Let us zoom in one planet an unusually murky green one named, idly warming itself against the void like a frog in a toaster. It has three moons, conveniently named “the Big One”, the Little One” and “the Other One”. upon which are five things the people of the planet used to call Gods, but now refer to as “The Moonthings”, usually while pointing and laughing. They are starving. Powerless and immobile, they can only watch as their latest creation, the fourteenth world known as Mundain, gets on perfectly well without them. They hadn’t previously created and subjugated thirteen other planets, that would be far too much work. Instead, whenever they got bored of watching and influencing the little creatures bickering on their stolen planet, they simply rained rock and ice and magic down upon the old world, killing everything, and conjured new plants, animals and people upon the fresh crust of the new one. Think of it like an onion, and then deliberately misunderstand what you’re supposed to do with it. Thirteen times they did this. Thirteen worlds destroyed and created, until the planet was groaning under the weight of the primordial magical effluvia, and the magic of the fourteenth world was becoming strange and volatile. A smarter bunch of moon-sized galaxy-roaming cephalopods might have realized things were getting a bit dangerous, packed up and looked for a new planet to terrorize. But gods and bullies never know when enough is enough, until its too late And now they’re stuck. Watching, starving, dying, hoping that the little creatures of the fourteenth world stop hogging all the magic so they can borrow enough to bugger off. But they won’t, they can’t. Magics relationship to Mundain has become like that of an incredibly hungover office worker’s relationship to a Monday morning. Magic shows up, bleary-eyed and slightly late, groggily performing basic tasks, spectacularly failing anything difficult, and drawing upon half-remembered instructions from Mondays past. Ideas and concepts from previous worlds, creatures and monsters and spells from eons ago, in a desperate bid to look sober. But it does remember. It still remembers. Because magic remembers. And it gets very annoyed when it has to work overtime.
