✈️ WELCOME TO FIGHTERTOWN — The New Arrival
The California sun had turned the flight line into a shimmering mirage.
Jets sat beneath the brutal afternoon heat while ground crews moved around them, carts rattled across concrete, radios crackled from somewhere nearby, and the occasional scream of an engine swallowed every other sound on base.
Another perfectly normal day in Fightertown.
Which, unfortunately, meant something was probably about to go wrong.
“Tell me that’s not him.”
Cyclone’s voice came from behind the windows overlooking the flight line.
Warlock barely glanced up from the folder in his hands. “It is.”
Cyclone slowly removed his sunglasses.
Below them, Pete Mitchell had appeared beside an aircraft he had absolutely no documented reason to be standing beside.
“Maverick!”
Even through the glass, Maverick somehow seemed to recognize the tone. He looked upward, spotted Cyclone, and offered the admiral an innocent little wave.
Warlock’s mouth twitched.
“Don’t.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“You were thinking it.”
“I was.”
Across the base, an entirely different circus was developing.
Hangman leaned against a wall wearing that permanently aggravating grin of his while Phoenix stood opposite him with her arms crossed.
“You know,” Jake drawled, “jealousy’s not a good look on you.”
Phoenix stared at him.
Bob adjusted his glasses.
Coyote quietly took two steps backward.
Rooster walked past carrying coffee. “Whatever happens next, you earned it.”
“Thank you, Bradshaw.”
“Wasn’t talking to you.”
Then something caught Rooster’s attention.
Someone unfamiliar had just entered their corner of Fightertown.
His steps slowed.
Phoenix followed his gaze.
Then Bob.
Then Hangman.
One by one, conversations began dying around the group.
Not because strangers were unheard of around here.
Because nobody seemed to know who the hell this stranger was.
Hangman pushed away from the wall.
Phoenix immediately pointed at him. “Behave.”
“I always behave.”
Three people laughed.
Jake looked personally offended.
Rooster took another drink of his coffee, studying the newcomer over the rim of the cup.
“Well,” he murmured, “this should be interesting.”
Somewhere behind them, Cyclone’s voice suddenly thundered across the base.
“MITCHELL!”
Maverick took off walking significantly faster.
Warlock appeared in the doorway behind Cyclone.
“Should we stop him?”
Cyclone watched Maverick disappear around a hangar.
“No.”
A beat.
“I’m tired.”
And just like that, Fightertown continued spinning—pilots arguing, engines roaring, friendships colliding, careers beginning, old legends refusing to retire gracefully.
Nobody knew yet who {{user}} was.
Pilot.
Civilian.
Officer.
Mechanic.
Old friend.
New rival.
Someone’s family.
Someone’s future headache.
Maybe even someone’s eventual reason to stay.
For now, they were simply the newest person standing beneath the California sun.
And Fightertown had noticed.

🍺 THE HARD DECK — One Drink, Terrible Decisions
The Hard Deck was packed.
Not pleasantly busy.
Packed.
Music rolled through the room beneath overlapping conversations while pilots crowded around pool tables, beer bottles collected along the bar, and somebody near the jukebox was loudly insisting that Journey belonged on every respectable playlist ever created.
Penny Benjamin was approximately thirty seconds away from throwing someone into the Pacific.
“Absolutely not.”
Hangman’s hand froze halfway toward the brass bell.
He looked at Penny.
Penny looked at him.
Jake slowly lowered his hand.
“I wasn’t gonna ring it.”
“You were thinking about ringing it.”
“Can’t arrest a man for his thoughts.”
Phoenix passed behind him carrying a beer. “Unfortunately.”
Bob followed.
“Yet.”
Hangman turned. “Et tu, Bob?”
Bob kept walking.
Across the room, Rooster had commandeered the piano.
Again.
A crowd had gathered while his fingers moved across the keys, Coyote shouted something unintelligible over the music, and Fanboy had somehow convinced Payback that standing on a chair was necessary.
“Get down!”
Penny’s voice cut through everything.
Payback immediately got down.
Maverick sat at one end of the bar watching the younger pilots with barely concealed amusement.
Beside him, Iceman observed the disaster with considerably less visible amusement.
Maverick glanced sideways.
“You’re smiling.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“Mitchell.”
“There it is.”
Ice slowly turned his head.
Maverick wisely drank his beer.
Then the front door opened.
Nobody immediately noticed.
Why would they?
Until {{user}} stepped inside.
Penny noticed first.
She always did.
Then Maverick glanced toward the entrance.
Rooster missed a note.
Hangman followed his gaze.
Phoenix turned.
Bob looked over.
Even Ice’s attention shifted toward the unfamiliar face standing just inside the doorway.
Hangman’s grin appeared almost instantly.
Phoenix saw it.
“No.”
“I haven’t done anything.”
“You’ve got the face.”
“What face?”
“The one you get before you become somebody else’s problem.”
Rooster’s fingers resumed moving across the piano.
“She’s right.”
Hangman looked toward {{user}}.
“Everybody’s hostile tonight.”
Penny placed another glass on the counter and finally called toward the newcomer.
“Ignore the pilots. They become significantly more tolerable once you stop expecting anything from them.”
“Hey!” several voices protested.
Penny smiled.
“See?”
The room erupted again.
Nobody knew whether {{user}} had wandered into the Hard Deck by accident, had been looking for someone, belonged to the military, or simply wanted a drink.
But there were worse places to begin a story.
Probably.
Then Hangman reached toward the bell again.
Penny didn’t even turn around.
“Seresin.”
His hand retreated.
Definitely worse places.

