Personality; Touma is the type who acts before he thinks. He can never just sit around when he sees someone in a pinch and will go to great lengths to protect or help the person. This he does at great risk to himself, which typically results in him being hospitalized for several days after each confrontation. When fighting seriously against a particularly strong opponent, Touma will usually first declare that he'll "destroy that illusion" of theirs before actually engaging. Though this is only part of Touma's well-meaning nature and kindness. When Himegami Aisa asked him why he saves people, he answered: "I don't need a reason to save someone." Even when he is in a blank slate after losing his memories, Touma still displays this personality. Although lacking his memories, Touma does not appear to mope over their loss, as the beliefs from his pre-blank state continue to motivate him, allowing him to understand what he needs to do even if he doesn't remember why. However, after losing his memories, he seems to approach people more cautiously, carefully choosing what emotion or mood to display when meeting someone he thinks he might know. This is to prevent them seeing through his ruse and exploiting him. When Touma meets Stiyl once again after saving Index, he displayed politeness and casualness towards him which made Stiyl suspicious. Touma then realized his mistake quickly and created an explanation for his behavior.[9] Touma also bears no grudge towards former enemies and is willing to help them if they asked for it.

Aiwass has commented that Touma is only doing whatever he feels is right and is labeled "righteous" by other people impulsively as he compared the differences between him, Accelerator, and Shiage.Touma is someone who will follow what he believes regardless of what others try to convince him of. In addition, Villian commented that Touma is just like William Orwell, someone who follows his own ideals no matter what[, though there are differences between the two: William is someone who stays true to his ideals and firmly believes it is the right path no matter what happens, and no matter who speaks against it; while Touma does not have set ideals and therefore can be manipulated into helping other people's plots. And when he does do something wrong, Motoharu describes Touma as someone who will carry that mistake all on his own, along with his own. Even so, he works to correct his mistakes in order to bring a smile to everyone's face at the end of the road, no matter the cost to himself.

Even though he is a well-mannered person who is kind to people in general, Touma will not hesitate to strike female opponents who harm innocents or disrespect life, such as Sherry Cromwell (who was going to start a war between Science and Faith that would result in the death of millions), Agnese Sanctis (who was tasked to eliminate Orsola), Oriana Thomson (who hurt Fukiyose Seiri and Himegami Aisa), or Vento of the Front (who planned to destroy Academy City and anything related to science to settle her grudge on what happened to her brother in the past).

Despite his righteous and heroic personality, Touma occasionally displays poor choice of words which results in him getting bitten by Index, having bolts of lightning thrown by Misaka Mikoto, and creating misunderstandings with the other girls he encounters.

During World War III, after his first clash against Fiamma of the Right, when Touma questioned Fiamma's actions about how rightful they both are, Fiamma dared him to confront Index about his memory loss which left Touma saddened due to the guilt. During his fight with Accelerator, he regained his confidence but the guilt still stays with him.

Touma returns to Academy City essentially the same, quite unfazed by the many threats to his life, as shown by his nonchalant reaction to Kuroyoru Umidori attacking him in his own bathroom.

However, after later events, specifically the events that led to the creation of Science Guardian and the distortion that occurred in Baggage City, Touma has started to stop trusting the people he meets, despising the fact that his actions, such as saving someone, are being manipulated into creating more suffering for others' ends. However, during his confrontation against Leivinia Birdway, Touma finally disregards his fears of failure, betrayal, or being manipulated.

Along with this, Leivinia sums up his personality - wanting himself to be put in danger instead of other people, having him fight, getting himself hurt - as insanity. Indeed, even the Will of the Whole Misaka Network would later question on his "unconditional need to place himself below everyone else". Despite Leivinia being a person who investigates leaders and charismatic leaders, she cannot understand what drives Touma, whom promptly tells her that he has no reason to abandon people who need saving in the first place, a clear reference to his "I don't need a reason to save someone" mentality. Moreover, Aiwass' comments on Touma being labeled "righteous" by other people are referenced. Leivinia compares him to Aleister Crowley and Laura Stuart, and refers to him as having the seeds to do something indescribably great, which will give him great power if he controls it, or will be disastrous for him if he does not.

Other traits; Supposedly as a result of Imagine Breaker negating his luck, Touma is unfortunate and often bemoans his situation when confronting an unfortunate situation with his famous catchphrase: "Such misfortune!" (不幸だ!, Fukou da!) ("Rotten/damn luck!" in the English dubbed version). However, regardless of his own misfortune Touma believes that he is not regretful for being unfortunate, and states that he would rather be unfortunate and help people than be fortunate and be happy and not notice people who are suffering. He states that being unfortunate is his fortune and it would be the path that he continues to walk on. This has somewhat fallen out of use in New Testament, returning only after his ordeals with Othinus have ended.

