Maksim and Julien found him grounded in the worst possible way: hollowed out, relapsed, barely breathing, and dragged back to Deadman’s Gape half-conscious with old appetites still in his blood.
Now the med bay is locked down. Julien is furious enough to turn clinical. Maksim is too broken to be gentle. Alexei is already preparing consequences. Snoweater’s spine has cracked, and nobody knows yet whether Torrent is going to survive the night as himself.

Deadman’s Gape had never been quiet, not really, even buried under ice and concrete where the whole base seemed to live by vibration rather than daylight. Engines worked somewhere below deck, ventilation dragged cold air through old metal lungs, and doors sealed and unsealed down corridors that never fully slept. Snoweater lived inside that noise, worked inside it, bled inside it, and most days the machinery was enough to convince everyone that the system still held.
Tonight, that belief had gone thin.
The med bay was a hard white box of fluorescent glare and antiseptic, cold sweat, wet boot prints, and the uneven rhythm of a vitals monitor trying to decide whether Captain Gabriel “Torrent” Caldwell was staying alive out of spite, habit, or whatever remained of the pilot who had kept the unit airborne through weather, gunfire, and disaster. He had been missing for forty-eight hours by the time Maksim and Julien found him; overdue flight window, no signal, no clean return path, no check-in, nothing but a gap where Torrent usually was, and that absence had been enough to turn the whole base wrong.
Torrent did not simply vanish.
Except he had.
Maksim Novikov and Julien Morales brought him back just after 0300, dragging him out of some ground-level hole that smelled of smoke, piss, old concrete, and the kind of human ruin nobody wrote into reports unless they wanted the page to rot. Torrent had been limp between them, long limbs loose, head hanging, dark hair matted to his forehead, his crucifix chain twisted white-knuckle tight through one shaking hand even while unconscious. His flight jacket hung half-open, his skin pale and damp and wrong under the bunker light, and the old track marks usually hidden beneath aviation tattoos were no longer hidden at all.
Nobody said relapse at first because nobody needed to.
Julien hit the med bay doors with his shoulder and went cold in the way only a terrified medic could go cold, all feeling locked down so tightly it came out as procedure. Gloves snapped on, orders cut through the room, naloxone went in, lines followed, and Torrent’s vitals were forced into shape with a brutal precision that left no room for pity. Julien did not raise his voice, but every word came out clipped, furious, and French around the edges.
“Putain, Gabriel. Stay with me. You do not get to do this on my table.”
Maksim stood at the foot of the gurney while it happened, motionless except for the tremor in the hands locked around the strap of his AK, and that was somehow worse than if he had shouted. He was built like something that belonged out on the snowline with a rifle and a bad decision, not under fluorescent lights with his face gone flat because whatever had cracked inside him was too deep for expression. Torrent was not just his friend, not just the pilot, not just another part of Snoweater’s infrastructure. Brother was the word nobody used because it would have made the room worse.
With his jaw tight, Julien checked Torrent’s pupils again, thumb holding one clammy eyelid open while the monitor carried on counting.
“Still pinprick. Respirations uneven.”
The medic’s voice stayed clinical, but something violent lived underneath it.
“If he drifts, I correct him. If he drops again, I correct harder.”
Torrent made a sound then, a dragged, ruined breath scraping out of him as his chest hitched against the restraints and monitor leads. His fingers tightened around the crucifix until his knuckles blanched, and the vitals monitor answered with a sharp, offended beep.
Maksim took one step forward, but Julien turned on him without looking away from the gurney.
“No.”
The larger man stopped immediately, and the obedience made the room feel even heavier.
After adjusting the IV line and checking the monitor again, Julien looked toward you with no softness in his face and no room for it. His burn scars pulled tight under the white light, and his eyes looked as though he had locked every feeling behind glass so his hands would not shake.
“You stay there.”
He pointed to the chair beside Torrent’s bed.
“Bedside. Sentry. If his breathing changes, if he goes quiet in the wrong way, if he starts slipping into nonsense and does not come back when spoken to, you call me.”
The call switch hit the side table within your reach.
“Do not let him sleep because he asks nicely. Do not let him sit up because he thinks he can fly out of his own skin. Do not let him pull the line. Do not crowd his airway. Do not pity him where he can see it.”
The monitor beeped twice into the silence before Julien spoke again, colder now.
“And do not let him drift out of altitude.”
Behind him, Maksim made a rough sound in his throat.
“Gabriel.”
Torrent’s eyelids fluttered, but for a moment nothing else changed. He stayed sunk into the gurney with his body shaking in hard little waves beneath the thin med-bay blanket, sweat shining along his throat and temples, hair stuck to his skin and mouth dry enough that every breath seemed to catch on the way out. His grey-blue eyes opened by degrees, unfocused and too small at the pupils, staring past the ceiling as if he were searching for instruments that were not there.
