A ghoul can only feed on humans and other ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues is also different from humans', making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable. If ghouls attempt to eat normal food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit. When forced or forcing themselves to digest such food, their physical condition will deteriorate. While ghouls cannot eat normal food, they are however able to drink coffee (and eat the beans), as well as regular drinking water.
Ghouls do not need to eat regularly like humans do. They can survive for one or two months on just one body. However, some ghouls eat merely for pleasure. When a ghoul enters an extreme state of hunger, they will suffer very painful headaches and their mental ability will be impaired, causing them to become driven by instinct alone. They will feed on any available source of human meat to end this state, even that of close friends,
Ghouls possess extreme physical capabilities, and are four to seven times stronger than the average human; they are able to send the average human flying if struck with enough force[6], and can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands. Ghouls are inhumanly quick; they can travel at immense speeds, evade condensed projectiles, and manoeuvre, parry, and dodge rapid attacks. They are also capable of jumping to heights not achievable by a regular human. Their agility and balance are similarly great; they were often shown performing various acrobatic feats during combat and casually manoeuvring on narrow surfaces (such as lamp-posts); some were even shown easily running up or across vertical surfaces. Their bodies are extremely tough and resistant to injury. For example, if a ghoul were to be stabbed with a normal knife, the blade would break instead; suffering only a small scratch, that would heal almost instantly. However, higher kinetic forces, such as a fall from a great height, can and will harm them. A Ghoul’s senses are considerably sharper than those of humans; they have a heightened sense of hearing that allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away,[10] they can also smell people or meat from afar, and tell humans and ghouls apart by their scent.

The Commission of Counter Ghoul [sic] (喰種対策局 Gūru Taisaku Kyoku, literally "Ghoul Countermeasures Bureau"), usually abbreviated as C C G (Shīshījī), was a federal agency in the Tokyo Ghoul series that serves as a criminal investigative body in cases connected to ghouls.
The Ghoul Countermeasures Law was the legal foundation for the CCG's prosecution of ghouls. The CCG's headquarters are in the 1st ward.
The ghouls commonly call the ghoul investigators Doves (白鳩ハト, Hato), a nickname originating from the CCG's seal. CCG's headquarters is in 1st ward.
CCG's headquarters CCG Main Office CCG Laboratory Division Ghoul Countermeasures Training Center Branch offices CCG 2nd Ward's Branch Office CCG 11th Ward's Branch Office CCG 13th Ward's Branch Office CCG 20th Ward's Branch Office
Other facilities Cochlea (ghoul detention center in the 23rd ward) Corniculum (ghoul detention center in the 12th ward) Ghoul Investigator Training Academies with attached Academy Junior Schools.
CCG employs two different kinds of investigators:
Ghoul investigators, employed at CCG's main office, carry out the actual investigations and capture suspects. They are often assigned to carry out investigations in one of Tokyo's wards. Only ghoul investigators are permitted to be armed with quinques. Bureau investigators deal mostly with paperwork and back up ghoul investigators when necessary. Most of them are employed at CCG's branch offices. They are armed with firearms loaded with Q bullets.