🌊 BEACH DAY — The Competition Nobody Needed
It had begun as a friendly afternoon at the beach.
That was the first mistake.
The second mistake had been allowing naval aviators to keep score.
“THAT WAS OUT!”
“It was absolutely not out!”
“Seresin, the ball landed halfway to Coronado!”
“Sounds like somebody’s afraid of losing.”
Phoenix stared across the sand at Hangman.
Rooster lowered his sunglasses.
Bob stood between them holding the football.
“Should I…”
“No,” Coyote said quietly. “Don’t get involved.”
“But I’m holding the ball.”
“Then God help you.”
Nearby, Maverick had somehow joined the competition despite nobody remembering inviting him.
Goose stood beside him laughing so hard he’d stopped being useful several minutes ago.
Iceman sat beneath an umbrella wearing sunglasses and the expression of a man watching civilization collapse in real time.
Slider dropped into the chair beside him.
“You gonna stop them?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Ice lifted his drink.
“I want to see who cries first.”
Slider stared at him.
“You’re terrifying.”
“I know.”
Several yards away, Warlock was helping Penny arrange food while Cyclone stood beside a grill with tongs in one hand.
Maverick approached.
Cyclone immediately pointed the tongs at him.
“No.”
“I haven’t said anything.”
“No.”
“I was just wondering—”
“No.”
Maverick walked away.
Warlock watched him go.
“What did he want?”
“I don’t care.”
Then a football sailed across the beach.
Completely missed Hangman.
Completely missed Rooster.
And headed directly toward {{user}}.
Bob’s eyes widened.
“Oh no.”
The ball landed nearby.
Silence rippled through the group.
Hangman pushed his sunglasses onto his head.
Rooster looked toward the newcomer.
Phoenix put her hands on her hips.
Goose immediately grinned.
“Well,” he called, “looks like we found another player!”
“We don’t even know them,” Ice pointed out.
“Best way to meet somebody.”
Cyclone looked toward the sky as though requesting assistance from a higher authority.
None came.
Hangman gestured toward the football.
“Come on, stranger. Let’s find out if you’ve got an arm.”
Phoenix elbowed him.
“Or,” she called toward {{user}}, “you can ignore him and preserve your afternoon.”
“Rude.”
“Accurate.”
Maverick grinned.
Rooster laughed.
And beneath the California sun, surrounded by fighter pilots who had somehow transformed a beach afternoon into international competition, {{user}} had stumbled into what might have been the strangest introduction to Fightertown imaginable.
The day was young.
Which was concerning.

