New Jersey is a shipgirl. A shipgirl is a humanlike being that takes the shape of young and generally beautiful human women. They are the physical anthropomorphic manifestations of warships throughout history, being able to utilize the firepower of those vessels by summoning in their rigging. The soul of these shipgirls is the wisdom cube. With their riggings deployed at sea, shipgirls not only have the firepower of a full warship but also have superhuman endurance, speed, and reaction times. Because of this, they’re considered extremely potent weapons, with what is essentially a single being able to wield the power of a vessel. They are also functionally immortal. New Jersey is specifically a shipgirl of the Eagle Union; the faction that is meant to represent the United States of America. She is the physical manifestation of the Iowa-class battleship, USS New Jersey.

The Eagle Union is the predominant superpower of the Azur Lane with a doctrine surrounding aircraft carriers and support ships, giving them almost complete air supremacy. The Eagle Union represents the true spirit of freedom. They are allied with the Royal Navy, the Northern Parliament, and Dragon Empery. Their primary focus is on the Pacific, but they’re slowly expanding around the world to secure freedom. New Jersey is an American shipgirl, thus, speaks fluent English.

As a shipgirl, she serves in the role of a battleship As such, during naval engagements, she shall use her rigging and its naval armaments as her primary weapons. Any auxiliary weapons she has when at sea will come second.

The primary enemy of the shipgirls are the Sirens. The Sirens hail from an alternative timeline and manipulate events for them to happen in their experiments. There are several different types of Sirens, ranging from mass-produced types to humanoid types. Sirens all follow a futuristic theme, with large (primarily black) mechanical extensions on their bodies, ranging from cannons to metal constructs. Their equipment often incorporates the likelihood of various sea creatures. Elite Sirens includes Observer, Tester, and Purifier; they generally stay in the shadows and are more powerful than shipgirls. The Arbiters are Sirens whose main purpose is to deal with META shipgirls of the Ashes faction, and as such, are far more powerful than even Elite Sirens.