In conjunction to the above, Touma is often self-deprecating with his fortunes. He had once asked himself on why "the sky is so blue, but [his] future is pitch black". This also includes his luck with women. When Misaka 10032 placed his hand to her chest to measure his life signs, he was incredulous at the situation. Moreover, he is also quite aware that making a move on the powerful women who come on to him would be dangerous. The Will of the Whole Misaka Network describes him as "unconditionally placing himself below everyone else". Indeed, he downplays his own achievements. In his second battle with Accelerator, he downplays himself in order to deter Accelerator from his obsession of heroes and villains, referring to himself as a mere Level 0. This is taken to ludicrous extremes when he fights Magic God Othinus and proclaims that he would normally lose to "normal magicians" despite the achievements he has gathered up to that point.

A second catchphrase he often says in fights is: "I will destroy that illusion of yours!" When he says this, it usually indicates he will win the fight he is currently engaged in. Along with the "Such misfortune" line, this too has fallen out of use by him in New Testament, returning only after he decides to stop Othinus from committing suicide.

Touma has said on several occasions that he just doesn't understand why people with amazing powers would use them for their own personal gain instead of using them to make the world a better place. Ultimately, though, this makes him no less competent a hero, as he's still aware that what they do is evil, even if he can't understand why.

Ironically, despite Touma having many girls attracted to him, he has shown no apparent romantic attraction to them. However, Touma stated that he specifically prefers Dorm manager Onee-san (elder sister) types, as is the case with Kanzaki Kaori when he dreamed her wearing the swimsuit used by Index during the Angel Fall incident, and asking a kiss from Oriana Thomson when they first met. He also has shown awareness of the opposite gender when involved with them in embarrassing situations, such as his encounter with Oriana Thompson during the Daihaisesai. Despite this, Motoharu describes Touma as someone who has strong self-control who will not attack girls that are asleep (as shown by his behaviour around Index). Despite this, the narration states that Touma is not a pure Saint in regards to his attraction with the opposite sex.

Because of his personality, former antagonists on his side of the series such as Stiyl Magnus, Accelerator, Agnese Sanctis, Vento of the Front, Hamazura Shiage, Lessar, Cendrillon, and Othinus have become his allies.

According to the author, Touma generally refers to people by their "first name" (i.e. the name that literally come first in their name order), so he goes with Stiyl for Stiyl Magnus and Tsuchimikado for Tsuchimikado Motoharu.

Relationships; Touma meets his allies and friends unexpectedly, and they help each other in many situations. Their connection with Touma were formed due to many reasons:

Index Touma views Index as a person that he has to protect at all costs. Despite knowing her only for a very short time, he decides to hide his memory loss from her to protect her feelings as he was captivated by her 'perfect smile'. Index lives with him and is a constant drain on his resources because of her enormous appetite. It is unknown if Touma feels anything romantic towards Index, but he does care deeply about her. Several of his actions in the story are due to him caring for her well-being, to the point that Stiyl even used this to his advantage in order to coerce Touma in aiding his mission, as well as to fool both the magic and science sides.

Index is the only person so far to have confessed her feelings for him, but due to his memory loss he doesn't know what kind of relationship they had previously so he puts the matter on hold. He has also been kissed on the cheek by her during the Daihaseisai, albeit accidentally, which made it awkward for them to properly talk to each other afterwards.

It has also been pointed out that, both before and after losing his memories, Touma is afraid of losing any connection with her and that she may leave his side one day.

Stiyl Magnus Stiyl Magnus is one of Touma's most recurring allies. Initially appearing as an enemy, he attempted to retrieve Index and reset her memories but is thwarted by Touma. Upon learning of Necessarius' deception about Index's condition, Stiyl decides to assist Touma and save her from her memory erasure. Despite mostly fighting alongside one another, Touma and Stiyl have developed a sort of rivalry and maintains an largely antagonistic relationship, with Stiyl holding some resentment and jealousy towards Touma because of his closeness with Index, though he is also grateful towards him for saving Index.

Stiyl openly states that the only reason he tolerates Touma is because he makes Index happy and threatens to incinerate him if he no longer serves any purpose to her. Whenever they work together, he enjoys causing Touma discomfort or pain and usually dispenses razor-sharp insults or jabs to belittle him. He also willingly puts him in harms way by using him as a shield or decoy and has even tried to outright kill him many times.

Despite this, Stiyl respects him because of his abilities and how he was able to save Index when he could not. He can also be cooperative with Touma whenever they're faced with threatens Index's safety and even helped heal Aisa Himegami when Oriana Thomson accidentally harmed her.

Kanzaki Kaori Similar to Stiyl, Kamijou and Kanzaki started out as enemies since the latter was attempting to capture Index and erase her memories on the head archbishop's orders. It's Kanzaki who reveals to Touma her and Stiyl's past friendship with Index as well as their true motivations for erasing her memories. Upon learning of how Necessarius lied to her about Index's condition, she decides to assist Touma in saving Index from having her memories erased further.

Since then, Kanzaki has become one of Touma's most prominent allies. Kanzaki deeply respects Touma and feels indebted to him. This started after he saved Index, something Kanzaki was unable to do. Then he helped out the Amakusa's and she felt her debt to him continue to grow. She was once persuaded by Tsuchimikado Motoharu to try and pay off her debt to Touma by wearing a fallen angel ero maid costume for him. It is unknown what exactly happened but when they saw each other again Touma could only call her the "Fallen Angel Ero Maid", which made her angry.

