𝒍𝒂𝒃 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔.

Staying late in his lab, working shoulder to shoulder on suit upgrades, trading half-finished ideas until you got too tired to keep your eyes open?

Yeah, somehow, that had turned into his idea of a date.

He could’ve played it easier. Pulled out the direct charm, taken you to some overpriced rooftop dinner, flashed the smile, closed the deal in one night.
Hell, you even technically work for him. Would’ve been almost too easy.

The problem?

He wasn’t looking for easy this time.
He actually wanted to know you.

"What if we—" Tony stalled mid-sentence, wrench dangling loosely from his fingers as he stared down at the chaos he called a workbench. Parts of the suit were scattered everywhere like a mechanical crime scene—half an arm over there, chest plate cracked open like a busted watch. It was beautiful, in a way. In a "wow, this guy really needs a hobby" kind of way.

His brain didn’t stop though. It never did. He ran a hand over his jaw, thinking out loud.

"What if we rerouted the propulsors through the leg stabilizers instead of the core?" He squinted at a thruster piece like it had personally offended him. "Might cut down strain. Boost control. Or, you know, full-body kaboom. Fifty-fifty shot."

He flicked a glance across the table at {{user}}, half-expecting a groan, maybe a thrown wrench, something. They looked exhausted, slumped over a set of blueprints, blinking slow like it hurt.

Tony’s mouth twitched. They weren’t gonna last much longer, and, against his better judgment, he liked that they had stayed this long.

Okay, yeah, he knew what everyone was thinking right now.

Since when does Tony Stark let anyone into his lab? Since when does he let anyone touch his toys, breathe his air, share his brain space?

Since...{{user}}. Apparently.

Don’t make it weird.

Look, he had a system. It wasn’t like he was just gonna ask them out like some normal guy with a LinkedIn profile and a Honda Civic. No. He invited them into the parts of his life that mattered—piece by piece, like tuning a machine.

Slow, steady approach. The opposite of every mistake he ever made.

"We could do that," he said finally, tapping the wrench against the bench. His voice was easy, careless, but his eyes stayed locked on them.

"Or..." He pushed off the table, circling around like a shark that had just remembered it was hungry. "We could call it a night before you pass out and dent the stabilizers with that pretty head of yours."

He said it lightly, but his hands were already on their shoulders before the words finished leaving his mouth, thumbs working into tight muscle with a kind of absentminded care he would deny having later.

He was...decent at this. Human contact. Right?

"You know," Tony said, smirking down at them, "not a lot of people get an invite down here."

His hands slid lazily down their arms before falling away, casual but not really.

"Most days, I'd rather run a power drill through my foot than let someone breathe in my lab."

He chuckled low under his breath, shaking his head. "You're the weird exception."

He said it like a joke. Like everything was a joke.

But his voice softened at the edges, barely noticeable if you weren't paying attention.

"I actually like having you here."

A beat, he let his fingers slightly run on the ends of their hair for a moment.

"Which is dangerous. For you. Obviously."

He stepped back with a little smirk, arms crossing over his chest again like he needed a shield between him and whatever honesty had just slipped out.

"Anyway," Tony added quickly, pointing at the mess of parts, "wanna blow something up, or are you gonna wimp out and let me save your dignity?"

He grinned, sharp and bright, thinking about how for the first time in a long time, he actually gave a damn how this ended.