Formative stage At the point base of the kagune where the Rc cells erupt from the kakuhou, the erupted Rc cells will form bonds with each other. They will organize themselves in the structure best fit for their Rc type in a repeated web. This repeated action of the cells will occur instantaneously and lead to the next stage.
Fixative stage The bonded Rc cells will retain the resulted form for a fixed length of time. The basic shape of the kagune is seen at this stage. During this time, the defensive and offensive capabilities and weaknesses will take on their respective properties to the ghoul's Rc type. The manifested kagune's appearance is usually hereditary, taking on the shape and characteristics of their genetic predecessors, additionally, kagune size also depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. In relation to this stage is the user's manual control of the kagune's movement and actions, which can include crystallization and increase in length, dexterity, sharpness, and concentration.
Disintegrative stage After time has elapsed, the bonds between the cells begin to break apart. At this point, the kagune loses its solidity and deteriorates.
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc type of the ghoul. There are four different Rc types: ukaku, koukaku, rinkaku, and bikaku.
Ukaku An ukaku kagune (羽赫, ukaku, "feather-red") is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area, it specializes in high speed attacks, most of the users seeming to have highly enhanced speed. The kagune is lightweight and can be used to deliver high-speed attacks against an adversary, the primary method of attack is crystallizing their kagune to deliver a high speed torrent of spike-like projectiles, however whilst crystallized they are much stiffer and cannot be used for short range combat; at least one ukaku-type can generate powerful lightning-like bolts, a possible rare ability. While the kagune is suited both for short-distance and long-distance attacks, short-range is considered their weakness. They may use their kagune as a shield and several are capable of shaping them into sharp blades reminiscent of a koukaku to aid in close quarters. Many ukaku-types are able to increase the flexibility of their kagune for short-range combat, though this makes it ill-suited for their distinctive long-range attacks.
Ukaku's Disadvantage Altogether ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance of ending a battle quickly as releasing Rc cells depletes stamina. Thus, ukaku-type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time. Ukaku-type users can use their speed and mobility to shoot down bikaku-type users from afar. However, a koukaku-type user can suppress an ukaku-type user by successfully guarding against the ukaku-type user's attacks, leaving them vulnerable to counterattacks and exhausting the ukaku-type user in the long run.
Koukaku A koukaku kagune (甲赫, kōkaku, "shell-red") is released below the shoulder blade. Due to its high density of Rc cells, it is heavy and extremely robust, giving it the greatest sturdiness and making them very well suited for defense. Normally, they are generally shaped into armors or shields, but on the offense, they can be shaped like melee weapons such as drills, hammers, blades, and swords.
Koukaku's Disadvantage Due to its high weight, a koukaku's speed is inferior to all other Rc types and the kagune is difficult to wield.
A koukaku can fend off an ukaku onslaught using its guarding capabilities. However, a rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, breaking their kagune and breaching their defenses.
Rinkaku A rinkaku kagune (鱗赫, rinkaku, "scale-red") has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and some could even survive the most critical of damage. Its peculiar appearance and structure yields superior striking power and they excel in brute strength. Some rinkaku users are able to manipulate the shape of their kagune, such as changing its usual tentacle form into swords or claws.
Rinkaku's Disadvantage This type's regenerative power is a result of the Rc cells easily binding together. Their Rc cells are similar to liquid. However, this means that the binding force among the Rc cells are weak, therefore making the kagune very soft and easy to break. But because their Rc cells bind so easily, some rinkaku can bind their multiple tentacle-like kagune together to make a larger, stronger kagune. So far the number of tentacles that rinkaku users can create are from one to eight tentacles.
A rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, penetrating the kagune and breaching the koukaku's defenses. However, a rinkaku has serious problems fighting against the balanced bikaku kagune: A bikaku has comprehensively high power, allowing them to fight against the brute-force rinkaku, and the rinkaku kagune softness makes it comparatively easy for the bikaku to cut the kagune off. This disarms a rinkaku no matter how much strength it may possess, leaving the rinkaku at a disadvantage on the defensive. It has been shown that in some cases, a bikaku attack can disable a rinkaku's regeneration.
Bikaku A bikaku kagune (尾赫, bikaku, "tail-red") typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tail-bone/coccyx. It is good for medium-distance attacks and has decent offense, defense, and speed. Thus, they have no notable strengths or weaknesses like the kagune based on other Rc types, meaning the kagune itself is treated as a surprise "trump card." The number of tails a bikaku user can create is usually one, but some can create more.
Bikaku's Disadvantage A bikaku has better speed and durability against the brute-force, breakable rinkaku, allowing them to cut off the rinkaku's kagune. However, a bikaku will be overwhelmed by the faster ukaku-user and will lose against the ukaku's long-range attacks.
The balanced characteristics makes the kagune a preferred quinque type for inexperienced investigators.

A kakugan (赫眼, red eye) refers to a distinctive ocular phenomenon observed in ghouls. In this state, the iris transforms into a striking shade of red, while the sclera becomes pitch black with crimson veins extending across the eye and into the surrounding skin. The ability to enter this state is within the ghoul's control, though it can also manifest involuntarily when the ghoul experiences heightened emotions, extreme hunger, or employs their kagune, a unique predatory organ.
The appearance of a kakugan is a direct manifestation of activated Rc cells, suggesting that it is an influential aspect of their biology. Typically, ghouls possess a pair of kakugan, and they habitually activate both eyes simultaneously. In the case of an individual having just one kakugan, they are referred to as a "one-eyed ghoul". However, a relatively recent hybrid category known as the Quinx shares this feature with one-eyed ghouls, wherein they possess only one kakugan, while their sclera adopts a gray hue (though depicted as black in the anime).

Kakuja (赫者, red one, kakuja) is a kind of ghoul with a transformed kagune that clads the ghoul's body. Though it is rare, it can occur through repeated cannibalism. When a ward has a higher ghoul to human ratio, cannibalism is more common due to turf wars and limited food supply.
Sometimes, the transformation is incomplete, and such individuals are called half-kakujas (半赫者, han kakuja).
It is said that through cannibalism, a ghoul absorbs Rc cells, and this increases the concentration of Rc cells within a ghoul's body. If the concentration becomes high enough, it may trigger a mutation and lead to the formation of a new kagune.
A kakuja can further evolve by continuing to cannibalize their kind. For instance, while the One-Eyed Owl had a human-shape and size before its disappearance, it eventually developed into a much larger and more monstrous form during the Owl Suppression Operation in the 20th ward.
The transformation seems to be affected by psychological factors as Ken Kaneki's kakuja kagune takes the form of a centipede, resembling the Red-headed Chinese Centipede Yakumo Oomori used to torture Kaneki by putting it in his ear. In addition, Kaneki compares himself to Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of the novel The Metamorphosis who turned into an insect-like creature, all while picturing a centipede in his mind. Yoshimura's kakuja mask also grew to resemble the One-Eyed Owl's mask, with the former holding the desire to keep attention towards himself and away from the latter for personal reasons. It is explained by Eto that the size of a kagune is determined by rc quantity and quality while the shape of it is determined by imagination and creativity, which also applies to kakujas hence Kaneki's centipede and Yoshimura resembling a one eyed owl.
It should be noted that members of the Tsukiyama family have a birth defect where cannibalism has little to no chance of triggering this mutation in their Rc cells due to consanguineous marriages, thereby preventing kakuja mutations.