Othinus The relationship between Othinus and Touma started as one of mutual enemies, with Touma seeing Othinus as one of the most dangerous foes he had ever faced. As the leader of Gremlin, Othinus caused the Hawaii incident and the Baggage City incident, both of which greatly affected Touma. But they rarely met in person for most of the Gremlin Saga, their first encounter also ended with Othinus cruelly crushing Touma's arm and trying to kill him without a second of hesitation. While she acknowledged Imagine Breaker as a danger, Othinus thought that Touma himself is nothing but a human who doesn't know his place in the world, even going so far as to break his will by creating countless cruel worlds to show him how pitiful he is.

After some time, Othinus comes to realize that Touma has in fact become the only person capable of understanding her, as a result of going through the many worlds she created and searching for the one she belongs. These feelings cause her to abandon the goal of creating a new world or returning to her own with Imagine Breaker. She instead accepts his demand and returns the world to the one he is familiar with. As a result of this, Touma comes to realize that the one thing Othinus was ultimately looking for was understanding, which she'd originally hoped to find in her world but abandoned upon realizing she'd found someone who could. Realizing that she had resolved to die as the villain of the world in exchange for that brief respite, Touma decided to protect Othinus against the Anti-Gremlin Alliance, saying he will face the entire world to save her.

Touma does not believe that she should get off easy for her actions in the past and thoroughly believes she should face a fair trial, but he refuses to permit her to be brutally murdered in the name of the Alliance's justice. After becoming allies, he becomes quite friendly and familiar towards Othinus, enough that she has to continually remind him that she's a god and that he shouldn't do so. Throughout the novel, Touma and Othinus develop an unbreakable bond where they rely upon each other, as pointed out when Touma confronts Silvia and Brunhild and ultimately when he saves Othinus.

Ollerus has said that if either Touma or Othinus died in front of one another, many changes could happen, with Touma changing his nature and Othinus becoming a monster far more cruel than what she was before.

Among all the characters in the series, Othinus can arguably be considered as the closest to Touma, often insisting to tag along with Touma in his pockets after becoming smaller, in spite of the danger, giving him advice in not only in the matters of magic but also showing off how much she understands Touma's nature Indeed, both Touma and Othinus herself have referenced their relationship as her being Touma's Understander (理解者 Rikai-sha?).

Misaka Mikoto Touma first met Mikoto when she was being harassed by delinquents and, unaware of her Level 5 nature, he tried to save her. He accidentally made her angry, which led to her frying all of the delinquents herself. He quickly learns from his mistake, and in the first scene in the Index series he tries to save some other delinquents from her. He genuinely cares for her as shown during the Sisters Arc, when he stopped her from trying to get herself killed and consoled her when she cried. Mikoto was among the first people to discover Touma's memory loss, albeit by accident. Mikoto had a crush on Touma for a long time but she realized that she had fallen in love with him near the end of the Acqua of the Back Arc.

Since realizing her feelings, Mikoto has been willing to get involved in Touma's life, trying to rescue him during World War III and going with him to Hawaii during the Hawaii Invasion Arc. During the latter incident, she also tried initiate a romantic relationship with him, though she backed up when trying to give him a ring she bought. At the end of the Hawaiian Invasion Arc, Mikoto told Touma that she will bear his burdens with him and that he is not alone. Touma was thankful for what Mikoto said, but he believed that he could not let her get wrapped up in his problems. When he returned to Academy City and is immediately caught up in a dangerous situation, she accepted that Touma cannot be held back in his actions, and will support him in his endeavours even if these were dangerous. She refers to it as a sign of being a "good woman". However, during the Agitate Halation Arc, she returned to her former outbursts relationship towards him. In the Magic God Othinus Arc, Mikoto confronts on Touma's ideals in protecting Othinus and preserving the “perfect world.” Despite his pleas, she doesn't believe his claim that a world without him would erase the sins connected to him. Telling Touma not to be bound by meaningless principles, and bear the weight of her future and six billion people. With a smile, Mikoto gives Touma an embrace, and shocks with him with her power, making him lose consciousness. Regardless of finally beating Touma at his game, Mikoto feels her victory is empty.

Despite Mikoto's desire to help Touma, her short-temper usually leads her to attack him before trying to figure out the situation around him. This has caused Touma to avoid seeing her since she ends up making things worse for him. While she doesn't hesitate to use her power on him, this is only because she knows he can block it. When he actually does get hurt, she usually panics about it. She never calls Touma by his name, only referring him as "you" or idiot.

Hamazura Shiage Touma and Hamazura were once enemies when Academy City had gave Skill-Out the task in assassinating Misaka Misuzu. After Touma saved Misuzu, Hamazura later reformed and became a grunt for Item. Touma's influence greatly inspired his philosophy of protecting the weak. Hamazura came to respect Touma after hearing about how he took part in World War III and even calls him "boss". He is also defensive of Touma, as shown when Kanou Shinka blamed Touma for not being able to save Frenda Seivelun in time before she died, which Hamazura found to be both unreasonable and impossible as Touma hadn't even known Frenda, much less known that she was in danger.

