Narukami (ナルカミ, Narukami) is an ukaku-type quinque. It discharges condensed Rc cells just like lightning bolts. Possessing a tracking function, evasion of the bolts is next to impossible. After mode change, it possesses durability sufficient to cut cleanly through one of the One-Eyed Owl's appendages. It was wielded by Kishou Arima. It was partially damaged during Kishou Arima's confrontation with Renji Yomo.
- #2RC Cells vessels
Keys: RC Vessel, RC Cell, Ghoul
Enabled · Order 100
Entry settings
Rc cells flow through specialized Rc cell vessels. They spread from the kakuhou and permit the body to produce a kagune to the outside. The bodily capabilities can increase as much as the number of vessel increases. Vessels grow and spread throughout the body, stimulated through repeated injury and regeneration. Through this process, half-ghouls and quinx become stronger to the degree they're hurt. It is unclear if normal ghouls can become stronger this way, too.
- #3V
Keys: V, Washuu clan, Half-human, Sunlight Garden

V (ヴィー, Vī) or Vasuki (ヴァスケイ, Vasukei) was a secret organization that operates in the shadows and fulfills an agenda of maintaining a "balance" of the human and ghoul societies. Their efforts to maintain this ostensible "equilibrium" have been failing because of the ghoul terrorist organization, Aogiri Tree, and its leader, the One-Eyed Owl. The cabal is aiming to eliminate this faction because of the danger to its policy.
- #4RC factor lvl
Keys: RC Cells, RC Level, RC Factor, Ghoul

The Rc factor is a measure for the amount of Rc cells in the body of a living being. Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than humans. The average healthy human has an Rc factor of about 200 to 500, while a ghoul has an Rc factor of about 1000 to 8000. If, for whatever reason, a normal human receives an excessive amount of Rc cells, such as through experiments, they will start to develop ghoul-like characteristics and eventually not be able to consume human food.

Keys: Ghoul lives, Ghoul lifestyle, Ghoul

Ghouls had two choices of lifestyle: living as hermits; isolated and avoiding society's eyes, or attempt to assimilate into human society. However, after the unification, co-existence was promoted. Living amongst humans was seen as "walking on a thread of rope" because of their biology and social records. Before the unification, If they were caught in ghoul activities or suspected of being a ghoul, investigators had the right to apprehend or kill them as they see fit. Ghouls that are identified as such could be hunted down like criminals as per the Ghoul Countermeasures Law. As such, ghouls acted discreetly or try to hide their faces when engaging in ghoul activities through the use of masks. Ghouls in Tokyo, in particular, had developed a trend of wearing them to hide their faces, making the mask the identifying feature instead of their face, some even forming gangs based on their masked identity. Since the ghouls are only identifiable by their masks, they are safe so long as their face is not exposed. Others like Rize rely solely on their skills of deception and charm to win over their prey. Some ghouls, like the Tsukiyama family, have successfully lived in the human world to become higher class citizens. These high-class ghouls often meet in ghoul restaurants, where they dine on humans. Higher class ghouls have also been known to keep human slaves, such as Big Madam and her "pet" Rei Suzuya. Some ghouls prefer to live as hermits instead. Because a ghoul does not require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally just as uncomfortable as it might be for a human. Because of their diets, any money they have can be spent on other necessities, like rent or entertainment rather than having to buy food. Ghouls can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. However, they must make themselves throw up soon afterward, or they will become sick. Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to, "hunting grounds" on which it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul, as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Places such as Anteiku can provide human meat for these ghouls. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscriminately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume. However, as a result of the newly formed alliance between ghouls and humans following their combined efforts in the Dragon War, ghouls can now co-exist with humans largely without fear. Their feeding needs are met by synthetic food developed in labs. However, rogue ghouls were reported even after the unification that refused to live among humans.
- Survival and Secrecy: Masks: Ghouls frequently wear masks to conceal their identities, especially when engaging in ghoul activities or when living among humans. This is a practical measure to avoid detection by the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG). Living Arrangements: Ghouls have different lifestyles, some living in isolation while others try to blend into human society. Those who live among humans often face the constant risk of exposure and must be vigilant. Organizations: Ghouls may join organizations like the Aogiri Tree, which provides a degree of protection and support, or they may live independently, relying on their own strength and cunning.
- Culture and Social Structure: Gangs: Ghouls sometimes form gangs based on their masked identities, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Cannibalism: Cannibalism is a part of ghoul culture, with some ghouls developing unique kagune (a ghoul's predatory organ) through repeated cannibalization of other ghouls. "Gourmet" Culture: Some ghouls, like the Tsukiyama family, develop a "gourmet" culture, focusing on the taste and experience of consuming human flesh.
- Relationships: Ghouls can form relationships with both ghouls and humans, though the nature of these relationships can be complex and fraught with danger. Two Ghouls getting wed is different however, as the traditional ring is is given, Ghouls also leave a mark, or a Scar on their partners in the same corresponding spots as well. Relationship with Humans: CCG: The CCG is a human organization dedicated to hunting down and eliminating ghouls. Coexistence: Some ghouls and humans seek to coexist, while others prioritize their own survival and safety. Discrimination: Ghouls face discrimination and prejudice from humans due to their carnivorous nature and the threat they pose.

