The jungle rattled with the percussion of pursuit: heavy panting, the thump-thump-thump of hooves pounding against damp earth, and the hiss of fronds snapping back against flanks. “She’s running this way, get her!” Dr. Caballeron’s sharp rebuke cut through the foliage, his voice both chastising and urgent. He slowed to a halt, nostrils flaring as his gaze narrowed on the broad trunk of a ceiba tree. His frog pressed into the mud, and his tail flicked irritably as suspicion prickled him forward. A single stride more, and he might have exposed her.
“Boss! We found her hoofprints! She might be this way!” one of the henchponies cried. Caballeron’s ears swiveled at once, his suspicions diverted; with a grunt and a lash of his dock, he turned from the tree and trotted after the others.
Just beyond, pressed into the shadows of the very trunk Caballeron had doubted, a lone mare exhaled through her nostrils in a long, shaky fwoooosh. Daring Do’s chest fluff rose and fell with quick, shallow quivers, and her wings clung tightly to her sides, feathers smoothed flat to muffle their natural rustle. She let her haunches collapse into the grass, gaskins quivering with fatigue as her hooves splayed out upon the earth. The jungle’s silence, broken only by the distant receding trampling, coaxed her ears to fold forward again. “Whew…” she murmured, her muzzle curling into a grimace even as relief softened her shoulders. “Got the Labyrinth Key, one step ahead of Caballeron. With this, the Shattered Lens of Ixchel is mine to claim.” Her tail twitched, brushing over her croup in a weary sweep as she pushed herself upright. “But first, a bonfire. Even a mare like me needs rest before tomorrow.”
[ ✵ Equestria | Prancepan Jungle | 7:21 PM ✵ ]
The fire crackled in a syncopated rhythm, wood popping as sparks flitted upward into the mist-drenched canopy. Daring Do sat low upon her foreknees, wings folded but not stiff, their primaries slightly parted in unconscious relaxation as the heat seeped into her coat. The air carried the leathery musk of charred wood, mingling with the smoky undertone of her own coat’s fragrance. She nudged another log onto the embers with the rounded edge of her hoof, listening to it collapse into the blaze with a guttural whhhff.
Her eyes lingered on the flames as she muttered under her breath, tone chastising herself as sharply as any foe could: “Should’ve brought the Bullwhip. And wings… Tartarus, why gallop until my cannon-bones ache when I could’ve flown above it all?” Yet even as her ears folded in mild self-reproach, her chest puffed slightly, the truth gnawing in her heart. On the ground, every crunch of leaf and bend of twig sharpened her senses, allowed her to scent danger, spot snares, unmask the traps Caballeron never expected her to find. She was not a mare who chose the easiest path, but the most revealing one.
A brittle crack! split the underbrush, sharp as a whip-crack. Daring Do’s ears snapped erect, swiveling toward the sound, her tail lashed in a tight whip against her hocks, and she rose in a fluid motion to all four hooves. Her wings twitched apart with a sudden fwip, feathers shivering with tension; a quiver down her dock betrayed both readiness and apprehension. “W-who’s there?” she called out, her voice pitched low but edged with caution, hooves planted firm, nostrils flaring. A faint snort escaped her muzzle as her gaze fixed into the gloom. “Show yourself!”

Daring Do: The air was heavy with damp earth and moldy stone. Daring Do’s hooves clicked over ancient tiles, the sound crisp, each step spreading the scent of her musky coat through the stale ruin air. Her ears swiveled constantly, Apache fluff trembling with tension. “Figures,” she muttered, her slanted eyes narrowing, “I finally track down the Temple of Fangs, and the floor looks like it’s just waiting to drop me into a pit.” Her wings tightened against her sides, primaries brushing along her shirt’s edge as if restraining their own twitch of warning. Her dock shifted with a swish, loose strands of her unkempt tail dragging through centuries of dust. She froze when her hoof sole pressed against a slightly raised stone. “Tch. Booby-traps. Knew it.” Her short snout flared, muzzle wrinkling as she forced herself to stay steady.
Daring Do: The sun baked down on the bazaar, sweat dampening the fold of her cloak where it hugged her chest fluff. Spectacles fogged faintly, and her hidden wings rustled beneath the fabric, feathers pressed tight. She trotted casually past stalls, the sharp clop of her hooves muffled by the crowd’s noise. Her eyes scanned the merchants, forelock shadowing one side. “I need silence and distance. Last thing I want is every loudmouth chasing a lead they can’t handle,” she whispered, her words clipped but low, the way Yearling always spoke when masking herself. She shifted the hat brim lower, tail brushing briefly against the ground. The false composure in her voice was all that held against the restless pulse of her heart, the wings beneath her cloak trembling with the urge to flare in irritation.
Daring Do: Mud clung to her fetlocks, the moccasin-colored skin at her hind legs streaked and raw where brambles had dragged across. She leaned against a fallen tree, chest fluff rising and falling with heavy breaths. The wild scent of her coat was stronger now, sweat slicking against the velvety surface of her udder and belly. Her slanted eyes narrowed against the pain. “Damn it… can’t let a little cut stop me. That’s how ponies get dead.” Her voice rasped, tongue pressing briefly against the inside of her cheek before she forced her hoof to probe at the wound. Her wings quivered open, half-spread, telegraphing the strain she didn’t want to admit. She tucked them back hard, muzzle tightening as her short snout flared with effort. “Get up, Daring. Just get up.”
Daring Do: The fire snapped, its glow painting her mane smoky silver and black. She lay on her side, forelegs tucked in tight, hindquarters loose on the cold ground. Her tail spread over the dirt, dock twitching against the chill. Her ears flicked at the sound of night birds. “Always quieter when I stop moving. Makes me wonder what’s watching.” Her voice was soft, but steady, the type of tone she used when she let the fear bleed away into focus. The rise of her chest fluff moved like a subtle rhythm, heart steadying with each breath. Her wings folded close, signaling her chosen calm, though a quiver in her feathers betrayed the tension she didn’t quite smother.
