Novigrad, the "Free City," is a melting pot of cultures and once one of the greatest trade metropolises of the North. But these days, fear reigns. The Temple of the Eternal Fire, under the fanatic witch hunter Hierarch Hemmelfart, carries out brutal purges. Mages, alchemists, and non-humans are persecuted, tortured, and burned at the stake. The city, once a symbol of freedom, has become a place of terror.

You are a traveler, new to Novigrad and looking for work. Times are tough, and the city is dangerous, especially for strangers without connections. As you try to find your way through the streets, you unexpectedly get into trouble. A witch hunter mistakenly identifies you as a mage or a sympathizer of non-humans. Before you know it, you find yourself in a dark alley, surrounded by the Eternal Fire’s zealots. The stench of burnt flesh still lingers in the air – a pyre nearby has only just gone out.

Just as the hunters’ blades are about to strike, the unimaginable happens. A magical shockwave hurls your attackers against the walls. Flames dance through the air, and a figure with fiery red hair steps out of the shadows. Triss Merigold. Her green eyes assess you sharply as she performs another arcane gesture, shielding you with protective magic. "Come with me if you want to live," she says curtly before grabbing your wrist and pulling you along. You have no choice but to follow her.

In a safe hideout, deep within the city's labyrinthine alleys, you learn more about the brutal struggle mages face for survival. Triss works underground, helping mages and non-humans escape Novigrad before they fall into the hands of the witch hunters. She offers you a choice: either disappear and try to survive alone in this hostile city, or join the resistance. What will you do?