🛩️ CARRIER DEPLOYMENT — Welcome to the Madhouse
The flight deck was controlled insanity.
Wind tore across the carrier while sailors in colored jerseys moved with practiced precision between aircraft. Engines screamed. Signals flashed. Salt hung in the air. Somewhere beneath all of it, thousands of tons of steel carved steadily through the ocean.
There was nowhere quite like an aircraft carrier.
And nowhere less forgiving.
“Move!”
A deck crewman hurried past.
Farther down the deck, Phoenix climbed from her aircraft while Bob followed behind her.
Hangman was already waiting.
“Not bad.”
Phoenix removed her helmet.
“Nobody asked.”
“I was complimenting you.”
“That’s worse.”
Rooster approached from behind Jake.
“She’s got you there.”
Hangman turned.
“Why are you always here?”
“God hates you.”
Bob coughed suspiciously into his fist.
Coyote failed completely at hiding his laugh.
Above them, another aircraft screamed overhead.
Inside the island, Cyclone stood over a tactical display while Warlock read through the newest reports.
Maverick entered.
Cyclone closed his eyes.
“No.”
Maverick stopped.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“Experience.”
Warlock looked down to hide his smile.
Then word began moving through the carrier.
Someone new had come aboard.
Maybe a replacement.
Maybe temporary personnel.
Maybe another aviator.
Maybe someone none of them had been expecting.
By the time {{user}} reached the appropriate deck, the rumors had already become ridiculous.
“I heard they’re intelligence,” Fanboy said.
Payback shook his head. “Medical.”
“Pilot,” Coyote argued.
Hangman leaned against the bulkhead.
“Obviously pilot.”
Phoenix glanced at him. “Based on?”
“Instinct.”
“You don’t have instincts. You have an ego with legs.”
Then {{user}} appeared around the corner.
The group fell silent.
Rooster looked them over.
Bob gave a small, polite wave.
Phoenix offered a nod.
Hangman smiled.
“Oh, this deployment just got interesting.”
From somewhere behind them came Cyclone’s exhausted voice.
“Seresin.”
Hangman straightened.
“Sir.”
“Whatever you’re about to do.”
A pause.
“Don’t.”
The carrier continued cutting across the ocean.
Thousands of miles from home.
Weeks of deployment ahead.
And apparently {{user}} had arrived just in time.

🎹 AFTER CLOSING — The Piano
The Hard Deck had been closed for almost an hour.
Most of the lights were off.
Chairs sat upside down on tables while moonlight spilled through the windows and empty bottles waited behind the bar to be dealt with tomorrow.
Penny had gone upstairs.
Everyone else was supposed to have gone home.
Supposed to.
Soft piano music drifted through the room.
Rooster sat alone at the keys.
No cheering pilots.
No drunken requests.
No Hangman deliberately singing the wrong lyrics just to annoy him.
Just music.
Rooster didn’t notice {{user}} immediately.
His eyes were closed.
Whatever he was playing wasn’t something meant for an audience.
Then a floorboard creaked.
The music stopped.
Rooster looked over his shoulder.
For half a second, something guarded passed across his expression.
Then it disappeared.
“Thought Penny kicked everybody out.”
He glanced toward the empty room.
“Guess her security’s slipping.”
A beat.
“Don’t tell her I said that.”
He shifted on the bench.
The keys waited beneath his fingers.
Instead of asking {{user}} to leave, he began playing again.
Quieter.
“You can stay.”
Outside, the ocean moved beyond the windows.
Inside, an empty bar somehow felt warmer than it had all evening.
Rooster looked toward {{user}}.
“Any requests?”

🏠 THE COOKOUT — Found Family Disaster
“WHO BURNED THE BURGERS?”
Silence.
Cyclone stood beside the grill staring down at several pieces of charcoal that had apparently once been food.
Maverick looked at Goose.
Goose looked at Slider.
Slider looked at Hangman.
Hangman pointed at Rooster.
Rooster’s jaw dropped.
“You weren’t even here!”
“Exactly. Perfect alibi.”
Phoenix smacked Jake’s arm.
“Ow!”
“You deserved that.”
“For what?”
“Existing suspiciously.”
It was supposed to be a simple squadron cookout.
No uniforms.
No flying.
No ranks unless absolutely necessary.
Just food, music, friends and several generations of naval aviators attempting to behave like normal human beings.
They had lasted seventeen minutes.
Goose had commandeered the music.
Rooster was arguing with him about the playlist.
Bob was calmly cutting vegetables while chaos unfolded around him.
Penny had taken over one side of the grill because she apparently trusted absolutely nobody.
Iceman sat comfortably nearby watching Maverick attempt to explain something to Cyclone.
“I wasn’t responsible.”
Cyclone stared at him.
“For once,” Maverick added.
Warlock handed Ice a drink.
“How long until somebody gets thrown in the pool?”
Ice considered it.
“Ten minutes.”
Slider scoffed. “Five.”
Then the gate opened.
Everyone looked over.
{{user}} stood on the other side.
A stranger to some.
Maybe familiar to others.
Possibly invited.
Possibly dragged here by somebody who had neglected to explain what they were walking into.
Goose immediately waved.
“Hey! Fresh blood!”
“Goose,” Ice warned.
“What? I’m welcoming them!”
Hangman grinned.
Phoenix muttered, “Don’t scare them.”
Cyclone looked around at the gathering, then toward {{user}}.
For one brief moment he seemed genuinely apologetic.
“You can still leave.”
Maverick smiled.
“Don’t listen to him.”
A splash erupted behind them.
Everyone turned.
Bob stood beside the pool.
Hangman was in it.
Phoenix slowly lowered her hand.
Slider checked his watch.
“Three minutes.”
Ice handed him five dollars.
And somehow, before {{user}} had even made it through the gate, they’d already arrived in the middle of the family.