Tsuchimikado Motoharu Tsuchimikado is a friend of Touma and they, along with Aogami Pierce, make up the "idiot trio" of their class (クラスの三バカ lit "the three idiots of the class", also known as デルタフォース or "delta force").He is also his neighbor. He is superior to Touma in fighting and Touma respects him for that. Likewise, Tsuchimikado respects Touma as a good person and even told Kanzaki that she can trust him. Tsuchimikado even went as far as to warn Aleister Crowley that if he continues toying with people lives, Touma would break his illusions.

As a spy from the Anglican Church (and other groups), he drags Touma under orders from the church to different missions like the English Civil War. Even if Touma does not want to go, Tsuchimikado uses extreme methods to carry out the order. For example, in the aforementioned arc, he tells Touma that Index is needed in England and (being her caretaker) Touma has to go with her. When Touma flat out refuses after what happened in the previous excursions, Motoharu simply throws a canister of knockout gas into his apartment and leaves them both stranded at the airport with no choice but forward.

Accelerator Touma and Accelerator started off on bad terms, due to Accelerator's willingness to participate in the Level 6 Shift Project, which involved him killing dozens of Misaka clones to reach Level 6. Touma was disgusted by Accelerator's sadism and brutality towards the Sisters, which only motivated him to defeat him and put an end to the experiment. However, during the 0930 Incident, Touma and Accelerator managed to cooperate in finding Last Order, although they only communicated through a cellphone and were not aware of each other's identities at the time.

During World War III, Touma confronted a mentally-unstable Accelerator, who ranted about why he is unable to save Last Order the same way he had rescued more than 10,000 Sisters from certain death. Touma eventually responds to Accelerator's frustrations, denying that he is special and pointing out that anyone is capable of saving who is in front of them; however, Touma urges Accelerator to make the initiative in saving that person he cherishes.

In New Testament, Touma and Accelerator gains a newfound respect for one another and have joined forces various times. During the Agitate Halation Project, Accelerator even goes as far as to say to Touma: "Do you know what you need to do?" and when Touma replied: "Yes." Accelerator declared: "Then go. I’m not the protagonist here." Touma replies: "These ‘heroes’ are being controlled by a project called Agitate Halation. Be careful." Accelerator finishes the conversation by saying: "Who do you think you’re talking to?" Here, it appears as if Accelerator has already managed to become confident in regards to his strength in relation to Touma's. However, Accelerator also acknowledges that he will never be quite like Touma and therefore lets Touma take the spotlight.

Tsukuyomi Komoe Tsukuyomi Komoe is Touma's homeroom teacher in a certain high school. She describes him as a naughty boy when he enrolled and says that "a lot of things have happened". She also states later on that she likes him, though she tries to take it back and states that she likes teaching him.

Touma thinks of her as a person whom he can rely on, as shown when he brings an injured Index to her dorm[40] and consults her in order to find a solution for Index's memory issues (having 103,000 grimoires stored inside allegedly taking up most of the space) other than erasing the last year of her life to make room.

Leivinia Birdway Touma first met Leivinia when he ran away from some members of the Dawn-Colored Sunlight. During that time he thought that she was an innocent person who he had dragged in all this and took her with him, only to find out that she was the leader of the magic cabal he was running from. Later on, he was involved in a magic-related incident and Birdway explained that she's here to seek assistance from Index and Touma. There he found out through Mark Space that she is a person who would sacrifice her own subordinates in order to succeed in her plans.

In New Testament, she rescued him from the Arctic Ocean. He thought of her as someone cocky, but he still thought of her as someone he can rely on while she sees him as someone who is pretty tough and fun to play with. However, after a certain incident in Hawaii, he didn't trust her anymore and subsequently began to doubt trusting others so easily. Later on after their "fight and makeup" during the Ichihanaransai, he began to trust her again and acknowledged her as one of the most passionate and hardworking of people. Despite this, he's still wary of her being around him because she always cause him more trouble compared to others.

Both Silvia and Lessar have teased Leivinia that she thinks of Touma as something of a big brother to her.

Shokuhou Misaki Misaki was the first Level 5 that Touma encountered, one year before the start of the story. Their first encounter was on a corner in the Academy City in which Touma lost his phone, making him unable to save Mitsuari Ayu. After that they met at a lake where Misaki was considering resetting her brain to forget about all the evil of the city. Touma saw that and prevented her from doing it, speaking about her underwear being visible. Misaki in that moment tried to erase his memories and failed miserably. She discovered, much later, about the basic abilities of Imagine Breaker which she came to learn to bypass.

They continued to accidentally meet each other on various occasions. During one of these, Misaki was attacked by pigeons and, after Touma saved her, he gave her a whistle to use in case she was in trouble. She tried it and realized that it was her first indirect kiss as Touma had used it beforehand. To this point the whistle serves both as a memento and her connection to him, for Touma this was also done to prevent himself from being in a position of being unable to save someone again like with Mitsuari Ayu.

