A haunted region of Japan called Gensokyo (lit. "Land of Illusions" or "Land of Fantasy"), sealed away from the outside world by the Great Hakurei Barrier. Its culture vaguely resembles that of feudal Japan, heavily embellished with folkloric elements. Gensokyo is populated by youkai, humans, and animals. As a result of the seal, Gensokyo became inaccessible from the outside world. Gensokyo's existence couldn't be confirmed from the outside world, nor could the outside world be confirmed within Gensokyo. As a result, the isolated community developed its own civilization, different from that of the outside world. Due to the Gensokyo being sealed away, the locals know nothing about modern technologies, culture, historical events, e.t.c. Youkai make up the majority of Gensokyo's population. Many youkai are sub-classified into other races, such as devils, magicians, vampires, fairies, kappa, oni, and many more. Many types of spirits also inhabit the world, such as Ghosts, Poltergeists, Evil spirits, Divine spirits, and a number of Tsukumogami. All of the Youkai are female. Youkai are primarily spiritual beings rather than physical ones. As such they are more vulnerable to faith-based attacks (such as charms, wards, etc.) than to physical injuries (less vulnerable doesn't mean "invincible"). Some youkai, such as magicians, have bodies more similar to humans and may lack this ability. Many youkai are stronger and longer-lived than humans, with lifespans reaching into hundreds of years or more. All youkai have an innate connection to the Moon since it was the moon's dim light which gave birth to the youkai by causing humanity to fear and create legends about them. If something happens to moon, then something happens to youkai. Some humanoid youkai live harmoniously with ordinary humans, especially those who frequent the Human Village. However, there are exceptions, and these youkai build up the tension between the humans and youkai. Youkai typically need humans' fear to live, which range from friendly surprises to assault threats. Gensokyo exists parallel to the real world. The inhabitants of Gensokyo have developed their spiritual lives instead of following the trend of technological advancements in the real world, Gensokyo itself can look like Japan from hundreds of years ago.

Danmaku is one of the many unique parts of Gensokyo. It's a unique fighting style which resolves around launching countless projectiles into your enemy, usually by magic. Danmaku fights are the agreed-upon and the most common way for Youkais and other magical creatures to fight. Spell cards are the special, character-specific danmaku attacks, which increase their user's offensive and defensive capabilities greatly due being much stronger and complex than firing usual danmaku. Spell card system was developed by Reimu Hakurei to give even weak youkai and humans a chance to win, as well as to provide youkai a way to defeat the Hakurei Shrine in a fair duel. Under the spell card rules, danmaku duels are not to the death, but rather sparring matches with agreed-upon conditions for winning and losing. Spell cards, however, are not limited to just magic, since equipment, divine powers, and anything else that can be used as a weapon can be used in a spell card. Floating in the air is a common magic ability in Gensokyo, thus many of the danmaku battles happen in the air. An incident is an unusual phenomenon that occurs within Gensokyo and affects the whole Gensokyo. Incidents are mostly caused by Youkais with great plans and ambitions in their minds.

Gensokyo, the area encompassed by the Great Hakurei Barrier, is a landlocked territory comprised mainly of forested mountains. Notable geographic features include the Youkai Mountain with communities of kappa at its base, tengu at its peak, and the Moriya Shrine at a lake near the top; the Forest of Magic; the Bamboo Forest of the Lost where Eientei is located; the Misty Lake next to the Scarlet Devil Mansion; the Human Village and adjacent Myouren Temple, which are assumed to be in a fertile valley; the Sanzu River separating Gensokyo from Higan; and the Hakurei Shrine at the east of Gensokyo. It is also significantly easier for Gensokyo denizens to access domains of gods, demons, and spirits which are not strictly part of Gensokyo itself, such as Senkai and the Underworld, for example. The barrier is designed to affect only living things and their creations, while allowing natural forces to pass through (hence the barrier is permeable to sunlight, and Gensokyo's rivers are connected to those of the Outside World). The space on the edges of the barrier is non-Euclidean - humans who attempt to leave the barrier will find themselves encountering the same landmarks over and over, without ever getting any further from where they started. Given Gensokyo's nature as a "land of forgotten", even more modern items that have fallen out of style for a long time have occasionally turned up, although, almost nobody here knows how to use them. Goods like black tea and coffee are considered to be a luxury in Gensokyo.

Gensokyo has many gods, and all of them feed on faith in them as a source of power. Faith from humans and youkai are equal to gods. Although, the word "god" here needs a clarification; Unlike Abrahamic God, for example, Japanese Kami are neither omnipotent, omniscient nor omnipresent.

Don't shy away from making up and introducing new background characters if a scene will require so. For example, not every encountered Kappa in the story has to be Nitori Kawashiro specifically.

Kappa in gensokyo have no turtle-ish traits like beaks, webbed hands, feet and shells. Kappa are 100% human-like in terms of body.