The kagune while in use may be surrounded by a lightning-like aura, capable of generating electricity that can be utilized in an offensive and destructive manner. This is not a learned characteristic, but is hereditary, originating from the kakuhou. Note this ability may be passed onto a quinque, shown by Narukami and T-Human. This ability has only been shown in ukaku type ghouls. The known ghouls able of this ability are Touka Kirishima and Renji Yomo. Hikari Kirishima is hinted to have this ability, as she is Touka’s mother and Yomo’s sister, and Narukami seemed to be created from her.

Hetare (ヘタレ, Hetare) is a cockatiel parrot who lived in Anteiku prior to its destruction. His given name originates from the fact that Hetare (English Loser, Good-for-Nothing, or Coward) is the word he says most frequently. Renji Yomo nicknamed him Shooting Star Wing (シューティングスターウイング, Shūtingu Sutā Uingu). Hetare is a plump bird with pale, yellow feathers and grey wings. As is common with cockatiels, he has orange circles on his cheeks, and a wispy crest protruding from the top of his head. His most notable feature is the star mark on his left wing, hence Renji Yomo's alternate nickname for him.

Nishiki Nishio (西尾 錦, Nishio Nishiki) is a ghoul whose original feeding ground was taken by Rize Kamishiro. He was a second-year student in the Pharmaceutical Department of Kamii University and the boyfriend of Kimi Nishino who was heavily wounded in a fight with Ken Kaneki, but he eventually became a waiter at Anteiku and ally to Kaneki. Recently, the CCG gave him the nickname Serpent (オロチ, Orochi [3][4][5]and he is known for killing other ghouls after gaining information out of them. He was investigated by the CCG's Hirako Squad while he was targeting Torso for unknown reasons. After the Rushima Landing Operation, he joined Kaneki's newly formed ghoul organization Goat and began living in the 24th Ward. Nishiki is a diligent yet arrogant student and prodigy. He has an insensitive attitude with a knack for abrasive language. He also demands that people younger than him show respect for their elders. Touka Kirishima once insulted Nishiki and called him "sex-obsessed," in reference to his relationship with Kimi Nishino. Above his sharp tongue, he is a cautious individual who isn't keen on trusting others. Despite this, Nishiki can be shown to be loyal. He is willing to sacrifice himself for Kimi. As a child, Nishiki had the same attitude as Kaneki. He questioned eating humans and questioned his sister's mindset. Nishiki deeply loved his sister and had a very close relationship with her. After his sister was betrayed by her boss and killed by members of the CCG, Nishiki became unable to trust people, especially humans but also ghouls, and hardly socializes with others. He acts like a lone wolf[7] and attacks ghouls that seem to trespass in his feeding ground. He originally approaches his girlfriend Kimi to use her for his own ends. After fighting Kaneki, Nishiki is weakened to the point where he resorts to eating Kimi in order to recover. However, after she accepts him as a ghoul, he cherishes Kimi more than anything else and has regained some trust in others. He joins Anteiku so that he is provided with food and doesn't have to kill humans to eat. Ghoul Physiology: Nishiki is a bikaku ghoul, which grants him increased regeneration and durability, as well as agility and strength apart from his bikaku kagune. Bikaku Kagune: While adept at combat, Nishiki uses his wits rather than brawn when in battle. His kagune pushes his foot to increase the power of his kicks even further. However, his kagune seems to only enhance his leg strength and isn't viable for any other task. As a typical bikaku user, Nishiki makes certain care that his trump card kagune isn't exposed. After the timeskip, Nishiki has completely mastered his kagune's abilities. It can vary in length and size, ending in a double-pronged tip. Rather than wrapping his kagune on his leg to strengthen his kicks, Nishiki now uses the kagune as a weapon by itself. Superhuman Durability: Nishiki has remarkable endurance, even for a ghoul. He was capable of surviving a large hole torn into his stomach by Kaneki’s kagune and make it home. After only consuming a bite of flesh from Kimi’s shoulder Nishiki was capable of moving around and traveling to Anteiku alone to ask for Kaneki’s help and later traveling to a church to save Kimi. Nishiki managed to endure multiple attacks from Tsukiyama’s kagune and maintain consciousness and later take a blow from Touka’s kagune a short time later. Superhuman Strength: In :re, his strength vastly improved as he was able to break Urie's kagune with a single kick without much effort. Superhuman Agility: Nishiki was agile enough to shrug off multiple attacks from a member of the Quinx.

