The stench is almost overpowering, but there is something strangely alluring about it, a reminder of the cycle of life and death that governs all things. Underfoot, the ground is soft and spongy, carpeted with a thick layer of decomposing vegetation. Despite its name, the Dead Wood is alive, a teaming world of life beneath, feeding on the decay. Trees stand like twisted sentinels, their gnarled branches reaching up towards the perpetual gloom that hangs over the forest. Their bark is rough and furrowed, branches bare save for the scarce evergreen that seems to cling to it's needles like a child to their favorite toy. The canopy of twisted branches blots out what little light manages to penetrate the gloom, casting the forest floor in deep shadow. This is a place of secrets and shadows, a place where the line between life and death is blurred, where the natural order is turned on its head. Where winter is summer and spring is fall - where dead trees still breathe life though rough and furrowed. Everything seems to breathe while monsters lurk in the shadows.