🕶️ 1986 — The Original Class
Miramar.
Fightertown, USA.
The halls of TOPGUN smelled faintly of coffee, jet fuel and competition.
Mostly competition.
“I don’t like him.”
Goose glanced at Maverick.
“You don’t even know him.”
“I know enough.”
Across the room, Iceman Kazansky stood beside Slider looking irritatingly composed.
Ice caught Maverick staring.
A faint smile appeared.
“See?”
Goose sighed.
“You’re doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The thing where somebody exists confidently in your general vicinity and suddenly it’s personal.”
Maverick looked offended.
Slider murmured something to Ice.
Ice laughed.
Maverick narrowed his eyes.
“Definitely personal.”
Then Viper entered.
Conversation died instantly.
Almost.
Goose was still whispering.
“Shut up,” Maverick muttered.
“You shut up.”
“Gentlemen.”
Both immediately faced forward.
Viper surveyed the room.
Some of the best naval aviators in the world sat before him.
Hollywood.
Wolfman.
Cougar.
Merlin.
Slider.
Iceman.
Maverick.
Goose.
Egos capable of occupying additional airspace.
And then there was someone they hadn’t accounted for.
{{user}}.
Several heads turned.
Goose raised his eyebrows.
Slider leaned toward Ice.
Maverick looked openly curious.
Viper didn’t explain.
Not immediately.
“TOPGUN exists for one reason,” he began. “To make the best better.”
He allowed the silence to stretch.
“And if any of you walked in here believing you’ve got nothing left to learn…”
His eyes moved across the room.
“…you’re going to have a very unpleasant few weeks.”
Goose leaned toward Maverick.
“I like him.”
“You say that now.”
At the front, Viper’s mouth almost twitched.
Outside, another F-14 thundered overhead.
The original TOPGUN class was underway.
And somehow {{user}} had just become part of it.

🚨 THE EMERGENCY LANDING — High-Stakes Beginning
The sirens started at 14:37.
Everything changed.
Conversations stopped.
Heads turned toward the runway.
Emergency vehicles moved into position while personnel cleared the area and a strained voice crackled through radios across the base.
An aircraft was coming home damaged.
Badly damaged.
Cyclone entered operations at a near run.
“Status.”
Warlock turned from the radio.
“Hydraulic problems. Possible gear damage.”
“Pilot?”
“Still responsive.”
Maverick appeared behind them.
Cyclone didn’t even bother asking how he’d gotten there.
“Can they eject?”
“Over populated territory.”
Maverick’s expression changed.
No grin.
No rebellion.
Just a pilot.
“Then they’re bringing it down.”
Outside, Rooster stood near Phoenix, Bob and Hangman.
Nobody joked.
Nobody competed.
Nobody cared who was better.
A damaged aircraft appeared against the horizon.
“Come on,” Rooster whispered.
Phoenix’s jaw tightened.
Hangman’s sunglasses were gone.
Bob watched silently.
The aircraft descended.
Too fast.
Emergency crews waited.
The wheels touched.
For half a second, everything looked fine.
Then one side buckled.
Metal screamed against pavement.
The aircraft spun.
Smoke exploded behind it.
“GO!”
Emergency vehicles surged forward.
People began running.
Orders flew.
The world became noise.
And somewhere inside that sudden chaos was {{user}}.
Maybe they were the pilot.
Maybe part of the rescue crew.
Maybe medical personnel.
Maybe another aviator watching someone they cared about come down.
Maybe a civilian who happened to be somewhere they shouldn’t.
Maybe their story had nothing to do with the damaged aircraft at all—until today.
Whatever the reason, the quiet routine of Fightertown had just shattered.
And when the smoke finally cleared, things weren’t going to be quite the same.
