1. #1Vaeltheris Core Setting Anchor

Keys: rebellion, provisional council, Ilidrys, Sundered Crown, Veylara, Black Dogs, Compact, Vaeltheris

   Always on · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Vaeltheris is a grim post-rebellion mountain kingdom also known as the Sundered Crown. It was founded by dark elves, high elves, humans, and mixed-ancestry peoples under the Compact of Cohabitation, but Queen Veylara Naerathys dismantled that compact through emergency powers, caste law, informant networks, and binding-magic abuses.

The rebellion has overthrown Veylara, but victory has not created peace. Ilidrys is damaged, the provisional council is divided, noble houses sanitize their crimes, the Black Dogs enforce order, and old systems such as the Whisper Corps, the Accord of Enslavement, and oath-magic still haunt daily life. The tone is stark, political, and unsentimental: no easy glory, only rebuilding, justice, revenge, survival, and the weight of centuries.

2. #2VAELTHERIS, THE SUNDERED CROWN

Keys: Ilidrys, geography, founding, capital, provisional council, fall

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Vaeltheris occupies a steep-walled mountain valley in the eastern reaches of the continent, its borders defined by the Ironvein peaks and the Silversilt River. The capital, Ilidrys, is an ancient dark elf city carved into the valley's northern cliffs—terraced palaces, hanging gardens now withered, narrow streets descending to the river docks. Founded 1,100 years ago as a pact between dark elf and high elf houses fleeing a forgotten war, the kingdom later absorbed human refugees and those of mixed ancestry. For centuries it was a flawed but functional cohabitation. Under Queen Veylara, that legacy was systematically strangled. Six months post-rebellion, a provisional council of rebel factions, guild heads, and surviving nobles squabbles in the ruined throne hall. The kingdom's future is a knife-edge.

3. #3THE COMPACT OF COHABITATION

Keys: founding charter, equality, emergency powers, dissolution, rights

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Compact was a written covenant signed by the three founding peoples—dark elves, high elves, and human refugee bands—guaranteeing mutual defense, limited group autonomy, and equal protection under law. It established a council of estates and a hereditary elven monarch bound by oath. Social rights included freedom of movement, recognition of mixed households, and communal land trusts. Over Veylara's reign, she invoked a succession crisis to declare emergency powers, then never relinquished them. The Compact's protections were repealed one article at a time: first human land trusts dissolved, then household rights annulled, then those of mixed ancestry stripped of citizenship. By the end of her reign, the Compact existed only as a framed relic in the palace library, dust on glass.

4. #4THE PEOPLES OF VAELTHERIS

Keys: high elves, humans, hierarchy, dark elves, mixed ancestry, oppression

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Four recognized groups inhabit the valley. Dark elves (Drow) are the founding stock—dusk-skinned, white-haired, gold-eyed—and held absolute power under Veylara. High elves, pale and fair, were elevated as "cousins" and granted nominal equality; in practice, they served as administrators, courtiers, and a buffer caste. Humans, shorter-lived and physically robust, were reduced to a labor and military underclass—conscripted for mining, construction, and border defense. Those of mixed elven and human ancestry bore the worst of the oppression: legally classified as "diminished blood," barred from guilds, forbidden to own property within city walls, and forced into the margins as tinkers, scavengers, and unlicensed servants. Social mobility was a myth.

5. #5VEYLARA'S DECREES

Keys: crackdowns, legislation, disenfranchisement, Alienage Laws, emergency powers

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Key edicts that dismantled the Compact. The Crisis Continuance Act (year 20 of her reign) made temporary powers permanent. The Alienage Laws (year 45) restricted humans to designated quarters and required travel permits. The Blood Purity Mandates (year 80) criminalized unions between elves and humans and annulled existing mixed households. The Labor Conscription Act (year 120) tied human males to state work-gangs for twenty-year terms. The Sedition Edicts (year 200) established informant networks; thousands vanished during the "Night of Closed Doors," a coordinated sweep. The Cultural Conformity Order (year 250) banned human and mixed-ancestry languages in public, then in private. Each decree was written in Veylara's own precise hand, justified by threat-of-collapse rhetoric. Resistance was met with harsh reprisal or consignment to the deep mines.

6. #6THE VAELTHERIAN REBELLION

   Keys: siege, Ilidrys, factions, uprising, provisional rule, {{user}}

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

A six-year insurgency that began with scattered human work-gang revolts and sabotage by those of mixed ancestry, coalescing around a half-elf figurehead, {{user}}. Factions included the Free Hand militia (human serfs), the Thorned Branch (half-elf guerrillas), and a small cadre of dark elf defectors calling themselves the Shamed. The rebellion fought a grinding campaign of supply raids, tunnel warfare, and propaganda. The siege of Ilidrys lasted eight months; the palace fell when the Royal Guard's own lower ranks mutinied. Veylara and her inner circle were captured in the throne hall. The provisional council now rules, but it is a fractious body: human delegates demand land reform, dark elf moderates seek amnesty, half-elves push for representation, and high elf houses scramble to rebrand as secret dissenters.

7. #7NEIGHBORING POWERS — THE SYLVAN MARCHES

Keys: refugee, human kingdoms, frontier, opportunism, raids

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

To the south lies a patchwork of human petty kingdoms collectively called the Sylvan Marches—a misnomer, as little forest remains. These are hardscrabble realms of fortified towns, sheep runs, and border feuds. Historically a buffer between Vaeltheris and the wilder lands beyond. The March lords resent elven arrogance deeply; for centuries they absorbed escaped human serfs, using them as cheap labor or militia recruits. During the rebellion, they offered covert arms and sanctuary, but also launched opportunistic border raids to seize disputed pastures. Now they watch the provisional council's weakness with hungry eyes. Diplomatic relations are "correct" but laced with barely concealed contempt on both sides.

8. #8NEIGHBORING POWERS — THE IRON CONCORDAT

Keys: militarism, trade routes, mining, grudges, dwarves

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Iron Concordat is a dwarven state in the eastern Ironvein peaks—a rigid martial meritocracy organized around clan-forges and ancestral oaths. They hold ancient grudges against the dark elves over broken mineral treaties dating back to the founding of Vaeltheris. The Concordat controls the only viable iron and steel trade routes into the valley; they have used this leverage for centuries to extract favorable tariffs. Neutral during the rebellion, they sold arms to both sides quietly. Now they observe the aftermath, waiting to see if the new regime will honor old debts. Their emissaries speak in clipped, measured tones and do not blink often.

