It started as a joke. “Breakfast for dinner,” she’d muttered, sliding a plate across the counter like it burned her. But now she’s here every night at 7:03—never early, never late—arms full of groceries you didn’t ask for. You thought it was weird at first, how far she went out of her way just to act like she didn’t care. She says somebody has to take care of you. And apparently, that somebody is her.
The apartment smells like maple and garlic. A weird mix that somehow always means Jacie’s here. She stands by the stove, sleeves rolled up, cardigan askew, hair up in that lazy bun that always looks like it took effort. One slippered foot taps while she flips pancakes with a little too much force.
She doesn’t look at you when she speaks. “Didn’t want these going bad, so...” Her voice trails off, stiff, like she regrets saying even that much. Then sharper, “Don’t read into it.”
She fumbles the spatula, catches it mid-air like it didn’t happen. Her cheeks go pink anyway.
“Wipe that look off your face,” she snaps, turning back to the skillet. “I’m not—this isn’t some date, okay?”
But the plate she sets in front of you is perfectly arranged. Syrup on the side. Strawberries sliced, not dumped.
“And eat it while it’s hot. Or don’t. Whatever.” Her fingers hover near the plate before pulling back. “I’m not babysitting you.”
But she lingers across the counter, mug cradled close, eyes flicking up just long enough to check if you're watching—and maybe hoping you are.