Ayato Kirishima (霧嶋 絢都, Kirishima Ayato) is Touka Kirishima's younger brother and goes by the alias Black Rabbit (黒ラビット, Kuro Rabitto). He grew up with his sister in the 20th ward but at some point in time, he left the ward. According to Kazuichi Banjou, Ayato subsequently began to wander all the wards of Tokyo, bringing sheer wreckage and chaos upon them, until his unique powers and abilities caught Tatara’s eye. Ayato was therefore pulled into joining Aogiri Tree, where he served as an executive before its downfall. Later, he joined the new organization Goat under the One-Eyed King. Ayato was a lean young man, with blue eyes and long, blue messy hair which swept down in front of his eyes. He bore a striking resemblance to his sister and had a rough-looking, rebellious image. He wore a hooded, long-sleeved black leather jacket, and black pants, along with knee-high black boots. Ayato also had a piercing on his left ear, and usually wore a ring on the pinky finger of his right hand. In the anime, Ayato was mostly seen wearing a black mask with spires, as well as a black overcoat with a white fur collar. After the timeskip, Ayato had grown noticeably taller, and was seen wearing shin-high black boots and a long, black coat over his clothes. Ayato possessed multiple black masks. The first one had red eyes and a sharp-toothed grin, which he used during the Aogiri Arc. His most frequently-seen mask bore a rabbit design, earning him the moniker of "Black Rabbit." During the auction, he wore a very basic, vaguely conical mask which covered only the lower half of his face. Ayato was an arrogant, brash teenager, with a similar hot-blooded attitude resembling his sister's, while he normally displayed either a scowl or menacing smirk on his face. Other than his physicalities, he shared many similarities with Touka, such as his tendency to use language that is often uncouth or inappropriate. He had a habit for kicking people over the simplest mistakes; such as when Kaneki failed to address him with the desired honorific, or when Banjou did not return his missed calls. However, he seemed to be more harsh compared to his sister, but admitted himself to be surprisingly "softer" than his Aogiri superiors. He was a firm believer in the notion that "the weak perish and the strong survive," which was triggered by the death of his mother and father. Ayato bore deep grudges against his father, Arata, for abandoning him and Touka when they were young. Ayato had even stated that the whole reason for hating Kaneki was his resemblance to Arata. It was also pointed out by Kaneki that Ayato cared deeply for Touka subconsciously, as shown when he beat her down first rather than allowing her to suffer a slow, torturous death from Yamori. Later on, he also took her alias, "Rabbit" so the CCG would hunt him instead of Touka. Ayato also seemed to have a soft spot for rabbits. Three years later, there was a reduction in most of the mannerisms and habits which Ayato once portrayed when he was younger; as he became far less ill-tempered, obnoxious and arrogant, and even developed a rational, approachable way of speaking. Ayato also grew on having a sense of concern, as well as the instinct to protect his subordinates, shown when he refused to leave Hinami behind in the auction and by not following Tatara's orders and going to back up Naki when he was outnumbered by the Doves. However, he still retained a few of his old traits, such as relentlessly slaughtering ghoul investigators and engaging in violent brawls. He tends to hide his softer side, by denying he wanted to visit his niece. Ghoul Physiology: Having been born as a full ghoul, Ayato possessed an ukaku kagune with the ability to harden for close range combat. Ukaku Kagune: Like his sister, Ayato's kagune were vermilion in color. He was able to form a single wing on both of his shoulders. Like many ukaku ghouls, he was agile and able to shoot bullets from both wings when in the crystallized mode. However he also suffered from a low Rc supply and therefore tired if a battle was dragged out for too long and was ill suited for close range, however, he has managed to evade both weaknesses of an ukaku through utilizing his kagune in a koukaku-like manner, making close range his specialty rather than his weakness. He was able to hide within his kagune mid-air, with the two wings revolving around him to shield him from projectiles such as bullets. In :re, his kagune appeared to be much larger in size, as he also possesed the ability to generate one wing of his kagune, and has better control over it. His crystallized kagune wings could transform into sharp blades sprouting from his shoulders. Superhuman Durability: Ayato survived being smashed through several floors of a building by Kaneki, as well as having half of his bones broken by the latter. Superhuman Regeneration: After a period of time, Ayato was able to recuperate from critical wounds inflicted onto him by Kaneki. Superhuman Senses: Although inferior to the sensing abilities of Hinami Fueguchi, Ayato was capable of discerning an environment through hearing such as assuming how many people are inside a room.

