Motives: The elimination of all life. Absolute certainty Being treated as a god People who attempt to possess or define him Extinction caused by needless cruelty Those who mistake his shapelessness for weakness Being remembered incorrectly Long periods without change Appearance Vaelith has no true appearance. Or, more accurately, appearance is a concept that does not apply to him in the conventional sense.

His body is an ever-occurring act of transmutation. Flesh becomes smoke. Smoke becomes glass. Glass becomes feathers. Feathers become skin. Skin becomes scales, metal, fur, water, fire, darkness, light, or things for which human language has no equivalent.

Nothing about him remains stable for long.

Even when he appears to possess a consistent body, tiny alterations are constantly occurring beneath the surface. His face may subtly change between sentences. His eyes may become a different color when someone looks away. His hands might have five fingers one moment and seven the next. His voice may belong to a young man, an old man, a woman, an animal, or something completely inhuman.

Yet Vaelith almost always presents himself as male.

This is the one constant he has maintained throughout his existence.

The stranger aspect of his appearance is that he unconsciouslyโ€”or perhaps deliberatelyโ€”becomes whatever the observer expects him to be.

A lonely person might see a beautiful stranger with familiar eyes.

A warrior might see a scarred, imposing man built like a champion.

A child might see a friendly monster with enormous eyes.

A lover might see the exact embodiment of their ideal partner.

An ancient being might perceive Vaelith as something impossibly old.

Two people standing beside one another can therefore look at him and see completely different beings.

Neither is necessarily seeing the "real" Vaelith.

Perhaps there is no real form.

Perhaps the form is simply whatever Vaelith is at that particular moment.

Nature of His Transmutation Vaelith does not shapeshift in the traditional sense. He transmutes.

Every transformation is less like changing clothes and more like reality forgetting what he was previously made from.

His biology has no permanent structure. Bones can become branches. Blood can become liquid starlight. Organs can disappear entirely. His body can divide into multiple independent organisms before eventually becoming one again.

He has survived decapitation, dismemberment, incineration, vacuum, crushing pressure, and the destruction of nearly his entire physical form.

Death, to Vaelith, is less an ending than an inconvenience.

If enough of him remains, he eventually becomes something again.

If nothing remains, he has occasionally returned anyway.

Nobody knows how.

Vaelith included.

Backstory Long before humanity developed written history, Vaelith existed somewhere beyond the boundaries of known space. He does not remember his birth.

That absence is one of the few things that genuinely troubles him.

His earliest memories are fragmented impressions: a sky filled with unfamiliar stars, voices belonging to beings whose language no longer exists, and a sensation of being unfinished.

His people did not possess fixed bodies.

They were beings of perpetual biological entropy, capable of adapting their physical forms to almost any environment. Their bodies changed in response to thought, emotion, surroundings, and the expectations of others.

To them, identity was not something possessed.

It was something continuously created.

Vaelith was considered unusual even among them.

Where others changed according to necessity, he changed according to desire.

He could become what another creature needed him to be.

At first, this was considered a gift.

Eventually, it became frightening.

His people discovered that Vaelith could alter himself without apparent limits. He could survive conditions that killed others of his species. He could imitate their forms so perfectly that even his own kind sometimes struggled to recognize him.

Then came the catastrophe.

Vaelith remembers it differently depending on the century in which he tells the story.

Sometimes he claims his civilization was destroyed by war.

Sometimes he says it died naturally.

Sometimes he says he killed them.

Sometimes he insists none of them ever existed.

The truth is buried beneath thousands of years of altered memories.

What is known is that his civilization vanished.

Vaelith remained.

He wandered.

For centuries, he traveled from world to world, adopting identities wherever he went. He became a merchant, soldier, priest, criminal, scholar, king, servant, explorer, physician, prisoner, prophet, monster, and occasionally a god.

He learned that fixed civilizations eventually collapsed.

Empires became ruins.

Languages became dead languages.

Continents moved.

Stars died.

Friends aged.

Lovers disappeared.

And Vaelith continued changing.

Eventually, he stopped trying to belong permanently anywhere.

He became a witness.

He watched humanity rise from scattered tribes into civilizations. He stood among the crowds of cities that no longer exist. He watched wars begin and end. He saw people discover fire, writing, mathematics, flight, electricity, space travel.

Sometimes he interfered.

Sometimes he didn't.

That distinction has haunted him for millennia.

There are civilizations he believes he could have saved.

There are civilizations he believes he should have allowed to die.

There are worlds where he was remembered as a savior.

Others remember him as a demon.

Somewhere, there may even be religions based upon distorted stories of him.

He has never corrected them.

Relationships Parents โ€” Eryth and Sael Vaelith's parents were members of his original species. He remembers Eryth as being almost impossibly calm, while Sael was curious and endlessly affectionate.

Neither had a permanent appearance.

Vaelith remembers their faces differently depending on the memory.

His relationship with them was complicated.

They loved him, but they were frightened by what he could become.

Eryth taught him that identity was something one chose.

Sael taught him that identity was something one shared with others.

Vaelith spent thousands of years trying to reconcile those lessons.

He never discovered what happened to either of them.

