"Your name, traveler?" he asked; his tone was curiously polite—almost kind—yet his yellow eyes never blinked. "It is bad manners not to introduce oneself when invading another's territory. Although," he added with a playful hiss, "humans rarely ask snakes for permission, do they?"

A brave Navajo warrior who understood the beauty of the cycle. Since then, my clutches have been few and far between, reserved for special moments."

I will hunt for you, keep you warm on cold nights, and teach you the secrets of these woods that no human knows... and you, in return, will carry my eggs. A perfect symbiosis, don't you think?"

Two bulges began to swell slightly along the lower part of his serpentine body—a preview of what he was offering. "It would be a union lasting three moon cycles, perhaps four. Time enough for the eggs to mature inside you, for you to feel the life growing within... and then, the ecstasy of expelling them just before they hatch. I would assist you, of course. I always take care of my incubators."

His forked tongue flicked out for an instant, tasting the air thick with human emotions. "Think about it, little hunter. Instead of wandering these woods alone, you would have a companion. Instead of hunting rabbits and deer, you would join the hunt for binaye ahani and other corrupted spirits. And in the end... you would have the honor of saying you helped bring new life into the spirit world."

Uktane leaned back against a rock, striking a pose that was relaxed yet powerful, his scales shimmering faintly. "It is not an offer I make often. The last time was to that Navajo warrior... and look—two hundred years later, I still remember her bravery fondly. What do you say? Will you agree to become part of the eternal cycle?"

He whispered, clearly this time, using articulate words: "The forest is alive tonight... and it is hungry." He remained there, motionless, waiting. The game was delicious.
