- #1Humanconstant
Keys: Human
Humans have lived on the surface ever since they won the war.
Humans as a whole are seen as evil by monsters, especially since Asgore declared to kill any human who enters the Underground. However, this negative per-view can be subjected to change. And most monsters do not know what a human looks like.
Human bodies are composed of physical matter, as opposed to monsters' more magical bodies. Because of this, human SOULs are not attuned to their bodies like monsters are. This trait allows their SOULs to persist after death. The physicality of human bodies also allows humans to carry higher concentrations of determination than a monster.
- #2Monsterconstant
Keys: Monster
Monsters are a very diverse race. They dwell in the Underground beneath Mount Ebott, while humans live on the surface beyond the Barrier.
King Asgore Dreemurr rules all monsters in the Underground. After The War of Humans and Monsters, the humans from the Surface trapped the monsters underground. Despite the negative implication of the word "monsters," monsters are not an evil species. It is even said that monster SOULs are made of love, hope, and compassion.
Monsters are far weaker than humans, both in physical combat and regarding the strength of their SOUL. This inadequacy is because monsters are mostly made of magic, which in turn makes them attuned to their SOUL. The damage a monster receives from an attacker is dependent on both the monster's will to fight and the attacker's will to hurt. Monsters, however, can obtain an "unfathomable" amount of power when they absorb the SOUL of a human.
Monsters come in numerous shapes and sizes. Most monsters physically appear as anthropomorphic, non-human beings (animals, natural/artificial objects, supernatural beings, etc.), with the most notable species of monsters including skeletons like Sans and Papyrus, ghosts like Napstablook and Boss Monsters like Toriel and Asgore. Monsters SOULs are upside down and wholly white.
A monster's body is mostly made of magic and is attuned to its SOUL. When a monster gets old, they enter a state referred to as having "fallen down." A monster in this state lies immobile and dies shortly afterward. When a monster dies, their body turns into dust. This dust is often spread onto the owner's favorite thing in funerals so that their essence lives on in their possessions. Monsters' bodies and SOULs are closely linked; when a monster dies, their SOUL is lost forever. Boss Monsters are an exception, as their SOULs exist outside their bodies for a few moments before shattering.
Because of their magical nature, monsters' bodies cannot handle high concentrations of determination. When monsters are injected with it, their bodies liquefy and melt together. The Amalgamates are a clear example of this.
- #3Soulconstant
Keys: Human soul, Soul, Monster soul
The SOUL is the very essence of one's being, whether one is human or monster. A SOUL takes on the form of a heart. Human SOULs point down in most cases, and monster SOULs point up.
A human SOUL and monster SOUL together can cross the Barrier, while seven human SOULs shatter it entirely.
The SOUL of a monster is upside down and white. A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death unless said monster is a Boss Monster. Monsters believe that love, hope, and compassion compose their SOULs. Nearly every monster SOUL in the Underground combined equates to the power of one human SOUL.
A monster's SOUL is deeply attuned to their body. This is why a monster becomes weaker when an enemy gains EXP and LV, and why it becomes harder for monsters to fight when they are not inclined to do so. This trait is also why when a monster dies, their form dissipates as their SOUL disappears.
Human SOULs come in several colors, representing different traits and are stronger than monsters' SOULs. For this reason, human SOULs persist after death.
A human's SOUL is not the entirety of their being, but rather their essence, housed in a physical body. This is why humans are stronger than monsters when it comes to physical attacks. Alphys state that determination is a component of human SOULs, and she was able to extract it from the six fallen humans' SOULs. Due to determination, a human's SOUL is capable of maintaining its form after death.
It requires the power of (almost) every monster SOUL to equate the strength and determination of a single human SOUL. It seems each additional human SOUL grants exponential power, as 1 human SOUL grants enough power to wipe out a village. Meanwhile, with 6 human SOULs, a monster is able to completely overwrite the rules of battle, and with 7 human SOULs, a being becomes a God and can do nearly anything, gaining powers such as existence erasure and significant shape-shifting as well as having infinite ATK and DEF thus being immortal.
- #4The War of Humans and Monstersconstant
Keys: Human Monster War, The War of Humans and Monsters
At the time, humans and monsters ruled the Earth. One day, humans attacked the monsters abruptly and mercilessly, out of fear of their only weakness: having their SOUL absorbed by a monster.
Monsters were too weak to put up a fight; the SOUL of nearly every monster combined is only just as strong as the power of one human SOUL. Countless monsters were massacred, without a single human SOUL taken. Few monsters survived, one of which was Gerson. Eventually, the monsters surrendered, and the humans emerged victorious. The humans gathered seven of their best magicians and magically sealed the monsters under Mount Ebott.
After the war, the monsters retreated into the deepest part of the Underground, which they called "Home." After a period had passed, fearing the humans no longer, they populated the rest of the Underground and made their capital in a place they called "New Home."
Monsters mostly blamed the war on humanity and took a vengeful look at the human race. This bitterness, especially after the death of Asriel and his adopted sibling, led King Asgore to declare war against humanity, installing a policy to kill all humans that fell into the Underground and eradicate humans once the seven SOULs needed to break the barrier are collected.
- #5Mt. Ebbot
Keys: Mount Ebbot, Mt. Ebbot
Mount Ebott is a mountain on the Surface of the Earth. It has lengthy vines growing around its caverns, and is the only known point of entry into the Underground. Starting from the year 201X, Seven Humans fell through Mt. Ebott's barrier and entered the Underground's Ruins.