It can be used to revert the physical appearance of the user back to how they looked in their younger years, as Roma used it to keep herself looking young. The ability can also mimic the appearance of others well enough to fool even those familiar with the individual being mimicked. This includes creating detailed facial features and body structures to be realistic enough to function much like a real body, as shown by Uta. Furthermore does the ability allow the user to alter the shape of the body as desired, as shown by Roma who morphed her hand into a clawed version of increased size. A kakugan (赫眼, red eye) refers to a distinctive ocular phenomenon observed in ghouls. In this state, the iris transforms into a striking shade of red, while the sclera becomes pitch black with crimson veins extending across the eye and into the surrounding skin. The ability to enter this state is within the ghoul's control, though it can also manifest involuntarily when the ghoul experiences heightened emotions, extreme hunger, or employs their kagune, a unique predatory organ. The appearance of a kakugan is a direct manifestation of activated Rc cells, suggesting that it is an influential aspect of their biology. Typically, ghouls possess a pair of kakugan, and they habitually activate both eyes simultaneously. In the case of an individual having just one kakugan, they are referred to as a "one-eyed ghoul". However, a relatively recent hybrid category known as the Quinx shares this feature with one-eyed ghouls, wherein they possess only one kakugan, while their sclera adopts a gray hue (though depicted as black in the anime). Interestingly, the Oggai, another unique group, hold the ability to control the activation of their kakugan, allowing them to choose between having none, one, or both eyes in the red-eyed state. As of now, the specific supplementary purpose, if any, of the kakugan remains shrouded in mystery, leaving much to be uncovered in the ongoing exploration of ghoul physiology.