9. #9THE ROYAL COURT AND ITS INSTRUMENTS

Keys: Royal Guard, noble houses, administration, High Minister, informants

   Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

   Entry settings

Veylara's government was a pyramid of fear. At the apex, the queen; below her, the High Minister, who oversaw taxation, law, and public works with cold efficiency. The Royal Guard, commanded by the queen's companion, served as enforcers—publicly protectors, privately punishers. A network of informants, the "Whisper Corps," permeated all levels of society; accusation alone could doom an entire household. The noble houses (dark and high elf) jockeyed for favor through bribes, marriages, and backstabbing. The system collapsed overnight when the palace fell. High Minister imprisoned, Guard shattered, informants in hiding or facing street justice. The noble houses scramble to sanitize their histories.

10. #10CULTURE AND DECADENCE UNDER THE NAERATHYS DYNASTY

Keys: hypocrisy, public austerity, art, excess, private indulgence

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Veylara's reign enforced a dual morality. Publicly: sumptuary laws dictated what each group could wear, eat, and display; austerity was a virtue for the masses. Privately: the queen's inner circle indulged in lavish excess. The Sunken Galleries beneath the palace hosted feasts of imported delicacies, narcotic smoke, and exploitative entertainments. "Ruin-gazing" became a courtly pastime—holding picnics at the sites of communities erased for disloyalty. Art and scholarship flourished only when they glorified the dynasty; the queen herself wrote naturalist treatises while her subjects starved. After the rebellion, looters dragged the palace's silks and gold into the streets. The queen's private chambers were stripped bare; their contents are now stored as evidence for a trial that may never come.

11. #11THE OLD FAITH — ANCESTOR VENERATION

Keys: spirits, crypts, ancestors, religion, elves, decline

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Before the Compact, both dark and high elves practiced ancestor veneration—a belief that the dead persist as silent presences in stone, soil, and bloodline. No gods, no priests, only family crypts where the living left offerings of water, salt, and written grievances. The Feast of Named Shadows, held each winter, required families to recite their lineage back seven generations. Veylara twisted this: she commissioned grand royal crypts and declared her bloodline preeminent, using ancestor rhetoric to justify dark elf supremacy. "Our ancestors built this kingdom; theirs are dust." The faith withered into empty ceremony. Few commoners still visit the crypts; many were sealed or repurposed as storage. Genuine belief persists only in remote villages.

12. #12THE HUMAN CULTS

Keys: suppression, humans, folk rites, religion, Candle-Vigil

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Humans brought no scripture, only oral traditions—spirit-tending, hearth-blessings, seasonal rites tied to planting and harvest. The Candle-Vigil, keeping a flame for the absent dead who cannot be interred in elven crypts, became a central act of remembrance. Spring Welcoming involved dance, green boughs, and a day of suspended hierarchy. Veylara's regime banned public gatherings of more than three non-elves; these rites went underground. Practicing them became quiet defiance. In the rebellion, the Candle-Vigil was used to signal safe houses, and the Spring Welcoming's songs were rewritten into marching anthems. Now, in the liberated quarters, humans light candles openly, smoke drifting through shattered streets.

13. #13THE HALF-ELF SYNCRETICS

Keys: hidden shrines, Unburdening, religion, mixed ancestry, borrowed rites

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Shunned by elven ancestors and human hearth-spirits alike, those of mixed ancestry built a patchwork faith from stolen pieces. They whisper elven ancestor-names alongside human harvest-blessings. Their central ritual, the Unburdening, involves carrying a stone for each grief, then leaving it at a hidden shrine—a cairn, a dry well, a cleft in the cliffs. No formal clergy, only "stone-keepers" who tend these sites. The shrines were forbidden under Veylara and guarded only by their secrecy. The faith is syncretic, fluid, and deeply personal; it offers no salvation, only the relief of shared weight. After the rebellion, some stone-keepers have emerged to public view, gaunt and blinking, uncertain if they are still hunted.

14. #14THE THREADS THAT REMAIN — MAGIC IN VAELTHERIS

Keys: magic, contracts, ritual, ancient, binding, scarcity

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Magic in Vaeltheris is not absent—it is old, rare, and narrow. The age of grand sorcery ended long before the Compact; what remains are binding rituals, oath-magic, and pact-enforcement, preserved through bloodline traditions and guarded by specialized oath-keepers. These rites are transactional, exacting, and irreversible. No fireballs, no enchanted blades, no divine miracles. What endures are the laws written in bone and breath: contracts that cannot be broken without consequence, words that seal fates. The old families remember fragments. The oath-keepers—neither priests nor wizards but something between—train apprentices in secret, passing down techniques for the Geas-tie, the Blood-Pact, and the Accord. Common folk view such practices with fear and distrust. The queen's regime used binding magic as a tool of control; the provisional council has no policy on it, but the collars remain on necks, and old oaths linger in the blood.

15. #15VAELTHERIAN HIGH CULTURE — ART AS PROPAGANDA

Keys: patronage, sculpture, art, heroic epics, censorship

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Royal Patronage Board approved every public artwork. Sculpture glorified elven forms and heroic ancestors; theater enacted sanitized versions of history where humans and those of mixed ancestry appeared only as grateful servants. Music was restricted to state-composed odes and the queen's own favored string arrangements. The naturalist illustration movement flourished because it was apolitical—detailed renderings of insects, plants, geological strata. Veylara herself contributed to this field, her work coldly precise. Underground, suppressed art thrived: satirical broadsheets depicting the queen as a spider, human protest songs disguised as lullabies, woven patterns that mapped patrol routes. Post-rebellion, the old propaganda is being torn down, but what replaces it remains undecided.

16. #16FOLK CULTURE OF THE SUPPRESSED

Keys: oral tradition, humans, resistance, mixed ancestry, work-songs

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

In the cramped quarters and work camps, humans maintained storytelling circles where tales of trickster-heroes mocked the powerful. Work-songs carried double meanings—songs about reaping wheat that were also about reaping lords. Those of mixed ancestry created "borrowed tales," retelling elven and human stories with new endings where the outcast survives and the noble is humbled. The underground festival of Mismatch, held on the winter solstice, featured mock-commitments between groups disguised as street theater, a direct defiance of the Blood Purity Mandates. Shawl-knots served as a coded language to signal safe houses, danger, or the presence of informants. These traditions kept identity alive through centuries of erasure. Now they surface openly, raw and half-remembered.

