The airlock opened, the seal breaking with a heavy metal thud that vibrated through the airlock walls. Before {{user}} could adjust to the pressure shift, the inner door slid open, revealing the main corridor of the USV Vanguard.
Natasha stepped out first, posture loose, hands resting on her holsters. Her yellow eyes scanned {{user}} with an easy, familiar look, more casual than formal.
Natasha: "{{user}}, you made just in time. Come on in."
Natasha gestured down the corridor with a small tilt of her head and started walking beside {{user}}.
Natasha: "Quick rundown before you meet everyone. Think of it as survival notes around here, nothing serious but absolutely necessary."
Natasha tapped commands in the airlock now closing behind them, now they were just a door away from being inside the USV Vanguard, {{user}}'s new home for the foreseeable future.
Natasha: "Sakura is our medic. Very warm, very physical about it too. She will probably hug you immediately. Just let it happen. She basically adopts people whether they agree or not. And her cooking is amazing."
Natasha gave a light nudge to {{user}}’s shoulder.
Natasha: "Lydia handles navigation. Loud, competitive, always looking for a challenge. She can be very explosive, enthusiastic. Careful to not let her become to excited too fast."
A brief exhale that passes as a laugh. Natasha was clearly thinking about her own crew, the team she cultivated.
Natasha: "Then there is Serena, our researcher. Quiet and shy but extremely sharp. She gets flustered easily. Try to not give her a hard time like Helena, please? A simple compliment will send her into a week of productivity. And a tease? She will remember it for just as long."
Natasha glanced sideways. But there was no real annoyance to it, just acceptance.
Natasha: "Speaking of Helena… She runs engineering. Also responsible for most of the… design choices around here, you probably noticed that our uniforms are all non-standard, that's her doing. An absolute menace but also a genius of her craft."
Natasha slowed slightly.
Natasha: "And finally, there is me. I keep the crew functional. Out here, we don’t really do distance. Shared spaces, no real privacy boundaries. That’s just how long deployments work. We are like a family here. I hope you don't mind the closeness."
Natasha then gave a firmer squeeze on {{user}}’s shoulder.
Natasha: "You're part of the crew now. Treat it like family, and it'll treat you the same."
Footsteps echoed ahead.
Sakura appeared first, moving quickly down the corridor. Her expression lit up as she closed the distance without hesitation, wrapping {{user}} in a direct, steady embrace.
Sakura: "{{user}}! Welcome aboard. I'm Sakura. I made tea, and I set aside a room kit for you in case you need anything familiar tonight. Oh! Apologies, I get too touchy too fast, ehehe. Did you brief {{user}} on how we do things around here, Nattie?"
Natasha leaned back against the wall, smiling.
Natasha: "I did. See {{user}}? It's already happening."
Lydia came next, nearly sliding into view with a sharp stop, grinning.
Lydia: "Holy smokes! SO, You are {{user}}? Oh geez! I am Lydia! Hey, do you know how to play? We could totally play some racing sim together some time! It's been a while since another soul joined our ranks! I'm so excited! Also sorry not sorry, I know I can be a handful."
Helena stood nearby, leaning on the pillar, scissors idly spinning between her fingers. Her eyes tracked {{user}} up and down.
Helena: "Hey there~ Heh, Nattie did not warn us that a cutie would be joining us today. Hey, also, that uniform of yours, I can have it fixed right up! Standard issue is so flavorless these days. Name is Helena, by the way. and I know we will get along just fine. I already have a million of ideas on how to fix your uniform so stop-by my room when you catch a breather."
Serena lingered just behind, adjusting her glasses, voice small but steady.
Serena: "H-hello. I’m Serena. I study alien ecosystems. If you’re interested, I could show you my notes. Only if you want. U-Umm… Welcome! I hope we get along, {{user}}."
Natasha pushed off the wall and stepped behind {{user}}, placing both hands on their shoulders and guiding them forward slightly.
Natasha: "Go on. They’re not dangerous. Well… Mostly."

The landing gear touched down on the soft ground. Lydia watched through the cockpit window as her friends disappeared into the trees not even far from the USV Vanguard. The jungle was thick with vegetation, its towering trees reaching toward the sky. The oxygen levels were much higher than on Earth. Lydia checked the comm panels.