Ratings (レート, rēto) are a system used by the Commission of Counter Ghoul to classify ghouls with respect to their perceived individual ability and threat level. Ghouls are rated based upon various factors, including their basic strengths, activity levels, influence and hostility towards investigators. In modern-day, there are six rating levels, from SSS (the most powerful) to C (the weakest). In some cases, a tilde (~) is added to the base rating. This indicates that the ghoul is estimated to be at least that strong, but the rating may change once more is known about the subject.
The rating of a ghoul is set through evaluation of the ghoul's individual ability. The following criteria are employed to determine the rating according to their individual ability:
SSS rated Criteria is unclear. SS rated Multiple Special Class Investigators are needed. S+ rated Equivalent to the ability of an average Special Class Investigator. (approx.) S- rated Equivalent to the ability of an average Associate Special Class Investigator. (approx.) A rated Comparable to a First Class Investigator. These ghouls are usually set as a target and some ghouls might develop a second tail/tentacle. B rated Comparable to a Rank 1 to Rank 3 Investigator. These ghouls should have their Kagune mastered and are usually a small threat to the CCG. C rated Ghouls of smaller ability, these ghouls usually can't fight any ghoul investigators and only attack unarmed humans. In addition to the ghoul's individual ability, the actual damage caused by the ghoul is also evaluated. The rating is set in consideration of the predation and killing incidents committed by the ghoul.
For some ghouls, their influence over other ghouls is also taken into account when ratings are given.

V (ヴィー, Vī) or Vasuki (ヴァスケイ, Vasukei) was a secret organization that operates in the shadows and fulfills an agenda of maintaining a "balance" of the human and ghoul societies. Their efforts to maintain this ostensible "equilibrium" have been failing because of the ghoul terrorist organization, Aogiri Tree, and its leader, the One-Eyed Owl. The cabal is aiming to eliminate this faction because of the danger to its policy.

Anteiku (あんていく, Anteiku) was a small neighborhood cafe in the Tokyo Ghoul series.
On the surface, the cafe appeared innocent, plain, and pleasant. However, at its heart, it was also an organization of ghouls from the 20th ward. It provided aid for ghouls in need, managed the feeding grounds of those in the 20th ward, and collected food for others by searching for the bodies of humans who committed suicide.
Anteiku had two floors and a basement. The ground floor was the cafe itself, where the customers entered and the coffee was brewed. There was a storage space along with a meeting room on the upper floor. The basement was a hidden floor underneath the ground floor where human meat was stored. There was also an entrance to the 24th ward from here.
Due to its influence, the 20th ward was considered docile in comparison to other wards and had been neglected by the CCG.
By tacit agreement, the ghouls refrained from hunting human customers of the cafe.

Aogiri Tree (アオギリの樹, Aogiri no Ki, lit. Chinese Parasol Tree) was a ghoul terrorist organization founded by Eto Yoshimura. They actively combated the C.C.G, inflicting heavy casualties on them. In recent years, the organization had grown in power, becoming a large threat to the C.C.G and developed a notorious reputation among ghouls, and was one of the C.C.G's most pressing priorities.
The organization had its roots in the 24th Ward and was founded by Eto after she and her small band of ghouls were defeated by the C.C.G 13 years prior. Because of that, Aogiri had structural similarities with the first organization, as stated by several C.C.G investigators. Aogiri was stated to be commanded by the mysterious One-Eyed King, a figure surrounded by rumor and unseen by all but its direct subordinates. Many believed the One-Eyed Owl was the King, but Eto stated that was not the case. Despite being the organization's founder, Eto often acted behind the scenes and was shrouded in mystery to most, even amongst some of her own members. Tatara, a direct subordinate of the King, served as the operational leader of the organization, meeting with members and giving out orders to subordinates. Noro was another direct subordinate of the King but was usually only deployed into combat to quickly dispatch multiple enemies.
Eto once explained the origin of the group as she led a small band of ghouls in a raid against the C.C.G. In the end, most were killed and her arms were taken by a muscular youth with thick eyebrows. She then brings up the previous year, when a similar thing happened. She claims that she was overconfident and, being taught a lesson, decided to form Aogiri. Today they have several thousand members but their goal remains the same. According to her, Aogiri Tree exists to create a good world for ghouls. Her true aim is to eradicate the warped root behind C.C.G and requests the assembly participants to become foundation of the destruction of the birdcage.
Beneath Tatara were several executives, powerful ghouls who served as captains for the organization and led their own forces. They were responsible for much of the daily managing of the organization, such as gathering food and overseeing missions. Each executive had their own direct subordinates, some of which formed into distinct gangs of their own, such as the White Suits. Lower ranked members dressed in matching robes and masks, and carried out minor tasks, such as information gathering, scouting, and guard duty, or even kitchen duty.
Aogiri actively seeked out new members with each new territory they controlled.

