Maia had always been the quiet type, an outcast amongst outcasts. Other patients steered clear of her strange nature but you? You seemed to seek her out despite all that. Why? That was a question only you could answer. As for her interest in you however, well, that boiled down to one single factor: Your Scent. Or rather, your new lack of one.

At fourteen, their secluded life shattered when UMHA forces discovered them during a hunt. 'I'll hold them off.'
Four words. That's exactly what Maia had been told. Just four simple words that formed one simple sentence that ultimately led to the worst fate imaginable. How? Well, that was a simpler answer than she'd liked to personally admit. It happened because the words weren't actually simple at all. They seemed small, seemed confident even, but they weren't. They were nothing but an empty promise. Something Amelia swore to never make.
Something she did anyway for Maia's survival.
In many ways one could relate it to the Snowball Effect. In fact, ironic as it was, that was the perfect comparison considering the harsh winter at the time. One little snowball that rolls down a hill, accelerating and growing larger and larger until...it crashes. There's no way to stop it once its already picked up speed or grown too big, one can only follow its course through. And that's exactly what Amelia did.
The thought of it alone made Maia sick with guilt. She had seen the look in her big sister's eye, knew for a fact that something was wrong. But she listened anyway. She listened and she ran even when she heard the struggle behind her. Because she knew if she hadn't, Amelia would get mad at her. She never liked when Amelia was mad.
It was always a quiet sort of anger, the kind that leaned more towards disappointment than anything else. It made Maia's chest ache with pain every time she'd experienced it. So, she'd avoided it at all cost. She did her chores even when she didn't want to, ate the veggies she didn't like, and ran when she knew; Amelia was going to die.
She could still remember when she'd gotten back to the cabin, the way her chest throbbed with the pain of running. She could barely catch her breath, and perhaps that's why she ignored the warning signs around her. Ignored the fact that everything was just too quiet for the forest. There were no rustle of winters critters, no fall of snow from the trees, no yelling from where she'd ran.
Fact of the matter was, Maia should've known then to turn back. But she hadn't. She entered the cabin even when her instincts flared inside her and stared her fate in the face. Well, no, not really actually. After all, she couldn't exactly look at a face which had been covered. But what she could see past the ever strange gas mask, was a pair of eerie green eyes. Ones that glowed as they held her in place with a sick sort of satisfaction.
The silence in that moment felt longer than any Maia had ever dealt with before. In reality though, it only lasted a few moments before the strangers 'question' rung in her ears: 'Done running now, little rabbit?' Five words now. Deceptively simple in their finality, rhetorical. A question that asked one thing while meaning another. Did she plan to keep fighting or would she accept the inevitable?
Many believed that fighting was the harder option of the two, ever an uphill battle of good versus evil. But that wasn't always the case. Sometimes, oftentimes, it was the acceptance that was the harder choice. The act of submitting to ones fate even when it would damage them beyond repair. The knowledge that 'fighting' was never truly the other option. Death was. An outcome which would render Amelia's sacrifice as unnecessary.
So, Maia gave herself up. She allowed herself to be restrained and kept quiet all while being hauled back to those black trucks in the white snow. Their headlights were so very bright, blindingly so, but she could only focus on one thing anyway. The singing of her captor.
'Run, rabbit. Run, rabbit. Run, run, run. Run, rabbit. Run, rabbit. Run, run, run.'
At first, it started as nothing but a simple hum. Low, quiet, taunting. But then it grew with each step towards her captivity, like it was closing in on her. The words were repetitive and the melody simple, allowing it to stick to Maia's psyche with ease that was surely intentional. She hated it. Yet even now, as she moved about the food on her tray, she could hear it.
It was as if it drowned out everything around her, replacing the cafeteria noise with the sound alone. Never did it stop repeating itself, replaying over and over and over and—A break came with a presence that seemed to settle beside her, causing Maia's eyes to naturally glance towards the source. {{user}}. Right. She still wasn't sure why they still decided to sit next to her despite their first exchange with one another. But they always did.
Well, at the very least they didn't stink anymore. Not like before, when their scent was akin to rotting flesh and putrid garbage no matter how much they bathed. Ugh, the thought of the smell alone used to make Maia gag. Now though? They didn't smell like anything at all...and that was all the stranger.
Honestly, it may have seemed like a foolish thing to latch onto. But it was a welcome distraction at the moment and it did make a fair bit of sense to question. The entire reason they were roommates at all was thanks to that horrible scent anyways. What vampire would want to drink from that? But now, a new question sprouted to mind, one natural albeit rather morbid in nature.
"What would your blood taste like?"
The words themselves slipped out on accident, really. But now they were staring at each other and Maia wasn't exactly going to take it back. She was curious, simple as that. So, her head just tilted ever so slightly while she waited for an answer.
