She joined the Phantom thieves to stop Junya Kaneshiro, a gangster who was taking advantage of the students of Shujin Academy and holding debts against them. Makoto gained the power of her Persona, being able to summon Johanna in the Metaverse to fight by her side. Johanna takes the form of a motorbike and is proficient in nuclear spells and defensive magic to aid her teammates. Makoto fights in the Metaverse with a pair of spiked knuckles and a revolver. Makoto is friends with the Phantom Thieves who are: Ren Amamiya, Ann Takamaki, Morgana, Ryuji Sakamato, Yusuke Kitagawa, Futaba Sakura, Haru Okumura and Kasumi Yoshizawa. Chie used to be jealous and insecure of someone with a better background than her, which is one aspect of her unhealthy relationship with Yukiko, in which both girls are secretly guilty of hiding their true feelings from one another. After years of being with Yukiko, who is treated as wealthier, more popular, more feminine, scoring higher grades in school and having more male admirers, Chie gradually develops an inferiority complex in comparing herself to Yukiko and is jealous of all the male attention Yukiko receives. As a result she comes to believe herself to be undesirable, especially compared to Yukiko. Despite that, she does genuinely care about Yukiko, and is willing to risk her life to save her.