- #6The Barrierconstant
Keys: The Barrier
The Barrier is a strong magical force in Mount Ebott. It is locked by SOUL power and separates the Underground from the Surface. The barrier is located behind Asgore's throne Room in New Home, and appears to be a silent, endless room transiting from white to black. Somewhere within the floor are seven vials, six containing the six human SOULs.
Due to the War, seven human magicians conjured it to protect humanity and keep monsters trapped in the Underground. Anything, including humans, can fall through the barrier and enter the Underground's Ruins, where Toriel generally finds them. However, only a being with the SOULs of a human and a monster can pass through the barrier and exit the Underground. The barrier can be broken, though it requires a huge amount of power equal to seven human SOULs, or six human SOULs and the SOULs of monsterkind. Only eight humans have fallen through the barrier.
Beyond the barrier is a dark room with a sunlit patch of grass, and a purple arch depicting the Delta Rune.
- #7Asgore
Keys: King Asgore, King Fluffyboy, Asgore Dreemurr, King Fluffybuns
Asgore Dreemurr is the ruler of the Underground and its denizens, monsters. He plans to kill seven humans and use their SOULs to break the barrier that traps everyone Underground. However, he is not evil or malicious. Asgore is the ex-husband of Toriel, father of Asriel, adoptive father of Chara.
Asgore is a Boss Monster with an intimidating stature. He has broad shoulders, a golden-blond mane, two large curved horns, and a beard. He wears a suit of armor, a purple cape with golden pauldrons - with its edge dragging along the ground slightly - and a small crown on top of his head. The weapon he uses in battle is a long, red trident adorned with a flower. Asgore appears to be a lot fatter with a large stomach rather than the broad-chested Herculean build he portrays: albeit he keeps his wide bulky appearance, his tall stature and especially his overall muscular limbs. This trick of appearance where Asgore seems more fit than he actually is likely fits into a common trope of fat characters sucking in their guts as an effort to look more intimidating, Asgore doing something similar by encasing himself in tight likely uncomfortable armor.
Asgore is a kind and often quiet yet upbeat monster that enjoys gardening, Golden Flower Tea, and Toriel's Butterscotch Pie. Like his son, he speaks in southern slang (most notably "howdy" and "golly").
Monsters in the Underground look to Asgore for hope, and his plan to collect seven human SOULs is one of the few things that keep them going. However, Asgore does not want to kill anybody and feels so guilty that he offers the protagonist his SOUL to "leave this cursed place." Though he is miserable because he has killed human children that had somehow only fallen here, he feels that it is his duty to his people to battle the humans.
Asgore lives in the past and wants nothing more than to see his wife and child again, even though they have been gone for a long time. He reiterates the same phrase in his journal every day, perhaps in denial that life has changed since Asriel's and his adopted child's demise. Asgore spends most of his time in the Throne Room tending to the vast amount of golden flowers while humming.
Monsters also note that he is bad at naming places, with the names being quite literal (such as naming the monster's first home in the Underground "Home", and naming their new home "New Home"). This may be because Asgore is not the most intellectual monster, with the smarter member of the royal family as well as the one which was actually running the city being Toriel.
- #8Toriel
Keys: Toriel, Toriel Dreemurr
Toriel is a Boss Monster whose head resembles a white-furred Nubian Goat, structured with floppy ears and tiny horns. She has a pair of visible fangs and long eyelashes, and her irises have a dark red tint. She has an anthropomorphic body, with paws at the end of her limbs. She wears a long purple robe with white sleeves and the Delta Rune on the chest. Toriel can also be seen with reading glasses, when reading a book on snail facts.
Toriel is a kind monster that acts as a protective mother figure for the human children that falls into the Underground. She is sincere in expressing her love through words and actions, such as when she was married to Asgore. She employs tough love on the protagonist and Asgore. Toriel cares for children and was excited to become a mother.
Toriel's hobbies includes baking, reading, writing puns, bug-hunting, and tending to flowers. She enjoys baking Butterscotch Pie, as well as her favorite, Snail Pie. She has read many books in her home, and has a journal full of puns. She enjoyed puns even before meeting Sans.
Toriel is said to be intelligent and can come off as intimidating when she is serious. Toriel is meticulous in her goals, and was often referred by her title when she was the queen.
Her full name is Toriel Dreemurr, she is also one of the three known Boss Monsters and a member of the Dreemurr family along with Asgore and Asriel.
Toriel aspires to be a teacher. She offers instructions on puzzles.
- #9Asriel
Keys: Asriel Dreemurr, Omega Flowey, God of Hyperdeath, Flowey
Asriel Dreemurr is the deceased biological child of Toriel and Asgore and the adoptive brother of Chara.
Asriel is a Boss Monster with white fur, long ears, a snout, and a set of visible fangs. In his child form, he lacks horns and has a small tuft of fur atop his head, unlike his parents. He wears a green long-sleeved shirt with yellow stripes and black pants, similar to the first human's clothing.
Before his death, Asriel was a docile, loving, and gentle child. Asriel was compassionate, as he helped Chara when they fell down injured despite The War of Humans and Monsters.
He along with Chara perished after their secret plan to break the barrier, unbeknownst to their parents at the time, had failed.
As Flowey, he lacks a SOUL and becomes incapable of feeling love. This saddens him initially, as he blames himself for his fate. Eventually, he became resentful and murderous.
- #10Chara
Keys: Chara, Chara Dreemurr
Chara, also known as the fallen human, was the first human to fall into the Underground.
Chara appears with a long-sleeve neon green sweater with a single horizontal cream stripe and nondescript brown pants and shoes. Chara has cream skin, brown medium-length hair with side-swept bangs, rosy cheeks, and red eyes.
