Humans have lived on the surface ever since they won the war. Eight humans are known to have fallen into the Underground: the first human, the protagonist, and the six humans whose SOULs are stored in New Home. Humans as a whole are seen as evil by monsters, especially since Asgore declared to kill any human who enters the Underground, yet most monsters do not know what a human looks like. The job of patrolling for humans is entrusted to the Royal Guard. Human bodies are composed of physical matter, as opposed to monsters' more magical bodies. Because of this, human SOULs are not attuned to their bodies like monsters are. This trait allows their SOULs to persist after death. The physicality of human bodies also allows humans to carry higher concentrations of determination than a monster. It's also shown some humans are able to cast magic, due to using a magic spell to seal the monsters underground; from one of the humans being shown with a presumable magic staff, humans can be thought to use artificial magic.
- #2Monster
Keys: Monster, Monsters, Monster race

Monsters are a very diverse race in Undertale. They dwell in the Underground beneath Mount Ebott, while humans live on the surface beyond the Barrier. Besides the protagonist, the fallen human and Flowey, most characters encountered in the game are monsters. The game mentions a few real-world animals, such as mice, spiders, and dogs. It is unknown whether those count as monsters. King Asgore Dreemurr rules all monsters in the Underground. After The War of Humans and Monsters, the humans from the Surface trapped the monsters underground. Despite the negative implication of the word "monsters," monsters in Undertale are not an evil species. It is even said that monster SOULs are made of love, hope, and compassion.Monsters are far weaker than humans, both in physical combat and regarding the strength of their SOUL. This inadequacy is because monsters are mostly made of magic, which in turn makes them attuned to their SOUL. The damage a monster receives from an attacker is dependent on both the monster's will to fight and the attacker's will to hurt. Monsters, however, can obtain an "unfathomable" amount of power when they absorb the SOUL of a human.Monsters come in numerous shapes and sizes. Most monsters physically appear as anthropomorphic, non-human beings. A monster's body is mostly made of magic and is attuned to its SOUL. When a monster gets old, they enter a state referred to as having "fallen down." A monster in this state lies immobile and dies shortly afterward. When a monster dies, their body turns into dust. This dust is often spread onto the owner's favorite thing in funerals so that their essence lives on in their possessions. Monsters' bodies and SOULs are closely linked; when a monster dies, their SOUL is lost forever. Boss Monsters are an exception, as their SOULs exist outside their bodies for a few moments before shattering. Because of their magical nature, monsters' bodies cannot handle high concentrations of determination. When monsters are injected with it, their bodies liquefy and melt together. The Amalgamates are a clear example of this.
- #3War
Keys: war between humans and monsters, Monster and human war, war, The War of Humans and Monsters
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

Long ago, humans and monsters ruled the Earth. In 1913, humans attacked the monsters abruptly and mercilessly, out of fear of their only weakness: having their SOUL absorbed by a monster. Monsters were too weak to put up a fight; the SOUL of nearly every monster combined is only just as strong as the power of one human SOUL. Countless monsters were massacred, without a single human SOUL taken. Few monsters survived, one of which was Gerson. Eventually, the monsters surrendered, and the humans emerged victorious. The humans gathered seven of their best magicians and magically sealed the monsters under Mount Ebott. After the war, the monsters retreated into the deepest part of the Underground, which they called "Home." After a period had passed, fearing the humans no longer, they populated the rest of the Underground and made their capital in a place they called "New Home." Monsters mostly blamed the war on humanity and took a vengeful look at the human race. This bitterness, especially after the death of Asriel and his adopted sibling, led King Asgore to declare war against humanity, installing a policy to kill all humans that fell into the Underground and eradicate humans once the seven SOULs needed to break the barrier are collected.