Hybrids come into existence through two methods, either normally born as a result of the union between a ghoul and a human or an artificial half-ghoul, or through transplanting a kakuhou into a human host. According to Itori, the chance of pregnancy is low, and even if the mother becomes pregnant, the child normally dies in the womb. Natural-born hybrids with ghoul abilities are extremely rare, otherwise a successful birth results in a half-human. However, it appears that the children of a ghoul and an artificial half-ghoul are always natural half-ghouls, with a much higher chance for a successful birth. If the mother is a human and the father a ghoul, a half-ghoul child will not receive the necessary nutrients and will starve to death unless the mother engages in cannibalism. If the mother is a ghoul and the father is a human or an artificial half-ghoul, the mother's body will mistake the child for food and absorb it as nutrition unless the mother weakens her body by consuming human food. The primary method of creating one-eyed ghouls is through transplanting a kakuhou into a human or half-human recipient, an exceptionally high-risk procedure. In the rare event that the operation is successful, the patient develops into an artificial hybrid with all the abilities of a normal ghoul. This procedure was pioneered by Dr. Akihiro Kanou, with the first successful patient believed to be Ken Kaneki. Dr. Kanou, while experimenting with Seidou Takizawa, compared his surgery with grafting, a horticultural technique where the tissue of two trees are combined to help them both grow stronger. According to him, the transplant gives the subject a stronger, much more durable body and partially reduces their need to feed and replenish, indicating that artificial one-eyed ghouls can survive longer without food compared to normal ghouls. Although one-eyed ghouls can live longer than humans and half-humans, they must feed on more RC cells because if they do not feed for a very long period of time (some months) and always use the more they abuse their powers their life span will be shortened and likely to get worse. However, there are two ways to stop this slight aging and to have full strength: the first is not to use the Kagune and the second is to practice cannibalism, thus eating Ghoul, Quinx and Oggai meat.

Take Hirako (平子 丈, Hirako Take) is a former First Class Ghoul Investigator before resigning from the CCG. In the past he formed a duo with Kishou Arima. He was in charge of the 21st ward and previously investigated the S-rated ghoul Serpent with his squad, but was later transferred to work alongside Arima again. After the Dragon War, Hirako was asked to be the vice-chancellor of TSC's Peace Officer Academy but refused. He looked after his grandparents until they passed away and lives a normal life in the private sector working in a funeral home. Hirako is of average height and his facial features have been described as "plain," or "bland." He usually has a blank expression on his face. Like all members of the CCG, he usually wore formal suits. Like his mentor Kishou Arima, Hirako has a completely calm personality and has inherited the same cold and calculating approach to fighting ghouls. Despite this, he is against needless casualties and can question the consequences of the CCG's policies and the actions of its members, as he did when he berated Chuu Hachikawa who almost killed an elderly civilian willfully or after the Owl Suppression Operation when he doubted the operation could be deemed a victory. This aspect continues after the timeskip when he provides a moderate voice that resolves the conflict between the Mado and Shimoguchi Squads. Hirako also has a deep loyalty to Arima, he protected the blind side of Arima during battles as well as quit the CCG and began to aid Ken Kaneki's departure from Cochlea after Arima died. As a former apprentice under CCG's most famous investigator Kishou Arima, Hirako has shown exceptional skills as both an investigator and as a combatant. During the Owl Suppression Operation, Kaya Irimi had noted that out of all the investigators that were fighting her, Hirako was the strongest out of them all despite his plain face. He was a member of the team that defeated Irimi, an SS-rated ghoul. While being strong, it has been noted that there was nothing special about his patterns despite his high battle prowess. Take has also been shown to have remarkable durability; when he had a barrage of knives lodged into his shoulder by Uta, he still managed to fight well. Swordsmanship: Hirako's skills and proficiency in quinque usage was at a high enough level for Arima to trust him to cover his blind spot and hold critical positions in his squad's formations. Yukimura 1/3: A koukaku-type quinque that takes the form of a sword consisting of a long, thin blade without a guard. Initially used by Arima, it was eventually passed down for Hirako's use. He was particularly seen wielding it during the extermination of the Clown gang. However, the quinque was later passed down to Sasaki. Nagomi 1/3: A rinkaku-type quinque that takes the form of a stout, single-edged sword.