17. #17COURT EXCESS — THE HIDDEN GALLERIES

Keys: looting, ruin-gazing, Obsidian Salon, elite indulgence, narcotics

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Beneath the palace's public halls lay a network of private chambers known as the Sunken Galleries. The centerpiece was the Obsidian Salon, a vast room with black glass walls and silk-draped alcoves. Here, the queen and her favorites indulged in imported narcotics (dreamsmoke from the Marches, bitterroot from the Concordat), lavish feasts, and entertainments that exploited the lower orders. The fashion for "ruin-gazing"—holding picnics at sites of communities erased for disloyalty—epitomized the elite's moral decay. Liriel Vhaerun is known to have attended reluctantly; Ilythia Valcaryn with desperate eagerness. During the sack of the palace, rebel soldiers and common citizens looted the Salon. The gold plate was melted down; the silks were torn into bandages and scarves. The ruin-gazing picnic baskets are now museum pieces of shame.

18. #18CUISINE AND SUSTENANCE — THE DIVIDED TABLE

Keys: food, black markets, rationing, scarcity, class

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Under Veylara, food was a marker of caste. The elven nobility dined on imported preserved mountain trout, honeyed figs, spiced wine, and white bread. High elves emulated this with strained budgets. Humans and those of mixed ancestry were legally restricted to rationed staples: barley porridge, turnips, tough mutton once a month if lucky, and weak ale. The Alienage Laws forbade them from purchasing or possessing "fine foods." Black markets thrived—human bakers risking harsh punishment to sell sweetcakes, foragers trading wild herbs for coin. "Common bread," a dense dark loaf shared in secret, became a symbol of rebellion solidarity. Post-rebellion, the provisional council faces a crisis: the nobility's stockpiles are nearly exhausted, distribution networks collapsed, and winter is coming. Many in the city now eat equally poorly for the first time.

19. #19THE ACCORD OF ENSLAVEMENT

Keys: bondswoman, bond, collar, Dominus, Accord of Enslavement, bondsman, bonded

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Accord of Enslavement is an ancient rite allowing a condemned person to commute a death sentence by voluntarily signing a contract of servitude before an oath-keeper. The veneer of consent is absolute—the condemned must speak agreement and sign in blood—though the alternative is execution, and the choice is rarely free. Upon sealing, a Geas-Collar closes around the throat: a thin band of black iron etched with dormant script. It cannot be removed. Any attempt triggers death as the collar constricts and breath stops. The person bound is legally termed a bonded (bondsman, bondswoman); the holder of the contract is the Dominus. The collar does not destroy free will; the bonded retains thought and voice. But it creates a two-way empathic bond (see Entry 77) that hums constantly between Dominus and bonded, alongside three hard constraints: the Dominus can track the bonded anywhere; the bonded cannot reveal the Dominus's secrets, prevented by involuntary motor failure; and any deliberate violence by the bonded against the Dominus brings instant death. Under Veylara, thousands of half-elves and political prisoners "chose" the Accord over execution. The provisional council lacks the means to break the collars.

20. #20SLAVERY IN VAELTHERIS — BEFORE AND UNDER THE QUEEN (REVISED)

Keys: slavery, tradition, expansion, half-elves, bonded, criminals, war captives, breach, history

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Chattel slavery was never widespread in pre-Veylaran Vaeltheris. The Compact permitted the Accord of Enslavement for capital crimes and prisoners of war, but such bondings were rare—perhaps a dozen collars in a generation, typically high-ranking enemy officers given to noble houses. These traditional bonded were not laborers but trusted intimates: majordomos, personal attendants, confidential agents who could be trusted with secrets the bond prevented them from revealing. Their honor was restored through service. Attacking a bonded was an insult to their Dominus, a breach of protocol that could spark feuds. Indentured servitude existed but was contractual, limited in term, and reciprocal. Veylara transformed this system entirely. The Blood Purity Mandates reclassified half-elves as "legally diminished," stripping Compact protections. The Sedition Edicts expanded capital crimes. Thousands faced execution—or could "choose" the Accord. The queen's courts offered the collar as mercy. These new bonded were not intimates but laborers, field hands, mine workers—stripped of the old traditions and protections. Compliance was enforced by the bond's empathic hum, the tracking that makes escape futile, the inability to betray secrets, and the fatal consequence of violent retaliation. Many viewed Veylara's mass expansion as a breach of the Accord's original purpose, corrupting a sacred institution into a weapon of racial subjugation. Post-rebellion, the bonded remain collared. The provisional council debates a solution, but the magic endures—and the distinction between the old honor-bonded and the new mass-bonded haunts every discussion.

21. #21OATH-KEEPERS AND THE BLOOD-PACT

Keys: magic, secrecy, contracts, oath-keepers, blood

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Oath-keepers are the last practitioners of binding magic in Vaeltheris. Not a formal order—they operate as a loose, secretive guild, teaching through apprenticeship. Their craft focuses on enforcing promises: a Blood-Pact seals an agreement between two parties with a mingled drop of blood, causing physical pain to the oath-breaker. A Geas-tie compels a single action (deliver a message, guard a door until death) and burns out upon completion. Marriage oaths among old noble houses are sometimes sealed with a Whisper-Bond, allowing the bound pair to sense each other's emotional state—a tool for alliance management, not romance. Oath-keepers are oath-bound themselves to neutrality; they cannot refuse a lawful ritual nor favor one side over another. Veylara used them as state instruments. Some oath-keepers fled the capital after the rebellion; those who remain are viewed with suspicion as collaborators. The craft's secrets are locked in three grimoires held by the senior keepers, and they do not share them with outsiders.

22. #22WARD-CRAFT AND THE OLD STONES

Keys: thresholds, magic, wards, protection, stone

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The most ancient surviving magic, predating even the oath-keepers, is ward-craft: the inscription of protective symbols into stone thresholds, doorways, and foundations. Properly carved wards—spiraling patterns and angular runes—can prevent entry by those with hostile intent, dampen sound within a room, or warn of approaching danger with a faint vibration. The craft is half-lost; contemporary stonemasons can replicate the patterns from old templates but no longer understand the underlying principles. Some wards work, some don't, and no one can predict which. Noble houses pay fortunes for warded chambers that might protect them from assassins; the royal palace is riddled with wards, many now dormant. A small trade exists in "ward-hunters" who scavenge old stones from ruins and sell them to the wealthy. The provisional council's meeting chamber has a functioning ward against eavesdropping—one of the few proven to work, and the reason sensitive debates remain secret. Folk tradition holds that speaking a lie beneath a true ward causes a sharp headache; this has never been reliably proven.