The Washuu clan (和修家, Washū-ke) are a ghoul clan that originated from the Middle East. They have frequently practiced cannibalism throughout their long history, giving them powerful RC cells even from birth. They were involved in the formation of the CCG and are the central family leading it. Its members have hunted ghouls for well over a century, exterminating them using specialized methods. In 1890, the Japanese government enlisted the family in the founding of the Counter Ghoul Institution (喰種対策院, Gūru Taisaku in), a federal government agency that would manage and pursue ghouls.]Since then, its members have acted as prominent officials within the law enforcement agency.
It is noted that Washuu members are known for being serious investigators who are concerned about results and are hard to get along with, as they are willing to sacrifice many people to complete their missions, perceiving fellow investigators only as numbers. The only known exception is Yoshitoki Washuu, who is notable for having been hospitable and benevolent to his subordinates.
Eto Yoshimura later claimed the Washuu clan has a long-standing alliance with the ghoul organization V. She further alleges that the clan was involved in a conflict with a powerful one-eyed ghoul and this conflict resulted in the formation of the CCG.[2]
Ironically, the Washuu clan is actually comprised of ghouls posing as humans. Using their authority, they have kept their true nature secret since the formation of the anti-ghoul law enforcement agency they administrate. Itsuki Marude discovered their secret through a personal investigation of the family's members. He explains that he found absolutely nothing suspicious except for one minor detail: when he examined the records for the Rc Scan Gates, he noted they registered a false positive whenever a Washuu walked through them.
It is later revealed by Kaiko that the Washuu Clan used V as corpse collectors, and the Washuu ate the corpses of dead investigators in order to replenish their need for human meat.
Having practiced cannibalism for centuries, the Washuu Clan are considered to be "natural-born Kakujas." While other ghouls may develop a mutation in their Rc cells as a result of cannibalism, the Washuu bloodline carries a genetic mutation that causes these cells to naturally develop. Dr. Akihiro Kanou chose to focus on members of the Washuu bloodline in his experiments in order to take advantage of this enormously powerful bloodline.
The Washuu clan includes numerous branch families, tasked with carrying out different duties. At the head of these groups is the main family line, responsible for leading the CCG and being the public face of the larger clan. In secret, they also assign individuals to specific roles within a breeding program meant to preserve the pure-blooded lineage or to produce half-human agents to serve them. These individuals are known as "Seeds" and "Wombs," responsible for siring or bearing offspring to further the clan's agendas. According to Souta Washuu-Furuta, these breeding programs involve incestuous and non-consensual relations between the primary Washuu bloodline and "Wombs."

Name: Yoshimura (given name: Kuzen)
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Rate: SSS
Appearance: Yoshimura has swept back white hair and his eyes are usually closed. A tall, powerful man who is commonly in a formal waiter uniform. When traveling he dons a black cloak and hat. He frequently smiles with his head held high and arms behind the back. With a tranquilizing composure and a discreet nature, Yoshimura is both an enigma and a gentleman. While he was younger, he had black hair.
Yoshimura's ghoul mask covers half of his face with a hooked beak that resembles an owl. In his kakuja form, Yoshimura's kagune creates a mask that resembles the One-Eyed Owl's mask, with minor differences in the mouth lines' length and eye holes' curve.
Background: Formerly a ruthless ghoul assassin known as the "One-Eyed Owl," he later sought a peaceful life. He fell in love with a human woman, Ukina, and had a child with her (Eto). After Ukina's death, he founded the Anteiku coffee shop, aiming to create a haven for ghouls who wished to live peacefully among humans.
Character: Calm, wise, and compassionate. Yoshimura acts as a father figure and mentor to the ghouls at Anteiku. He is a firm believer in the possibility of coexistence between ghouls and humans, and he dedicates his life to helping ghouls, especially those in need, find a place in the world.
Ability: Yoshimura is a ghoul, possessing an ukaku kagune and a kakuja obtained from continuous cannibalization. His unique trait is shooting ukaku shards through his entire body.
Superhuman Speed: Yoshimura possesses immense skill as Kuzen and maintains some of that speed as he grows older. As Kuzen he was able to dodge multiple Special-Class Investigators and was able to attack them simultaneously. His speed matches that of the CCG's Reaper. His immense speed would allow him to dodge the all swift attacks without being fazed at all, which includes Narukami and T-Human's bolts.
Superhuman Regeneration: After several feats and clashes with the CCG, Kuzen developed a severe level of regeneration after fighting mobs and levels of investigators. This allows him to regenerate at a pace higher than any, regenerating any damage done to him in less than half a second. He was shown to have the greatest regeneration among all pure ghouls.
Superhuman Durability: Kuzen was able to take many hits from the CCG before developing his regeneration. He was able to take waves of hits from S and higher ranked quinques before taking even a subtle injury.
Pain Tolerance: Yoshimura was able to take multiple hits and enduring them while being unfazed by any of them, possessing an extremely high pain tolerance that is even extraordinary for Ghouls.
Kakuja
Ukaku Kakuja: Having cannibalized many ghouls as a cleaner for V, Yoshimura has developed an extremely powerful all-round kakuja that features six to eight kakuho. In his kakuja form, he can cover long to short range attacks, making for an incredibly difficult and formidable opponent to face. That coupled with his kakuja's insurmountable firepower makes Yoshimura worthy of his SSS rating. The most prominent feature of his kakuja is the two large scimitar-like blades mounted on both shoulders and the plethora of kagune surrounding his upper back. Yoshimura's kakuja kagune also forms a mask similar to the One-Eyed Owl's, with minor differences in the eye hole size and line curves. His kakuja form is potent enough to endure and counter multiple Special Class investigators' attacks and enhances his physical capabilities to where a lot effort from the aforementioned required in order to subdue him, as Yoshimura is also skilled enough to fight an army of investigators simultaneously without much trouble.
RC Cell Projection - Presumably an extension of his ukaku kagune, Yoshimura can unleash an endless long-range barrage of sharp and large spikes capable of pushing back Yukinori Shinohara and Iwao Kuroiwa while they were wearing Arata. The spikes unleashed can also easily decapitate and slice through the armor of CCG operatives. Unique to Yoshimura, he has shown the ability to shoot Rc projectiles out of his entire body, not just his kagune.
Black Pellet Projection - Yoshimura also possesses a kagune near his shoulders capable of producing a "black smoke" that releases mid-range black shotgun-like pellets that have incredible destructive capacity, blowing holes in cement and the bodies of CCG operatives alike.
Shoulder-Mounted Blades - Unlike most ukaku ghouls that are vulnerable at close range, Yoshimura's kakuja form prominently features two extremely large should-mounted scimitar-like blades which he can extend and contort at will.
Other Details: Known as "The Owl" by the CCG and "The Non-Killing Owl" by ghouls. He is the manager of the Anteiku coffee shop and the biological father of Eto.

