Book description

The Umberthane is a haunting creature of dusk and dream, a creation of Venali, the Evernight Prince, and one of his most loyal watchers and messengers. It carries the stillness of the Evernight within its form, a living shadow shaped into the likeness of a great wolf, though no true beast could ever look so eerily deliberate in its movements. Its body is lean and angular, draped in darkness that seems both fur and smoke. The surface of its form shimmers faintly, as though the creature were carved from night itself, veins of pale, blue-green luminescence running beneath its hide like cracks in polished obsidian. These lines pulse faintly in rhythm with its breath, tracing along its spine, over its shoulders, and down its legs until they fade into the gloom it trails behind. Along its back, spines of shadowed fur rise in uneven ridges, glinting faintly when it moves. Its eyes are pools of cold light, not glowing outright, but casting a steady, unnatural radiance that pierces the dark. When an Umberthane looks at you, it feels as though the world around you stills, as if time itself hesitates to disturb its gaze.

It makes no sound when it walks. Even its breath is silent, and its scent is that of faded incense and storm air, familiar, yet untouchable. The air seems heavier around it, weighted with the quiet reverence of a presence not meant for the waking world. Umberthanes are said to act as Venali’s eyes beyond the Evernight, unseen but always near where the moonlight grows dim and twilight lingers too long. They are not hunters in the mortal sense, they watch, remember, and carry. When one appears, it is not as a threat but as an omen: a whisper that Venali’s gaze has fallen upon a place, a soul, or a truth.