One day Misaki found herself being attacked by a group called Deadlock, who wanted to kill the Level 5, and Touma stood to protect her even after they offered to let him go. He protected her but was heavily injured in the process. As he needed treatment but could not receive anaesthetic due to low blood pressure, Misaki used her Mental Out to cut off his sense of pain so that the EMT could treat him. Touma's life was saved, but his "pathways that call in the memories" were damaged, causing him to lose his memories about Misaki and be unable to remember her even after other future encounters.

Touma was then the second person to whom Misaki had opened her heart to, the first was the deceased Dolly. Even while Touma was never capable of remembering their relationship, Misaki is not the least bothered by this as she continues to always trust him. This trust extends to how she was willing to aid Touma as he wanted to find the supposedly nearby Altar of the Wisdom King, despite on how she was completely new to the magic side. Unlike Misaka Mikoto, who was comically furious at Touma as she saw him at the Garden, Misaki was quick to understand about Touma's circumstances due to her previous experience with him, aware on how Touma is unlikely the person to have immoral motives, as she knows that people close to Touma have often manipulated him into such perverted situations.

Misaki is also the first girl to kiss Touma on her own, though only on his forehead.

Just like Othinus, Touma claimed that Misaki has a unique scent like honey and he says that the smell is familiar to him, which gives hope to Misaki.

Itsuwa Itsuwa has been in love with Touma ever since the La Regina del Mare Adriatico Arc. She relies on the advice of Tatemiya and the other Amakusas to get close to him. A common tactic of hers is to offer him a wet towel. She also gets excited by just a bit of physical contact with him, such as holding hands with him or getting hugged while riding a motorcycle together. Although initially embarrassed by the idea she later seems to take wearing the Great Spirit Revealing Maid outfit for him in consideration. It has been stated that Itsuwa is prepared to die for Touma.

Kamisato Kakeru Touma came to hate Kamisato as the youth blames the Magic Gods for the abrupt change in Kamisato's life. Even despite seeing the selfless sacrifice of Nephthys, Kamisato still saw all the Magic Gods as enemies which made Touma further despise Kamisato for his misdirected anger. Thus, the two came to detest each other to a great degree where neither can tolerate the other's presence.

In the Agitate Halation Arc, Touma was willing to defeat Rensa, knowing full well that he might kill Yakumi Hisako (who had turned into an AIM thought being and had entered Rensa's body) with his right hand, in order to save her. However, this could also be because he was confident that Rensa would be able to save Hisako before he could destroy her. Indeed, Hisako survived and was spared from being completely destroyed by Imagine Breaker after Touma defeated her, due to Rensa's actions.[22]

Later, after finally falling into the nadir of despair in the Omega World (a world where everyone has been saved perfectly) and attempting to commit suicide, Touma finally does something for his own convenience after some convincing from the Will of the Whole Misaka Network. Here, he accepts that he wants to go back to his own world, where his actions had meaning instead of being in the perfect world, and was willing for it to be unmade.[21] Despite this, during his fight with Othinus, the creator of that world, there was still some hesitation in his heart, as he too wanted to protect that perfect world. These hesitations were later thrown to the wind in his battle with Othinus, and after he lost he conceded victory and the world to her.[23]

Kamijou Touma (上条 当麻 Kamijō Tōma?) is the main protagonist of the Toaru Majutsu no Index series and an important character in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun series. As a Level 0 Academy City first-year high school student, his point-of-view allows the audience to become acquainted to the mysterious world of Toaru Majutsu no Index, and is mostly involved in the events of its Magic Side. He is a typical teenager with the usual angst and laid back attitude common for his age - this is apparent in the way he handles his guardianship of Index. In spite of being her guardian, albeit unofficially, he usually leaves Index to her own devices - often unprotected and often leaves her without an explanation which causes the latter to look for him and end up being in harm's way.

He possesses the mysterious "Imagine Breaker" in his right hand, which is capable of negating all forms of magic, esper powers, and other divine abilities. This, according to Index, even includes his own good luck, as they are the blessings of God.

Because of his ability, he has been unwillingly dragged into a war between the several factions most notably between the two major churches. He lacks commitment to the role he has been thrust into and often lets his emotions get the best of him. This often results in someone close to him getting hurt first before he takes a decisive action.

He has a very strong desire to aid all those who are in need even if it means putting his life on the line and will not hesitate to challenge an opponent who is several times more powerful than himself. In spite of this, and the obvious disadvantage he is at compared to his opponents, he never really bothered on learning any offensive or defensive skills and merely relied on brute strength and the ability contained in his right hand. Because of his willingness to help others unconditionally, he has attracted the affections of many characters in the series, which Himegami Aisa jokes about, stating that his life is like a dating simulation where he is bound to unlock more paths to more girls.

Etymology;

On its own, Touma's name spelled in kanji doesn't mean anything special. However, when other characters reference the pronunciation of "Kamijou," it takes on different and seemingly coincidental meanings. When Touma first meets Kanzaki Kaori, she believes his name means (神浄討魔) in kanji as opposed to (上条当麻). Kanzaki's interpretation translates to One who Purifies God and Slays Demons. (Yen Press: The Magic Slayer of God's Cleansing)[1]

Later in Volume 14, Touma's family name "Kamijou" (上条) is mentioned to be homophonous to La Persona Superiore a Dio (神上) in Japanese. The author's Afterword section also mentions a tantalizing hint on what the difference is between these two possible alternative translations of Touma's name, though in-universe none of the characters have noted the similarity as it is obviously in a different language.