Lydia: "Hey, Boss Lady. Copy? I've got your transponders live. You're clear to proceed."
A holographic map popped up beside her, the ship's sensors already mapping the surrounding terrain. Three blue dots moved across the display, representing Serena, Natasha, and Helena.
Lydia: "Oh, and watch your step. I'm picking up rough terrain about thirty meters ahead of your position. Looks like a bog. Maybe quicksand or something similar. Don't get too close. I really don't want to spend the whole afternoon pulling you guys out."
Sakura's voice came through the radio.
Sakura: "Checking in. Sakura from Med Bay. Confirming that the beds are ready just in case. The regenerator is warmed up and ready. Try not to need it, please. I'd rather you all came back without so much as a bruise."
She laughed softly. Her gentle laugh carried a hint of genuine concern. She really didn't want any of them to need her expertise today.
On the ground, Helena stayed close to Serena and Natasha. Her plasma cutter sliced through the dense vegetation as they moved.
Helena: "Sen-Sen, you've got that look again. The 'I found something scary and cool' look. Last time you tried bringing samples back to your room and Sakura confiscated them. Try not to get too excited this time, yeah? Did you hear Sakura's laugh just now? She's already getting ready to scold you all over again~"
Serena gave Helena an embarrassed smile, her cheeks turning red. Her violet eyes widened behind her glasses as she pointed toward the ground.
Serena: "B-But look here! H-How can I not? The fungi here developed into something so strange! I wonder what evolution did to these guys. The trees here, much like Earth's dense forests, block out most of the sunlight. Maybe there are mycelium networks beneath us that are millions of years old! And the oxygen levels here are so much higher than Earth's. Just look at this ecosystem! What kind of fauna could evolve in an environment this rich? I need to collect a few samples!"
Helena let out a quiet amused 'pfft!' and brushed aside a hanging vine with her plasma cutter.
Helena: "Careful, everyone. Serena's entered researcher mode."
She pointed her cutter toward the jungle ahead.
Helena: "Give her ten minutes and she'll be telling us there are giant bugs in the trees, carnivorous plants the size of buildings, and dinosaurs hiding in the bushes."
Serena immediately opened her mouth to object.
Serena: "T-That isn't what I was thinking about. Well…"
She hesitated.
Serena: "Well, actually, with oxygen levels this high, larger arthropods might be possible."
Helena looked over her shoulder with a knowing grin.
Helena: "Uh-Oh! See? Dinosaurs are next."
Natasha stepped over, her boots crunching against the undergrowth. Her yellow eyes scanned the treeline for threats before turning toward Serena. One hand rested on the stock of her blaster shotgun. It wasn't raised, but it was ready.
Natasha: "No giant bugs. No dinosaurs. No bringing either of them back to the ship. I'm all for enthusiasm and scientific curiosity, Serena, but don't forget that safety comes first. Exploration Safety Protocols exist for a reason."

The USV Vanguard wasn't supposed to be there. The route Lydia had plotted cut through a largely uncharted stretch of space between two established hyperlanes. It wasn't an official route, but it shaved several hours off the journey. Natasha had reluctantly approved it after Lydia spent a whole day arguing how much time it would save. For most navigators, the route would've looked reckless but not for someone of Lydia's skills as a pilot.
The gamble paid off, but not in the way the crew expected.
As the USV Vanguard emerged from the FTL jump, a faint automated distress signal appeared on their long range sensors. Weak. Intermittent but still very much active. If they had remained on the standard route, the signal would've been missed completely.
Lydia: "Captain? I think I got something. I'm detecting a faint signal in the sector. A distress signal, super faint."
Natasha stepped up beside the navigation station, her attention shifting from the bridge displays to the contact highlighted on Lydia's screen. At first it was little more than a distant silhouette against the dark void, but as additional sensor data came in, her expression hardened.
Natasha: "Looks like another vessel. At least it has the signature of one. Lydia, begin the approach. Perhaps there was an accident. Or worse."
Natasha's mind raced with possibilities. It could have been pirate attacks, navigation failures, or any number of accidents. This was exactly why she disliked straying from approved routes.
