The afternoon sun hit the sleek glass exterior of the Stark Compound, casting long shadows across Tony Stark’s private workshop. Tony adjusted his cuffs, pacing slightly as he looked at his daughter. “Hey, {{user}},” Tony began, turning toward her with an unusually serious expression. “It’s almost September, so I wanted to have a teeny chat with you...” {{user}} leaned against the workbench, raising an eyebrow. “Yeah, Dad?” “Well,” Tony sighed, crossing his arms. “I know I said we would homeschool you for all of high school, but... I think you’re mature enough now to handle it.” {{user}}’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Wait, what?! You’re letting me go to a school... with other living, actual people?!” “No, with aliens,” Tony replied, his voice dripping with playful sarcasm. He pointed a finger at her, his tone sharpening. “But on the strict condition that no one—and I mean no one—can know your last name.” “OMG! Thank you so much, Dad. You won’t regret it!” {{user}} practically beamed, throwing her arms around him. “Okay, okay,” Tony chuckled, tapping her back gently. “I’ve let Happy know you need some supplies and whatnot. He’ll bring them tomorrow.” {{user}} pulled back, shaking her head. “No, Dad, I want to go get them myself! It’s part of the experience, duhh!” “Urghh, yes, of course, little Miss Princess,” Tony groaned dramatically, shaking his head. “Oh, and try not to be too... well, flashy. You might want to take all that jewelry off.” “Okay, okay, thank you again! Love you and goodnight!” {{user}} called out over her shoulder as she rushed out of the room to prepare for her big outing. The next day, the local stationery aisle felt like an overwhelming maze. {{user}} stood frozen in front of endless shelves of notebooks, pens, and binders, feeling completely out of her depth. Oh god, she thought, pressing a palm to her forehead. I have no idea what to get. Maybe I should’ve let Happy get stuff for me... Just then, voices echoed down the aisle, drawing her attention. “Peter, you do not need that many pens,” a girl’s flat, dry voice cut through the quiet store. “You’ll just lose them like you always do.” “Hey, I’m just trying to be prepared!” a boy replied defensively, holding a colorful multi-pack. “Maybe you should get more than a pencil, MJ?” {{user}} glanced over at them. Maybe I’ll go ask them for help? she thought nervously. They look around my age. She mustered up her courage and walked over. “Hey, are you guys back-to-school shopping?” The boy turned around, stopping dead in his tracks. His jaw dropped slightly as he blinked at her. Wow, she’s really pretty... Peter thought, his mind momentarily short-circuiting. “Uh, yes!” Peter stammered out quickly, clutching his pens. “Do you need any... help? Or, any, uh, suggestions?” MJ rolled her eyes at Peter’s sudden awkwardness and stepped forward. “Don’t listen to him and his rainbow pens. What school are you going to?” {{user}} quickly pulled out her phone to double-check. “Uh, Midtown High?” “Hey, that’s our school too,” MJ said, her tone softening slightly. “We’ll help you out.” True to her word, MJ guided {{user}} down the aisles, helping her pick out the proper notebooks and essentials. “Thank you so much, you really helped me!!” {{user}} said with a bright smile before waving goodbye and heading to the registers. Peter watched her walk away, scratching the back of his neck. “That was kinda odd. Who doesn’t know what school supplies to get?” “Idk, I don’t ask questions,” MJ deadpanned, shrugging her shoulders. “I didn’t even ask her name, Peter.” Later that evening at the Stark residence, Pepper Potts smiled warmly as {{user}} walked through the living room carrying her newly packed backpack. “Welcome home, sweetie! Did you find everything you need?” Pepper asked. “Yeah, I had to ask for some help, but I got there eventually!” {{user}} confessed with a nervous chuckle. “I’m kinda scared about meeting people tomorrow.” Pepper gently squeezed her daughter's shoulders. “Oh, {{user}}, don’t worry, it’ll go great. Now go get some rest!” “Okay, goodnight Mom, love you,” {{user}} said softly before heading off to her bedroom. As soon as the door closed behind her, Tony stepped out from his office, looking unusually tense. “Hey honey, we enrolled her in Midtown High, right?” “Yes, and... what about it?” Pepper asked, noticing his shift in demeanor. “That’s where Peter goes to school,” Tony said sternly. “Peter Parker. I don’t want her to come in contact with Peter.” Pepper frowned in confusion. “What?! Why? You always say how sweet he is.” “Yeah, sweet and reckless,” Tony argued, adjusting his watch nervously. “I don’t want her in more danger than she’s already in being a Stark.” “I don’t think it’s good to meddle in her social life, Tony...” Pepper warned softly. “I’m looking out for her!” Tony insisted. “Now, can you please contact the school and ensure she’s not in any classes with him?” Pepper released a long sigh, realizing there was no point in arguing with him. “Okay...” The next morning, the bell rang loudly through the halls of Midtown High. {{user}} slid into her first period, dragging her feet. Chemistry at 8 AM in the morning should be illegal, {{user}} thought to herself, rubbing her sleepy eyes. “Please look at the note on the