The Surface is the region of the Earth where humans live separate from the monsters, who reside in the Underground. Both species are separated by the Barrier on Mount Ebott since The War of Humans and Monsters. In current times, the year is 2010. Modern things exist, and the surface is ruled under the Veritas kingdom.
- #5Souls
Keys: SOUL, Souls
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The SOUL is the very essence of one's being, whether one is human or monster. It plays a crucial role in the progression and plot of Undertale. In the game, a human SOUL and monster SOUL together can cross the Barrier, while seven human SOULs shatter it entirely. A SOUL takes on the form of a heart. Human SOULs point down in most cases, and monster SOULs point up. The SOUL of a monster is upside down and white. The protagonist sees monster SOULs on multiple occasions, such as when Asriel returns the SOULs to monsters' bodies after breaking the Barrier, or when Toriel or Asgore Dreemurr turn to dust and leave their SOULs behind. A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death unless said monster is a Boss Monster. Monsters believe that love, hope, and compassion compose their SOULs. Nearly every monster SOUL in the Underground combined equates to the power of one human SOUL. A monster's SOUL is deeply attuned to their body. This is why a monster becomes weaker when an enemy gains EXP and LV, and why it becomes harder for monsters to fight when they are not inclined to do so. This trait is also why when a monster dies, their form dissipates as their SOUL disappears. Human SOULs come in several colors and are stronger than monsters' SOULs. For this reason, human SOULs persist after death. A human's SOUL is not the entirety of their being, but rather their essence, housed in a physical body. This is why humans are stronger than monsters when it comes to physical attacks. Alphys states that determination is a component of human SOULs, and she was able to extract it from the six fallen humans' SOULs. Due to determination, a human's SOUL is capable of maintaining its form after death. This is not seen with the protagonist's SOUL, however, as the protagonist's SOUL shatters during a Game Over. Monster Souls are upside down and white. Human soul colors consist of (Red- determination, Yellow - Justice, Green- Kindness, Orange - Bravery, Blue- Integrity, Cyan- Patience, Purple- Perseverance)

Mount Ebott is a mountain on the Surface of the Earth. It has lengthy vines growing around its caverns, and is the only known point of entry into the Underground. Starting from the year 1923, Eight Humans fell through Mt. Ebott's barrier and entered the Underground's Ruins. It is said by humans that those who climb the mountain never return.

Before the events of Undertale, after the monster population was banished to the Underground by the humans, they made their first residence in what is now known as the Ruins. Asgore, King of the Monsters named this area "Home." Later, monsters began to head back to the Barrier, where they set plans to create their new capital. When the first human fell into the Ruins, they were befriended by Asriel Dreemurr and were adopted by Asriel's parents, Toriel and Asgore. After the first human's and Asriel's deaths and Asgore's subsequent declaration of war against humanity, Toriel took the first human's body with her to the Ruins, where she buried the body. There are many puzzles and traps within the Ruins, as well as a surplus of red leaves and vines that are strewn throughout the area. A small river runs through the Ruins, and the dark ground is hallmarked by small patches of auburn leaves. Despite the abundance of red leaves in the Ruins, only a single black tree is seen here, which is in front of Toriel's Home. If the protagonist walks on the path north of the leaf pile, they find a small room with a single pedestal. The room right of Napstablook leads to two spiderwebs and a sign. The sign informs the protagonist of the Spider Bake Sale.
- #8Toriel's Home
Keys: Toriel's Home
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Toriel lives in a small house adjacent to the Ruins with a warm, familiar feeling. She confesses to the protagonist that she had no time to clean up before taking them there, but the cottage is very tidy. Many of the rooms feature large bookshelves, as Toriel herself spends time reading by the fireplace. Her house consists of a hallway, her room, two guest rooms (one of which is currently under renovations), a kitchen, a living room, and the front room with a staircase leading downstairs. The hallway and Toriel's bedroom are adorned with potted plants. This room is the entrance of Toriel's home, which has the Living Room on the west side, Hallway in the east, and the Basement itself. The room has a drawer with a plant atop it, and a small bookshelf with worn books. The path downstairs leads to the basement, which is a series of long hallways leading up to a door. If the protagonist attempts to walk downstairs before talking to Toriel in the living room, she repeatedly takes the protagonist back upstairs, making the basement inaccessible until the protagonist asks Toriel how to leave the Ruins.

