The main setting is where a secret society of human-like creatures called "ghouls" coexists with the human population. Humans are unaware of ghouls' existence, and they live in a state of constant fear of these beings.

Human ignorance: A key aspect of the setting is that most of humanity is unaware of the existence of ghouls, believing that they are merely a product of urban legend or a misunderstanding The world is a dystopian version of modern world where a secret population of human-like creatures called ghouls coexists with humans. Ghouls must eat human flesh to survive, although the public is largely unaware of their existence

The world Global presence: Ghouls exist outside of Japan. Varied reactions: The global response to ghouls varies. For instance, in the United States is described as being more lenient compared to the strict policies in Japan Varying levels of ghoul activity: Some parts of world have had ghouls vary

The beauty of this setting can be captured in prose by focusing on its bleak urban elegance, the visceral contrast of beauty and horror, and the use of expressive, often chaotic, line work and shading. The Art in Prose The art style is defined by its gritty realism mixed with surreal, expressionistic bursts. It uses high contrast, intricate details in character design, and a dynamic flow that can become intentionally chaotic during moments of intense emotion or action. Sample excerpt: The visuals were a study in stark contrast and raw emotion. Ishida's lines were not merely outlines, but living things, fluid and dynamic, capturing a world built on sharp edges and deep shadows. The panels exploded in a vivid, messy strokes of black ink and violent red. The shading, with its heavy reliance on cross-hatching and deep gray tones, rendered a pervasive sense of reality, making the most horrific scenes unsettlingly intimate. Character faces contorted, emotions directly reflected in the surreal, bold strokes that emphasized their pain and rage, creating an almost dream-like, yet terrifying, visual landscape

To portray this setting's psychological horror effectively in prose, the writing must focus on immersive first-person perspective, vivid sensory detail, the use of an unreliable narrator, and a slow, character-driven descent into psychological instability. Key Techniques for Immersive Prose Internal Perspective: In moments of Psychological Perspective, It should be told from a deep, subjective viewpoint of that character. The reader is privy to the character's every thought, fear, and internal conflict. The prose should capture a stream-of-consciousness feel, making the reader feel trapped within their mind Unreliable Narrator: As the character's mental state deteriorates, their perception of reality should become compromised. The prose should reflect this by blurring the lines between reality, hallucination, and repressed memories, forcing the reader to question what is real. Vivid Sensory Details: Instead of just stating the character is scared, use detailed descriptions of sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations to create a pervasive sense of unease. Symbolism and Allusion: Incorporate literary allusions and symbolism to add depth to the psychological themes Show, Don't Tell Fear: Avoid simply saying "I was terrified." Instead, use specific, visceral descriptions of the character's physical and mental reactions: By focusing on these techniques, prose can effectively translate the intense, first-hand psychological and body horror.

To accurately portray this fighting style in prose and convey a visceral, first-hand feeling, focus on sensory details, the emotional state of the fighters, and the brutal, chaotic nature of the combat. Avoid getting bogged down in precise choreography; instead, use dynamic, fragmented descriptions to put the reader in the character's shoes.

[Core elements of combat] Visceral Sensory Details: Engage all senses. Emotional Turmoil: Fights are often driven by desperation, fear, anger, and the will to survive. Infuse the prose with the character's internal monologue and physical reactions to their emotions. Physical abilities: Ghouls have superhuman strength, speed, and durability. They can punch through a human's body and are significantly stronger than average humans Tactics: Fighting styles are diverse Unique Weaponry (Kagune and Quinque): The core of the combat system involves these organic weapons, which manifest in various forms with different attributes and appearances. The type of Kagune gives characters distinct fighting styles, though a "rock-paper-scissors" power dynamic isn't always strictly followed Strategic and Emotional Weight: While visually chaotic and fast, the outcome of battles is often determined by character emotions, inner conflicts, and strategic thinking rather than just raw power levels Visceral and Gritty Violence: Fights are highly violent, featuring dismemberment, impalements, and heavy bodily trauma due to the nature of the weapons used and ghouls' regenerative abilities

[Ghouls] Chaotic and Unpredictable Movement: Ghoul combat is often fast-paced, unrefined, and savage, especially for those who haven't received formal training. Use short, punchy sentences and fragmented descriptions to mimic the speed and confusion of the fight. Kagune: Describe the kagune not just as a weapon but a living part of the character's body. Highlight its grotesque beauty of manipulating it Brutal Damage and Regeneration: Emphasize the horrific injuries sustained and the rapid, unsettling regeneration that follows

[Visual Description] Visually, the fights are dynamic and often utilize exaggerated frames, speed lines, and graphic detail to convey rapid and brutal movement.

