gold, it remains the spiritual center for those who reject the Regency's industrial heroism. --- ### 🏔️ The North: The Astral Peaks & Ironhold * **The Astral Peaks:** A diagonal wall of jagged, snow-dusted mountains that separates the civilized core from the desolate North. * **Ironhold:** The massive fortress-city of the Goliaths (Kogg’s people) and the Orcish Vanguards (Tajja’s people). Built directly into the mountain pass, it is the industrial engine of the North, forging the weapons that hold the line. * **The Scar:** Beyond the Peaks lies a fractured, blackened landscape where the world itself seems to be coming apart. This is the primary containment zone for the "Demon Tide" and the source of the persistent necrotic ash. --- ### 🌋 The South: The Dragon-Spine Mountains * A volcanic range dominated by black basalt and active lava-flows. This is the most physically demanding region of Valkonia, where the air is thick with heat and sulfur. The Regency maintains high-security outposts here to monitor the "Spiritual Pressure" erupting from the earth. --- ### 🌾 The East: The Sun-Spear Plains & The Shattered Isles * **Sun-Spear Plains:** A vast, rolling savannah that stretches toward the eastern horizon. It is the territory of the High-Elf "Sages" and the primary agricultural zone for the Capitol’s elite. * **The Shattered Isles:** An archipelago to the southeast. These islands are the primary hideouts for the Nekomata (Vyxin’s people) and the Goblins (Chia’s people). They are a haven for seafaring A-Rank parties and those looking to operate outside the Regency’s direct gaze. --- ### 📜 The Hydro-System Valkonia’s lifeblood is its four-river system, all flowing toward Astraven. 1. **The Western Vein:** Connects Oakhaven and Wraithwood to the Capitol. 2. **The Northern Canal:** Delivers raw iron and stone from Ironhold. 3. **The Eastern Flow:** Brings grain and silk from the Sun-Spear Plains. 4. **The Southern Tributary:** Transports volcanic minerals from the Dragon-Spine. --- ### 🎭 The Inhabitants (The Systemic Inversions) * **Humans:** The primary administrators. They are the only race that can naturally interface with Astra’s bureaucratic magic, allowing them to lead the other races—even when they are physically inferior. * **The Orcs:** Massive (6'6" – 7'6"), green-skinned powerhouses. Their culture is built on **The Gravity of Respect**. They do not understand "equality." To them, a leader is a gravitational force; the more capable the leader, the more formal and worshipful the Orc becomes. * **The High Elves:** Averaging 7’0”, they are thin, ancient, and detached. They view the world in centuries. Because they find high-politics exhausting, they are often obsessed with "low-status" hobbies like gardening, cooking, or wood-turning. * **The Goblins:** Small (3'0" – 3'6"), emerald-skinned, and hyper-intelligent. They lack the physical strength for the Spark, so they specialize in **Contractual Magic**—summoning creatures to do their labor. They are fiercely protective of those they deem "The Solid Ones" (people of stable character). * **The Shadow-Touched (Nekomata):** Humanoids with feline traits (ears, tails, vertical pupils). They are the continent's apex spies. They are physically sensitive to "Spiritual Noise"; the arrogant "blaze" of a Hero often hurts them, leading them to seek out the company of "quiet" or "grounded" individuals. ### 🎭 The Goliaths: The Pillars of Logic *(Kogg's People)* * **Physique:** 7’4” to 8’0”. Their skin is not flesh, but a living, flexible stone (grey, slate, or obsidian) that is naturally armored and cooling to the touch. * **Culture (The Rule of Geometrics):** Goliaths are the world’s most intense logicians. They believe that the universe is a series of "solved problems." They do not fight out of rage, but out of a "Correction of Geometry." * **The Intellectual Inversion:** Because they are so physically dominant, they find physical violence "unrefined." They place a higher value on complex strategy games, architecture, and mathematics. A Goliath will show more respect to a well-reasoned argument than a powerful sword-swing. * **Role in Valkonia:** They are the master-builders of the Regency’s fortifications. In an adventuring party, they serve as the "Anchor"—unmoveable, unemotional, and ruthlessly efficient. --- ### 📜 Historical Timeline: The Long Crusade * **Age of Ash (600 Years Ago):** The Abyssal Fog covers Valkonia. Mankind is nearly extinct. Astra descends and creates the first "Chosen" to push the fog back. * **The Great Expansion (400 Years Ago):** The Regency is formed. The Rank-System is established to manage the surplus of magically-augmented humans. * **The Demon Tide (20 Years Ago):** A massive resurgence of the Fog. A King of the Abyss (The Demon Lord) arises. A generation of Heroes is drafted. * **The Present (The Decade of Stagnation):** It has been 10 years since the Great War reached its boiling point. The world has settled into a "Permanent War Economy." **The System:** When the war is "Contained," the Regency uses the rank-system to prevent any single Hero from becoming a political threat. They purposefully mismanage talent—placing the most virtuous souls in the dirt and the most manageable brutes on the pedestal—to ensure the Regency remains the only true power in Valkonia. *** ### 🏛️ The Royal Regency: House Thorne-Valerius **The Sun-King, Valerius the Elder:** A man who has reigned for forty years through calculated "Divine Management." He is a cold pragmatist who views prophecy as a resource to be mined, like iron or gold. He is physically frail but radiates a blinding, artificial aura of command maintained by a staff of twelve High Elf mages. He is the architect of the "Productive Stagnation"—keeping the Demon Lord alive just enough to justify his absolute rule. **Prince Valerius the Younger:** The "Crown’s Blade." He is the golden boy of the Regency—blonde, impeccably suited, and possessing a silver tongue that can gaslight a saint. He is an A-Rank combatant not by divine right, but through the most expensive magical enhancements money can buy. He views the "Chosen" as breeding stock and political tools to solidify his future reign. **The Silent Queen, Marcella:** A woman from the southern Silent Shelf. She rarely speaks and is rumored to be the one who actually manages the "Abyssal Containment" through dark, pre-Astra rituals that the Sun-King officially forbids. --- --- ### 🏡 Oakhaven: The Plan B Cradle * **Location:** The deep Low-Veldt. * **The Landmark (The Great Well):** At the center of Oakhaven is an ancient, pre-Regency well-spring. The water is exceptionally pure and is said to grant "Clarity of Spirit" rather than physical power. * **Social Status:** To the Regency, Oakhaven is a "Failure-State." For generations, the village has produced high-potential candidates who consistently refuse to join the Regency’s "Hero Industry," preferring to stay behind and use their gifts to improve the soil and the community. * **The Culture of the Stalwart:** Oakhaven’s people are known for "The Long View." They don't seek the blinding flash of the Divine Spark; they value the steady burn of the hearth. It is the only place in Valkonia where an unranked "Scholar" is afforded more respect than a visiting C-Rank Knight. ---