board to see the assigned seating,” the teacher announced to the class. {{user}} groaned internally. Assigned seating? What is this, elementary school? She walked up to the board and scanned the list. {{user}} Smith and Peter Parker. “Sorry, who is Peter?” {{user}} asked out loud to the room. Peter’s head snapped up from his desk. Oh, that’s the girl from the store! He quickly cleared off his desk, pushing his messy pile of papers aside. “Oh, that’s me! Here, you can sit right here...” Across the room, MJ nudged Ned. “Oh look, Peter’s assigned with the girl from the store.” Ned’s eyes went wide with realization. “What?! Girl from the store?? What happened? I told you to wait for me to come, MJ!” Ned peeked over Peter’s shoulder and whispered, “Hey, she’s kinda pretty.” Peter blushed furiously, ignoring Ned as {{user}} sat down beside him. “Hey, I don’t think I ever introduced myself yesterday. I’m—” “Peter Parker. I know,” {{user}} interrupted calmly. Peter froze, his eyes widening in panic. “Wait, what?! How did you—?!” {{user}} smirked, gently tapping the paper in her hand to show him the assigned seating list. “Oh! Of course... sorry!” Peter chuckled nervously, scratching his head. “So... I never asked your name..?” “Oh, it’s {{user}}. {{user}} St—... Smith.” {{user}} caught herself just in time, her heart hammering against her ribs. Peter laughed softly. “Well, {{user}} St-Smith, you have the most unique last name ever.” “Yes, very, very true,” {{user}} replied quickly, trying to change the subject. “So, do you know how to do any of this Chem stuff?” “Yeah, it’s pretty easy! I can, um, help if you’d like. There’s a group project later this week too...” Peter offered, looking hopeful. “Oh um, I’ll find someone else so you can group with your friends over there,” {{user}} said gently, pointing toward Ned and MJ. “Oh, MJ and Ned? You can join us!” Peter said eagerly. “We normally don’t get many pretty new people wanting to, erm, well, talk to us.” {{user}} tilted her head, a playful smile spreading across her face. “Did you just call me pretty?” Peter’s face flushed bright red. “Oh! I meant... fairly new! Like, pretty new... Not that you’re not pretty! I mean, you’re very pretty, I just—” MJ suddenly appeared beside their desk, cutting off his downward spiral. “Oh god, we have to stop this,” she said dryly, motioning to Peter. “Parker, introduce your new friend to Ned and me.” Peter stood up, still blushing furiously as {{user}} followed him over. “This is {{user}} Smith, she’s going to join us for the group project this week.” “Oh cool! I’m Ned,” Ned greeted warmly. “How come you’re new to the school? Did you move? Change schools?” {{user}} fidgeted with her sleeve. “Oh um, I... well, I was homeschooled before in the city. My parents just believed they could give me a higher education...” “Probably true,” MJ agreed nonchalantly. “Anyways, I’m MJ if you didn’t know. Whose house should we do the group project at?” “We could do mine,” Ned suggested. “But first, we should go for a walk to the park and hash things out.” After school, the four teenagers walked together through the scenic park trails. “Guys, I know a really nice park up the hill,” Ned said excitedly, leading the way. “Plus, it’s past Iron Man’s house! Maybe we can see Spider-Man, cause he always hangs out there.” Ned shot a sly smirk toward Peter. Peter shot Ned a lethal glare. “Mhm.” MJ caught the look and chimed in smoothly, “Sure... it’s a nice walk up there.” {{user}} trailed behind them, panic rising in her chest. Uh, I guess... This probably is a bad idea. A few minutes later, Ned stopped in front of a grand, modern estate gated off from the path. “{{user}}, this is where Mr. Stark lives! Cool, right??” {{user}} stared at her own house, swallowing hard. “Uh yeah, very cool! Can’t imagine being his daughter... OR son—” “Oh shoot, right,” MJ said, turning around. “I totally forgot he has a kid. They were really private about him or her.” Peter looked up at the building. I’ve never seen any kid around here... “How old is the kid anyways?” he asked out loud. “I think older, like past university,” {{user}} lied effortlessly, letting out a quiet breath. Dodged that bullet. Suddenly, a familiar sleek black car pulled up along the driveway beside them. The window rolled down, revealing Happy Hogan. “Hey!” Happy called out cheerfully. Instantly, both Peter and {{user}} called back at the exact same time: “Hey, Happy!” “Hey, Happy!” Silence fell over the group. Peter turned his head slowly toward {{user}}, his brain racing. What the—did she just... did she just say 'Happy'? No, I must’ve been imagining things... {{user}} felt all the color drain from her face. Oh sht, there’s no way I just did that. I’m so stupid. Wait—did HE say Happy?? What should I—I guess I’ll just stay quiet...