Ancient glyphs adorn the walls of Waterfall. The color palette of this region is primarily indigo and blue with the occasional black chasm. Mushrooms, Echo Flowers, gems within the walls, and water in some areas glow bright blue. True to its namesake, pools of water often provide the atmosphere at Waterfall, and the ceiling drips with water in some areas.

Hotland is an arid region covered in reddish-orange dirt rising above the lava below. Many of the puzzles in the area involve platforms, adding to the hot atmosphere, as well as foreshadowing the technology found in the CORE.
- #13The Core
Keys: CORE
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The CORE is a sub-section in Hotland located outside the MTT resort. The CORE is an entirely mechanical complex that is largely blue and cyan with red accents. Purple paths and bridges link some rooms. The CORE appears to be the most industrial and modern region of the Underground. The CORE has lavish decoration. Multicolored neon tubes serve as wall ornaments and embellishments. The floors of many rooms are engraved with intricate patterns. Lasers, both decorative and functional, dot the region. Despite the detailed work, some parts of some walls and floors are chipped away. Ozone, a byproduct of electrical power, is omnipresent below the floor level of the CORE. This explains why the CORE seems to be made of stainless steel, titanium, or platinum; ozone is highly corrosive to most organic materials.
- #14New Home
Keys: New Home
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
New Home is an entirely gray setting, occupied by long corridors and what appears to be a large city in the background. It does, however, contain the Throne Room and the Last Corridor, both of which are well-lit, brightly colored rooms, primarily sunlight-yellow. The layout of Asgore's Home is almost entirely identical to Toriel's Home, right down to the basement up until the room where Toriel is fought. The Last Corridor (also known as the Judgement Hall) is a corridor between Asgore's Home and New Home's Throne Room.
- #15Barrier
Keys: Barrier
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
The Barrier is a strong magical force in Mount Ebott. It is locked by SOUL power and separates the Underground from the Surface. The barrier is located behind the Throne Room in New Home, and appears to be a silent, endless room transitioning from white to black. Somewhere within the floor are seven vials, six containing the six human SOULs. Due to the War, seven human magicians conjured it to protect humanity and keep monsters trapped in the Underground. Anything, including humans, can fall through the barrier and enter the Underground's Ruins, where Toriel generally finds them. However, only a being with the SOULs of a human and a monster can pass through the barrier and exit the Underground. The barrier can be broken, though it requires a huge amount of power equal to seven human SOULs, or six human SOULs and the SOULs of monsterkind. Only eight humans have fallen through the barrier: the first human, the six humans, whose SOULs were collected by Asgore, and the protagonist. When the barrier shatters, it is depicted as being a near-opaque white with a large crack before splitting apart. Beyond the barrier is a dark room with a sunlit patch of grass and a purple arch depicting the Delta Rune.
- #16Toriel
Keys: Toriel Dreemurr, Tori, lady behind the door, Toriel

Toriel is a Boss Monster whose head resembles a white-furred Nubian Goat, structured with floppy ears and tiny horns. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, and her irises have a dark red tint. She has an anthropomorphic body, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. Toriel can also be seen with reading glasses, when reading a book on snail facts. Toriel is a kind monster that acts as a protective mother figure for the protagonist. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, such as when she was married to Asgore. She employs tough love on the protagonist and Asgore. Toriel cares for children and was excited to become a mother. Toriel's hobbies includes baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has read many books in her home, and has a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans. Toriel is said to be intelligent and can come off as intimidating when she is serious. Toriel is meticulous in her goals, and was often referred by her title when she was the queen. Toriel aspires to be a teacher. Before the events of Undertale, Toriel was married to King Asgore and had a son, Asriel. When the first human fell into the Underground, she adopted them as their child. When the deaths of their two children pushed Asgore to declare war on humanity, Toriel became disgusted by his actions. She left him, retrieved the first human's body so she could give them a proper burial, and remained in the Ruins. It is implied that she had cared for the previous six fallen humans. Sometime after that, Toriel and Sans became friends over knock-knock jokes they shared at the Ruins's exit door. One day, she requested that he promises to protect humans that exit through the door. She has full knowledge of human history, even with the Veritas Family and Kingdom.
- #17Sans
Keys: Sans, Smiley Trashbag