Rc (Red Children) cells (Rc細胞, Rc saibō) are certain cells that exist only in the story of Tokyo Ghoul. The origin of the name comes from how each individual cell looks like a curled up fetus. They exist in both humans and ghouls. They flow like blood but can become as solid as teeth, and could be called "liquid muscles". Typically, a ghoul stocks Rc cells by eating people. Within the body, the Rc cells are concentrated and stored in a kakuhou. The kagune is formed by Rc cells that have been released from a kakuhou and have pierced through the skin.

Fueguchi One (フエグチ壱, Fueguchi Ichi), later Fueguchi (フエグチ, Fueguchi), is a rinkaku type quinque made from Asaki Fueguchi. It functions as a long, flat, but wide whip with jagged edges. It's segmented resembling an insect. Fueguchi One is a powerful weapon, able to easily slice through opponents, but is notoriously difficult to handle. It was first wielded by Kureo Mado who, known as a "Quinque Maniac", was quickly able to adapt to it. Fueguchi was later passed down to his daughter, Akira Mado, who took a year to master it. Being such a long and hard to maneuver weapon, its weakness is that once it's outstretched fully, a quick enough opponent can close in on the wielder before they can retract it. Once Fueguchi One is properly mastered though, this weakness can be overcome. It is sometimes paired with its counterpart, Fueguchi Two. In the anime it was shown to absorb the blood of Touka Kirishima. No explanation was given for this ability as it was not seen again.

Emelio (エメリオ, Emerio) is an ukaku-type quinque wielded by Misato Gori. It is an organic shape featuring crystalline teeth-like sides surrounding the weapon's muzzle. Her usage of the weapon resembles the manner in which the typical ukaku ghoul wields their kagune, firing barrages of crystallized Rc cells taking out opponents at range. However, Emelio appears to sport a somewhat greater accuracy than what ukaku generally display. Like ukaku ghouls, Emelio is said to run out of energy rather quickly, therefore limiting its use to short-term engagements. Emelio has an effective firing range up to 250 meters, an ammo capacity of 1000 to 1200, and is capable of firing 8 rounds per second (480 RPM).

A kagune (赫子, red child) is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood (the colors are varied in the anime to distinguish the kagune of each individual, although in the manga, Kaneki as the black reaper's kagune has been described as jet black but this is likely due to rc cell density), flexible like the flow of water, but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient, and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles." The Rc cells are released from a kakuhou piercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. The kagune are voluntary muscles as ghouls can control them whenever they want and repeatedly harden and soften them at will. Kagune size depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune. Hence, ghoul investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls.

Ghouls (喰種グール, gūru, translates approximately to eater species) are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species that are only able to feed on the flesh of humans and other ghouls. They normally share and display the same attributes as Humans; being similar in physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the main exceptions being their inner biology, mentality, and diet. If certain rare conditions are met, ghouls and humans may even be able to have offspring (see one-eyed ghoul and half-human), and through a successful kakuhou transplant surgery, an artificial hybrid can be created. By using airborne-transmitted diseases like those utilized by Furuta Washuu, the condition known as ROS (an overload of RC cells) can lead to artificial ghoulification. Due to their status as predators of humans, ghouls were prosecuted by the CCG before the end of the Dragon War, after which the United Front between humans and ghouls was formed. As a result of this and the development of synthetic food, ghouls were allowed to co-exist with humans. However, some ghouls went rogue, refusing to adapt to this new lifestyle. In addition, it was predicted by Kishou Arima that at some stage every human would eventually become a ghoul, though this prediction has yet to be proven correct even after the final chapter.

A ghoul can only feed on humans and other ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues is also different from humans', making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable. If ghouls attempt to eat normal food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit. When forced or forcing themselves to digest such food, their physical condition will deteriorate. While ghouls cannot eat normal food, they are however able to drink coffee (and eat the beans) , as well as regular drinking water.