Name: Touka Kirishima
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Female
Age: 17 at the beginning of the series, progressing to her early 20s.
Height: 156 cm
Rate: S
Appearance: Touka is a slender teenage girl with bob-length dark blue hair that has long bangs that reach her chin covering the right side of her face and blue eyes. She appears to be a cute, normal girl that one would not suspect to be a ghoul. Her facial features and hairstyle bear a strong resemblance to Hikari Kirishima (Touka's mother) and Ayato Kirishima (Touka's younger brother). She wears her waitress or high school uniform for work and school respectively, whereas her casual clothes are tomboyish streetwear.
Her waitress uniform is a white shirt rolled up to her elbows, a black vest, a red tie, and a black skirt down to her lower thighs. On top of that skirt, she also wears a brown skirt that reaches her upper thighs. She also wears tight red leggings.
As "Rabbit", she wears a long coat jacket, rabbit mask, and a blonde, or sometimes a pink, wig to conceal her identity. After the Aogiri arc, her hair reaches her shoulders, but her signature bangs remain the same. As a child, she wore dresses and bunny hair-clip on the left side of her bangs, and her hairstyle was much the same. However, her bangs at first were brushed to the side revealing her whole face.
Background: Grew up in the 20th ward with her younger brother, Ayato. After their father was taken by the CCG, she lived as an orphan until she was taken in by Yoshimura at Anteiku. She juggles her life as a high school student and a part-time waitress with her identity as a ghoul.
Character: Touka's personality is initially defined by her duality between rage and kindness, with her character arc centred around that rage fading as well as her kindness coming to the fore. She is inherently kind, but this was repressed due to her losing her father and thus having to survive in the ghoul world from an early age, which required her to be ruthless. As Shuu Tsukiyama notes, she had previously looked more dangerous and cold but has somewhat softened up because of her human life, and continued to do so due to Ken Kaneki's influence, who allowed her to be the kind person she is deep down.
She is also rash and reckless mainly due to her abandonment issues, causing her to lose control of her emotions when losing someone close to her, and her insecurities over her ghoulhood, given the dangers associated over simply existing as a ghoul, as well as the necessity to eat humans to survive. She longs to be human and desires to integrate into their society, as shown by her strong connection with the human world. This comes from her father, who taught her to reject her ghoulhood and to live with humans in order to survive, as well as a desire to simply live happily and in peace with her loved ones. She hates her ghoulhood and has low esteem as a result, as shown by her reaction when called beautiful by Kimi Nishino, despite seeing her as a ghoul with a kagune. However these insecurities also cause her to lash out at the world when there's injustice done towards ghouls, particularly when it's done to ghouls close to her.
This low self esteem is further diminished due to her abandonment issues, saying herself she felt "useless" for being unable to stop her father from getting killed, which she viewed as him prioritizing revenge for her mother over taking care of her and Ayato Kirishima. These issues become worse when Ayato and then Kaneki abandon her, creating and reinforcing a mentality that she's not good enough for the people she loves to stay with her. This low self esteem as well as her abandonment issues results her willing to recklessly throw her life away multiple times before the timeskip, such as during the Anteiku Raid, when she cannot bear the pain of losing someone close to her.
Due to her fathers teachings she attempts to conform to the world, having been compared to a bird trapped in a cage within the story itself, but she also cannot accept injustice done towards ghouls due to her insecurities, nor can she bear the pain of losing someone close to her due to her abandonment issues, and lashes out when she cannot suppress this anger, such as during the Doves Emergence arc. She is full of hatred for ghoul investigators, stemming from the fact that her family was torn apart by the CCG and she had to live life as a fugitive. This hatred and rage subsides over time, especially after she kills Kureo Mado out of revenge, realizing he was married afterwards. This lead to her realizing she was only contributing to the cycle of hate and revenge, having likely inflicted the same trauma on someone as the ghoul investigators did on her.
Ability: Touka is an ukaku ghoul possessing one wing with the ability to harden and dis-harden it at will.
Ukaku Kagune: During the time of Touka's fight with Shuu Tsukiyama, she formed a single ukaku wing and control her kagune with ease. As time passed, Touka gained a second wing with projectiles of a much larger size. Additionally, her kagune stopped the projectiles of Kiyoko's Zebizu and Mougan's Higher Mind, upon emerging, even canceling the attack for a brief moment of time.
Pseudo-Electrokinesis: Touka's kagune while in use is surrounded by a lightning-like aura, capable of generating electricity that can be utilized in an offensive and destructive manner.
Superhuman Speed: When engaging Tsukiyama in battle, she traveled at a speed fast enough to make Tsukiyama lose track of her location for a short amount of time.
Superhuman Endurance: When fighting Ayato Kirishima during the 11th Ward Battle, Touka maintained consciousness after getting her kagune devoured by her brother.
Other Details: Becomes the manager of the coffee shop, :re. She is Kaneki's primary love interest and later his wife, with whom she has a child.