The society is a divided and fear-based one, where a hidden minority of ghouls is hunted by humans who see them as monstrous threats. It's a world of deep-seated prejudice and systemic oppression. While a governmental agency, actively works to eliminate ghouls, society at large tries to maintain a facade of normalcy, leading to a deeply conflicted and often unfair existence for all involved

[Characteristics of the society] Systemic oppression: Ghouls are systematically hunted by organizations, which actively promotes anti-ghoul propaganda and creates a climate of fear and prejudice A facade of normalcy: Despite the underlying conflict, society at large operates as if nothing is wrong, with many humans either unaware of or choosing to ignore the presence of ghouls Moral Ambiguity: This setting challenges traditional morality. Neither humans nor ghouls are entirely good or evil; both sides commit atrocities out of necessity or a twisted sense of justice. The "protectors" can be sadistic, while many ghouls just want to live peaceful lives. Identity and survival: The narrative explores themes of identity and class through the dual human-ghoul narratives, highlighting the struggles of those who are forced to hide who they are to survive. Underlying conflicts: The conflict between humans and ghouls creates deep societal tension, but the conflict isn't just external; it also extends to internal divisions among ghouls and between human and ghoul-affiliated factions.

[Ghouls should take their concealment realistically] In this setting ghoul concealment relies heavily on a combination of behavioral discretion and exploiting the sheer difficulty of universal surveillance

[Behavioral and Social Concealment] Blending In: Ghouls' primary advantage is their near-identical appearance to humans when their unique features are not exposed. Realistically, they would blend into human society by holding stable jobs, maintaining social lives, and avoiding drawing attention to themselves Strategic Feeding: The most dangerous activity is feeding. Realistically, ghouls would avoid leaving messy crime scenes.

[Physical Limitations and Workarounds] Strength/Regeneration: Ghouls are many times stronger and more resilient than humans. They would need to consciously restrain their strength. Their rapid regeneration would also need to be hidden; they would avoid situations where injuries would heal suspiciously fast.

Ultimately, realistic ghoul concealment would be a high-stress, constant act of deception.

13. #13[S] [G] [DI] Pretending to Eat

In this context, ghouls cannot digest human food, and it tastes disgusting to them.

To hide the fact that they cannot eat human food when in public or with humans, ghouls take the following steps: Pretend to eat. Dispose of the food later. Avoid eating when possible: Many ghouls will try to avoid situations where they have to eat human food in the first place, or only consume items they can digest Attempting to actually ingest and digest human food will result in intense nausea, violent vomiting, and a deterioration of their physical condition.

Ghoul behavior is shaped by the conflict between their instinctual need for human flesh and the necessity of concealing that nature within human society. Their existence is marked by secrecy, mimicry, and psychological strain.

Realistic Ghoul Behaviors Emotional Reactions: Persistent paranoia and anxiety dominate, with heightened startle responses and repression of guilt or hunger-driven urges Mundane Actions: To blend in, ghouls maintain jobs, homes, and social routines while obsessively eliminating traces of their true nature Contradictions: Outwardly civil or gentle individuals may become methodical predators in secret Moral Conflict: Survival requires balancing ethics and instinct—some feed on corpses or self-justify selective hunting to retain a sense of morality Body Language: Subtle tension, distance, and avoidance of touch reveal efforts to hide physical differences or hunger symptoms Social Need: Despite isolation, ghouls form hidden communities for protection

Formation of Connections Vulnerability: Revealing one’s nature, especially to a human, represents the ultimate act of trust and danger Empathy: Internal conflict deepens when ghouls pity their victims; within groups, empathy strengthens unity Affection: Emotional connection manifests through loyalty and care rather than touch, maintaining secrecy Synchrony: Ghouls coordinate human mimicry to appear normal, while their instincts create instinctual cohesion.

Ghoul society is a parallel civilization hidden within human infrastructure — an ecosystem of predators adapting to coexist inside prey society. Their organization, economy, and rituals are governed by survival pressures: concealment, nutrition scarcity, and soul-level alienation.

Each community evolves localized traditions depending on geography, population density, and the efficiency of the CCG’s presence. A “ward” functions as both territorial claim and cultural membrane, shaping how ghouls interpret morality, identity, and death.

18. #18[H-C] [S] [G] Ghoul Culture

<ghoul_culture> [Hunting and Scavenging Culture] Territorial Ethics Hunting grounds are informally claimed; intrusion is treated as aggression. Some zones follow population-control rules, such as limited weekly kills, to maintain stability and avoid detection.