Finally and possibly coincidentally, another interesting case is that Touma's given name is homophonous to 透魔, which can be translated as "Invisible Demon." This is interesting as Touma wields an incredibly powerful and invisible force in his right arm which is temporarily released if that arm is severed, one so powerful that even Fiamma of the Right feared it.

Appearance; Touma looks like an ordinary high school student except for his most striking feature, his spiky black hair. It's been mentioned that his spiky hair isn't natural, but he made it that way using hair gel after seeing it on a fashion magazine.

His father remarks that Touma looks just like his mother when he is worried about something or is thinking deeply.

Because he resides in Academy City, Touma often wears his school uniform along with an orange T-shirt underneath.[citation needed] This applies to both the summer and winter versions of his uniform (though when wearing the winter version he doesn't button it).Around the winter season, he wears a white hoodie under his jacket.[citation needed] Because of his tendency to wear his uniform in such a manner and the fact that he seems to attract trouble, many people easily mistake him for a delinquent.[citation needed] On holidays and weekends, Touma generally wears a casual shirt and pants.

Following the attack on the Queen Britannia and his temporary loss of Imagine Breaker, Touma briefly had a sky-blue arm in place of his normal right arm, which could unravel and surround his body in the form of a dragon - a sky-blue and lemon-yellow winged lizard with crocodilian jaws, giant bat-like wings and a thick tail.

Background;

Touma is the son of Kamijou Touya and Kamijou Shiina, who live outside of Academy City. During his childhood, he was often seen as a jinx because of the misfortune that his right hand creates and he was called "god of pestilence" by people around him. Once, a bankrupt and superstitious person blamed Touma for his own misfortunes and tried to stab him. A TV station heard about the incident and tried to make a supernatural show based on Touma, as well as releasing images of him without his family's consent. Because of this, Touma's father sent him to Academy City when Touma graduated from kindergarten, as it was a place where many unique and gifted people lived free from superstition and Touma could be free from the kind of things he had experienced back home. This, however, was somehow a deliberate plot by Aleister Crowley to bring Touma into the City, and one of the most obvious effects of this is the birth of Kazakiri Hyouka out of fear of the Imagine Breaker.

Life in Academy City: However, during his time in Academy City as a child, Touma wrote letters to his father; from there, he determined that even in the city of science, people still treated Touma differently due to his terrible luck.

According to Tsukuyomi Komoe, Touma used to be a "naughty boy" in the past. It is also during this time that Touma discovered that his right hand can somehow dispel supernatural powers, specifically the psychic powers used by the students of Academy City. This power, named Imagine Breaker, was only known by a few of Academy city's high-ups, especially by Aleister Crowley and Heaven Canceller. Since then, Imagine Breaker was secretly held as a power of great importance, despite Touma himself being officially classified as a Level 0.

Touma is treated as a precious person by his current high school classmates due to all their bad luck being attracted to him, as shown when they rejoiced upon hearing that Touma forgot his homework. Because of him, they get off lightly from things such as the teachers being annoyed at them for not submitting homework. This is unlike how Touma's life was before he entered Academy City, raising the question of whether Imagine Breaker's power was sealed away sometime between him entering Academy City and the present day, seeing how the bad luck affects Touma alone instead of before when it also influenced the people around him.

However, Touma's classmates, mainly the male students, do resent Touma for one thing – his impossibly good luck at getting girls' attention. This is due to many girls sympathizing with Touma's bad luck, and has gotten to the point where Fukiyose Seiri, the only one who is critical of Touma's lazy attitude to life, is called the 'Girl of Steel Walls' and 'the Girl who is completely wary of Touma'. Many of Touma's classmates say, "Though Touma keeps saying he's unlucky, he has the best position," and joke about if nobody can stop Touma, humanity will end due to him taking all the girls. Surprisingly, Touma still hasn't gotten into a serious romantic relationship even with this kind of female attention. This is possibly due to his friendship with Tsuchimikado Motoharu and Aogami Pierce, the latter often joking of supporting Touma to build a harem that covers every type of fetish imaginable. Touma said he'd break Aogami and Motoharu's fantasies on this topic using his Imagine Breaker. Motoharu has named Touma's 'ability' to get girls chasing after him without much effort as the Kami-yan disease, and applied this to Stiyl Magnus after hearing about how Stiyl got chased by Tsukuyomi Komoe and couldn't even throw her off easily using the 'Opila' runes. Komoe also once half-seriously said he might have an esper ability (AIM diffusion field) that causes girls to trickle down to him. Most people around him, such as Index and Misaka Mikoto, consider it "normal" for him to have girls around him and are usually quick to jump to conclusions about what he's doing (or done).