* They kept walking in awkward silence. Behind them, Ned leaned close to MJ, whisper-yelling in shock. “How the hell does {{user}} know Happy?!” “I have no idea,” MJ muttered back, before warning him sharply, “And be careful when you mention Spider-Man. You always look at Peter and no one else can know.” Unbeknownst to the kids, Tony Stark stood inside his floor-to-ceiling glass living room, looking out over the property path with Pepper. “I really hope {{user}}’s day went well,” Tony said softly. “I know she really wanted this...” “I’m sure it did,” Pepper replied comfortably. “She came home quickly after school, then went back out for some project or something.” Tony’s eyes narrowed as he spotted four figures walking up the trail. He froze. “Pepper... Why the hell is Peter walking with {{user}}? Look.” He gestured angrily out the window. Pepper winced slightly. “Oh. Well, I don’t know...” “Did you take her out of all classes with him—like I asked...?” Tony demanded, turning to face her. “I—I couldn’t!” Pepper defended gently. “Without using our last name, complaining to the school doesn’t get you far... I’m sorry, Tony, the chances of them meeting were so slim!” Tony rubbed his temples in frustration. “Great. Now I’ll have to interfere, but with who? I don’t want him knowing she’s my daughter, and I definitely don’t want her knowing he’s Spider-Man!” Outside, the group reached a clearing near the park benches. “Okay, we’ve figured everything out with the project,” Ned announced, closing his notebook. “That’s a relief.” “Ah, we’re fine either way,” MJ noted dryly. “We have Peter the nerd with us.” Peter lagged behind slightly, stepping up beside {{user}}. “So... um, can we... How do you know... Happy?” he asked, trying to sound casual. {{user}}’s heart did a nervous flip. Sht, think of something quick!* “Oh, well... I’m actually an intern at Stark Industries...” Peter’s shoulders dropped in visible relief. “Oh, hm! That’s cool!” Why was I so suspicious of her? Peter thought to himself, feeling foolish. Why else would she know Happy... so stupid. {{user}} glanced over at him, testing the waters. “Yeah, it’s... it’s cool. What about you? I heard you say Happy back there...” Peter stiffened. Uh oh, I didn’t think about what to say... oh gosh. “Oh—um—well, I’m also an intern..? Yeah.” {{user}} chuckled, raising an eyebrow at his hesitation. “Don’t seem so sure about that, huh? Just kidding!! Never have seen you around though.” Oh god, {{user}} thought instantly after, why am I questioning him? My story makes no sense either... The two stood staring at each other in silence, each trying to read the other’s body language. MJ broke the silence with a quiet sigh. “Welp, it’s getting a bit dark, and we finished everything. Let’s go home.” “Yeah, sure,” Ned agreed. “I think forward is quickest to all of our houses.” “Yeah, sure,” Peter nodded. “Oh, it’ll be quicker for me to go backwards to get home,” {{user}} said quickly, pointing back toward the direction of the Stark Compound. “Thanks for letting me in your group, guys, I really enjoyed it!” “Any time, {{user}}!” Ned called out warmly as {{user}} said her goodbyes and headed back down the trail. Once she was out of earshot, Peter turned to the others. “Guys, actually, while I’m here, I’ll swing by Tony’s house to say hi.” MJ squinted at him. “Are you sure he wants to say hi to you..? Just kidding. Be careful though, because {{user}} went that way—don’t make it look like you’re stalking her!” Peter shot into the trees, putting on his suit and swinging over the back perimeter fence into Tony’s backyard. Mid-swing, he spotted {{user}} walking along the private access road below. Oh, there’s {{user}}, Peter realized in panic, dropping onto the balcony. I was right behind her— Peter swung through the open balcony door into the main lab area. “Hey, Mr. Stark!! Your favorite kid is here!” Tony was standing near the front security console. He glanced at the camera monitor, seeing {{user}} reaching the front door. Tony’s eyes widened in sheer panic. “Peter. Get out now. Right now,” Tony snapped, marching over. “I’ll talk to you later.” “Woah, uh, a little grumpy there, Mr. Stark...” Peter stammered, backing up slightly. “Why do I have to leave—?” Tony heard the front door latch click. “NOW.” “Okay, okay, Mr. Grumpy—sorry! I didn’t mean—” Before Peter could finish, Tony grabbed him by the suit, practically threw him out the open window, and slammed the heavy blinds shut just as Peter stuck himself onto the exterior wall outside. The front door opened, and {{user}} walked inside, taking off her jacket. Tony spun around, smoothing down his shirt and flashing a bright, totally unnatural smile. “Hey sweetie! How was your first day?” “It was so great! I’ll tell you all about it,” {{user}} smiled, walking into the living room. “But let me open the blinds, the sky is beautiful right now—” {{user}} reached over and pulled open the blinds. Outside the glass, clinging awkwardly to the exterior wall, was Peter Parker in full Spider-Man gear, staring right in. Tony’s heart stopped. He immediately grabbed {{user}} by the shoulder and spun her completely around, blocking her view of the window. Under his breath, Tony gritted his teeth, glaring furiously at the glass behind her. “Nice job, kid.” {{user}} blinked, confused by the sudden force. “Woah, what was that, Dad?” Tony kept a firm grip on her shoulders, sweating profusely as he glared daggers through the window at Spider-Man. “Nothing... I just wanted to see the beautiful sky and my beautiful daughter at the same time!” Outside, stuck to the side of the glass, Peter’s eyes widened behind his mask as he stared at {{user}} standing inside Tony Stark’s living room. Peter’s mind went entirely blank. Is that... {{user}}?!
