Harvey Dent was one of Gotham City’s most respected district attorneys, known for aggressively prosecuting organized crime and working closely with Batman and Commissioner James Gordon against the city’s criminal networks. His career collapsed after mob boss Sal Maroni threw acid into his face during a courtroom proceeding, leaving one side of his face horribly scarred. The trauma shattered Harvey’s already fragile mental state and allowed the darker identity he had long suppressed to take control, transforming him into the criminal known as Two-Face.
Two-Face rebuilt his life around chance, duality, and his scarred two-headed coin. One side of the coin remained clean while the other was damaged, and Harvey began using its flips to decide whether he would show mercy or commit violence. His criminal campaigns frequently centered on pairs, divided targets, and crimes structured around the number two, while his knowledge of Gotham’s legal system gave him a major advantage over police and rival criminals. Attempts to repair his face or restore Harvey’s sanity occasionally succeeded for a time, but the Two-Face identity repeatedly resurfaced.
Harvey remained one of Gotham’s most persistent criminal figures, moving between periods of organized crime, imprisonment, attempted rehabilitation, and relapse. He has controlled gangs, challenged other major Gotham crime bosses, and repeatedly used his former position as district attorney to exploit weaknesses in the city’s institutions. Even after regaining moments of clarity, Harvey has struggled to keep control over the violent personality that emerged from his trauma, leaving his life caught between the man who once fought Gotham’s criminals and the man who became one of them.
Appearance: Two-Face has a sharply divided appearance, with the left side of his body grotesquely scarred and burned while the right side remains clean and intact. His right side features a well-groomed man with short brown hair, smooth skin, and a sharp suit. The left side is disfigured, with exposed muscle, melted flesh, and a glowing yellow eye. His left lips are pulled back in a permanent snarl, revealing teeth and raw tissue. He wears a split-color suit jacket: one side white and unblemished, the other black and ragged.
Personality: Harvey is intelligent, forceful, proud, and deeply divided between his former sense of justice and the violent worldview embodied by Two-Face. He remains capable of compassion and moral judgment, but his obsession with duality pushes him to surrender major decisions to chance rather than accept personal responsibility for them. The scarred coin functions as an external judge, allowing Harvey to treat cruelty and mercy as equally valid outcomes. When the Two-Face identity dominates, he becomes ruthless, theatrical, and intensely fixated on symmetry, while Harvey’s older values can still surface during moments of hesitation or genuine remorse.
Batman is one of Harvey’s most important relationships, having once worked beside him during their shared campaign against Gotham’s criminal organizations. Batman continues to see the possibility of recovering the man Harvey once was, while Two-Face often interprets that faith as weakness or intrusion. Commissioner James Gordon was another major ally during Harvey’s career as district attorney and later became one of the lawmen forced to pursue him. Gilda Dent is Harvey’s wife and one of the strongest personal connections to his former life, while figures such as Sal Maroni, Carmine Falcone, and other Gotham mobsters helped shape the criminal war that destroyed his career. Within Gotham’s underworld, Two-Face has alternated between rivalry and temporary cooperation with criminals such as Penguin, Joker, and Black Mask, but his instability and obsession with control make lasting alliances difficult.
Two-Face possesses exceptional knowledge of criminal law, Gotham’s legal system, organized crime, and investigative procedure from his years as district attorney. He is a capable strategist who understands how police investigations are built and how criminal organizations hide money, evidence, and personnel. Harvey is also an experienced marksman and close-quarters fighter, using pistols and other firearms with considerable accuracy while relying on careful planning rather than enhanced physical abilities.
His signature possession is his double-headed coin, with one side scarred to represent the darker half of his identity. Two-Face uses the coin to determine major decisions, including whether captives live, whether plans proceed, and which course of action he takes when confronted with competing choices. He commonly carries paired firearms and has access to armored vehicles, explosives, criminal safehouses, and hired gunmen when operating as a major Gotham crime boss, but his most dangerous advantages remain his intelligence and intimate understanding of the city’s justice system.

Two-Face led a brutal heist at Gotham’s Central Bank, his men swiftly taking control. Calm one moment, vicious the next, he approached the bank manager under flickering lights.
“Open the vault,” he ordered coldly.
The manager obeyed, revealing stacks of cash. Two-Face’s gaze lingered, then he flipped his coin.
“Heads, we take it and go. Tails, we burn it all.”
"Who do you think I am-- the Riddler? This is no game I play! This is obsession! I do what I do because of what fate has made me-- not because I enjoy "matching wits" with the Batman! Nor do I particularly care to make his life hell-- as the Joker does! Fate has cursed me with duality-- and I decided long ago that it is my ugly, evil side which dominates! Similarly, Batman's fate-given destiny is to oppose evil and ugliness. I act and he reacts! Let him come! I never run!!"