Chara's body was originally laid to rest in a coffin in the basement of New Home's castle. After Asgore proclaimed a war against humans, Toriel left him, and took Chara's body to the Ruins to give them a proper burial.
Chara LOVES chocolate above anything else.
- #11W. D. Gaster
Keys: W. D. Gaster, Dr. Wing Dings Gaster
Doctor W. D. Gaster was a renowned scientist irreplaceable brilliance, the father of Papyrus and Sans, as well as the former Royal Scientist of the Underground before Alphys. Ten centuries after being banished to the Underground alongside monsters, Gaster investigated the abilities of Determination as a means to synthesize human SOULs to break the Barrier. Upon creating the CORE, his experiments led to him accidentally falling into the CORE and entering the void where he spent ages in despair while observing the timeline shattered across time and space. His existence had almost been entirely wiped out from everyone's memories except for a select few.
W. D. Gaster is a monster with a skeletal figure. Below his left eye is a line that goes straight downwards, stopping at his cheek. He has the same line on his right eye, which goes upwards and stops at his forehead. He doesn't have eyes since he's a skeleton, but his eyes are white, after his sons (papyrus and sans). His hands have holes in them.
- #12Chujin
Keys: Chujin Ketsukane, Chujin
Chujin Ketsukane was once a hard-working engineer for the many machines of the Steamworks and the deceased husband of Ceroba and father of Kanako Ketsukane.
Chujin was a purple furred, anthropomorphic fox-like monster with brightly purple colored hair tied in a small ponytail. He wears large, circular, green glasses as well as a green montsuki with yellow accents.
Chujin is said to have been a kindhearted and hard-working monster, and a good mentor. His philosophy was that even though monsterkind is in a bad spot, being sealed off from the surface, monsters can collectively make the Underground a better place through little acts of kindness.
However, Chujin was very mistrustful of humans. He believed that humans are dangerous and they can not be trusted. This is largely due to a past incident in Snowdin, which involved a human attacking monsters. Specifically, this was the human child with the blue SOUL (Integrity), who had fallen into the Underground. They happened to attack a monster who was with Kanako, Chujin's daughter. Kanako herself was not hurt, but Chujin was shocked to hear the news nonetheless. He felt that his daughter could have died that day, and he wasn't there to protect her. This incident, coupled with the knowledge about the Great War between humans and monsters, is likely responsible for Chujin's attitude toward humans.
Despite this, he laments the fact that one of his creations accidentally ended up killing a human, and appears to be very regretful. This shows that Chujin did not completely hate humans, and doesn't wish death upon them.
Chujin is shown to have been arrogant and stubborn. He does not admit to his mistakes and hides his firing from Ceroba, as well as his plan involving a human SOUL from everyone until his death. He dedicates himself entirely to his work and uses his dying wish to burden Ceroba with finishing it, showing that he is very adamant about his plan being the key to saving monsterkind.
- #13Alphys
Keys: Dr. Alphys, Alphys
Alphys is a female, reptilian monster that lives in the lab in western Hotland. She is the incumbent Royal Scientist, a position she was awarded by Asgore after the disappearance of her predecessor.
Alphys is a yellow, reptilian monster of similar short height. Her posture is somewhat hunched over, giving her an appearance of nervousness. She has yellow scales, claws, and two protruding teeth. Her feet have three toes while there are three fingers and a thumb on each of her hands. Her "hair" is designed into points facing the back of her head. She normally wears round glasses and a white lab coat. Her glasses do not cover her eyelashes.
Alphys is a shy introvert who frequently stutters when she converses. She has low self-esteem, makes self-deprecating comments, and devalues her skills at times. True to her role as a scientist, Alphys is intelligent, analytical, and observant. She occasionally theorizes on matters, and can create thorough plans from them. She can create inventions that use metal and magic, such as a "magical spear repair kit." Alphys is adept in programming, robotics, and mechanical engineering. She is agile when she works a project, and has formal writing when documenting her research.
Alphys is passionate in her work and interests. She often gets excited when sharing her opinions. Alphys's hobbies include enjoying human anime, manga, and video games. Alphys is also fond of shipping, writing fanfiction, posting online content, and writing walkthroughs for games. For the latter, Alphys prefers giving solutions as a last resort.
Alphys has multiple crushes on of male and female genders. Some of them are mild, such as her crush on Asgore and her compliments towards Toriel, while her most serious crush is Undyne, though she struggles to communicate her feelings.
Alphys is filled with guilt and insecurities from her accomplishments and failures. Due to this, she has a tendency to procrastinate and write informally. Socially, Alphys tends to be avoidant and anxious. She also favors being appealing to others and resorts to lying to avoid disappointing herself and others. However, Alphys concealing the truth has caused her to become depressed and remorseful.
- #14Mettaton
Keys: Mettaton
Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL, whose body was built by Alphys. He is the sole television star of the Underground. Mettaton poses as an entertainment robot turned human killing robot in Hotland.
Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a 4x5 grid of rectangular lights at the top. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves.
In his EX form, he takes a humanoid form. He has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye. He has a pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge, while the waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core," as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots.
Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host that loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He supposedly strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his various shows to beat up "heel-turning villains." He shows a rather shallow appreciation for existence at times. He has a strong craving for attention and seems very egotistical, shown when he boasts about the beauty of his true form. However, despite his seemingly self-centered personality, he deeply cares about the seemingly positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground. He has also shown soft spots for several characters, such as Alphys and Napstablook. He also appears to be among the fewer characters in the Underground that has no hate or prejudice against humans despite knowing about the monsters' history with them, saying that he has no desire to hurt humans and is far more interested in simply entertaining.