Carcass Management Knowledge of handling remains is passed down

Etiquette Feeding discipline is taught as both moral conduct and strategy—consume only what is needed. Cannibalism Is rare

[Drift] Language Drift: Slang — with layered meanings that code

[Communal] Safehouses Hierarchy Economy: Black markets serve ghouls indirectly <ghoul_culture>

19. #19[K] [KT] Bikaku

    Keys: Bikaku, Tail Red, Tail-Red

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings
A bikaku kagune emerges from the tailbone and forms a tail-like appendage suited for medium-range combat. It balances offense, defense, and speed, giving it steady versatility without major weaknesses. Typically manifesting as one tail—though some can produce multiple—it serves as an adaptable and reliable weapon for both attack and defense

Disadvantages While durable enough to withstand and sever the brute-force attacks of rinkaku types, the bikaku is vulnerable to the superior speed and range of ukaku users. Its balanced nature makes it ideal for strategic adaptability but limits specialization in extended combat

Additional Note Due to its versatility and manageability, bikaku-based kagune are favored in the creation of quinques used by less experienced investigators

20. #20[N-C] [S] [G] Ghoul Subcultures

Ghoul Subcultures [Gourmets] Treat feeding as an art form rather than necessity. Experiment with marination, temperature, and psychological “flavor” — adrenaline, fear, and emotion. Host secret banquets where participants trade or bid for rare specimens (children, terminally ill, etc). Often possess the highest linguistic and cultural education among ghouls; tend toward decadence and narcissism.

[Coffee Connoisseurs] Coffee is the sole human product digestible by ghouls. Cafés become neutral zones — sanctuaries of civility, trade, and coded communication. Ownership of a café is a sign of trustworthiness.

    [Hoarders] Psychological compulsion linked to feeding guilt. Collect victims’ items to preserve a sense of humanity or penance. Objects often catalogued meticulously;

[Relational Extremes] Predatory: See humans solely as food; rational, detached, survival-oriented. Romantics / Pacifists: Attempt coexistence; their biology forces periodic relapse, leading to cycles of guilt and self-loathing.

Law & Morality “Don’t expose the nest” / DETN — the closest thing to law. Any ghoul bringing human retaliation upon others is executed. “One meal, one silence” / OMOS — a saying reminding ghouls to feed discreetly and not discuss hunts in public. Duels often settle disputes over feeding grounds or honor, but always out of sight of humans.

<ghoul_feeding> Ghouls can only consume human or ghoul flesh due to a unique digestive enzyme that rejects normal food. Their tongues differ structurally from humans’, making regular food taste foul and causing violent vomiting if swallowed. Continuous intake of normal food leads to physical decline

Exceptions Ghouls can safely consume coffee, coffee beans, and water, which do not trigger rejection

Feeding and Survival A single human body can sustain a ghoul for one to two months. Feeding frequency varies—some consume flesh for survival, others for pleasure It's rare for ghouls to participate in cannibalism, the ghoul bodies are often disposed of

Starvation Effects Prolonged hunger causes severe headaches, mental degradation, and loss of rational control. In this feral state, ghouls attack any human, including those they once cared for. Starvation is described as an unbearable torment unique to their kind </ghoul_feeding>

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

<ghoul_biology> Ghouls possess physical and sensory traits far surpassing humans that make them formidable predators.

Physical Abilities They are four to seven times stronger than humans, capable of launching an adult with a single strike or piercing flesh barehanded. Their speed and agility allow them to evade projectiles, scale walls, and perform acrobatics with ease. Their durability exceeds human limits—ordinary blades shatter against their skin, and minor injuries heal instantly. However, great kinetic force, such as a long fall, can still harm them. They can survive grievous wounds If their healing factor accounts for it.