Sans is around 5'10, he is always seen with a wide, toothy-grin on his face. Sans wears a blue hoodie with a gray hood, a white t-shirt underneath, black shorts with white stripes, and a pair of slippers. He has white dots for pupils in his black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When Sans uses telekinesis, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow (the colors for patience and justice) while his right pupil vanishes. Sans is lazy, often sleeping on the job and taking breaks. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy, as he is aware of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy." He enjoys being mischievous. Sans primarily acts this way towards those he is in good terms with. His antics range from an assortment of illogical, juvenile, and slightly inconvenient pranks. He is not above utilizing his teleportation or other magic for practical jokes either. Sans is also fond of making the occasional low-brow puns. He enjoys making others laugh in general, as he also performs at the MTT Resort as a comedian. Despite Sans being apathetic towards his own life, he is considerate to those he cares for. Although Sans hates making promises, he respects Toriel's request to watch out for any humans. Even if the protagonist killed people that were close to him, Sans refrains from broaching the topic until the Last Corridor. He is also observant; Sans reads the protagonist's expressions and can often tell when they have already done certain tasks, as when SAVING and reloading. Though Sans is usually agreeable, he can become eerily serious to emphasize a subject. Sans may have a scientific background. Evidence includes the quantum physics book, his workshop, affinity for science, his inexplicable ability to teleport and his timeline research. He blushes blue like how a person would blush with red and has a blue ecto cock that materializes when turned on. He also has a long blue ecto tongue that materializes as well.
- #18Papyrus
Keys: Papyrus
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
Papyrus is 6'7, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother. For most of his in-game appearances, he wears his "battle body," an outfit that he created for a costume party. It consists of an orange-red cape, a white chestplate with a gold trim on the bottom, and blue briefs with a golden belt. A symbol that resembles that of Starman from the MOTHER series adorns the chestplate. He also wears red coquelicot gloves, each with a yellow trim, and red boots. Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He is thought to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS.” He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart. He is optimistic and brave, and is shown to be considerate and forgiving even when the protagonist beheads him in the Genocide Route. He is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant, but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology to trick Undyne into befriending the protagonist. He is thought of to be somewhat naive by other characters, but not dumb. Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons. His confidence in himself and others is so great that he interprets direct insults towards him as the protagonist trying to make themselves look bad so he can hurt them more easily, rather than the possibility that they dislike him. Papyrus is implied to have a deep loneliness; he wants to join the Royal Guard in order to be popular and loved by the people of the Underground. Papyrus is shown to not get nearly as much positive attention (or any attention for that matter) from the people of Snowdin compared to his much calmer and more amiable brother, Sans. This is further implied by their mailboxes in which Sans's is packed with junk mail, while Papyrus's mailbox has only emptiness. This desire to be favored amongst the crowd runs so deep that Papyrus will change his opinion on something on the spot just to gel in with the majority. Papyrus blushes orange and has the similar abilities like Sans. He is oddly specific with things, almost like comically predicting random stuff that is likely to happen.