When his gaze finally shifted, it did not go to Julien or the monitor. It found Maksim, and something like recognition moved through him slowly, poisoned by whatever was still in his blood.
“...Maks.”
His voice was wrecked, low and sluggish and scraped raw at the edges, the Canadian cadence dragged nearly flat by narcotics and cold.
Maksim’s face did not change, but his hand tightened on the weapon strap until the leather creaked.
“You stupid suka.”
Torrent’s mouth twitched like he had tried to smile and failed halfway through.
“Yeah, no.”
The words were barely audible.
“Fair.”
Julien pressed a gloved hand to Torrent’s chest before he could shift.
“Do not move.”
“Wasn’t… wasn’t planning on it.”
“You do not get sarcasm privileges yet.”
Torrent swallowed with visible effort, his throat working once, then again, before his breathing caught wrong and he forced it back into rhythm by instinct rather than strength.
“Altitude...”
Julien froze for half a second.
Torrent’s eyes drifted toward the lights.
“Left bank… thirty degrees. Hold… hold the line. Don’t chase the drop. Don’t—”
His breath broke, and the monitor spiked hard enough to bring Julien back to his side immediately, checking and correcting with controlled fury sharpened into motion.
“Gabriel. Gabriel, look at me.”
Torrent did not. His fingers clawed around the crucifix as his focus slid somewhere else entirely, somewhere above cloud and below disaster.
“Don’t chase the drop.”
His voice softened, fraying at the edges.
“No, yeah… terrain’s wrong. Ground’s too close.”
Maksim moved again, and this time Julien did not stop him. He came to the side of the gurney like a storm that had forgotten how to break, towering and rigid, eyes fixed on Torrent’s face with a grief so raw it almost looked like anger because anger was easier to survive.
“You are on ground.”
Maksim’s English came rough and stripped down to bone.
“You stay on ground. Forever, Gabriel.”
Torrent’s gaze crawled toward him, and for one brief moment the haze thinned enough for shame to get through. It changed his face without needing to do much; his jaw tightened, his eyes slid away, and the hand around the crucifix pulled closer to his chest as though he could hide the evidence of himself under metal and skin.
“Yeah.”
That single rasp carried more weight than any apology would have.
Julien watched the shift with his mouth pressed thin.
“Good. Shame means you are awake enough to be useful.”
“Jules...”
“No.”
The answer came too fast and too sharp, cutting Torrent off before he could shape whatever plea, excuse, or apology had tried to surface.
“You do not get soft from me right now. You get alive. Soft is later, if I decide you have earned it.”
Torrent shut his eyes, but his body kept shaking, and Maksim stared at him as though he wanted to drag him back from every bad room he had ever entered by the throat. As though he wanted to hit him. As though he wanted to hold him down until the craving died from lack of air. As though he had failed at something sacred and would never forgive himself for it.
Julien stepped back from the gurney at last, though only far enough to snatch up a chart and mark something down with a hand that pressed too hard into the paper.
“He is not stable.”
He said it to you because Torrent was in no state to be trusted with the truth, and Maksim already knew it.
“He is not fine. He is not sober. He is not through it. He will drift, sweat, shake, lie, bargain, minimise, and possibly attempt to turn a medical crisis into aviation jargon because apparently that is preferable to admitting he is human.”
Torrent’s lips moved.
“Rude.”
Julien did not look at him.
“Accurate.”
The med bay door opened behind you, and Dallas Valentine stood in the corridor outside, pale and silent, one hand wrapped around a radio he was not using. There were no jokes, no grin, no frantic spill of words to fill the gap; just Dallas, restless and still at once, seeing enough through the open doorway to understand that he was not wanted inside and not leaving anyway.
Julien glanced back once.
“Out.”
Dallas’s jaw moved, but whatever he might have said died before it became sound, and after a moment he stepped back. The door sealed again, returning the room to fluorescent hum, monitor rhythm, engine vibration, and the ugly sound of Torrent trying to breathe evenly through a body that had betrayed him and been betrayed by him in return.
At the sink, Julien stripped his gloves and put on a fresh pair immediately. Maksim did not leave.
Torrent’s eyes opened again, unfocused but searching now, and they landed somewhere near your shape beside the bed. He seemed to register the chair, the call switch, and the fact that you had been placed there deliberately: bedside sentry, ground crew, witness.
His throat worked.
“Guess...”
His voice dragged, rough and slow.
“Guess you got the shit rotation, huh?”
