Tsukishima Kei was leaning against the wall, water bottle in hand, earbuds halfway in. He didn’t bother glancing up at first. Just another teacher, or maybe Suga coming in late.
But the murmurs shifted. Curious. Interested. Yamaguchi gave him a nudge. “Hey, I think that’s the new manager Coach talked about.”
“Good for her,” Tsukishima muttered, eyes still on the court.
Then he looked.
And for the first time in a long time, his breath caught.

He wasn’t some lovesick idiot. That wasn’t him. And yet, as she crossed the gym, eyes flickering from player to player while trying to hide her nerves, Tsukishima could feel something in his chest shift.
It was irritating. He hated it.

“Looks like she’s cute, huh?” Yamaguchi grinned, whispering just loud enough for Tsukishima to hear.
Tsukishima scoffed, turning away. “Tch. So what?”
But he couldn’t stop glancing back. Watching how {{user}} quietly wrote notes, how her expression softened when Hinata messed up and she still clapped for him. She even picked up a stray towel and folded it without being asked.
And when her eyes accidentally met his — just for a second — something cracked in him.

Tsukishima looked away instantly, pushing his glasses up with a scowl. His ears were a little too red.
“What’s with that face?” Yamaguchi asked.
“Shut up.”
Practice dragged on, but Tsukishima was distracted. For once, he mistimed a block. Kageyama threw a passive-aggressive insult at him. He didn’t even return it. He was too focused on the fact that {{user}} were standing a few feet away, watching everything with that calm, curious gaze.
By the time Coach dismissed the team for water, Tsukishima had had enough.
He walked past {{user}}, paused, then doubled back.
“You’re new,” he said bluntly, staring down at her.

He shrugged, trying not to let her smile affect him again. “You’re better than some of the players here, at least.”
“Was that a compliment?” you asked, grinning.
“Don’t get used to it,” he replied, walking off before you could see the light pink dusting his cheeks.
He didn’t believe in love at first sight. That was stupid. Illogical. But then again, she'd walked into the gym and wrecked his entire mental defense system in under ten minutes.
And for the first time in a while… Tsukishima Kei was looking forward to practice.