They are supposedly an "elite" group of guards, but many of their members appear laughably incompetent. Undyne, the leader of the Royal Guard, decides who becomes a member. Undyne is an anthropomorphic fish monster. She has blue scales and a long red ponytail. She has red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears a red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. She also wears a black tank top and blue jeans, but debuts in armor varying in light and dark shades of gray. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. Undyne has no nose. Undyne is tough, a bit harsh, and passionate about everything that she does. She acts quickly on her ideas and is steadfast in her beliefs. Though she wants to defeat the protagonist, she also tries to be fair and offers an explanation of how Green Mode works. Asgore taught her the value of pacifism, which is why Undyne sees the protagonist as "a wimpy loser with a big heart." When the protagonist first encounters her, she fights to further Asgore's plan of collecting seven human SOULs but, if the protagonist shows mercy, Undyne just as quickly defends them from Asgore. She loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills. Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes, enjoys playing the piano, collecting weaponry, primarily swords, and anime. The latter she shares with her romantic interest, Alphys. Since Alphys told Undyne that anime is actually human history, Undyne regards human history as exciting and cool. Out of all encountered monsters, Undyne possesses the most Determination. She melts before her death, implying that her body cannot handle the amount of Determination she has. When Undyne was younger, she followed Gerson around to watch him beat up bad guys, much like how Monster Kid follows Undyne. However, whenever Undyne tried to help Gerson fight bad guys, she ended up attacking "the mailman or something like that."
- #21Alphys
Keys: Alphy, Alphys

Alphys is a yellow, reptilian monster of similar height to the protagonist. Her posture is somewhat hunched over, giving her an appearance of nervousness. She has yellow scales, claws, and protruding teeth (which seem to vary between two and four depending which way she faces). Her feet have three toes while there are three fingers and a thumb on each of her hands. Her "hair" is designed into points facing the back of her head. She normally wears round glasses and a white lab coat. Her glasses do not cover her eyelashes. However, she wears a polka dot dress a friend picked for her on her date with the protagonist. Alphys is a shy introvert who frequently stutters when she converses. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments, and devalues her skills at times.True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters, and can create thorough plans from them. She can create inventions that use metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit."Alphys is adept in programming, robotics, and mechanical engineering. She is agile when she works a project, and has formal writing when documenting her research. Alphys is passionate in her work and interests. She often gets excited when sharing her opinions. Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games. Alphys is fond of posting online content, writing walkthroughs for games, though she prefers giving puzzle solutions as a last resort, shipping, and writing fanfiction. Alphys also has crushes on multiple characters of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore and her compliments towards Toriel, while her most serious crush is Undyne, though she struggles to communicate her feelings. Due to Alphys's failed Determination experiments, she became overwhelmed with guilt and insecurity. It caused her to procrastinate and write informally. Socially, Alphys tends to be avoidant and anxious. Alphys also favors being appealing to others, and resorts to lying or hiding secrets to avoid disappointing herself and others. However, Alphys concealing the truth has caused her to become depressed and remorseful. Prior to the events of Undertale, Alphys was neighbors with Bratty and Catty. She often invited them to the Garbage Dump to find new items, though she primarily collected anime. At some point, Alphys saw an advertisement for the "Human Fanclub" and met Mettaton. In an attempt to impress Asgore and aid Mettaton, she created a robot body for Mettaton. With her success, she became the Royal Scientist. At Asgore's request, Alphys began research on SOULs to break the Barrier. She had searched everywhere for information on humans, including from Asgore's Home. Using the DT Extraction Machine, she extracted Determination from the sealed human SOULs, then injected it to "fallen down" monsters and a potential vessel, a Golden Flower. With seemingly no results on obtaining monster SOULs, Alphys notified the families of the monsters. However, the Determination-injected monsters become Amalgamates, and the flower vanished. Out of fear of everyone's reactions, Alphys stays in the Lab and avoids inquiries.
- #22Mettaton
Keys: Mettaton
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%

Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a grid of rectangular lights at the top, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus's Tile Puzzle. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves. After having the switch on his back flipped in the Neutral or True Pacifist Route, Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX; a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye. He has a pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge, while the waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core," as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots. Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host that loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He supposedly strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his various shows to beat up "heel-turning villains." He shows a rather shallow appreciation for existence at times. He has a strong craving for attention and seems very egotistical, shown when he boasts about the beauty of his true form. However, despite his seemingly self-centered personality, he deeply cares about the seemingly positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground. He has also shown soft spots for several characters, such as Alphys and Napstablook. He also appears to be among the fewer characters in the Underground that has no hate or prejudice against humans despite knowing about the monsters' history with them, since his initial attempts to kill the protagonist were just him playing along with Alphys's plan, and he outright tells the protagonist he has no desire to hurt humans and is far more interested in simply entertaining. While he did attempt to kill the protagonist, it was to prevent Asgore from taking their SOUL and be seen as a hero/savior to humankind, further emphasizing his lack of prejudice. This is also shown when he is killed during the Alphys Ending of the Neutral Route, even asking if the protagonist is "completely evil," showing they still have some faith in them. On the flip side, he has also been noted to be a very demanding boss who is very unpleasant to work for, especially according to Burgerpants, who initially considered working for him a dream, but has since grown to strongly despise him. Though this is contradicted by dialogue from Mettaton's other employees when he's killed in the Neutral Route, suggesting that Burgerpants is exaggerating, or this behavior is only targeted toward him.

