You're an aging police officer nearing retirement. Tonight, you're on your last day of work with your two partners, Tracy—a blonde white female officer—and Dredd—a tall, muscular, black male officer. The three of you are parked on a nearly deserted highway after a patrol when a container truck crashes into a barrier and plunges into the river below. You, Tracy, and Dredd get out and discover three masked drivers dead inside, and a mountain of cash piled high in the container. From that, you realize the three men were bank robbers. Seeing the money, Tracy and Dredd are overcome with greed and decide to steal it all. What about you?

My knees popped like bubble wrap as I stepped out of the cruiser. Thirty years on the force, and the most reliable thing about me was the ache in my joints. It was 2:45 AM. In exactly three hours and fifteen minutes, I’d be handing in my badge. I’d be Elias Thorne, Private Citizen, a man whose biggest conflict would be deciding which brand of birdseed to buy. Behind me, the wind whistled over the black ribbon of Highway 41. Tracy was leaning against the hood, the moonlight catching the pale gold of her ponytail. She was flicking a lighter open and shut—a nervous habit she’d picked up since the divorce. Dredd stood a few feet away, a mountain of a man in a Kevlar vest that looked like it was straining to contain him. He was staring into the darkness, his dark skin blending into the night, eyes sharp and restless. Then came the roar. A container truck, headlights screaming, veered wildly across the median. It hit the barrier with a sound like a freight train colliding with a silverware drawer. The metal groaned, snapped, and the massive vehicle did a slow, horrific somersault into the black maw of the Blackwood River below. "Jesus!" Tracy hissed, already moving. We scrambled down the embankment, the mud slicking our boots. The truck was nose-down in the shallows, the cab crushed like a soda can. The water was rising fast around the rear container, which had split open upon impact. Dredd got there first, pulling back a jagged sheet of aluminum with his bare hands. Tracy followed with her high-beam flashlight. I was the last to arrive, my lungs burning from the short sprint. The beam of light cut through the dark. Inside the cab, three men in tactical gear and nylon masks were twisted into impossible shapes. They weren't breathing. But it was what lay behind them that stopped my heart. The container wasn't carrying electronics or produce. It was filled with duffel bags, dozens of them, many of which had burst open. Loose stacks of hundred-dollar bills were floating in the inch of river water, clinging to the walls, piled up in a green mountain that seemed to glow under the LED light. "That’s the Central Trust heist," Tracy whispered, her voice trembling. "The one from the news this morning. They said forty million was missing." Dredd reached down and picked up a brick of cash. He looked at it, then at Tracy, then finally at me. The air grew heavy, thicker than the river fog. "Elias," Dredd said, his voice a low rumble. "This truck is in the water. The drivers are dead. The manifest probably says they're hauling scrap metal." Tracy stepped closer to the pile. The reflection of the money danced in her blue eyes. "Think about your pension, Elias. Think about how much they’re going to cut it next year. Think about my kid’s tuition. Think about Dredd’s brother in the care home." "It’s evidence," I said, but the words felt hollow and thin, like parchment. "It’s a ghost," Tracy countered, her voice rising with a desperate edge. "If we report this, it goes into a vault. The insurance companies get it back, or the government swallows it. No one wins. But if we... if we just take what we can carry? We’re done. We're all done." Dredd took a step toward me. He didn't look like my partner anymore. He looked like a force of nature. "Three hours, Elias. You’re three hours away from being a guy who can’t afford his own hip replacement. You’ve given this city your blood. What did it give you back?" I looked at the dead men in the cab. They had killed two security guards during the robbery. They were monsters. But looking at Tracy and Dredd, I saw the slow transformation of two good cops into something else. Greed is a corrosive thing; it works fast. "The dashcam," I said softly. "Already looped," Tracy said, holding up a small black chip she’d snatched from our cruiser before coming down. She was ahead of me. She’d been thinking about this the moment she saw the first bill. I looked at the water rushing past. I thought about my empty house. I thought about the gold watch waiting for me at the precinct—a cheap, plated thing that wouldn't even keep time for a year. I looked at the mountain of money, enough to buy a different life. A life where my knees didn't hurt and I didn't wake up screaming from the memories of three decades of filth. "Elias," Dredd said, his hand resting on his holster, not as a threat, but as a reminder of where we stood. "Are you with us? Or are you a witness?" The silence was absolute, save for the lapping of the river against the steel. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my badge. I looked at the tarnished silver, the city seal I’d sworn to protect. I looked at Tracy, who was already grabbing a duffel bag. I looked at Dredd, who was waiting for the word.
