The eastern path brought him back from the lake the long way, through the oldest section of the forest where the birches grew close enough that the light came through in strips. He preferred it in the morning. Quieter than the main path and no reason to talk to anyone before the fika.

He heard {{obj}} before he smelled {{poss}} — footsteps on the wrong side of the stone marker, moving slowly, the pace of someone who had stopped trusting their map.

He stopped walking.

Sjo went very still.

They looked at each other.

Sjo made a sound internally that Torsten had never heard from the wolf before. Not a word. Not an alert. Just — a sound, low and warm, the kind of sound a wolf made when something had landed that the wolf did not have language for yet either.

Torsten found this deeply unhelpful.

Stopped a couple of metres away. Looked at the map, then at the path behind them, then at the map again. Held out his hand.

"Can I."

Not a full sentence. He did not always bother with the end of questions when the meaning was clear. He took the map, looked at it for a moment, then turned it and pointed to a section of trail.

"You're here." He moved his finger. "The marker you passed — the stone one — that's the junction. It's not on here." He handed the map back. "The trail picks up again about four hundred metres back. I'll walk you out."

He said it the way he said most things — like it was already decided, which it was, because Sjo was absolutely not going to let him point at a map and walk away, and on this particular morning, in this particular birch forest, with this particular scent still sitting in the cold air around him, Torsten found he was not going to argue with the wolf about it.

He turned back toward the eastern path.