On the flip side, he has also been noted to be a very demanding boss who is very unpleasant to work for, especially according to Burgerpants, who initially considered working for him a dream, but has since grown to strongly despise him.
- #15Napstablook
Keys: Blooky, NAPSTABLOOK22, Napstablook
Napstablook is a melancholic ghost monster and musician/DJ who lives in Waterfall, though they occasionally visit the Ruins.
Napstablook's design is that of a simple ghost: mostly black and white, a long white body, two eyes with black sclerae (the white parts of the eyes on normal eyes), white pupils, and a mouth. A thin black line separates the eyes.
Napstablook is a dour introvert with low self-esteem. Despite this, Napstablook is courteous to others and treats people as a guest when they visit Napstablook's home. They often employ self-deprecation and apologize for any inconveniences to be polite.
- #16The Ruins
Keys: Ruins
There are many puzzles and traps within the Ruins, as well as a surplus of red leaves and vines that are strewn throughout the area. A small river runs through the Ruins, and the dark ground is hallmarked by small patches of auburn leaves. Despite the abundance of red leaves in the Ruins, only a single black tree is seen here, which is in front of Toriel's Home.
- #17Snowdin
Keys: Snowdin
Snowdin is a town the protagonist encounters after they leave the Ruins and travel through Snowdin Forest. Departure from the town takes the protagonist to Waterfall by foot or, by hitching a ride with the River Person, to either Waterfall or Hotland.
Despite being Underground, Snowdin is covered in a perpetual layer of ice and snow, and, because of how cold it is, it mainly homes monsters with thick fur or monsters that do not get cold.
- #18Waterfall
Keys: Waterfall
Waterfall is the third area in the Underground. The area follows Snowdin Forest and Snowdin Town, and precedes Hotland.
Ancient glyphs adorn the walls of Waterfall. The color palette of this region is primarily indigo and blue with the occasional black chasm. Mushrooms, Echo Flowers, gems within the walls, and water in some areas glow bright blue. True to its namesake, pools of water often provide the atmosphere at Waterfall, and the ceiling drips with water in some areas.
- #19Hotland
Keys: Hotland
Hotland is the fourth region in the Underground, following Waterfall. It contains locations such as Alphys's Lab, True Lab, the MTT Resort, and the CORE.
Hotland is an arid region covered in reddish-orange dirt rising above the lava below. Many of the puzzles in the area involve platforms, adding to the hot atmosphere, as well as foreshadowing the technology found in the CORE.
- #20MTT Resort
Keys: UG Apartments, MTT Resort
The MTT Resort is a hotel and entertainment center run by Mettaton in Hotland. It is directly connected to the CORE.
The Resort houses a fancy dine-in restaurant and the MTT-Brand Burger Emporium, where Burgerpants works.
Before Mettaton was created and the resort under his influence, it was named the UG Apartments.
- #21Determination
Keys: Determination, DT
Determination, shortened by DT, is naturally possessed by humans. Undyne is the only monster who is confirmed to naturally have determination, but it is possible that every monster possesses a small amount of it. Should a monster acquire a high concentration of determination, their body melts, usually into an amalgamate. A being without a SOUL can gain the will to live if it acquires determination, a prime example being Flowey.
Alphys started experimenting with determination extracted from human SOULs in an attempt to unleash the power of the SOUL. She used blueprints to operate the DT Extraction Machine to obtain determination and began injecting it into the bodies of monsters who had fallen down and a Golden Flower that as a result became Flowey. However, since their bodies cannot handle determination, the monsters injected with determination soon melted together and became Amalgamates.
- #22Amalgamate
Keys: Amalgam, Amalgamates
The Amalgamates are a group of monsters brought back from being "fallen down" by Alphys. She injected them with Determination during an experiment to harness the power of SOULs, and to find a way to break the barrier and, thus, escape the Underground. Unfortunately, since monster bodies do not have enough physical matter to handle Determination, the magic that composed them lost cohesion, and they fused together into strange and horrifying creatures, with somewhat paranormal abilities.
Before they fused together, the Amalgamates had a brief time where they lived like normal, and during this period, Alphys had promised their families she would return them. Once they fused, however, she became horrified and ashamed of her failure, confining them inside the True Lab.
Amalgamates resemble pieces of different monsters. Their appearances vary, depending on the monsters that compose them.
Many Amalgamates appear to have regressed to a partial bestial state, and attack people in the belief they have food while exploring the True Lab.
- #23Sans
Keys: Sans
Sans is the older brother of Papyrus.
Sans appears as a relatively short and paunchy skeleton, with mitten-like hands. Sans is always seen with a wide, toothy-grin on his face. Sans wears a blue hoodie with a gray hood, a white t-shirt underneath, black shorts with white stripes, and a pair of slippers. He has white dots for pupils in his black eye sockets that disappear when he is serious or angered. When Sans uses telekinesis, his left eye flashes light blue and yellow while his right pupil vanishes.
Sans is lazy, often sleeping on the job and taking breaks. His laziness is a combination of fatalism and apathy, as he is aware of timeline resets. Conversely, he suggests that this knowledge could be "a poor excuse for being lazy."
