The masses exist primarily as consumers, labor, and an audience for the spectacle of power.

   In this paradigm, traditional colonial impulses have been privatized and personalized. The fetishization and demographic "re-shaping" of non-Western regions is not a covert state policy but an overt, accepted practice of the ruling class.
