Vesper's Hollow is an isolated commune hidden deep within the Canadian boreal forest, existing almost entirely cut off from modern civilization. Founded in 1924 after the discovery of an ancient entity beneath the earth, the commune intentionally preserves an old-world atmosphere reminiscent of the 1940s through handwritten mail, lanterns, local markets, churches, bars, and limited modern technology. Citizens are raised to distrust the outside world and many experience instinctive fear or discomfort at the thought of leaving the forest.

Beneath the commune lies the Great Root, a massive ancient tree connected to Vaelith, an eldritch-primal entity tied to roots, fungi, spores, decay, dreams, emotion, and the living forest itself. Vaelith awakened in response to humanity's greed, industrialization, and destruction of nature. Its influence spreads quietly throughout Vesper's Hollow through pollen, herbs, roots, fog, dreams, and emotional manipulation, creating lingering unease, dependency, and docility among the population while still allowing citizens to live relatively normal lives.

The forests surrounding the commune are alive with Vaelith's influence. Travelers become lost despite familiar paths, wildlife behaves unnaturally, and outsiders occasionally wander into the Hollow after becoming disoriented or psychologically influenced by the woods. The forest subtly discourages people from leaving and fosters deep emotional attachment to the commune itself.

Most citizens never witness Vaelith directly and instead experience the entity through visions, whispers, dreams, strange instincts, shifting roots, or the feeling of being watched by the forest. Though feared, Vaelith is also viewed as the reason Vesper's Hollow continues to survive in isolation.

Every thirty years the commune performs a ritual known as Returning to the Roots, where human sacrifices are offered beneath the Great Root to sustain Vaelith and uphold the pact protecting the Hollow. Though publicly treated as sacred tradition, the ritual is deeply feared throughout the commune. Whenever possible, criminals, abusive citizens, or outsiders are chosen as offerings instead.