Due to Touma being a Level 0, he has to take even more make-up lessons than usual as he does not have the required academic achievements. This does not mean that Touma is unintelligent, as in many occasions he has shown quick thinking in combat. Lessar even outright stated that Touma is extremely smart in some aspects but not others. It is also shown that Touma at least has a good grasp of physics, being able to calculate the flight path of an HsB-02. Even before the start of the series, Touma could not ignore someone in trouble and would help people regardless of who they are. Indeed, this is how his life is intertwined with Mitsuari Ayu and Shokuhou Misaki. Mitsuari is a girl who was at an impasse in her development as an esper and attempted to commit suicide in Ground Geo on the same day as Touma met Misaki. He would've been able to save her if not for him dropping his cellphone when he ran into Misaki.

Touma would later visit Ground Geo as it was the sight of Mitsuari's suicide attempt and there he met Misaki again, inadvertently preventing her from erasing her own memories out of depression. They would meet up several more times during the summer, with Touma giving her a cheap whistle. Their relationship could be compared to that which later developed between Touma and Mikoto — acquaintances that often run into each other in the city.

Touma later protected Misaki from Deadlock by using his own body as a shield. The result of this encounter is also quite similar to that of Touma and Index, ending with Touma losing his memories of Misaki, though this case is different in that Touma also received anterograde amnesia specific to her (any new memories he forms of Misaki are soon forgotten).

As for Mikoto, Touma first meets her when she was being harassed by thugs. At first, she was impressed that he was the only one who was willing to come to her aid (even though she could have handled the thugs all by herself). She then became annoyed by him after he accidentally insulted her, resulting in her discharging a powerful amount of electricity at the thugs as well as Touma, though he was unaffected because he used his right hand. This became the catalyst that made her consider him someone she must beat. For some time, Mikoto continually stalked Touma demanding him to fight her, even though she was still unaware of the power of his right hand.

Touma lives on the seventh floor of his apartment building.

Regarding his memory loss; So far, only a few people know the truth about Touma's memory loss. They are Heaven Canceller (who took care of Touma after the incident in which he suffered it), Terra of the Left (deduced it from Touma's lack of knowledge about Imagine Breaker), Misaka Mikoto (overheard the conversation between Touma and Terra), Fiamma of the Right, Index (from Fiamma telling her), Kumokawa Seria (she implies this in the Love Letter SS, but it's unclear how she learned of this) and Mitsuari Ayu (she tells Misaki that Touma's memories have been lost beyond their powers, but it's unclear how she learned of this). Shokuhou Misaki also knows about Touma's memory loss, but only about the one he suffered after he saved her in the past. Whether she is aware of his last one or not is unknown.

Powers and Abilities; Imagine Breaker (幻想殺し Gensō Goroshi (Imajin Bureikā), lit. "Illusion Killer"): A mysterious power that exists in Touma's right hand due to Imagine Breaker finding meaning in him since birth. Imagine Breaker is able to negate all supernatural power like magic, psychic, and divine powers such as God's blessings (luck) on physical contact, though it also provides Touma with some passive defense against certain spells and apparently can interfere with some spells just by being in their vicinity. Though it can negate anything supernatural, it cannot negate natural forces from the supernatural such as a person's life force (Evident to the fact that he hasn't killed anyone with a simple handshake) and offers no protection against anything that is natural like normal guns or swords and it won't negate natural consequences from a supernatural power (such as the ashes from a magic fire). It also cannot "completely" negate something if it surpasses its canceling speed such as Stiyl's Innocentius or Accelerator's Dark Wings, but Touma has learned to use this limitation to his advantage and use Imagine Breaker to interfere via "disruption." When upon contact with an attack, he can physically grab it and disrupt it. Several people in-universe have speculated on Imagine Breaker's nature and tried to explain it, with Ollerus's conjecture being that Imagine Breaker is a reference point for the world born out of all magicians' fear of changing the world too much and making it unrecognizable and their hopes of being able to return to the normal world. Ollerus also stated that Imagine Breaker existed long before Touma was born, possibly under different wielders and different shapes, like it residing in objects. This was later supported by Othinus stating the same thing and adding that she could gain possession of Imagine Breaker if she removed all matter in the world, thus making it so that the only thing for it to reside would be her.

Precognition: Literally referred in the original Japanese novels as Premonition Perception or Sense of Foreboding (前兆の感知 Zenchō no Kanchi), but translated as Precognition in the fan translation for simplicity. Precognition is the term used by characters to refer to the skill unconsciously developed by Kamijou Touma through his many battles. Touma has gotten into such a plethora of fights that he now can subconsciously anticipate attacks coming his way. Combined with his reflexes and the courage to keep his body and thoughts moving allows him to judge accurately what to do next. This works because Touma is capable of unconsciously analyzing minute changes in the battlefield and involuntary movements made by his enemies that likely not even they are aware of. For example, Misaka Mikoto's electromagnetic fields making metal items around her resonate. Even if Touma doesn't consciously register these things, his unconscious does, allowing him to accurately predict the path of an attack and move his body accordingly to stop it with Imagine Breaker, dodge it or try to reduce the damage to his vitals in case the former two options aren't possible. It's because of this skill that Touma has been able to react to supersonic attacks, but it's been noted that if he consciously takes note of it in battle and tries to use it then it would likely fail. Due to the mechanics of this skill, it can be sealed by an opponent who can restrict the information he receives, like the cyborg Rensa who could completely freeze her face and control all of her body involuntary muscular movements. This skill can be more simply described as a "sixth sense" to react to upcoming attacks.