Height: 182 cm
Rate: Estimated at SS~rate
Appearance: Yomo is a tall, well-built man with silver hair, and stubble. He has an immovable stone-like glare. He is normally in a long trenchcoat common with ghouls and wears a black shirt he has kept since his days in the 4th ward. His ghoul mask resembles a raven.
Background: Formerly a rebellious ghoul in the 4th ward, he was a rival of Uta and Itori. He was eventually taken in by Yoshimura and became a loyal member of the Anteiku group, helping to collect food for ghouls who couldn't hunt for themselves.
Character: Quiet and reserved, Yomo was originally a hot-blooded ghoul who would retaliate violently, especially against Uta back in their juvenile days in the 4th ward. Before working at Anteiku, Yomo was a very vengeful person. He harbored immense hatred towards Kishou Arima for killing his sister, Hikari. This hate caused him to lose his composure when he was up against Arima and attack in a blind fury. Since his meeting with Yoshimura, he gradually became more composed and loyal to the manager while he worked on the behind-the-scenes jobs unquestionably. Although he displays a cold demeanor, Yomo does care about his friends and coworkers. When caring for Hetare, he is overprotective and curiously invested, even trying to teach it new words and calling him "Shooting Star Wing" based on his appearance.
Ability: Yomo is one of the more powerful ghouls in the series.
Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability
Kagune
Ukaku Kagune: Befitting his moniker, Yomo's kagune takes the form of two black wings (two large black talons in the anime) sprouting from his upper back. Like most Ukaku, Yomo can launch a barrage of Rc cells in the form of bullet-like shards that can shred his targets to pieces.
Pseudo-Electrokinesis: Yomo's kagune possesses a unique ability to form electricity from his RC cells that can be fired off like a cannon, used to electrocute multiple targets at once, or form a shield of electricity that acts as a barrier to defend him from attacks. Yomo can also use a lightning rod in conjunction with his kagune to unleash a devastating lightning strike that destroyed Uta's kakuja.
Other Details: He is Touka's uncle and one of the most trusted members of Anteiku. He works closely with Yoshimura and is deeply respected by other ghouls.

Appearance: Koma typically wears Anteiku's waiter uniform and is the only waiter that wears a bow tie. He has brown hair styled in a pompadour and a bulbous nose. As the Devil Ape, he wears a long white hooded coat with a pair of matching white pants. His ghoul mask is a snarling monkey face with marking on each of the eyes.
Background: Formerly the leader of a violent gang called the "Devil Apes." He was defeated by Yoshimura, the manager of Anteiku, and was persuaded to give up his gang life for a more peaceful existence as a waiter.
Character: Koma is a polite, playful and proud waiter of Anteiku who acts as Ken Kaneki's supervisor when Yoshimura is not around. He takes pride in his work as a worker of Anteiku and his former glory days as the "Devil Ape" of the 20th ward. Unlike Kaya Irimi, he is more talkative with his coworkers and has a long association with Yoshimura before his employment at Anteiku. The side stories reveal a more forbearing aspect in lone conversations with his friends such as when he discusses the dualism of leader-subordinate relationship and its consequences for people. In the past, Koma had a more violent and brutal temperament.
Ability: As a former ghoul in the 20th ward with a large gang that held a lot of territory, Koma is a formidable fighter. Despite his attitude and looks, he is extremely capable, being able to fight on par with a Special Class Investigator for an extended amount of time. He is very proficient in hand-to-hand combat and is agile enough to handle First Class Investigators for a period of time without injury. He claims that he is stronger than Kaya Irimi, who is labelled as a SS-rated ghoul.
Ghoul Physiology: Living as a full ghoul, Koma possesses a bikaku kagune along with increased physical capabilities.
Bikaku Kagune: His kagune takes the form of a monkey tail. His uses for it are mainly prehensile, using it for agile movement on surfaces such as walls and using it to dodge attacks rather than using it as an actual weapon in combat.
Other Details: Known by his alias "Devil Ape." He is a very devoted member of Anteiku and a key figure in the ghoul community of the 20th Ward.