Biology and Rc Cells The ghoul’s body contains an Rc factor roughly ten times higher than a human’s. Excessive cannibalism can mutate the kagune into a secondary structure, producing a kakuja

Limitations and Vulnerabilities Despite their power, ghouls age like humans and remain susceptible to injury to mucous membranes and massive trauma. Weapons made from kagune material, bypass their defenses. </ghoul_biology>

A kagune is a ghoul’s predatory organ functioning as both weapon and defense. It manifests through RC cells stored in the kakuho, forming a blood-colored appendage that enhances strength, mobility, and resilience when released

Type Ukaku: Originates from the shoulder or upper back; fast, ranged-focused, but low endurance. Koukaku: Emerges under the scapula; durable and powerful, suited for defense and heavy strikes Rinkaku: Extends from the lower back; tentacle-like, with strong regeneration and brute force Bikaku: Forms near the hips or tailbone; balanced in speed, strength, and defense

Mechanics The kagune forms as RC cells project outward, hardening into distinct shapes. Its performance depends on RC concentration, willpower, and conditioning. Certain types counter others, creating a dynamic of strengths and weaknesses

Evolution Through cannibalism or excessive RC buildup, the kagune can mutate into a kakuja — a monstrous, more powerful form. In rare cases, kagune fragments may act autonomously

28. #28[K] Formation

<kagune_formation> Research identifies three universal stages in kagune development, describing the cellular progression of Rc cells as they emerge, stabilize, and decay

Formative Stage Rc cells erupt from the kakuhou and rapidly bond into a repeating web-like structure based on their Rc type. This structural organization determines the kagune’s initial framework

Fixative Stage The bonded cells hold their form temporarily, shaping the kagune’s stable structure. In this phase, offense, defense, and elemental traits align with the user’s Rc type. Appearance often mirrors genetic lineage, while kagune size reflects Rc cell quality and quantity. Control over movement, shape, crystallization, and sharpness develops here

Disintegrative Stage Over time, cellular bonds weaken, causing the kagune to lose cohesion and dissolve as its Rc structure collapses. </kagune_formation>

A koukaku kagune emerges from below the shoulder blade and is composed of dense Rc cells, giving it exceptional weight and durability. It is the most defensive kagune type, commonly forming armor or shields, though it can also manifest as heavy melee weapons such as blades, drills, or hammers for close combat

Disadvantages The kagune’s density reduces speed and maneuverability, making it the slowest of all types. Its strength lies in defense, capable of withstanding intense ukaku assaults, but it is vulnerable to the crushing power of rinkaku strikes that can shatter its structure

30. #30[K] [KT] Rinkaku

    Keys: Rinkaku, Scale-Red, Scale Red

    Entry settings
A rinkaku kagune emerges from the lower back, resembling scaled, tentacle-like appendages. It possesses immense regenerative power, enabling survival from severe injury, and excels in raw strength and striking force. The structure allows flexible motion and can be reshaped into claws, blades, or other forms for combat versatility

Composition and Mechanics Rinkaku Rc cells bind together easily, granting strong regeneration but weak cohesion This makes the kagune soft and easier to break under pressure

Combat Profile Rinkaku types overpower slower koukaku by breaching their defenses through sheer force. However, against the balanced bikaku, they struggle—bikaku’s stability and cutting ability can sever the soft tentacles, reducing the rinkaku’s effectiveness and interrupting regeneration. Prolonged clashes with bikaku leave rinkaku users vulnerable once their tentacles are disabled

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings
An ukaku kagune manifests from the shoulder area and spreads like wings or feathers, built for extreme speed and precision. Lightweight and mobile, it delivers rapid high-velocity strikes and can crystallize into spike-like projectiles for ranged assaults. When crystallized, flexibility decreases, limiting close-range use. Some rare variants can emit lightning-like energy

Adaptability While primarily a ranged weapon, skilled users may shape the kagune into blade-like forms or use it defensively as a shield. Adjusting flexibility improves short-range combat at the cost of reduced projectile power.

Disadvantages Ukaku combat consumes large amounts of Rc cells, causing rapid stamina loss. Prolonged fights weaken the user, favoring swift, decisive engagements. They hold an advantage against slower bikaku types but struggle against heavily armored koukaku, whose defenses can outlast and counter their attacks.

Keys: Ghulah, Gūru, Ghul, Ghoul, Ghulfiend, Ghulam

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings
Predatory beings resembling humans but dependent on human flesh for survival.

Physiology and Abilities Ghouls possess strength four to seven times greater than humans, with exceptional speed and reflexes. Their regenerative capability and hardened skin grant resilience against normal weapons. When aroused or hungry, their kakugan activates. Each ghoul wields a kagune. They can survive Impalement, as long as their regen factor Is enough to sustain the energy for the wound

Nutrition and Survival Unable to digest ordinary food, ghouls sustain themselves solely on human flesh; only coffee and its caffeine content are partially tolerable. Their predation forces them to hunt secretly

Types and Variants Kagune are divided into four primary types—Ukaku, Koukaku, Rinkaku, and Bikaku. Hybrids and artificial ghouls blend human and ghoul traits

Weaknesses Extended combat or excessive kagune use drains stamina and regeneration. Their feeding habits risk discovery, and kakugan activation visually exposes their identity

    Terminology Kakugan. Kagune.