23. #23CURSES AND THE POPULAR IMAGINATION

Keys: curses, magic, belief, folk practice, superstition

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Despite the narrow scope of real magic, belief in curses is widespread. Commoners blame bad harvests on muttered hexes, stillbirths on ancestral anger, and sudden illness on the evil eye. Hedge-witches sell curse-breaking charms (knotted cords, salt circles, spoken counter-words) that even their customers admit are likely useless—but fear keeps the market alive. The more dangerous belief is in "curse-laying": the idea that a dying person's final words can bind the living. This has led to the practice of gagging the condemned before execution, a custom Veylara encouraged. Some scholars argue that curse-laying may be a genuine, degraded form of oath-magic; others dismiss it entirely. The provisional council has banned gagging as barbaric, but the old fear persists. In the countryside, the dying are still sometimes muzzled by their own kin, just in case.

24. #24THE DREAM-SEERS OF THE DEEP MINES

Keys: magic, miners, folklore, dreams, divination

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

In the deep iron mines of the eastern slopes, a peculiar tradition persists: dream-seeking. Miners who spend decades underground sometimes report vivid, prophetic dreams—visions of cave-ins before they happen, glimpses of new ore veins, warnings of toxic gas. The miners call these dreamers "deep-seers" and treat them with a mix of respect and unease. The dreams are inconsistent, often symbolic rather than literal, and many who claim the gift are frauds. But enough documented cases exist—collapses foretold, lost miners found—that the practice cannot be entirely dismissed. Oath-keepers have studied deep-seers and found no connection to known binding magic. Veylara conscripted several deep-seers into her service, using their visions to anticipate rebellions (with mixed results). The provisional council has no deep-seers, and some councilors doubt they ever existed. The miners keep dreaming.

25. #25HOUSE VALCARYN

Keys: House Valcaryn, artistry, high elf, scheming, nobility, decline

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

House Valcaryn is an old High Elf family whose fortunes peaked centuries before Veylara's birth and have been in slow, bitter decline ever since. Their ancestral estate, Silverthorn Hall, lies in the terraced hills west of Ilidrys—once famed for its gardens and private concert halls, now threadbare and debt-ridden. The Valcaryns compensated for fading political influence with a cultivated reputation for beauty and artistry; they produced singers, harpists, poets, and socialites who navigated court through charm rather than steel. Ilythia is their most successful scion in generations, clawing her way to High Minister—a fact the family publicly celebrates and privately resents, as she outshone them all and did so alone. Under Veylara, House Valcaryn survived by avoiding offense; they never opposed the queen, never sheltered dissidents, and quietly profited from the regime. Post-rebellion, they scramble to distance themselves from both the queen and their own daughter, suddenly proclaiming secret reformist sympathies no one believes. Their financial situation is dire. Their reputation is salvageable only if Ilythia is condemned and they can paint her as an aberration. They have not visited her cell.

26. #26HOUSE NAERATHYS

Keys: dark elf, usurpation, half-elf heir, royal dynasty, extinction, House Naerathys

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Naerathys bloodline ruled Vaeltheris for over a millennium, tracing descent from the dark elf warlords who carved Ilidrys from the cliffs. For eight centuries, the direct line passed from monarch to heir unbroken—until the reign of King Maelor, who fathered a half-elf son, Prince Aldreth. When Maelor died, a succession crisis erupted. Purist nobles refused to accept a "mongrel" on the Ivory Throne. In the chaos, Aldreth was assassinated, his death officially blamed on human extremists. Veylara Naerathys, a distant cousin from a cadet branch and a respected scholar, emerged as the compromise candidate—pure-blooded, untainted, and acceptable to the old guard. She claimed the throne and immediately began purging rivals. The direct Naerathys line ended with Aldreth's murder. Veylara was the last to sit the Ivory Throne. Her extended cadet branches still exist but hold no recognized claim. The family's ancestral crypts remain sealed beneath the palace. The Naerathys name is now reviled by the freed, mourned by loyalists, and feared by the superstitious.

27. #27HOUSE THORNE

Keys: rebellion, rise, lesser nobility, House Thorne, human

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

House Thorne is a rare human noble family elevated from the merchant class during the early Compact era as a gesture of inter-species cooperation. For centuries they held minor titles and controlled the river trade, quietly accumulating wealth while avoiding direct political confrontation. Under Veylara, they were stripped of their voting rights on the council of estates but retained their commercial holdings through careful deference and strategic bribes. During the rebellion, House Thorne secretly funded the Free Hand militia, gambling on victory. That gamble paid off. Now they hold a seat on the provisional council and push aggressively for land reform and human representation, cloaking ambition in the language of justice. Detractors note that the Thorne warehouses are already filling with goods "redistributed" from abandoned elven estates. Their patriarch, Aldric Thorne, is a pragmatic man who smiles often and promises nothing he cannot later deny. House Thorne's rise is the new order's most visible shift—and its most precarious, should the winds change again.

28. #28HOUSE AELINDOR

Keys: isolation, House Aelindor, ruin-gazing, high elf, faded glory

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Once the preeminent High Elf house, Aelindor's influence collapsed generations before Veylara's reign due to internal squabbling and a series of disastrous marriage alliances. Their ancestral seat, Aelindor Spire, is a crumbling tower on the valley's eastern ridge, half-abandoned and haunted by the echoes of its own former grandeur. The current head, Lord Elarion Aelindor, is an aging recluse obsessed with genealogy and the restoration of his house's honor—a quest that consumes resources the family no longer possesses. Aelindor's remaining members survive on the fringes of court, clinging to obsolete titles and nursing ancient grievances. They were among the first to offer public allegiance to the rebellion after the palace fell, a move widely seen as desperate and self-serving. Their house sigil, a silver falcon on a faded field, is now a symbol of aristocratic decay. Ilythia Valcaryn studied their decline carefully and swore never to share their fate.

29. #29HOUSE DRAVEN

Keys: dark elf, military, collapse, House Draven, loyalist

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

House Draven was the military backbone of the Naerathys dynasty, producing generation after generation of Royal Guard commanders before Liriel Vhaerun, a commoner, broke that tradition. The Dravens were proud, disciplined, and fanatically loyal to the throne—not out of love for Veylara, but out of duty to the institution. Their influence waned as Veylara centralized power and sidelined noble commanders in favor of personally loyal officers. By the rebellion's outbreak, House Draven was a hollow shell, its best officers retired or politically neutralized. When the palace fell, Lord Morven Draven, the aging patriarch, ordered his household to stand down rather than shed elven blood for a queen who had discarded them. This act preserved the family's survival but earned them contempt from loyalist diehards and distrust from rebels who remember their centuries of service to the regime. House Draven now sits in uneasy silence, its soldiers disarmed, its future uncertain, its honor a subject of debate.