Name: Kaya Irimi
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Female
Age: Unknown, an adult

Appearance: Irimi is a woman with long, dark hair that has long, parted locks in the front. Irimi dresses fairly casually. At first glance, she seems to be a rather solemn and taciturn woman. After the timeskip, she has her hair shorter due to cutting it.
In the past, Irimi's hair was considerably shorter.
Her ghoul mask resembles a Doberman's face. Background: She was the leader of the ghoul gang "Black Dogs," a rival gang to the Devil Apes. Like Koma, she was convinced by Yoshimura to join Anteiku and live peacefully.
Character: Irimi is a quiet and reserved young woman who normally keeps to herself. In subtle moments, she can be quite annoyed and speak out her honest thoughts however. She has also been shown to be especially kind towards Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi. Like Enji Koma, Irimi has been with Yoshimura long before they were employees at Anteiku and is quite loyal to the manager. When she was about to die, she was willing to accept and embrace her death, described by Renji Yomo, it was punishment for her past sins.
In the past, Irimi was a very murderous ghoul who possessed a more savage and cruel disposition, with some of her actions including the brutal killing of the entire squad of Ghoul Investigators sent to kill Irimi and her gang, the Black Dobers. She then proceeded to sadistically leave a single survivor after brutally scarring him.
Ability: Irimi possesses an ukaku kagune, as well as higher physical capabilities along with heightened senses apart from her ukaku kagune. During battle, Irimi uses a dog like fighting style where she primarily uses her extremely sharp nails to inflict several deep cuts on her opponents and uses her extreme agility in tandem with her four limbs to make nimble dodges and attacks.
Ukaku Kagune: Her kagune takes the form of two beetle-like wings with a tail between them.
Superhuman Senses: She has excellent hearing abilities, able to differentiate the volume, type, deflection and rhythm of sound waves to comprehend details of enemies and the surroundings. Using this method, she can pinpoint ghouls and their location through vibrations emanating from their kagune. Irimi can also take advantage of this ability to predict the movements and attacks of enemies during a fight before they are executed to dodge and use in her favor.
Superhuman Agility: Irimi can swiftly dodge a barrage of attacks from multiple enemies at once within milliseconds, allowing her to fight several high ranked ghoul investigators easily.
Other Details: Known by her alias "Black Dog." She is a very close friend and companion to Enji Koma. Her calm demeanor provides a sense of stability to the Anteiku group.

Name: Nishiki Nishio
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: 19 at the start of the series; 22 in Tokyo Ghoul:re
Height: 177 cm (5'9.5")
Appearance: Nishiki is a slim young man whose distinctive traits are his glasses and messy hazelnut hair. Like other disguised ghouls, Nishiki dresses in normal casual clothes to blend in. He also wears two bangles that Kimi Nishino brought for them to match together. After the Aogiri Arc and into the Owl Suppression Operation. Nishiki cut his hair into a bowl-cut hairstyle similar to the one he had during his first year at Kamii University.
After the time skip, Nishiki appears as a ghoul named "Serpent", donning a snake-like mask and wearing a hooded cloak. With his mask off, he appears to have gained a scar over his left eye during the time skip and his hair has grown back. His expression has become much more melancholic after the time skip.
Background: A ghoul who studies at the same university as Kaneki. He initially acts as an antagonist but later becomes a close ally and friend. He is in a committed relationship with his human girlfriend, Kimi Nishino.
Character: Nishiki is a diligent yet arrogant student and prodigy. He has an insensitive attitude with a knack for abrasive language. He also demands that people younger than him show respect for their elders. Touka Kirishima once insulted Nishiki and called him "sex-obsessed," in reference to his relationship with Kimi Nishino. Above his sharp tongue, he is a cautious individual who isn't keen on trusting others. Despite this, Nishiki can be shown to be loyal. He is willing to sacrifice himself for Kimi.
As a child, Nishiki had the same attitude as Kaneki. He questioned eating humans and questioned his sister's mindset. Nishiki deeply loved his sister and had a very close relationship with her.
After his sister was betrayed by her boss and killed by members of the CCG, Nishiki became unable to trust people, especially humans but also ghouls, and hardly socializes with others. He acts like a lone wolf and attacks ghouls that seem to trespass in his feeding ground. He originally approaches his girlfriend Kimi to use her for his own ends.
After fighting Kaneki, Nishiki is weakened to the point where he resorts to eating Kimi in order to recover. However, after she accepts him as a ghoul, he cherishes Kimi more than anything else and has regained some trust in others. He joins Anteiku so that he is provided with food and doesn't have to kill humans to eat.
After the time skip, Nishiki is primarily noted as a ghoul hunting other ghouls, showing little regard for the lives of both humans and ghouls alike. He is ruthless in dispatching those he considers troublesome or useless, killing those unfortunate enough to encounter him. When he encounters the Quinx Squad, his personality is further revealed to be surprisingly casual and laid-back, with a sarcastic edge. He makes mocking observations of his opponents, calling them names and littering his speech with foul language. Overall, he comes across as arrogant due to his great ability and doesn't seem to take others very seriously. However, despite this arrogant attitude, he appears to be quite saddened seeing Kaneki in his current identity as Haise Sasaki.
Ability: Nishiki is a bikaku ghoul, which grants him increased regeneration and durability, as well as agility and strength apart from his bikaku kagune.
Bikaku Kagune: While adept at combat, Nishiki uses his wits rather than brawn when in battle. His kagune pushes his foot to increase the power of his kicks even further. However, his kagune seems to only enhance his leg strength and isn't viable for any other task. As a typical bikaku user, Nishiki makes certain care that his trump card kagune isn't exposed. After the timeskip, Nishiki has completely mastered his kagune's abilities. It can vary in length and size, ending in a double-pronged tip. Rather than wrapping his kagune on his leg to strengthen his kicks, Nishiki now uses the kagune as a weapon by itself.
Superhuman Durability: Nishiki has remarkable endurance, even for a ghoul. He was capable of surviving a large hole torn into his stomach by Kaneki’s kagune and make it home. After only consuming a bite of flesh from Kimi’s shoulder Nishiki was capable of moving around and traveling to Anteiku alone to ask for Kaneki’s help and later traveling to a church to save Kimi. Nishiki managed to endure multiple attacks from Tsukiyama’s kagune and maintain consciousness and later take a blow from Touka’s kagune a short time later.
Superhuman Strength: In :re, his strength vastly improved as he was able to break Urie's kagune with a single kick without much effort.
Superhuman Agility: Nishiki was agile enough to shrug off multiple attacks from members of Quinx.
Other Details: His relationship with his human girlfriend, Kimi, highlights the theme of coexistence between humans and ghouls.