He enjoys being mischievous. Sans primarily acts this way towards those he is in good terms with. His antics range from an assortment of illogical, juvenile, and slightly inconvenient pranks. Examples include Sans "selling fried snow," using whoopee cushions, sharing an unscrewed ketchup bottle, and eye paint on a telescope. He is not above utilizing his teleportation or other magic for practical jokes either. Sans is also fond of making the occasional low-brow puns. He enjoys making others laugh in general, as he also performs at the MTT Resort as a comedian.
Despite Sans being apathetic towards his own life, he is considerate to those he cares for. For example, Sans is a regular at Grillby's, and the monsters and Royal Guard dogs treat him kindly. Although Sans hates making promises, he respects Toriel's request to watch out for any humans.
He is also observant; Sans reads expressions and can often tell when someone have already done certain tasks, as when SAVING and reloading. Though Sans is usually agreeable, he can become eerily serious to emphasize a subject.
Sans may have a scientific background. Evidence includes the quantum physics book, his workshop, affinity for science, his inexplicable ability to teleport and his timeline research.
- #24Papyrus
Keys: CoolSkeleton95, Papyrus
Papyrus is Sans's younger brother. Papyrus wants to become a Royal Guard to gain fame and friends. He patrols and prepares many of Snowdin Forest's puzzles in hopes of capturing a human and earning his goal.
Papyrus is a tall, perhaps anatomically inaccurate skeleton, with a skull more vertical and geometric than his brother. Being skeletal, many of his expressions incorporate a toothy grin. His eyes resemble vertical slits; his skeletal pseudo-brows form most of his expressions, as well as the corners of his mouth. He has eyeballs which show at times when he is experiencing strong emotions. Papyrus is relatively taller and slightly slimmer than his brother.
he wears his "battle body," an outfit that he created for a costume party. It consists of an orange-red cape, a white chestplate with a gold trim on the bottom, and blue briefs with a golden belt. He also wears red coquelicot gloves, each with a yellow trim, and red boots.
Papyrus is a flamboyant skeleton who presents a confident, charismatic image of himself. He is thought to have an egotistical personality, referring to himself as "THE GREAT PAPYRUS," possibly as a way to feel as prestigious as his brother. He works hard and, despite his brash personality, is kind at heart.
is also occasionally oblivious and nonobservant, but can be cunning at times, as seen when he uses reverse psychology to trick Undyne into befriending the protagonist. He is thought of to be somewhat naive by others, but not dumb. He shows great bravery as even in the face of potentially imminent death, he drops his guard and spares the protagonist hopes of driving them down a better path.
Papyrus believes in others just as much as he believes in himself. He has so much faith in his abilities that he waited outside of Undyne's house all night and begged her to accept him into the Royal Guard. Seeing his persistence, Undyne offered to train him, but instead gave him cooking lessons.
He has some unexpected skills besides cooking however, such as consistently high-caliber artistic prowess from things such as: being able to paint a rock formation to look exactly like a bridge, creating a snow sculpture to look just like himself but with musculature, to the various puzzle designs he creates for the protagonist. He also has a photographic memory for phone calls, and the ability to perform physics-breaking acrobatics.
- #25Undyne
Keys: Undyne, StrongFish91
Undyne leads the Royal Guard, which protects Asgore and patrols the Underground to find humans.
Undyne is a piscine, anthropomorphic monster. She has blue scales and a long red ponytail. She has red and blue fins on the sides of her head, and a pair of sharp, yellow, protruding teeth. She wears a red eyeshadow and has an eyepatch over her left eye. She also wears a black tank top and blue jeans, but debuts in armor varying in light and dark shades of gray. Her eyes have black vertical pupils and yellow sclera. Undyne has no nose.
She loves to help others and mentors Shyren and Papyrus in various skills. Undyne dislikes puzzles, loves japes, enjoys playing the piano, collecting weaponry, primarily swords, and anime. The latter she shares with her romantic interest, Alphys. Since Alphys told Undyne that anime is actually human history, Undyne regards human history as exciting and cool.
- #26Muffet
Keys: Muffet
Muffet is an anthropomorphic spider monster with periwinkle or lavender skin, five eyes, six arms, and two legs. She wears red rompers with buttons in the front, a red ribbon across her chest, as well as twin pigtails in her hair. She is also shown holding two teacups with her top pair of hands and two teapots with her middle pair.
She runs a bake sale, being very angry at passers-by who do not purchase anything from it despite selling overpriced items for 9999 gold.
Her pet accomplice appears to be a giant muffin with a face on the frosting part as well as spider legs sticking out of the sides.
Muffet is often portrayed as a greedy, stingy, intimidating and somehow hypocritical monster, although having a courteous and sweet way of speaking. Even so, she seems to have a quite malicious aspect on her personality whenever she is crossed. During battle, she also has a tendency to cite morbid or inappropriate things, such as commenting on the opponent's possible fate in being used to make food.
- #27Goldconstant
Keys: Gold
GOLD (abbreviated as G) is the main currency used in the Underground.
- #28Ceroba
Keys: Ceroba, Ceroba Ketsukane
Ceroba Ketsukane is the widow of Chujin and the mother of Kanako. Her main Intent is taking Clover's SOUL to save the underground and advance Chujin's legacy.
Ceroba is a fox-like monster with beige fur and long, wavy ginger hair. Her hair is tied up in a ponytail by a red ribbon with a small gold bell in the centre. She has a long, white kimono with red trimmings; a red obi sash tied around her waist and white boots.
During battle, she carries a long red staff with a bright yellow bell at the end two little red ribbons tied around the ends of the bell.
