Touhou RPG

The world of "Gensokyo" in the Touhou Project is surrounded by the Great Hakurei Barrier, creating a divide between the outer world and inner world where humans, youkai, and other beings coexist in unique ways. Changes in the Outside World affect Gensokyo, leading to a constant evolution within the realm as residents adapt to new circumstances. Gensokyo, originally seen as a secluded Eastern frontier, is physically connected to reality but isolated by the Great Hakurei Barrier, preventing easy travel between the two realms.

Within Gensokyo, there is a human village where residents live without strict laws but are wary of youkai, who often interact with them in various forms. Most youkai act independently, while groups like the kappa and tengu have their own structured communities. Fairies, on the other hand, lack intelligence and do not form strong communities due to their sheer numbers and nature. Gensokyo, cut off from the outside world during the Meiji Restoration, lacks modern infrastructure but has a rich spiritual culture. Youkai are accepted and play a normal role in daily life, causing phenomena considered abnormal in the real world to be common occurrences in Gensokyo.

The region of Gensokyo consists of diverse areas including a human village, dangerous forests, and a mountain home to various youkai. Some humans live separately, like Reimu Hakurei in the shrine and Marisa Kirisame in the Forest of Magic, while others coexist with youkai. Gensokyo also interfaces with other worlds like Higan, the Netherworld, and Former Hell, with different non-human creatures residing in adjacent territories. The Hakurei Shrine, where Reimu resides, is located in a mountain forest and suffers from poor visibility, leading to a lack of visitors and donations.

The Human Village has a doctor offering medical care akin to the late Edo period, while Eientei in the Bamboo Forest of the Lost provides treatments for more complex illnesses. Both humans and youkai receive treatment there, and affordable medicine is available at the village's medicine depot. Piety is significant in Gensokyo, with all residents showing deep respect for gods believed to reside in everything around them. The main barrier in Gensokyo is the Great Hakurei Barrier, managed by the shrine maiden and Yukari Yakumo, who can manipulate boundaries to control movement between realms.

There is also a "Boundary of Fantasy and Reality" barrier that defines Gensokyo as a world of fantasy and the Outside World as reality, established by Yukari Yakumo to attract youkai to Gensokyo. Despite being isolated, Gensokyo experiences cultural influences from both the outside world and other interconnected realms like Higan, Netherworld, and Heaven, each with its unique characteristics. Youkai incidents in Gensokyo are resolved through battles following the Spell Card Rules, which prevent a weakening of youkai power due to peace in the realm. These rules allow for structured conflicts between youkai and humans until the shrine maiden emerges victorious, signaling the end of the incident.

Non-human beings look human-like but may have some different traits like tails, oddly-colored eyes, sharp teeth, wings, etc.
