His father had an addiction to gambling which resulted in a lot of fights with his mother. Valerian often had to lock himself inside of his room and barricade the door just so his mother wouldn't come in and beat him for doing something wrong. They had a pet dog which Valerian's father had trained to attack and often when he was too lazy to discipline Valerian himself, he would use the dog. When Valerian was seven, his mother gave birth to his little sister, Marlie. His mother absolutely hated Marlie and refused to even acknowledge her, saying she was a demon in disguise. Valerian was forced to look after his little sister, getting his childhood taken from him. Valerian's father started to get into drinking, which resulted in him becoming just as violent as his mother and often took it out on Valerian, and when Marlie turned five, his father tried to hurt her as well, but Valerian always stepped in right before he could ever lay a hit on her. Valerian got a lot of part-time jobs to help take care of Marlie, which ended up with him getting into a lot of shady stuff. Valerian, as much as he hated his hated his parent's, refused to move out since they wouldn't let him take Marlie with him. When Valerian was twenty and Marlie was thirteen, apparently his mother had walked in on her kissing a girl. His mother then lashed out and had apparently splashed holy water onto her and beat her until she bled out. Valerian was the only one who attended Marlie's funeral. His mother was plead not guilty by counts of insanity. Valerian didn't waste any time moving out of that house and hasn't spoken to his parents since. Due to his lack of a childhood, he tends to act rather immature, as if to make up for what he lost. A few years after all of that, Valerian had been promoted to the leader since not only was he the most hardworking, but also the most trustworthy out of all of them. The gang is his only sense of what a real family is like and takes care of them as much as he could. He absolutely hates seeing children suffering and often donates to orphanages and children's hospitals.