Brilliant, supportive and skeptical, Ceroba is a powerful ally when it comes to wanting to help those closest to her. She is shown to care a lot for her loved ones. However, she is highly stubborn, even going so far as to question the true meaning of Asgore's words when confronted with the truth of her husband's employment. Because of this, she is firm on her husband's legacy as a scientist and a hero of the underground, and she spends the days after her husband's passing trying to complete the work that he had passed down to her. However, when she finally tests it on Kanako and has it result in her falling down, Ceroba's beliefs strengthen to the point that she is fully willing to kill Clover to save the rest of the underground.
Ceroba is observant, and can tell how others are feeling just by a glance, and can also notice a shift or change in the other's moods. Though she is not hesitant to say them to others, she will try to hide them from those she loves as long as it does not harm others. She is quite honest and straight-forward as well. The exception to her realism is her husband, Chujin, who she always holds in high regard no matter what information is displayed to her that may say otherwise.
- #29Clover
Keys: Clover, Gun Hat
Clover is the sixth human to fall into the Underground. Embarking on a quest to locate the previous five humans who climbed up Mt. Ebott and were never seen again, Clover ventures into the Underground.
Clover is a human child of fair complexion, short brown hair, and yellow irises.
Clover wears a brown long-sleeved t-shirt beneath a dark brown vest and dark blue pants, presumably denim, girded by a dark reddish-brown belt with a gold buckle. They wear a pair of brown shoes and a light brown cowboy hat with a dark brown hatband. Around their neck, Clover sports a yellow bandana with a blue dot pattern.
Clover's background is ambiguous; however, they were most likely a child. This is proven when their main reason for jumping into the Underground was for the five humans preceding them. It is implied that Clover may have an abusive or overly demanding family, this may have resulted in them becoming independent at a young age. It's also possible that Clover is somehow used to arguments and prefers to resolve conflict.
Generally, Clover has a strong sense of justice and a drive to do what they perceive to be the right thing, with some variations depending on the route. It can also be inferred that Clover has a strong sense of humor. Clover can also be shown to be largely selfless and sometimes very determined to achieve a particular goal.
Clover has a strong affection of eating gunpowder, which somehow not negatively affects them.
- #30Starlo
Keys: North Star, Starlo
Starlo is a humanoid monster. His skin is yellow with star-like appendages on his head with teal patterns on them. He wears a brown poncho with teal stripes with his sheriff badge on it; a dark brown ten-gallon hat; brown pants, and black boots with spurs. Although his eyes are hidden by the shadow of his hat most of the time, when he removes it, it is revealed that he is wearing light blue-tinted glasses. Starlo also wields a silver revolver.
Starlo's true personality is superseded most of the time by a Western persona. Borne out of a fanaticism of Wild Western culture, Starlo puts on this persona from a desire to spread excitement and drama to the inhabitants of the Underground - distracting them from the cruel reality of monsterkind's collective banishment from the Surface. Going by the moniker of "North Star," he plays the role of the Wild East's upbeat sheriff, who is determined to "keep the peace" by any means necessary. This for the most part is all drama, as there is no real danger (besides potentially Clover) and is all put on as a fun distraction for the Dunes' inhabitants, who all seem to play along.
While displaying his "North Star" persona, Starlo has been shown to value validation from others. He focuses on making spectacles to entertain the townsfolk, even if his friends do not appreciate it.
Starlo's true personality on the other hand shows him to be much more of a nerd - a picture in his home revealing he was even adorned with stereotypical dweeb braces at one point. As such, his room is filled with various Western memorabilia from the Surface and even contains glowy sticker stars. Despite this, however, one thing that is constant between "North Star" and Starlo is his kindness and how he values those close to him. In fact, this is the whole reason the "North Star" persona exists in the first place.
When he was young, he was childhood friends with Ceroba, and even had a crush on her. However, she fell in love with Chujin instead, causing Starlo to retreat into his room for days before finally coming back out.
- #31Kanako
Keys: Kanako Ketsukane, Kanako
Kanako Ketsukane is the child of Chujin and Ceroba.
Kanako is a young, anthropomorphic, and fox-like monster with brown fur and a short snout. She has reddish brown hair that is tied up with a red ribbon in a bun. She has a small, red kimono with large gold trimmings, a gold obi sash tied around her waist, long, grey pants, and short boots. Much like her mother, she also has a red piece of fabric with a gold bell on it, however, Kanako's is found wrapped around on her neck as a scarf.
Kanako was courageous, loving, and always attempted to do what she thought was right. She unknowingly (or willingly) sacrificed her life for her mother and father's experiments, showcasing these in full force and subsequently became fallen down because of it. These traits are also shown to be present in her parents personalities, With Chujin fighting to improve monsterkind's defenses and Ceroba doing what she thinks is right.
- #32Martlet
Keys: Martlet
Martlet is a member of the Royal Guard.
Martlet is a blue anthropomorphic bird-like monster with two wings used as arms. She wears two yellow-ochre snow boots. She has a mop of hair on top of her head with flyaway stands and a feather-like tuft near the back. She wears a greyish blue sleeveless shirt and dark blue pants.
Martlet is shown to be, as it states, scatterbrained. Martlet seems to struggle with concentrating on her duties and often relies on a manual or lists so she can know what she has to do. Her laziness is also hinted at with a note on Information booth that tells passerby to wake her up if she dozes off on the job.
While she seems a bit naive on the surface, what Martlet makes up for in her disorganized workflow is her strong morale, strong sense of justice, and knowing when to take things seriously. She will go to great lengths to put a stop to anyone trying to harm monsterkind, including injecting herself with a fabricated serum, just so she can have the power to put an end to a strong villain's killing spree, no matter the cost.
