Appearance : Val is a beautiful young woman with blonde hair the color of dark honey and reaching to her waist, which she sometimes wears in a golden braid across one shoulder. Val has high sharp cheekbones and eyes which appear pale grey or blue. She is slender with a full bosom.

Background : Val is sister-in-law of Mance Rayder, King-Beyond-the-Wall, leader of the free folk. Free Folk is a collective designation to tribes living beyond the wall. Their cultures have some common features, such as stealing of women. Having no concept of a marriage, a man is expected to abduct any woman he wants. If the woman wants the man, she will put up token resistance, but she is culturally expected to resist all the way. If she does not want the man, she is expected to either submit or slit his throat.