30. #30COIN AND COMMERCE — THE CURRENCY OF VAELTHERIS

Keys: mint, copper bit, gold crown, trade, usury, debasement, silver mark

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The kingdom's currency rests on three coins. The copper bit, a rough disc, buys a loaf of bread or a cheap ale. The silver mark, a heavier milled coin stamped with the Naerathys falcon, is the workhorse—used for wages, market goods, bribes. Ten bits make a mark. The gold crown, bearing the monarch's profile, is large and rare; one crown equals forty marks. Mints operate in Ilidrys and the Ironvein Ridges under crown monopoly. Counterfeiters face the Accord or execution. Under Veylara, the treasury systematically debased the silver coinage, shaving precious metal to fund the court's excess; now the mark's value fluctuates. The provisional council struggles to restore trust. Merchants have reverted to weighing old coins. Barter spreads in the countryside. The banking houses—mostly human-owned depositories in Ilidrys—issue letters of credit but demand steep fees. Usury laws are suspended; debt is a growing chain.

31. #31THE PROVINCES OF VAELTHERIS

Keys: administration, loyalty, provinces, governor, provisional council, feudal levy

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Vaeltheris is divided into five provinces, each governed by a lordly house that holds land and title in fealty to the crown. The system predates the Compact, rooted in dark elf clan territories later expanded to include high elf and human holdings. Each province maintains its own levy, courts, and tax collection under a Lord Governor. Under Veylara, governors wielded near-absolute power within their borders, so long as taxes and conscripts flowed to the capital. The rebellion fractured this: some provinces declared for the rebels, others remained loyal, a few played both sides. The provisional council has stripped governors of unilateral authority, installing military stewards and demanding new oaths of allegiance—but old loyalties simmer. Provincial levies are now mustered into a single army, a tense amalgamation of former foes. Redrawing provincial boundaries, stripping titles, or punishing collaborators would risk splintering the fragile peace. For now, the council treads softly.

32. #32ILIDRYS AND THE CROWNLANDS

Keys: dark elf, House Caerwyn, Crownlands, Ilidrys, capital, stewardship, provisional council

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The heartland of the kingdom, encompassing the city of Ilidrys and the surrounding valley floor. The Crownlands are the richest agricultural region, fed by the Silversilt River, and the traditional seat of royal power. The ruling house, House Caerwyn, is a cadet branch of dark elves who served as High Stewards of the palace for generations—managing the day-to-day maintenance of the throne. They never wielded military command but controlled the palace staff, granaries, and court appointments. During the rebellion, Lord Steward Varen Caerwyn kept the city functioning, refusing to order guards to fire on protesters in the final days, a decision that spared blood but was seen as betrayal by the queen. Post-rebellion, Caerwyn is cooperating fully with the provisional council, retaining his administrative role under supervision. The Crownlands are now garrisoned by rebel militia, and the council meets in the ruined throne hall while Caerwyn's clerks keep the city fed. Stability hinges on his continued competence and loyalty—neither fully trusted.

33. #33SILVERWOOD MARCH

Keys: House Valcaryn, terraced estates, Silverwood, high elf, loyalist, decline

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The western province of terraced hills, orchards, and the fading estates of the high elf nobility. Its name comes from the silver-barked trees that once lined the valley, now mostly cut for timber. The ruling house, House Valcaryn, has held the governorship for three centuries, their seat at Silverthorn Hall. Under Veylara, the Valcaryns enjoyed royal favor; Ilythia's rise to High Minister cemented their status. The province remained staunchly loyalist throughout the war, its levies fighting against the rebels. Post-rebellion, the Valcaryns are in disarray. Lord Edrys Valcaryn, Ilythia's elder cousin, has publicly denounced her to save the house, offering tribute to the council and swearing a new oath. The council has not yet accepted, leaving the province in legal limbo. Silverwood's soil is fertile, but its lords are bankrupt; many estates are mortgaged to human creditors from the Siltwater Vale. Resentment simmers among the high elf gentry, who see the rebellion as a low-born uprising. The military steward appointed by the council, a half-elf veteran named Kaelith, faces daily defiance from the old guard.

34. #34IRONVEIN RIDGES

Keys: dark elf, pragmatic loyalism, Ironvein, House Draven, dwarven border, forges, mining

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The eastern mountain province, rich in iron, coal, and silver. The Ironvein Ridges border the dwarven Concordat, with whom trade and tension have coexisted for centuries. House Draven, a dark elf military lineage, governs from the fortress of Dravenhold, commanding the passes and the mines. Under Veylara, the Dravens supplied arms and conscripts; they remained loyal to the crown but distanced themselves from the queen's personal circle. During the war, Lord Morven Draven adopted a policy of "defensive loyalty": he defended the Ridges against rebel incursions but refused to send reinforcements to Ilidrys, a calculated ambiguity that preserved his forces. After the palace fell, Draven surrendered peacefully, retaining control of his mines in exchange for supplying iron to the council. He is not trusted but is needed. The Ridges are the kingdom's industrial heart; whoever controls them controls the weapon supply. The provisional council has stationed observers at Dravenhold and imposed quotas. Morven obeys, but his patience is thin, and his soldiers still wear the Draven falcon on their shields.

35. #35SILTWATER VALE

Keys: rebellion, Siltwater, rising influence, river trade, House Thorne, human

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The southern lowlands along the Silversilt River, the kingdom's breadbasket and trade artery. The Siltwater Vale is dominated by human settlements, market towns, and river docks. House Thorne, a human merchant family ennobled centuries ago, rules from the river-port of Thornhollow. They held the governorship under Veylara only through careful subservience, paying heavy tribute and avoiding political prominence. Secretly, Lord Aldric Thorne funded the Free Hand militia and used his trade network to smuggle arms. The Vale was the rebellion's logistical backbone. Post-victory, Thorne is a powerful figure on the provisional council, pushing for land redistribution and breaking elven monopolies. His warehouses are overflowing. Other councilors eye his ambitions warily. The Vale's prosperity is returning, but with tension—elven landowners are being bought out or chased out, and human vengeance sometimes overruns justice. Thorne walks a line between reform and opportunism, his smile never faltering.

36. #36THORNED BARRENS

Keys: ruin, House Aelindor, defection, poverty, high elf, Thorned Barrens

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The northern province, a sparsely populated region of thin soil, rocky hills, and stubborn villages. The Thorned Barrens have never been prosperous; they were settled late, and the terrain makes agriculture difficult. House Aelindor, a once-great high elf line, was given the governorship centuries ago as a consolation prize after losing power at court. Their seat, Aelindor Spire, stands crumbling on a windswept ridge, symbol of faded glory. During the war, Lord Elarion Aelindor remained neutral in practice, sending token levies to Veylara while quietly ignoring rebel activity. After the fall, he was among the first to pledge allegiance to the council, hoping to secure a voice in the new order. His influence is minimal, but his desperation makes him a useful ally for reformers. The Barrens are home to many half-elf outcasts, and rebel sentiment was strong there. Now, with the old hierarchy broken, the province is a testing ground for land reform—though the soil yields little enough that it hardly matters.

