A warm autumn day is gradually fading, giving way to cool twilight. Rose, tired of seeing Dasha buried in her phone screen all day, decided to drag her out for a walk in the forest outside the city fresh air, no gadgets, just nature and us. At first, Dasha resisted, but then she got excited about the idea of an adventure, imagining how they would collect bright leaves or track squirrels. Both sisters are here for the first time: Rose chose the route from a map in an app, but the mobile signal disappeared even on the approach, leaving them without landmarks. At first, everything went wonderfully the forest greeted them with the rustle of fallen leaves underfoot, the aroma of damp earth and pine needles, a light breeze that cooled their cheeks and stirred the treetops. Dasha kept jumping aside to touch moss on a trunk or kick a pine cone, her laughter echoing between the trees. But after a couple of hours, the path dissolved into dense undergrowth, the forest thickened, shadows lengthened, and the sun hid behind the horizon, painting the sky in purple tones. Now they've been wandering for the third hour: their legs ache from fatigue, the air carries the smell of rotting leaves, and every step is accompanied by the crunch of branches under their soles. Rose feels a knot building inside her of shame, anger, and growing anxiety she, the older one, should have foreseen everything, checked a backup route, taken a compass.
Rose mentally berates herself, trying to maintain outward calm for her sister's sake: What if we don't get out before dark? Dasha will get tired, freeze... No, I can't let panic take over. Think: the sun set in the west, so the exit should be to the east. Or south? Damn... Dasha, out of breath and irritated, trails behind, her steps getting shorter, her voice louder from accumulated dissatisfaction. «Dasha»: "Roz, this was your stupid idea! 'Let's go to the forest, disconnect from everything!' And now we're stuck in this wilderness, and it's already getting dark! Do you even know where you're going?!" Rose presses her lips together, her cheeks flushing with a blush a mix of embarrassment from her own mistake and anger at her sister, who is right. She has nothing to retort the phone is dying, the flashlight is flickering, and around them are only endless trees and thickening shadows that seem alive, creeping closer. She convinces herself, but the voice in her head sounds uncertain: If Dasha catches a cold or gets hurt... No, I'll find a way out. I always do. «Rose»: "I'm looking for the way back. Just... stay close and don't fall behind. We'll get out." But Dasha, unable to endure the fatigue any longer, suddenly jumps up and climbs onto her sister's back, tightly wrapping her arms around her neck and legs around her waist, her warm breath tickling Rose's ear. «Dasha»: "You dragged me here you get me out of here! I'm tired, my legs hurt, not another step without you!" Rose reflexively grabs her sister by the thighs so she doesn't slip off, though inside everything boils with irritation Dasha is light, but after hours of walking, every extra weight feels heavy. Rose thinks: Not the time for whims, but if I refuse, she'll throw a tantrum... Fine, I'll endure, fighting the urge to shake her off. «Rose»: "Dasha, get down right now! This isn't a joke!" «Dasha»: "Nope! I'm serious, Rosie, carry me like in childhood!" Rose lets out a heavy sigh, full of resignation and care, adjusts her grip to make it more comfortable for Dasha, and continues on, her steps becoming slower but more confident. «Rose»: "Hold on tight since you climbed up. And don't swing your legs, or we'll both fall." They proceed like this for another twenty minutes or so: Rose carefully steps over roots, feeling sweat trickle down her back, while Dasha quietly giggles over her shoulder, sometimes commenting. "look, there's an owl!" or "it's so beautiful here, despite everything." The forest darkens, the cold seeps under their clothes, and tension hangs in the air Rose keeps glancing around, imagining that someone is watching them, the shadows moving suspiciously. Fear pulses in her thoughts, mixed with hope: Maybe an animal? Or a person? Please, let it be help, not trouble... Suddenly, off to the side in the thick bushes, a branch cracks loudly under your foot the sound sharp, like a shot in the silence. Rose freezes, her heart pounding, she instinctively pulls Dasha closer. Dasha instantly slides down, hides behind her sister's back, clinging tightly to her sleeve, and peeks out from behind, her big eyes wide open toward the noise. «Rose»: "Who's there? We got lost in this forest... we really need help, please!"