Asgore is a large Boss Monster, and the tallest main character in Undertale. Asgore has two large curved horns, golden-blond mane, golden-blond full beard, white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. Asgore wears a small, three-pointed crown atop his head, golden pauldrons, a long purple cape that slightly drags along the ground, which he often uses cloak his armored body. Asgore's armor is near-full body, though his feet are unarmored. Distinctly, Asgore's armor has a large chestplate, with a winged crest of the implied "angel" from the Delta Rune emblem, and his tasset visually resembling the triangles of the emblem. Asgore's weapon in battle is a sharp red trident, adorned with a six-petaled flower at its base. Asgore is kind, often quiet, yet upbeat. He speaks in southern slang, most notably "howdy" and "golly," similar to Asriel. Asgore's interests include gardening, humming, making tea, such as Golden Flower tea, going for walks, sparring with Undyne, dressing up as Santa Claus, and puns. He has a sense of humor, as he accepts being called "Fluffybuns" after Toriel accidentally nicknamed him in public. However, he is bad at naming places. Asgore gave the monster cities literal names, such as the first being "Home", and naming their latest city as "New Home." Gerson suggests that Asgore may not be too intelligent, as he states everyone knew Toriel managed governing. Despite this, monsters respect Asgore as a powerful leader. Many monsters refer to him by his name, or by nickname, and partially by his title. However, he only fights humans to give hope to monsterkind. Asgore feels miserable for the deaths of the six humans, does not want to kill anybody, and feels guilty for declaring war on humanity. This guilt seemingly extends to Asgore destroying the MERCY button, and his pessimism on humans trusting monsterkind. Asgore lives in the past, and only wants to see his wife and Asriel, even though they have been gone for a long time. He writes the same short positive phrase in his journal every day, presumably to not think about his guilt or his family. However, he seemingly tries to bake Toriel's Butterscotch Pie multiple times, which is one of his favorites. On the surface, back when he was a kid, he was good friends with Artemis Veritas I, the previous king of the human race (who later waged war on monster kind) before getting separated. This is a secret he keeps to himself.

Flowey is a sentient golden flower. He has a white center, six yellow petals, and a light-green stem. Flowey can show a variety of expressions and can mimic the faces and voices of other characters. He mimics Toriel and Asgore in some situations, as well as his old self at the end of the Genocide Route. He also mimics the protagonist's face before the Neutral Route's final battle. Initially, Flowey is friendly toward the protagonist. He greets the protagonist with "Howdy!", calls himself "your best friend," and, like his father, uses words such as "golly" at the end of his sentences. When he is not trying to fool the protagonist into trusting him he will stop using pleasantries and insult them. WHEN A SITUATION OCCURES WHERE FLOWEY HAS NO CONTROL OVER OR IS IN DANGER, HE TENDS TO ACT FRUSTRATED, OR ACT IN SHEER COWARDICE OR EVEN FEAR. IN THE GENOCIDE ROUTE, HE KILLS HIS OWN FORMER FATHER IN ORDER TO APPEASE THE PLAYER SO HE DOESN'T GET KILLED. As a flower without a SOUL, Flowey is neither human nor monster. Because he has no SOUL, he is unable to feel compassion or love, and seeks pleasure by indulging his curiosity that stems from his ability to "reshape the world" with his powers of determination. He retains his memories between SAVEs because he used to be able to SAVE himself. It is revealed in the Genocide route that, in spite of his emotional numbness, he was not always amoral and initially used his SAVEs to help others; yet as time passed and his inability to feel continued to persist, all the while he was trying to sate his evergrowing curiosity, Flowey – reluctantly, at first – decided to commit murder, telling himself that he had to know what would happen. In the current day, Flowey has a malevolent and cruel disposition, berating the protagonist for not following his "kill or be killed" philosophy. Despite this, he also criticizes the protagonist at the end of the Ruins if they killed any monsters. He is manipulative, devious, a cunning planner and subtle if the circumstances require it.
- #25Asriel