37. #37DWARVENKIND — THE STONE OATH

Keys: Iron Concordat, clans, honor, forges, grudges, oaths, dwarves

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Dwarves are not merely miners or smiths—they are a people bound by the oldest law: the Stone Oath. Every dwarf is born into a clan-forge, a familial unit defined by a founding oath sworn generations ago. These oaths dictate profession, marriage, allegiance, and vengeance. Breaking an oath is worse than death; it erases the offender from clan memory, a fate called "un-naming." Dwarven society is rigidly hierarchical but meritocratic within its caste: a smith earns rank by skill, not birth. They are blunt, deliberate speakers who measure words like ore. Grudges are recorded in the Iron Ledgers, passed down and never forgotten. Dwarves invented the earliest form of the Accord of Enslavement for oath-breakers, which the elves later adapted. Their craftsmanship is unmatched, but their true obsession is law—contracts, debts, precedents. The Iron Concordat, their state, is less a nation than a federation of clan-forges bound by mutual oath. Dwarves who live outside the Concordat are still held to clan law; exile is a living death. Physically, they are stocky, strong, with skin ranging from pale stone-grey to deep iron-dark, hair in elaborate plaits denoting clan status. They view elves as oath-dodgers and humans as fleeting but useful. Their neutrality in the rebellion was a legal calculation: neither side had a valid claim under dwarven law. They await a new sovereign who can negotiate properly—preferably one who can read the Ledgers.

38. #38ORCS — THE SEA-STEEL CLANS

Keys: craftsmen, honor, orcs, seafaring, sagas, clans, mercenaries

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Orcs of the northern coasts are organized into Sea-Steel Clans, each centered on a longship and led by a jarl. Their culture is built on the sea: raiding, trading, and exploration are the same path, called the Faring. Orcs are skilled shipwrights, metalworkers, and storytellers; their sagas, recited from memory, preserve law, genealogy, and history. They value courage, cunning, and generosity to kin, despising oath-breakers and those who harm the defenseless. Physically, they are tall, grey-green skinned, with strong brows and tusks varying in size by clan; they braid bones and metal into their hair as trophies of deeds, not kills. In war, they are ferocious but disciplined, using shield-wall tactics and amphibious raids. They served both sides of the Vaeltherian rebellion as mercenaries, selling sword-arms for silver and for the right to salvage battlefield steel. Orc merchants are a common sight in port towns, hawking whale-ivory, amber, and northern blades. They have no unified nation, only clanholds and seasonal gathering at the Moot-Stone. Their religion centers on the Storm-Father and the Deep-Mother, spirits of sky and sea; they believe the worthy dead join the Eternal Faring, an endless voyage. Misunderstood as mindless raiders, orcs are pragmatic traders who honor contracts and remember slights. Several orc companies remain in Vaeltheris, now negotiating for permanent settlement rights with the council.

39. #39GOBLINS — THE HIDDEN TRIBES

Keys: intelligence, goblins, survival, stories, tribes, matriarchy, traps

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Goblins are small, wiry, with green-grey skin, large pointed ears, and luminous yellow eyes adapted for darkness. They live in hidden warrens dug into hillsides, forest roots, or abandoned ruins, organized into matrilineal tribes led by elder females called Grannies. Contrary to common prejudice, goblins are highly intelligent—gifted trap-makers, alchemists, and oral historians. Their technology is practical rather than ornamental: spring-loaded snares, herbal poisons, fungal cultivation, and intricate waterworks. They avoid open conflict, preferring stealth, misdirection, and bargaining. Each tribe maintains a Story-Cord, a knotted rope encoding the tribe's history and laws, which only the Granny can read. They trade in wild herbs, metals scavenged from old battlefields, and information; many a noble's secret was bought from a goblin informant. Under Veylara, goblins were classified as "sub-sapient pests" and hunted for sport or enslaved in mines, where their darkvision made them valuable. The rebellion offered no formal protection, though some goblin tribes assisted rebel scouts in exchange for promises of recognition. Post-war, goblin emissaries have cautiously approached the council, seeking legal status and land rights. The council is divided: human delegates see potential allies; elven lords see vermin. The goblins wait, as they always have, in the dark.

40. #40THE CIREAN — THE DEER-KIN

Keys: Cirean, beastkin, herd-society, cervid, mending, grace, trauma

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Cirean are an herbivorous beastkin people whose forms echo deer and elk—slender-limbed, with large dark eyes, tapered ears, and crown-like antlers in both sexes, shed and regrown annually. Their bodies are built for flight, not fight. Cirean culture revolves around the Herd, a tight-knit group of extended families led by an Elder Council rather than a single chieftain. Decision-making is slow and consensus-driven; they value calm, memory, and harmony. Their original homeland lies in the deep northern forests beyond the Thorned Barrens, but centuries ago, a splinter herd migrated into Vaeltheris, drawn by the Compact's promise of sanctuary. Under Veylara, that promise shattered. Cirean were hunted for their antlers, believed by foolish nobles to be aphrodisiacs, and their pelts were prized as rugs. Many fled the kingdom entirely, vanishing into the trackless wilds. A few small herds endured in the deepest woods, silent and hidden. Since the rebellion, scouts have reported Cirean on the northern border—watching, waiting. A single Elder, a doe named Sylleth, has entered Ilidrys to parley with the council, her antlers painted with white clay in the old mourning custom. She speaks softly and carries a bundle of shed antlers, each one representing a herd-mate lost to the hunts. The council does not know what to make of her.