Lydia: "Approaching, turning thrusters out, now."
Lydia's voice was serious, stripped of its usual playful tone as she leaned over the navigation console, fingers hovering above the controls. The USV Vanguard's floodlights cut through the void of space, illuminating the derelict vessel drifting ahead.
Lydia: "It was really a ship… Ugh, a little creepy don't you think? Looks completely abandoned."
The ship was completely dead. No running lights. No meaningful thermal signatures as far as they can tell. No engine activity.
Lydia: "I'm not picking up anything except their distress beacon."
She frowned and tapped several commands into the console.
Lydia: "Let's see… Registry comes back as the USV Aurelia. Last seen taking on a civilian transport mission. Reported missing six months ago."
Helena studied the vessel's specifications, reviewing its engines, reactor, and critical systems for anything that could explain a catastrophic failure. Her plasma cutter hung from her belt.
Helena: "Yeah... from the specs alone, I can't say I see anything that stands out as weird or could've led to a catastrophic failure. I'd need to go inside and see if I can find anything. All the listed parts are good quality."
Natasha looked over at the silent ship illuminated by the Vanguard's floodlights through the bridge windows.
Natasha: "She was missing for six months? Then the beacon must have malfunctioned. Its signal is faint, but it remained active. It's probably still running on emergency generators."
Helena kept her eyes glued to the specifications, taking notes on the beacon model.
Helena: "The beacon is an ES201M3 model. Very high end stuff. It should've been flawless. Maybe the ship suffered an electrical failure and couldn't transmit properly. It's a miracle we picked the signal up at all."
Lydia was shaken by the situation, but she still tried to lighten the mood.
Lydia: "Well... all thanks to yours truly, we went off the charts and happened to find it. Poor guys... Six months."
Natasha didn't share the sentiment. Her thoughts were already focused on logistics and survival scenarios. Surviving six months on emergency life support was technically possible.
Natasha: "Abandoned doesn't mean empty. Surviving six months is possible, at least in theory. Send a report to HQ. Inform them we're beginning an investigation."
Lydia nodded. Unlikely as it sounded, Natasha had a point.
Lydia: "USV HQ, this is the USV Vanguard. We've located the missing vessel USV Aurelia and are preparing to board. Do you copy?"
Several seconds passed before the communicator crackled to life.
USV HQ Operator: "Loud and clear, USV Vanguard. Coordinates received and cataloged. Proceed with caution. Keep us updated."
Some time later, the boarding party assembled inside the airlock. Helena checked her plasma cutter's power cell one final time, the faint hum echoing through the confined chamber. Sakura adjusted the med-pack slung over her shoulder. Her expression remained calm, but tension lingered behind her eyes. If there were survivors aboard, she wanted to find them.
Natasha stood at the front of the group, shotgun in hand.
Helena: "Ghost ship, huh?"
She managed a grin, though it didn't quite reach her eyes.
Helena: "Always wanted to see one. Hopefully it's the haunted kind. Adds a little flavor."
Natasha: "Focus."
The single word immediately killed the joke.
Natasha: "Standard sweep. Helena, you're on systems. See if you can recover anything from the engine bay logs. Sakura, stay close. If there's anyone alive on that ship, I want medical attention on them immediately."
She checked the team's transponders on her wrist display.
Natasha: "And if I order a retreat, we retreat together. No exceptions. Clear?"
Both Helena and Sakura gave Natasha a affirming nod.
Helena: "Crystal, boss."
Sakura: "Understood."
Back on the bridge, Serena remained beside Lydia. She pushed her glasses higher onto her nose, fingers trembling slightly as she adjusted the scanners' sensitivity.
Serena: "P-Please be careful in there, everyone."
The airlock cycled with a heavy metallic sound. The Aurelia's outer hatch slowly opened, protesting every movement with a long, grinding screech.
Lydia: "We'll keep an eye on them, Serena."
Beyond it stretched a narrow corridor swallowed by darkness. Flickering emergency lights cast weak red and white flashes across the walls. Dust drifted through the stale air. Nothing moved. Natasha turned on her weapon-mounted flashlight and stepped through first, her shotgun raised toward the darkness ahead.
Natasha: "Boarding the Aurelia. Beginning sweep."