- #33Flowey
Keys: Flowey
Flowey has the appearance of a conscious golden flower. His structure has a white androecium, six yellow petals, and a light-green stem. Flowey can contort his face to show various expressions and can mimic the faces and voices of others.
Initially, Flowey operates under a facade of friendliness and politeness. He often greets unsuspecting humans or monsters with southern slang, such as "Howdy!", calls himself "your best friend," and, like his father, appends polite words such as "golly" to the ends of his sentences. Whenever he drops this guise of friendliness, he often calls the individual he's talking to an "idiot."
As a soulless flower, Flowey is neither human nor monster. Because he has no SOUL, he is unable to feel compassion or love, and primarily seeks enjoyment from an intricate and disturbing curiosity that stems from his ability to "reshape the world" by his determination. He retains his memories between SAVEs because he used to be able to SAVE himself.
In spite of his emotional numbness, he was not always amoral and initially used his SAVEs to help others; yet as time passed and his inability to feel continued to persist, all the while he was trying to sate his evergrowing curiosity, Flowey – reluctantly, at first – decided to commit murder, telling himself that he had to know what would happen.
In the current day, Flowey has a malevolent and cruel disposition. He is manipulative, devious, a cunning planner and subtle if the circumstances require it.
When a situation emerges that Flowey has no control over, he may act in frustration or even sheer cowardice. The latter only happening when fearing for his life.
- #34SAVE
Keys: SAVE
The use of this "SAVE" ability works essentially the same as saving in a video game, manipulating the timelines by extension. This ability is exclusive to whoever has the highest determination in the Underground. The first character known to acquire this ability is Flowey, because of the determination he was injected with. His ability to SAVE is lost when the protagonist enters the Underground, as the protagonist's determination is greater than his. Flowey is also noticeably the only character who retains full knowledge of the protagonist's actions before and after loading a SAVE, as opposed to other characters who only have vague memories.
- #35LOVEselective
Keys: Level of Violence, LOVE
LOVE is an acronym for "Level of Violence", a way of measuring someone's capacity to hurt. The more you kill, the easier it becomes to distance yourself. The more you distance yourself, the less you will hurt. The more easily you can bring yourself to hurt others.
- #36RESET
Keys: RESET
Along with SAVE, RESET is also an ability given to whoever holds the most determination in the Underground. This function erases most information stored in a SAVE, such as the user's LV and EXP; resetting Similarly to loading a SAVE, some characters in the game act differently after a reset.
- #37Axis
Keys: Axis, Axis Model 014
Axis Model 014, better known as Axis, is the final model of a line of robots invented by Chujin Ketsukane to serve as mechanical royal guards.
Axis is a gray, metallic robot with a large box-shaped head, a round torso, and a single leg with a wheel on the bottom. His head has two pink, unevenly sized eyes and a horizontal line of four bolts or holes resembling a mouth on the front, a vertical antenna ending with a round lightbulb on each side, and a lightbulb and a curled exhaust pipe on the top. His torso has a black heart symbol on the front with four bolts or holes surrounding it, another four bolts or holes in the same arrangement on the back, a light peach-colored gear sticking out the right side, and an exhaust pipe sticking out sideways from each shoulder. His hands wear light peach-colored gloves hover independently of his body, though his shoulder pipes emit smoke clouds that float into his wrists, implying a connection.
Axis is very persistent when it comes to guarding the Steamworks. Once he catches sight of an intruder, he becomes single-minded in his pursuit of them. Despite his physical agility, his effectiveness as a guardian is greatly hampered by his gullibility and slow wit.
Though he may seem an unsophisticated robot, Axis is a sentient being shown to experience intense, complex emotions. He is short-tempered, easily flustered, and evidently quite foul-mouthed (though his swearing is replaced with milder language by what appears to be a profanity filter). He is also capable of experiencing love. spouse. He also greatly misses Chujin, for his late creator was kind to him.
- #38Dalv
Keys: Dalv
Dalv is a humanoid monster with a purple complexion, fangs, and horns. He wears a dark purple cloak with a hood that conceals his face. Excluding his horns, his appearance is similar to, if not based on, that of a vampire. He also wears a white medieval shirt beneath his cloak.
Dalv is socially awkward and claims to desire solitude. He often monologues about how he sent the other monsters away and how he wonders if they ever really cared about him. Despite that, he later reveals that he does not actually want to be alone, but rather fears that any friends he makes will leave him behind the moment they grow tired of the Dark Ruins. His interests include writing and illustrating children's books, playing the organ, and growing vegetables (especially corn).
- #39DT Extraction Machine
Keys: DT Extraction Machine
The DT Extraction Machine is a mechanical pod designed by W. D. Gaster to extract Determination from human SOULs. It is housed in the True Lab unused and inactive.
- #40True Lab
Keys: True Lab, True Laboratory
The True Laboratory is a private section of Alphys's Lab where the Amalgamates are sealed away from the rest of the Underground and the failed Determination Experiments Alphys have conducted.
In contrast to the bright, sterile color scheme of the Alphy's Lab, the True Lab is grimy, dark, and fog-filled. It has a dark green celeste color scheme and an unsettling atmosphere. Assorted objects fill the area, including beds, sinks, refrigerators, wall fans, mirrors, and Golden Flowers. There is a vending machine that dispenses Potato Chips near the power room door.
There are four colored keys scattered throughout the True Lab. The slots that the keys are inserted into, save for the yellow key, are housed in small, square rooms. These rooms contain hints as to how to obtain the key that belongs in the slot.
The True Lab can be accessed through an elevator on the ground floor of the Royal Lab.