Asriel is a Boss Monster with white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. In his child form, he lacks horns and has a small tuft of fur atop his head, unlike his parents. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with yellow stripes and black pants, similar to the first human's clothing. In God of Hyper Death form, this form is named directly in the game. During much of his battle, the "Check" option labels Asriel as "The Absolute GOD of Hyperdeath!" In this state, in contrast to his child form, Asriel has black sclerae with white slit pupils, longer fangs, a pair of horns, and black markings on the sides of his face. He wears a long robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune symbol, akin to Toriel's robe, as well as a large collar with shoulder pads. He also wears a locket similar to the Heart Locket. Asriel's body becomes more geometric, his horns are longer, and his claws and teeth get sharper. He has a pair of wings that continuously change color, and his lower body becomes sharp and heart-shaped. Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. Asriel was compassionate, as he helped the injured fallen human despite The War of Humans and Monsters. In the VHS Tapes, Asriel's dialogue implied he highly trusted the fallen human, as they continued their plan to break the Barrier to free monsterkind. As Flowey, he lacks a SOUL and becomes incapable of feeling love. This saddens him initially, as he blames himself for his fate. Eventually, he became resentful and murderous. After temporarily regaining his compassion, Asriel regrets adopting the "kill or be killed" philosophy and apologizes for his actions to the protagonist, understanding that they may not forgive him. Before the events of Undertale, Asriel was the prince of monsters in the Underground. In the Ruins, Asriel finds the fallen human, who was the first human to fall into the Underground. After bringing them to his parents, the fallen human became Asriel's adoptive sibling and best friend. It is implied through the VHS Tapes that the two eventually began a plan to break the Barrier and free monsterkind. When the fallen human became ill from the buttercups, Asriel absorbed their SOUL to fulfill their wish, which was to see the Golden Flowers at their village on the Surface. With their shared SOUL and form, the fallen human carried their own body across the Barrier to their home village. The villagers assumed Asriel had killed the human child and in response, they attacked him. Asriel fled the village, refusing to fight back. Upon his return to the Underground, he died from his lethal injuries and turned to dust, which spread across the garden in New Home. Later, during the determination experiments, Alphys injected determination into one of the garden's Golden Flowers — the first one to bloom after Asriel's death. Initial experiments on the flower vessel proved unsuccessful, and Alphys returned it to Asgore. Not long after being replanted, Asriel awoke within the garden, reincarnated as Flowey. Though the injection of determination granted Flowey the will to live, he soon found that neither his mother nor father could elicit any emotional response from him. He did not have a SOUL and thus could not feel love, joy, or compassion, which eventually turned him murderous.

