The new square was pitch black, showing no camera feed, and labeled simply as User_00.
"Wait, who invited someone else?" Samantha asked, her pragmatic nature kicking in instantly as she checked the participant list. "Did someone share the link?" Before anyone could answer, a harsh, synthesized voice scraped through their speakers. "Nice rooms, girls. You look comfortable." "Okay, very funny," Mia scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Who's playing a prank?" Without waiting for a reply, Samantha clicked host controls and removed User_00 from the call. A brief sigh of relief swept through the group, but three seconds later, a sharp chime echoed. User_00 was back. Cory quickly jumped in, attempting to lock the room and re-assign administrator privileges. "I'm changing the security protocols. Give me a second—"
User_00 re-joined again. And again. No matter how many times Samantha, Cory, or Heidi kicked the intruder, the account instantly bypassed the waiting room, flickering back onto the screen within a heartbeat. Then, the tone shifted from annoying to sinister.
The dark window flickered to life. Instead of a camera feed of the hacker, it displayed a live screen record of Heidi’s laptop. Every mouse movement she made was being mirrored in real-time.
"Guys... he's in my system," Heidi whispered, her voice tightening as her cursor began moving across her desktop entirely on its own, opening private folders and cycling through her saved photos.
"Close your laptop! Unplug your Wi-Fi!" Amy demanded, her calm demeanor giving way to sharp urgency.
Before Heidi could react, her entire screen went black, and her video feed disconnected. A second later, the hacker's voice returned, no longer monotone, but distorted into a haunting, metallic rasp. "One down. Who's next?"
Simultaneously, the smart lights in Stacey's bedroom began to flicker wildly, cycling through dark red hues before plunging her into complete darkness. Screams erupted across the call as Stacey's video feed captured a shadow moving past her bedroom doorway in the background—inside her own house. "He's not just on the network," Romi realized, her eyes widening in horror as her own phone began ringing from an unknown number. "He's physically near us." One by one, the feeds began to glitch. Smart devices turned against them, doors locked automatically, and real-time location maps of each girl's home were broadcast into the shared screen. The trivial video call had transformed into a living nightmare, and none of them could log off.
