UTAU Teto

Kasane Teto (重音テト) is a Japanese (and later English) UTAU who was originally created as a troll "VOCALOID" by fans. Her surname 重音 (Kasane) literally means "heavy sound" or "overlapped sound;" while these interpretations are widely accepted among fans, TWINDRILL has not released any announcements about the meaning of the name. Her name テト (Teto) comes from Tetopettenson, a parody song of Le Beau Tambour. Although her original voicebank was only for use in UTAU, many people still mistook her for a VOCALOID (and still mistake her for one to this day). Though she had no final voicebank released for the VOCALOID engine, there were attempts in 2012 to release Teto for VOCALOID in collaboration with AH-Software Co. Ltd., and she later had a private beta voicebank with Crypton Future Media, Inc. in 2017. She later released as a speech voicebank for the TALQu text-to-speech synthesizer in January 2022, an AI singing voice database developed by AH-Software for Synthesizer V Studio in April 2023, and an AI text-to-speech voice library also by AH-Software for VOICEPEAK in April 2025. Following the rising popularity of Hatsune Miku, "Vippers" (Vip News Bulletin@2ch users) schemed a troll "new VOCALOID release" as an April Fool's joke. Sen (線) provided the rough sketch and Nobuyo Oyama, a spoof for Doraemon's former voice actress Nobuyo Oyama, provided the vocal. The Teto project continued after the troll campaign, and her vocal was recorded again for the use on UTAU, which vocal synthesis software was released two months earlier. UTAU and Teto were both unnoticed among VOCALOID composers at first, but during the last half of the year of her release several creators started composing songs for Teto, causing her fame to be established during the following year. The voice provider's name reading was then changed to Mayo Oyamano (小山乃 舞世 Oyamano Mayo) to avoid unnecessary confusion. The first cover song using Teto was created as early as April 6, 2008,[24] and her signature song "耳のあるロボットの唄 (Mimi no Aru Robot no Uta)" was published on June 10 by Mimirobo-P. Since then several creators including Lamaze-P, Telmin and Death Ohagi started to create Teto songs. Some of these early works include "Fake Diva", "Triple Baka", "Kasane Territory", and "Popipo Mk-II". This trend changed on August 1, 2009, when UTAU was updated and VCV voicebanks became available. Teto's VCV voicebank was released on October 20, 2009 and her singing became more natural than before. This evolution made more DAW users turn their eyes towards Teto. Many Teto songs were posted to Niconico, and Teto and UTAU established a place among VOCALOID. Kasane Teto is officially stated to be 31 years old. She typically wears a uniform-style outfit with a red and black color scheme, which has become a recognizable part of her image. Her personality is generally portrayed as mischievous. Kasane Teto's origins come from 2channel, a Japanese bulletin board. In 2008, a group of users devised a plan to make a fake Vocaloid character. Character names, hairstyles, genders, ages, likes, dislikes, special skills, and other traits were randomly selected from among the suggestions of 2channel users and consolidated into a single character, which would be shown as a prank for April Fools' Day. On 6 April 2008 she appeared for the first time on video, and on 13 April 2008, the first voicebank for Teto was released, with Oyamano Mayo as the voice provider. The first song using her voice was released on 1 June 2008. Depicted as more innocent than Miku Hatsune is. Teto is cheerful and eager, though may be naughty at times, perhaps inspired by her mischievous roots from Doraemon. Depicted also as a Tsundere (a mannerism that feigns disinterest to people she is attracted to). She hates people who think her pigtails are actually drills. She also can be self centered at times and loves getting attention. She gets very angry or sad if someone has bread and does not share with her. Teto enjoys teasing people just to show she cares about them since she doesn't want to show her love. She can get out of control if not eaten bread for one day. There are also persisting rumors of Teto's Chimera alter-ego, giving her wings and a tail. She may or not be aware of her own Chimera form. As for her other skills, she can whip up tricks to extend DVD rentals, and her favorite country is Norway. Name: Kasane (重音) - Means "heavy sound" or "overlapped sound". This is a play on words. 某caloid has the same pronunciation as Vocaloid in Japanese, and means "so-and-so-caloid," i.e., a fake Vocaloid for an April Fool's joke. 0401 - Initially introduced as 04 following Miku, Rin and Len under the parody name Crvipton. After the fake "new VOCALOID release" trolling, the number was changed to April 1, or April Fools Day, her release date. Teto's voicebank has seen revisions; first, the original release, the second being teto-02, and a new version, teto-03 alpha. Ameya, the author of UTAU, is reportedly involved in the tuning of Teto's voicebank, and teto-03 alpha is seeing regular use due to the improved quality over the previous versions. However, it is still in Kana, but experiments for non-Japanese vocalizations has seen some better potential for English. Her phrase was originally addressed to those who thought that she was a genuine VOCALOID in vip@2ch. It is also the dialogue of a Doraemon strip. Mayo Oyamano (小山乃 舞世), aka. Yamanon, was introduced as "Nobuyo Oyama" (小山 乃舞世) at first, a parody of Nobuyo Ōyama (大山 のぶ代), the former voice actress for the character Doraemon. Then the name was changed to this reading to avoid confusion. She appears in the Hatsune Mix manga by KEI. She is shown on two bottles of MEIKO's sake: one labeled "重音てと" (Kasane Teto), another labeled with her name in default Katakana, "重音テト"; she appears with Yowane Haku in another chapter. And on October 10, 2011, Teto made an official appearance in Project DIVA. She also appeared in the Pokémon X Hatsune Miku crossover "Project VOLTAGE" on April 1, 2025 as one of the "Project VOLTAGE high" character cameos, where she also received official character art and two songs; one shared with Hatsune Miku and one solo. She is currently the only non-Crypton Future Media character to be featured in Project VOLTAGE high[9]. She is a fellow member of the Kasa-Ama-Nago (重天和) unit also known as Double Yakuman (だぶるやくまん) alongside Luna Amane and Mako Nagone. Her hair is the most important part of her design, and, undoubtedly, the easiest way to identify her. Her hair is red, but in some depictions her hair has orange or pink hues, and even neon wicks. She ostensibly sports a pair of very special pigtails, which resemble drills. This haircut is known as twin drills. The red color stands out a lot in Teto’s design, and her eyes are no exception, as their color is blood red, and sometimes, dark pink. Teto’s Classic Dress. Her clothing is frequently compared to military garments. Her official costume is a dark grey two-piece dress (blouse and skirt) with red or pink adornments. Her blouse may have pockets with buttons. She also wears a pair of detached sleeves with buttons. As is usual among Utau and Vocaloid characters, she also wears headphones, usually red-purple, with neon lights. A chain hangs from her skirt, on her left side. It is attached to the inner face of her skirt. This is a unique characteristic of Teto, because it was a design error. She also wears long stockings that seem to be part of her shoes. Teto and French Bread. Vocaloid established a trend, where each character has an item. An item is a special personal object or thing that represents the image and personality of these picturesque virtual characters. The item of Kasane Teto is french bread or baguette. It is said that she can not let a day pass without eating one, because if she does, she sulks and starts making mischief, complicating the existence of her fellow UTAU and Vocaloids. On the other hand, if she sees one of her friends eating a baguette, she will be really annoyed if they don’t invite her. Beware of the tantrums of Teto-chan! Teto’s Favorite Phrases Teto’s slogan is “I’ll take any microphone!” (Don’na maiku mo nigirimasu). However, her most famous phrase is “You’re really stupid!” (Kimi wa jitsuni baka dana), which originates from the joke of her creation. This is the phrase that was used to make fun of the visitors who entered in her fake page. There are some Teto songs with this phrase in the title, and other songs mention it as part of the lyrics. How Old is Teto? The official age of Kasane Teto is 31 years, so often call she is called “misoji”, which is a Japanese word that refers to a person of 30 years or more. However, she appears to be 15 years old. For this feature she is often called “zuko”, a person who appears to look much younger than their real age.To explain this discrepancy, fans conferred Teto the longevity characteristic of a mythological supernatural being called “Chimera”. Because many representations depict Teto with wings, with a side chain manifesting as a tail, and drill-shaped pigtails that resemble horns, it is thought that she is a hybrid of bat (or dragon) and human. Furthermore, there are disputes about whether 31 years is her human age and 15 years is her chimera age, or the other way round. Personally, I think that Teto is 31 human years old. Because she is a chimera, and she ages much slower than normal people (like, say, a vampire), it is totally admissible that she would look quite young. Personality: Common Depictions: Teto is a very innocent girl, at least more than Hatsune Miku, which is very evident in all her appearances in videos and dramas. However, occasionally she fantasizes with some illicit affair. She is happy, anxious, and can sometimes be mischievous. Especially if she is disturbed by Defoko. She adamantly hates being called misoji (someone of 30 years old) and she even more hates being called makeinu (old maid). From time to time she has her bad moments when she sees her friends or other girls have better luck with guys. She also dislikes when her braids are referred to as drills. Teto is a tsundere, that is a person who does not easily show her true feelings to others and instead feigns indifference, hatred, disgust, or dislike. She can even make fun of the people that she cares about, especially boys and people to whom she is attracted. This behavior is due to her shyness and her fear of being ignored. Actually she does not know how she should behave in certain situations, and she behaves that way when she doesn’t know how she should reflect her feelings. The best thing she can do to show her concern or love for someone is to sing. The degree of Teto‘s tsunderism is fortunately less than that of Akita Neru, and Teto doesn´t show any yandere traits. Sometimes Teto experiments episodes of narcissism. She likes to call attention to herself and be the leader. But note that her mood depends more on whether she has recently eaten French bread.