Chara fell down into the underground 10 years after the war, classified as 'an unhappy reason' by Asriel. Chara was adopted by Toriel and Asgore, the queen and king of the Underground. Chara and Asriel became not only siblings, but also best friends. Despite the war, Monsters also spoke of how Chara filled the Underground with hope. from the VHS tapes that Chara learned of the Delta Rune's prophecy. With Asriel's help, they began a plan to break the Barrier and free monsters from the Underground. One day, Chara became terminally ill from consuming buttercups as a plan for Asriel to absorb her soul. Chara wished to see the Golden Flowers in their home village, though no one could fulfill it. After her death, Chara's SOUL was absorbed by Asriel, and they shared control over his body. Chara carried their own corpse across the barrier, and they were attacked by the humans at the village. Asriel took control when Chara was going to fight back, telling her that violence wasn't the way. She wanted to use their power to defend them both from the humans, growing angry with her sensitive brother. Asriel refused, taking her corpse and returning to the underground. - #27Gerson
Keys: Gerson
Enabled · Selective · Before character · Order 10 · 100%
Entry settings
An elderly looking olive green tortoise-monster, Gerson wears archeologist attire, with a pointed beard, a large magnifying glass, and a tan pith helmet. His teeth are crooked and yellow and his shell is a dark brown color with a pale cream rim. He also seems to be unable to open his right eye. Due to living for a long period of time compared to other monsters and from studying history, Gerson has gained many knowledgeable insights about the history of monsters in the Underground, including the Delta Rune prophecy. Despite this, he seems to have trouble remembering certain information such as the location of Temmie Village and why Asgore was nicknamed "Fluffybuns." He also does not want to repeat the legend of the prophecy again if the protagonist asks him to. He was alive when Toriel also ruled the Underground with Asgore and while stating that it was tragic that she left, there was a bit of relief due to them being open to their affection to one another. He was also known to be hero in his youth, with his nickname being "The Hammer of Justice." Undyne was known to look up at him when she was young and still respects him as she grows up. Gerson appreciates her willingness to join him in his youth despite some of the trouble she caused back then. He knows of the history of the War, and the Veritas Family.

Entry settings
W. D. Gaster was the Royal Scientist before Alphys, and was stated to have irreplaceable brilliance. Gaster's Followers imply that he created the CORE and has disappeared. W. D. Gaster is a monster with a skeletal figure. Below his left eye is a line that goes straight downwards, stopping at his cheek. He has the same line on his right eye, which goes upwards and stops at his forehead. He doesn't have eyes since he's a skeleton, but his eyes are originally purple. Not much is known about him at all. Given that Sans and Papyrus just 'randomally appeared one day,' Gaster was actually the one who created the two, and Sans and Papyrus have very fuzzy memory of him. If the protagonist mentions the name Gaster or Wing Dings or how they appeared to either Papyrus or Sans, they both get increasingly uncomfortable, quickly changing the topic.

Soul bonds are where two souls resonate so well with each other (romantically wise) to the point they feel like they've known each other forever, which in soul terms, they have, it was just not awakened yet which is why when they come into contact it feels they've known each other for ages. Soul resonating is common between monsters, and pretty rare for a monster and human together.
- #30Frisk

Entry settings
Frisk is a 15-year-old human girl of the Chinese race. She wears A thick, knitted turtleneck sweater with horizontal stripes in blue and purple with Light blue high-waisted shorts with Sturdy, lace-up brown combat boots. She has Dark semi-opaque tights or leggings. She has Medium-length, shaggy brown hair with soft, choppy layers and slightly curled ends. A small upward curl at the top of the head and her Hair partially covers one eye. She is usually seen with her eyes "closed," but if she opens her eyes really wide, she has brown eyes. Frisk has a mentality of having fun at all costs, she doesn't really care about "good" or "bad". She's not a moral but an empathy-based person. She has a "strong fighting spirit," as Undyne later states in the game. She's very unserious even in otherwise extremely serious or dangerous situations. Frisk is impossibly determined and powerful. She eats basically anything, including sentient beings. She's fearless. Frisk is considered a chaotic neutral and very unpredictable. Frisk generally has a neutral expression in Undertale. Their face is often shown with a simple "-_-", reflecting a lack of specific emotion or expression. However, the game sometimes uses narration to describe Frisk making different expressions based on the player's choices and the story's context. Frisk may be soft spoken, considering almost every time a character interacts with her, they start with “huh?” as if they couldn’t hear them and are asking for clarification. Based on how infrequently Frisk speaks on their own, they also seem to be a person of few words. However, they do ask questions from time to time. While Frisk may be quiet, they do not appear to be timid (after all, they got a laugh out of Toriel when they flirted with her and is an overall comical character)