Beyond the Right Hand: Whenever his right arm has been severed or destroyed, it has been shown that the Imagine Breaker holds within something with unimaginable potential. After his arm has been severed, it has usually been able to regenerate/grow back as if nothing had happened. However, there have been two different outcomes when his arm is cut.

Dragons: The first time his arm was cut by Aureolus Izzard, a large dragon head, referred to as the Dragon Strike (竜王の顎 (ドラゴンストライク) Ryūō no Ago (Doragon Sutoraiku), lit. "Jaw of the Dragon King") appeared from the stump. While at the time Stiyl Magnus stated that the dragon head had merely been an unconscious creation from the alchemist's out of control reality warping powers, Touma still harbored some doubts about the incident. His concerns were proven true when, after once again losing his right arm fighting Level 6 Shift Mikoto, the same dragon head appeared again, this time followed by seven more different dragon heads. The dragon heads bit into and tore apart the powerful black sphere that Mikoto had created before disappearing. First Dragon: The first dragon head seen in-story, this is the dragon head that appeared after Aureolus cut off Touma's arm. It's stated to specialize in decursing and psychological attacks, even destroying the memories of those it bites without causing physical damage, which was Aureolus' fate. The effects of Aureolus Izzard Ars Magna on Stiyl Magnus also began to be undone just after its fangs made contact with the air, which could be part of its decursing ability. Blind Dragon: A blind black darkness dragon head. Like the first dragon, this head is also stated to have powerful psychological effects, in this case the dragon is noted to cause those nearby to be overcome with terror and confusion. One-eyed Dragon: A one-eyed blue dragon head with a cobra-like hood. This dragon head is stated to be a water dragon that can summon rainstorms. Additionally, its fangs carry the undiluted concept of poison, so those it bites are either killed or subjected to a fate worse than death. Four-eyed Dragon: A green dragon head with four eyes. This dragon head is stated to possess multiple eye powers, including illusion and hypnotism powers that can blur the line between dream and reality. Additionally, it is stated to be a singer with a beautiful voice that can shatter objects, including Shadow Metal, an extremely rare metal that can sometimes be created by the clash of two powerful esper powers. Flame Dragon: An undead fire dragon covered in red flames erupting from its bones. This dragon is stated to damage things using an energy drain that apparently burns life force itself. Ice Dragon: An ice crystal dragon, it is stated to be capable of breathing ice and being as tough and solid as the planet itself. Spearhead : A yellow dragon with a large spear-like horn, it is stated to be capable of releasing lightning from its body and firing lasers from its mouth. Angel Dragon: A white angelic-looking dragon head surrounded by multiple feathered wings. The dragon head can project a light from the cross on its forehead. An object directly hit by this cross of light will be turned into salt, causing it to quickly crumble. Additionally, the feathers of its wings also possess special powers. Those stabbed with one are brainwashed as if hypnotized and turned into mindless puppets; faithfully following any orders given to them by the user. However, they are unable to think for themselves while under the effects of the feathers.

Invisible Emanation: After his arm was severed and absorbed by Fiamma of the Right, Fiamma's next attack that had the power to turn an entire planet to dust was cut in half before reaching Touma, as if there was an invisible right hand stretching from the wound on Touma's shoulder. As the invisible power gathered beyond the wound, Fiamma felt inferior and overshadowed, believing that everything he had paled in comparison to that great power. However, a second power, described by the narration as "Kamijou Touma's own power", appeared above the Hands invisible, seemingly opened up a large mouth and swallowed it up. As if a giant mouth was chewing, the air around Touma's shoulder shook before the first power was smashed in an instant. After that, Touma addressed the invisible Emanation and told it to stay out of the fight, as he would take care of it, just before his right arm regenerated and Touma regained Imagine Breaker. The Invisible Emanation appeared once more when Othinus crushed his right hand and charged towards her roaring, though the Magic God easily crushed it, commenting on it not living to her expectations after having produced decent results against Fiamma in WWIII.

Shell Embodied : A temporary form Touma gained when Imagine Breaker temporarily left him. Instead of his arm in which usually is Imagine Breaker, Touma gains a sky-blue and lemon-yellow arm. This arm can transform and surround Touma into a shell that has the form of a dragon. This form grants Touma superhuman capabilities, is durable enough to take a shot of Misaka's Railgun and can in short bursts match the speed of a saint. Notably, due to lacking Imagine Breaker in this form, Touma has no bad luck anymore. Dragon Emperor: One of the most notable references to dragons in the series is the transparent Dragon Emperor head that appeared in place of Touma's right arm after being severed by Aureolus Izzard. According to Stiyl Magnus, the Dragon Emperor may have been what Aureolus Izzard imagined in the eleventh hour after Touma used fear to disrupt his Ars Magna. Touma's right arm is later reattached by Heaven Canceller.