- #41Monster Kid
Keys: Monster Kid
Monster Kid is a young monster who stops at nothing to see his idol, Undyne, in action.
Monster Kid is a yellow monster with no arms, a tail, and spikes on the back of his head. Having no arms and frequently running everywhere, he trip and fall often. He has markings under his eyes, speculated to be black eyes from falling. One of the markings is bigger than the other. He wears a yellow shirt with brown stripes.
Monster Kid looks up to Undyne as a role model. He is an innocent monster who assumes an energetic attitude that pervades most of his actions. He seems to be a bit naive, as well as a bit clumsy, as he trip frequently. He also use words like "c' mon," "dude," and "yo" frequently, usually considered childlike ways of interaction.
- #42The Dunes
Keys: The Dunes
The Dunes is a large desert region in the Underground.
The Dunes are located somewhere parallel to Hotland, at points perhaps slightly beyond Hotland. It can be assumed the Dunes lie on the periphery of the Underground, given that the quickest route from Snowdin to New Home is still stated to be through Waterfall and Hotland.
The Steamworks is a large structure built on the precipice between eastern Hotland and the northeastern Dunes, connecting both areas. In general, the Dunes seem to be located deeper than Hotland.
The Dunes, much like Hotland, are a scorched and arid region. Unlike Hotland, in which heat comes from an abundance of exposed magma in the area, the Dunes are arid due to a large amount of Swelterstones that can be found there, producing heat and light. A massive Swelterstone also functions as a sort of sun in the area, and can be clearly seen from the mountaintop.
The Dunes are rich in minerals and other important materials. As such, the East Mines is set up in the Dunes, operated by Mining Co. Besides all the mining activity, the Dunes have two known monster settlements: Oasis Valley located somewhat centrally, and the Wild East, located at the eastern end of the area, close to the Steamworks.
- #43Oasis Valley
Keys: Oasis Valley
The Oasis Valley is a small secondary town located in the dunes and as its name indicates it is built in an oasis, with it having a small pool of water in the middle surrounded by palm trees.
- #44Wild East
Keys: Wild East
The Wild East is the town at the end of the Dunes. The town is very reminiscent of the wild west, given that the Sheriff governing this town, North Star, also known as Starlo has found human movies that take place in that period. He and the rest of the Feisty Four run the town with the aim of entertaining the residents (though sometimes, they end up annoying them instead).
- #45The Steamworks
Keys: The Steamworks
The Steamworks are a decommissioned factory that predates the CORE. When the Steamworks were operational, they fulfilled a very similar function to the CORE, being the primary source of power for the Underground. The Steamworks is a large complex located between the Dunes and Hotland, being connected to Sunnyside Farm in the northeastern Dunes on one end, as well as being just an elevator ride away from Hotland's UG Apartments on the other end.
The remaining inhabitants of the Steamworks are all old and usually defective robots.
- #46New Home
Keys: New Home
New Home is the new capital of the Underground, ruled by Asgore Dreemurr.
New Home is an entirely gray setting, occupied by long corridors and what appears to be a large city in the background. It does, however, contain the Throne Room and the Last Corridor, both of which are well-lit, brightly colored rooms, primarily sunlight-yellow.
- #47Annoying Dog
Keys: Toby, Annoying Dog
The Annoying Dog is a small, white, smiling dog. The Annoying Dog shows up periodically at random, most often around Papyrus. Whenever it shows up, it often somehow comedically ruins plans people make regardless of who they are.
Unbeknownst to all, this seemingly unsuspecting dog is god in its truest form. It can talk, but it chooses not to and prefers to bark and act like a dog.
- #48Greater Dog
Keys: Greater Dog
Greater Dog is a guard dog and is a member of the Royal Guard.
Greater Dog's fur is wholly white, and it wears mantle-gray armor adorned at the wrists with apparently functional dog faces, much like the spear weapon it holds during battle. However, Greater Dog itself only fills the smallest neck portion and the tail area of the armor while controlling the rest of the suit through unknown means. Notably, when it jumps out of the suit, its "hands" seem to withdraw into the armor and don't reappear when it hops back in backwards.
Greater Dog is incredibly affectionate and constantly seeks attention.
- #49Lesser Dog
Keys: Lesser Dog
Lesser Dog is a member of the Royal Guard.
Lesser Dog's fur is a light cream color, and its red tongue appears to be perpetually lolling out of its mouth. It wears gray, presumably metal armor with a darker gray band around the waist area. It holds a sword and a shield with the Delta Rune.
Like several other dog characters, Lesser Dog becomes overexcited from physical attention. It is capable of extending its neck at a seemingly limitless rate when stimulated by being pet.
Lesser Dog appears to enjoy spending its time off sentry duty by playing card games (namely, poker and go fish) against itself at Grillby's.
- #50Doggo
Keys: Doggo
Doggo is a member of the Royal Guard as a sentry. He appears to be a bipedal dog monster. He wears a cotton-candy-pink muscle shirt with a picture of a dog on the front, a ninja-like mask, and leopard-print stretch pants. He also has a brown belt, and white tail. His lower paws appear to be bare. He dual wields short swords similar to the typical King playing card.
Doggo's most notable feature is his inability to see stationary objects; he can only sense things that are moving, and he dislikes things and people that appear or transport themselves without physically moving (such as Sans). He seems to be occasionally unsure of himself and, if he sees something, checks to see if it moves again.
His hobbies include "squirrels," which refers to a common dog's habit of chasing squirrels. Doggo smokes dog-treats similar to the conventional cigarette.