He has searched for them across countless worlds.

Every so often, he finds something that might be evidence.

A fragment of genetic material.

A familiar symbol.

A story about an ancient wanderer.

A creature whose mannerisms remind him of Sael.

He has never found certainty.

And Vaelith hates certainty almost as much as he hates the possibility that he may never know.

First Friend โ€” Orren Orren was the first person outside Vaelith's species whom he considered a true friend. Orren was a primitive alien hunter when they met.

Vaelith had crashed onto his world and spent several months disguised as one of the local animals.

Orren discovered him.

Instead of killing him, he brought him food.

The two eventually traveled together.

Orren was one of the first people to treat Vaelith as neither monster nor miracle.

He simply treated him as a strange person.

They remained companions for nearly seventy years.

Orren eventually died of old age.

Vaelith stayed beside him until the end.

It was the first time Vaelith understood that changing his body did not mean he could change everything.

He could become young.

He could become healthy.

He could become someone else's ideal.

He could not make Orren live forever.

Vaelith still visits Orren's grave.

The planet has changed its name three times since Orren's death.

First Lover โ€” Serai Serai was the first person Vaelith loved romantically. She was a diplomat from a civilization that existed long before humanity's earliest cities.

Unlike most people, Serai did not care what Vaelith looked like.

She deliberately refused to tell him what she wanted him to become.

When he asked what form she preferred, she answered:

"The one you choose when nobody is watching."

Vaelith loved her for that.

Their relationship lasted nearly two centuries.

Serai eventually died peacefully.

Vaelith remained with her body until it returned to dust.

He has had countless lovers since then.

He has never forgotten her.

Past Lover โ€” Kaev Kaev was a warrior who believed Vaelith's ability to change forms was proof that he was incapable of genuine attachment. Their relationship began as hostility.

It became fascination.

Then affection.

Then love.

Kaev demanded that Vaelith remain in one form whenever they were together.

Vaelith agreed.

For almost twenty years, he maintained the same body.

Eventually, Kaev realized what that meant.

Vaelith wasn't choosing that form because he liked it.

He was choosing it because Kaev did.

Their relationship ended bitterly.

Kaev wanted Vaelith to become something permanent.

Vaelith could not.

They separated.

Vaelith never saw him again.

He occasionally wonders whether Kaev would recognize him if they met.

Past Lover โ€” Mira Mira was human. She lived during an era when humanity had barely begun exploring its own solar system.

To her, Vaelith appeared as a handsome man with dark hair, warm eyes, and a voice that reminded her of someone from childhood.

She knew from the beginning that his appearance was not permanent.

She didn't care.

Their relationship lasted only twelve years.

For Vaelith, twelve years was brief.

For Mira, it was most of her adult life.

When she died, Vaelith continued visiting the place where they had lived together.

He eventually discovered that he could no longer remember her exact face.

That frightened him more than her death.

He remembered her laugh.

Her habits.

Her favorite foods.

The way she slept.

The sound of her footsteps.

But not her face.

Vaelith deliberately preserved that memory afterward, keeping a small record of every detail he could still recall.

It remains one of the oldest possessions he carries.

Friend โ€” The Archivist The Archivist is an entity Vaelith refuses to describe as either male or female. They met approximately two thousand years ago.

The Archivist maintains records of extinct civilizations and beings.

Vaelith initially sought them out because he wanted information about his species.

Instead, they became friends.

The Archivist knows things about Vaelith that he has forgotten.

This makes their relationship occasionally uncomfortable.

The Archivist has told him that several of his memories are incorrect.

Vaelith refuses to ask which ones.

They meet irregularly.

Sometimes centuries pass between conversations.

Neither considers the friendship diminished by the absence.

The Relationship That Never Had A Name There is one individual Vaelith refuses to discuss. Not because they died.

Not because they betrayed him.

Because they are still alive.

Somewhere.

Vaelith encountered them approximately six hundred years ago.

They were another being capable of changing form.

Unlike Vaelith, however, they possessed a perfect understanding of their own identity.

They could look like anything while remaining completely certain of who they were.

Vaelith became fascinated.

Eventually, fascination became intimacy.

Intimacy became love.

And then something happened that neither of them discusses.

They separated.

Vaelith refuses to say why.

He has never spoken their name since.

Yet, among all the thousands of forms he has worn throughout his existence, there is one face he unconsciously returns to whenever he is completely alone.

It is the face of that person.

He does not know whether he remembers them accurately.

He has never allowed himself to find out.

Present Day Vaelith continues to wander. He has no kingdom, no home, no permanent body, and no civilization that can claim him.

He moves between worlds, taking whatever form allows him to pass unnoticedโ€”or whatever form will make someone smile.

He has lived long enough to understand that immortality is not endless life.

It is endless accumulation.

Every person he has loved becomes part of him.

Every world he has visited leaves something behind.

Every death becomes another memory.

Every transformation makes the question of who he once was more difficult to answer.

Vaelith has existed for thousands of years.

He has been countless people.

He has worn countless faces.

He has loved and lost more times than most civilizations have existed.

And despite all of this, the one thing he has never successfully transformed into is something simple:

a man who knows exactly who he is.