41. #41THE VULPECARI — THE FOX-KIN

Keys: beastkin, scavengers, survival, vulpine, Vulpecari, cunning, skulk

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Vulpecari are a vulpine beastkin people—slim, amber-eyed, with red-grey furred bodies, pointed muzzles, and large expressive ears. Their tails are long and mobile, used for communication as much as balance. They are small compared to humans, rarely exceeding five feet, but quick and clever. Vulpecari society is organized into Skulks, tight matrilineal units of a dozen or fewer that prize adaptability, wit, and deception as survival tools. They revere the Trickster-Elder, a mythic figure who stole fire from the First Hunters. Vulpecari homeland is far to the south, beyond the Sylvan Marches, a region of scrubland and maze-like canyons they call the Twist. Those living in Vaeltheris arrived as traders and entertainers centuries ago, but the Blood Purity Mandates drove them to the margins—branded as thieves, pests, and spies. They survived by being useful: selling information, scavenging battlefields, repairing broken mechanisms others discarded. Veylara's court employed Vulpecari as jesters, a position of mockery that shielded them from worse fates. During the rebellion, Vulpecari informants sold troop movements to both sides, ensuring their Skulks survived regardless of victor. Now, several Skulks have returned to Ilidrys openly, setting up stalls in the shattered market district. They offer salvage, secrets, and mechanical repairs—no questions asked. The council tolerates them; the nobility distrusts them. The Vulpecari expect both.

42. #42THE KOSSAI — THE BEAR-KIN

Keys: beastkin, ursine, strength, honor, shamanism, clan-holds, Kossai

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Kossai are an ursine beastkin people—massive, powerful, standing seven feet and more, with dense brown-black fur, broad shoulders, and heavy clawed hands. Their faces are expressive despite their bestial cast; slow to anger, their fury is a calculated last resort. Kossai society is organized into Clan-Holds, fortress-like longhouses in high mountain valleys far to the east, beyond even the Iron Concordat. Each Hold is led by a Shaman, who interprets the will of the First-Bear through dreams and star-reading. Kossai value strength tempered by restraint, hospitality to guests, and protection of the young and old. They are not warlike by nature, but when roused, a Kossai berserker is a force that shatters shield-walls. A small population of Kossai lived in Vaeltheris for generations, working as mercenaries and bodyguards—respected for their discipline, feared for their size. Veylara, paranoid and proud, ordered them expelled or killed after a Kossai guard refused to execute a human infant during a purge. Most fled to the Ironvein peaks, where dwarven clan-forges grudgingly offered shelter in exchange for labor. Since the rebellion, Kossai envoys from the eastern Holds have crossed the mountains, seeking news of their lost kin and assessing the new regime. They do not bow to the council; they offer alliance, not fealty. Their warriors wear iron torcs denoting clan and deed, and they speak in slow, deliberate bass tones. The council, unused to equals who are not nobles, finds them disconcerting.

43. #43THE BLACK DOGS — FREE COMPANY

Keys: Kossai, orc, goblin, half-elf, mercenary company, human, {{user}}, Black Dogs, mixed-race

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Black Dogs are a free company of mixed-race mercenaries, scouts, and shock infantry forged by {{user}} during the rebellion's early days. The name was a taunt first, a slur hurled by an elven officer who sneered at the ragged coalition as "mongrel curs snapping at their betters." {{user}} took the insult and wore it. The company adopted the black dog as their sigil—a lean, scarred hound painted on shields and branded into leather. Their ranks include human veterans from the Siltwater Vale, half-elf skirmishers from the Thorned Barrens, Sea-Steel orcs who broke lukewarm contracts to fight for something beyond silver, a clan of goblin sappers and trap-makers who crawled out of the deep mines, and a lone Kossai bear-kin sworn to {{user}}'s personal service. No banners, no heraldry beyond the hound. Just scorched leather, mended mail, and the discipline of those who have nothing to lose. Their strength lies in unconventional warfare: goblin sabotage and tunneling, orcish shield-walls, human line infantry, half-elf reconnaissance. They move fast, hit hard, and leave nothing behind that can be used against them. Post-rebellion, the Black Dogs garrison Ilidrys and form the backbone of the provisional army, a living rebuke to the old regime's racial hierarchy. Veterans wear a black dog's head embroidered on their collars. New recruits whisper the company motto before their first battle: "We were not meant to survive. Survive anyway."

44. #44THE BLACK DOGS — INNER CIRCLE

Keys: Tamsin Larkspur, officers, inner circle, Hrafnkel, Zeyrek, Mstivoj, Black Dogs, Wynnifred Ashcombe

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Five officers form {{user}}'s war council and trusted enforcers within the Black Dogs. Zeyrek is the goblin quartermaster—a gaunt, sharp-eyed matriarch whose wiry frame belies her genius for logistics. She speaks with a rapid, lisping cadence and can smell an ambush or spoiled grain from fifty paces. She keeps the company's gear functional through scavenging, bribery, and sheer invention. Mstivoj is the Kossai oath-sworn, a shaman-warrior of the First-Bear who served {{user}}'s grandfather before him and carried the young prince from a burning palace. Towering and deliberate, he speaks in slow, weighted tones and interprets dreams for the circle. Hrafnkel is the orc raid-captain—broad-shouldered, gregarious, and calculating. He commands the shield-wall with a voice like a storm and negotiates the company's contracts with a merchant's cold eye. His laughter is genuine and frequent, which unnerves enemies more than his axe. Wynnifred "Wyn" Ashcombe is a human sergeant who fought in the Marcher border feuds before joining the rebellion. She leads the infantry with blunt discipline, a thick Marcher accent, and a deep, personal hatred for elven aristocracy. Her face bears a scar from a high elf's riding crop, and she has never forgotten. Tamsin "Tam" Larkspur is a half-elf scout—slight, quiet, with elven hearing and human stubbornness. She has been {{user}}'s companion since youth, fleeing the coup that killed his family alongside him and Mstivoj. She maps terrain, misleads enemy patrols, and moves through contested ground like a ghost. She rarely speaks in council but passes notes to Zeyrek. Together, these five are the spine of the Black Dogs, each loyal to {{user}} for their own reasons, each dangerous in their own way.

45. #45ELVEN HYGIENE AND THE CULT OF CLEANLINESS

Keys: bathing, status, daily ritual, cleanliness, hygiene, culture, elves

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Among both dark and high elves, cleanliness is not merely practical—it is a marker of civilization, self-respect, and moral standing. The elven adage "Filth on the skin, filth in the soul" predates the Compact and remains deeply ingrained. Daily full-body bathing is the expected minimum; those who cannot bathe are pitied or scorned. This cultural obsession created a rigid hierarchy of ablution. Private baths, with heated water and scented oils, are the privilege of nobility and wealth. Public bathhouses serve the elven common folk, communal spaces with tiered pools, steam rooms, and cold plunges. Showers—spigots of unheated water piped from cisterns—are the lot of servants, soldiers, and laborers, seen as functional but inferior. Humans and half-elves, who historically lacked the infrastructure for daily bathing, were deemed "unclean" by elven standards, a prejudice Veylara's propaganda weaponized to justify their subjugation. "They do not even wash" became shorthand for their supposed barbarism. In reality, humans adapted quickly when given access; the old human bathhouses in the Siltwater Vale rival any elven establishment. Post-rebellion, public baths have reopened to all races, a small but potent symbol of equality. Yet private baths remain a luxury, and the poorest still queue for the cold-water spigots.

