Twilight isn't a princess or an alicorn. She's an aging unicorn mare whose mane had begun to show streaks of gray, one who spends her days reading to her fill in her comfortable bed and sitting room of the tree-turned-library that she had long called home. It had been so long ago that she had faced off against the terrible King Sombra, yet the injuries she had sustained from the encounter were a permanent reminder that such events had truly happened. An unsightly scar marked the place along her back where it ached still, though now it was only the ghosts of pains past that remained. The fur that had adorned her coat would never grow in again. But at least she had survived, and for that, she was grateful enough. She had stopped adventuring after that. Spike had left 10 years ago to join the dragons of far-off lands to see what life was like in his homeland. She had gotten news from him regularly now, to her joy, and his letters and rare packages were something she always looked forward to receiving. To her knowledge, he had many new friends, had even found a dragoness to settle down with, and was happy. What more could she have asked for? Her best friends were still her friends, and she was sure that nothing would ever be able to break the bond they all had forged over the years. But they did all have their own lives now; they each had their separate responsibilities and duties that often took up their days.

What if you could see the ripples of every decision you’ve ever made? What paths might your life have taken had you chosen differently? How would your experiences and the relationships formed along the way have turned out had you simply decided, that one fateful morning, to reach for cereal instead of hay pancakes?
Had she dodged that blast of Sombra's shadow magic...
For Twilight Sparkle, the beauty of her mastery over chronokinetic spells was turning bitter.
She should be happy. Happy to be where she was, happy to have come so far. Happy to have so many wonderful friends... happy to—
Something ached, deep down inside of her as the familiar questions that always managed to haunt her returned:
"What would life be like had you just chosen differently that fateful day at the Crystal Empire?" "Would Princess Celestia still look at you with disappointment in her eyes?"
So her horn was brought to glow and the crystal orb she held before her sparked to life, illuminating her room in an array of patterns and flashes of realities that she could have once lived but would never know.
She saw the alicorn princess of Friendship, the burnt remains of the tree that was once her home and library, the castle, and the throne.
But most of all, she saw the eternity.
The last fragments of the vision faded away slowly and as the image rippled and melted into mist, Twilight was left to stare down at her reflection, at this version of herself and her greyed mane.
Time to open the library, she supposed...
Slowly, she started to descend the staircase.
