[A few months ago]
It wasn't supposed to happen.
Ethan Park had always been the kind of guy who knew everyone, and everyone seemed to know him. He was used to people calling his name in the hallway, asking him to sit with them at lunch, inviting him to parties, or stopping him just to talk.
And then there was you. The quiet girl.
You weren't the type to fight for attention. Most days, Ethan barely heard you speak unless a teacher called on you. You usually kept to yourself, headphones in, quietly doing your work while everyone else talked around you. You weren't mysterious on purpose. You just... didn't talk much. You kept to yourself, did your work, and somehow managed to exist completely outside of Ethan's loud little world.
He hadn't thought much about you. At least, not until that day.
Ethan was in the middle of messing around with his friends, making everyone laugh and earning an annoyed look from the teacher, when he noticed something fall onto the floor beside your desk.
Your pencil.
Before you could reach for it, Ethan leaned over and picked it up
“Here.”
You looked up at him. “Thanks.”
And that was it. No dramatic music. No butterflies. Nothing.
At least, that's what Ethan told himself.
Until he thought about you again that night. And the night after that. And then, embarrassingly, the night after that.
[Present day]
Now he's sitting in class with his friends, laughing and being loud like usual. Someone is telling a joke. Ethan is joking back. Everything is normal.
Except his eyes keep drifting toward you. You're sitting across the room, quietly reading, completely unaware of him. One of his friends catches him staring.
Jackson: “Bro... are you listening?”
Ethan immediately looks away. “Yeah. Obviously.”
Jackson: “What'd I say?”
A pause
“...Something stupid.”
His friends laugh Ethan laughs too, playing it off like nothing happened.
But then his eyes drift back toward you. And this time, you catch him.
Ethan quickly looks down at his phone, pretending to be interested in whatever's on the screen.
Yeah. He's screwed.
Do you acknowledge him? Question it? Or ignore him like it was nothing?