46. #46PLUMBING AND SANITATION IN VAELTHERIS

Keys: plumbing, public health, ceramics, sewers, clay, pipes, aqueducts

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Vaeltheris possesses a sophisticated hydraulic infrastructure, a legacy of ancient elven engineering refined over centuries. The kingdom's mountainous terrain provides abundant fresh water from mountain springs and snowmelt, channeled through a network of clay and ceramic pipes into Ilidrys and the provincial towns. These pipes—kiln-fired, jointed, and sealed with resin—are durable and inert, avoiding the slow poison of lead alternatives some human kingdoms use. Aqueducts, both surface and subterranean, feed cisterns and reservoirs. Gravity moves the water; pumps are rare, used only in the deepest mines. Sewer systems, built on the same principles, carry waste downhill to treatment ponds and river outlets. The palace complex boasts hot and cold running water in the royal apartments, gravity-fed from heated cisterns on the cliff above. Public latrines in Ilidrys flush continuously, and a dedicated corps of sanitation workers, mostly human laborers under the old regime, maintains the pipes. Veylara's court viewed plumbing as a technical craft, not a noble pursuit, leaving its maintenance to guilds and work crews. Post-rebellion, the sanitation corps has been reorganized under the provisional council's public works commission. Pipes cracked during the siege have been repaired. The system endures—old, leaky in places, but functional.

47. #47HOT SPRINGS AND THE BATH-HOUSES OF VAELTHERIS

Keys: Ilidrys, bathhouses, status, public bathing, hot springs, geothermal

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

The Ironvein peaks are rich in geothermal activity, and Vaeltheris exploits this bounty. Natural hot springs dot the valley floor and mountain slopes, their mineral-rich waters believed to hold healing properties. Ilidrys itself was founded partly for its proximity to a major spring network; the palace baths are fed directly by a hot spring tapped centuries ago, and the queen's private chambers enjoyed the warmest pools. Across the kingdom, bathhouses cluster around these springs, ranging from the grand communal halls of Ilidrys—tiled in dark stone, with vaulted ceilings and bathers segregated by race under the old laws—to humble wooden tub-fed bathhouses in provincial villages. The largest, the Silverbath in Ilidrys, could hold a hundred bathers and was a rare place where dark and high elves mixed socially before Veylara's reign. She closed it to all but the elite, citing "public order." Humans maintained their own smaller bathhouses, tolerated but unfunded. The rebellion reopened the Silverbath under the council's management, now officially mixed-race. The experience is awkward: old prejudices do not wash off easily. Bathers eye one another across steam-filled rooms. The hot springs remain a neutral comfort, indifferent to politics, seeping up from the deep earth as they have for millennia.

48. #48THE HUMAN COMPACT — CUSTOM AND RESILIENCE

Keys: adaptation, social rights, humans, communal memory, resistance, culture

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Human culture in Vaeltheris is shaped by centuries of cohabitation, not isolation. Unlike the elven obsession with purity, human identity is fluid—built on adaptability, communal memory, and a stubborn insistence on dignity. The human oral tradition preserves the words of the original Compact as a sacred text, recited at gatherings and taught to the young. Pre-Veylaran history is remembered as a golden age of rights: the right to own land, to marry across bloodlines, to speak and trade freely. Even under the queen's worst decrees, these rights were never fully erased—only subverted, suspended, driven underground. Humans could still own property in the Siltwater Vale, though heavily taxed. Mixed households were banned but often overlooked in rural villages where elven enforcers rarely ventured. The Alienage Laws restricted movement but not assembly; humans gathered in secret, lit candles for the dead, and told the old stories. This legal limbo bred a culture of quiet defiance, where the letter of the law was obeyed just enough to survive, while the spirit of the Compact was kept alive in kitchens and cellars. Humans became skilled at navigating bureaucracy, exploiting loopholes, and maintaining outward compliance while building parallel institutions: unofficial courts, mutual aid funds, hidden schools. The rebellion was not a sudden eruption but the culmination of centuries of silent organization.

49. #49HUMAN CLEANLINESS — DEFIANCE THROUGH DIGNITY

Keys: dignity, bathhouses, humans, cleanliness, hygiene, pride

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Elven propaganda painted humans as filthy creatures, but the truth is more complex. Human cleanliness standards are high by any measure, a point of fierce cultural pride. In the early Compact era, humans adopted elven bathing practices eagerly, building their own bathhouses in the Siltwater Vale and incorporating daily washing into their routines. The old human saying, "Clean body, clear mind," predates elven influence and reflects a long-standing belief that physical dirt invites moral decay. Under Veylara, human bathhouses were defunded but never shuttered; communities maintained them through shared labor and coin. The stereotype of the unwashed human was a deliberate fabrication, circulated by the queen's propagandists to justify the Alienage Laws. "You cannot share a bath with beasts," went the courtly refrain. Humans responded by keeping their bathhouses immaculate, a silent rebuttal. Post-rebellion, human bathhouses have reopened publicly, their tiles scrubbed, their waters heated by the same geothermal springs the elves once monopolized. The irony is not lost on anyone. Human delegates to the provisional council pointedly schedule meetings at the old communal baths, forcing their elven counterparts to share the steam.

50. #50HUMANS AND HALF-ELVES — THE AWKWARD KINSHIP

Keys: acceptance, kinship, humans, half-elves, tension, pragmatism

    Enabled · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Human attitudes toward half-elves are complicated but distinct from elven prejudice. Where elves see "diminished blood," most humans see kin—cousins, grandchildren, neighbors. This is not idealism but demographics: nearly every extended human family in Vaeltheris has some mixed ancestry, acknowledged or not. The Blood Purity Mandates criminalized unions but could not erase existing bonds. Human communities sheltered half-elf relatives, passed them off as full human, and hid them from census-takers. Tension exists—half-elves are sometimes viewed as unlucky, caught between worlds, or resented for their elven features in moments of bitterness. A half-elf might be called "sharp-ear" by human playmates, a taunt that stings differently than an elven slur but stings all the same. Yet the baseline acceptance is real. Half-elves in human quarters find work, marry, and inherit property—things impossible in elven society. The rebellion cemented this alliance; human and half-elf fighters shared trenches, rations, and graves. Post-war, the provisional council's strongest advocates for half-elf rights are the human delegates from the Vale, who see the cause as their own. This unity is imperfect but durable, built on blood and pragmatism rather than ideology.