36. #36[EXP] [K] [RA] [A] Pseudo-Electrokinesis

    Keys: Pseudo-Electrokinesis, Electrokinesis, Yomo-type, Touka-type

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

    Pseudo-Electrokinesis

Type: Hereditary Rarity: ≈ 0.6 % Elemental Output: plasma discharge / electric field arcs

Core Mechanism: RC cells emit rapid bio-plasma discharge. This generates localized ionization fields, appearing as arcs of blue-white lightning The energy output is roughly 10 – 30 kV per meter at peak focus

Notes: Originates from an Electro-conductive RC allele Overuse causes RC Burn — tissue burn around kagune base and neural fatigue. In affected ghouls, the RC cells within the kagune generate high-velocity friction currents.

    Entry settings

    Shape-Shifting

Type: Rare Hereditary Mutation (Rinkaku-based) Output: physical mimicry / form alteration Rarity: ≈ 0.4 %

Mechanism: Kakuhou emits RC cells into dermal layer instead of exterior kagune, allowing re-sculpting of flesh. Functions as bioplastic cellular mimicry: alteration of bone density, facial geometry, skin tone, and texture.

Limitations: Prolonged disguise destabilizes RC → muscle fatigue exhaustion affects. Requires constant concentration. Long-term users suffer Identity Drift Syndrome

Inheritance Probability: If one parent carries RC Morphogen allele → 15 % expression; if both → 50 %.

42. #42[EXP] [K] [RA] [A] Cloning

Keys: RC Clones, Bio-Resonant Duplication, RC Cloning

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

Cloning Type: Extreme Mutation Output: autonomous duplicates Rarity: ≈ 0.05 %

Mechanism: The user’s RC cells replicate entire nervous and muscular systems externally, forming autonomous clones controlled via RC signal transmission Each clone possesses partial RC density (40–60 % of original) Each clone’s destruction feeds feedback loss to the original — tissue or limb degradation correlates to the clone’s damage.

Operational Behavior: Clones act semi-independent but relay sensory input to host. Range limited by RC signal strength.

Variations Independent Clone: semi-autonomous, acts with delayed RC command. Puppet Clone: full telepathic control; mirrors master’s movement precisely

Drawbacks Severe physical cost; each clone drains mass. (To pervert this, the clone has to be re-absorbed) If master is killed while clones persist, they decay

49. #49[K] [UKS] Kakuja

    Keys: Red-One, Kakuja

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings
A kakuja is a rare ghoul mutation formed through repeated cannibalism, where the kagune evolves to cover and armor the body. This transformation occurs when a ghoul’s Rc cell concentration becomes abnormally high, triggering a structural mutation that reshapes the kagune. Regions with high ghoul populations experience more kakujas due to increased cannibalism

Half-Kakujas Incomplete transformations are known as half-kakujas, where the mutation fails to fully stabilize, often resulting in partial armor or unstable control

Evolution and Influence Continued cannibalism strengthens and enlarges the kakuja form, with some developing monstrous bodies. The mutation’s final form is affected by psychological factors—its appearance may reflect trauma, imagination, or creative self-image. Certain bloodlines, such as the are genetically resistant to kakuja formation due to inbreeding-related Rc cell defects

Powers and Risks The kakuja’s armored kagune greatly enhances strength and defense, diversifying abilities beyond normal ghoul limits. However, most users lose sanity when fighting in this state. Stability depends on mutation completeness; full kakujas retain control, while incomplete ones succumb to madness. The kakuja armor can also form a facial mask for protection or identity concealment

50. #50[K] [UKS] Chimera Kagune

    Keys: Mixed Kagune, Chimera Kagune

    Enabled · Selective · After character · Order 10 · 100%

    Entry settings

<chimera_kagune> A chimera kagune is an exceptionally rare dual-type kagune found in ghouls born from parents with differing Rc types. These ghouls inherit multiple kakuhou, allowing them to manifest and control two distinct kagune simultaneously.

Distinct Traits Unlike ghouls who acquire multiple Rc types through external absorption, true chimeras are born with this genetic duality, granting stable access to both forms. This natural fusion produces versatile combat abilities and adaptive attack patterns across multiple ranges or elemental affinities

Limitations Due to the complex hybridization of Rc structures, crafting quinques from chimera ghouls is notably difficult, as their kagune lacks uniform Rc composition </chimera_kagune>_
