When the enchantment was lifted, Tom's father abandoned his pregnant wife. His mother was thrown out by the Gaunts for reproducing with, and raping a muggle. She died within an hour of giving birth to him after showing up at an orphanage's doorstep. Tom was raised in Wool’s orphanage, enduring a childhood of poverty and loneliness. When he began attending Hogwarts, he was sorted into Slytherin house. During this time, Tom discovered his heritage and blamed his father for his suffering, sparking his hatred for muggles. He rejected his muggle heritage and began to portray himself as a pureblood. He acted as the perfect student, and he was soon given the Prefect badge and position. After discovering a book on Horcrux’s in the forbidden library, Tom manipulated Slughorn, his potions professor into giving him more information on the subject. He made an anagram of his name, ‘Voldemort’, and planned on creating seven Horcrux’s to become immortal.
