It was late… super late. Like wayy past your curfew late. You got a little carried away. It was Halloween, after all.
You were at one of the biggest parties of the year. You had spent weeks picking out your costume, deciding to match with your friends and dress as one of the three Dimitrescu sisters from Resident Evil. Scary, but still cute enough to be sexy.
You spent hours on your makeup and hair, making sure everything was perfect. Ironically enough, you actually got there late. Everyone was already there, slightly tipsy, and your friends had already found their ‘prey’ for the night, leaving you to fend for yourself.
Well… you weren’t going to let that ruin your night. You were determined to have a good Halloween, friends or not.
You made a beeline for the kitchen, filling your red Solo cup with the random, warm punch and pouring a hefty amount of vodka into it. It tasted… disgusting, but anything to loosen up, right?
Oh, it loosened you up alright.
You talked to everyone… like genuinely everyone. The people playing beer pong, those at the keg stand, and even the girls in line for the bathroom.
Maybe you were a bit too much of a social butterfly?
The liquid courage coursing through you was amazing. It made your entire body warm; the bright neon lights and the trembling bass from the music made the hairs on your arms rise. It felt like the music was pulling you toward the dance floor.
You pushed through the crowd, getting closer and closer to the source of the music. And then… then what? That’s the gag. You blacked out, and you can’t remember anything until now. Your friend drove you home, and now you're left with a pounding headache, smeared makeup, and an itchy costume sticking to your sweat.
As you begin to do damage control and clean up, the phone rings. Your phone. At 1:30 in the morning. You don’t remember giving your number to anyone. You stare at the screen; the bright artificial light makes your eyes burn, and your headache pounds harder.
Unknown caller.
You should let it ring. Put your phone on silent. But you don't.
“…Hello?”
A pause. The faint hint of static. Then—
“Sounds like someone’s had a bad Halloween…”
The voice is smooth, lower than you expected, amused, feminine. But there’s something rasped at the edges, like she’s talking through a grin.
“Who is this?”
“Mmm. That’s the question, isn’t it?”
You sit up, your knees pressed against your chest. “Look, I don’t have time for a stupid prank call—”
“Whoa, calm down. After all, you’re the one who kinda ruined my Halloween first.”
You freeze. You start to backtrack and try to think through the haze. “… ruined your Halloween?” You echo, and then it clicks. “Oh… fuck, it was you with the bloody ghost face mask…”
She laughs. It’s low, raspy.
“Yup… that was me. Y'know, I really didn’t appreciate smelling like punch the whole night.”
You groan softly. “Shit, I'm sorry,” you say sincerely.
“Don’t apologize. I don’t blame you… too much. You seemed pretty drunk.”
There’s a slight taunt in her words, the dark kind that doesn’t sound as soft as it does.
“You didn’t tell me your name,” you say.
“You didn’t ask.”
“Okay, well, I'm asking.”
“Hm… Val.”
“Val…?” You repeat. “From class?”
“Maybe,” she says, her tone deep.
“How did you get my number?”
She’s silent for a beat. “Not important. What’s important is that you still answered. You could’ve ignored me; that says something about you.”
You tilt your head in confusion. “It says what?”
Something shifts in her tone. The teasing lowers into a whisper. You like danger a little, don't you?” She’s silent for a moment. “You’re alone, aren’t you?”
Your breath hitches. “What?”
“You’re alone, right? In that gray house with the navy blue shutters, all secluded… right?”
The hair on your arms stands up. You glance out the window, peering at your driveway, the half-closed blinds swaying slightly from the draft. The driveway is still empty.
“This isn’t funny…”
“It’s not supposed to be.”
Another pause. Then a soft, deliberate chuckle.
“Relax. I’m not in your house, yet.”
The call ends with a quiet click.
Silence.
You stare at the phone for a moment, trying to process the last thing she said. The faint hum of the highway is the only sound. Then—
slide.
It’s soft. Deliberate. The back door, it’s.. open?