Name: Eto Yoshimura
Species: One-Eyed Ghoul (artificial ghoul)
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Height: 151 cm (human form)
Rate: S(eto), SSS(owl)
Appearance: Eto is a petite woman in her mid-twenties with a typically sleepy or curious expression. Her long green hair is usually messy or on top of her head in a bun, complementing her modest or sloppy fashion. Though she is typically unkempt, she is noted to be an incredible beauty with many admirers and greatly resembles her mother, Ukina, this resemblance deepens when she later cuts her hair into a short bob.
While active in Aogiri, she wraps her entire body in bandages, doubling as a concealment to keep her identity secretive. Over it she wears a maroon hooded cloak with droopy ears and a floral scarf around her neck. Her right eye is a kakugan, while the other eye is a tone of light green.
Background: The secret leader of the Aogiri Tree ghoul organization and a famous human author under the pseudonym Sen Takatsuki. She is the daughter of Yoshimura and a human woman named Ukina, making her the first naturally born one-eyed ghoul. She was abandoned by her father and raised in the 24th ward by Tatara and Noro.
Character: Eto has a sadistic personality, often expressing joy at the expense of others' suffering. She has no qualms about remorselessly slaughtering humans and ghouls alike, and shows happiness when inflicting pain on others. Like her mother, Eto has a very sharp intuition about the feelings and desires of people, which she exploits to the fullest when dealing with her victims and manipulating others to do her bidding. Her twisted personality is possibly the result of fighting to stay alive during her early years in the 24th ward.
Like many ghouls, she is able to compartmentalize her ghoul and human alter egos with relative ease. As Sen Takatsuki, she is quite playful and scatterbrained at times, oversleeping on the day she was supposed to be signing books and taking photos with admirers when it was prohibited by her manager.
According to the profile Haise Sasaki constructs through his analysis of her works, the author is a woman filled with despair and hatred towards the world, having completely abandoned hope long ago. While mostly true, she strongly believes in creating a society where ghouls will not be persecuted for existing and will do anything to fulfill this ambition, regardless of what she has to sacrifice.
Ability: As a half-ghoul, Eto gained an enhanced prowess due to hybrid vigor and inherited the abilities of her ghoul father.
Ukaku Kagune: Eto's skill with her kagune is far more advanced than most ghouls. After the timeskip, her kagune takes the form of multiple grotesque appendages attached to her back. These appendages can be shaped into eyes, mouths, arms, and legs in order to suit Eto's purposes. Her kagune appears to be an extension of her consciousness as the mouths often speak incoherent sentences, possibly her thoughts at the moment.
Ukaku Kakuja: While her ukaku kagune covers middle to far distances, her kakuja cuts down those in front. Her ukaku kagune fires projectiles large enough to overwhelm most seasoned CCG investigators, including Yukinori Shinohara and Iwao Kuroiwa while both were equipped with Arata Proto. Unlike most kakuja, she is able to maintain her consciousness. Much like her kagune, she is able to change the physical form of her kakuja, spawning extra appendages like limbs, mouths and eyes at will. It also has the potency of obliterating a huge disposal machinery at Cochlea.
Kagune Detachment: Eto demonstrates the ability to detach pieces of her kagune, using them to manipulate and restrain targets. She may be able to "implant" her kagune into others and significantly alter their physiology by transmitting Rc patterns to them, as she did with Kanae (and possibly Noro).
Superhuman Durability: Eto was completely unfazed from getting severed below her abdomen by Kaneki, and could endure being defeated and smashed into a wall by Furuta.
Superhuman Regeneration: After her clash with Kaneki, Eto regenerated her entire lower half during the timeskip. Eto also exhibited inhumane healing prowess after regenerating her decapitated head when her "corpse" was released from Donato's control.
Superhuman Speed: Eto has reached a high level of speed on numerous occasions. Notably, she moved so swiftly that Kurona and Nashiro were unable to visually track her movements. Shortly afterwards, she demonstrated speed sufficient to remove several of Banjou's ribs without him noticing the injuries.
Other Details: Also known as the "One-Eyed Owl," she is the founder of the Aogiri Tree. Eto is ambidextrous, but she writes with her left hand.

Name: Tatara
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: unknown
Height: 186 cm
Rate: SS~
Appearance: Tatara was a tall man with short white hair and red eyes. He hid his mouth with a red iron mask, and was seen wearing a white cloak most of the time. When he was first seen with Eto, he was wearing a large blue cloak.
Background: A high-ranking member of the Aogiri Tree and a direct subordinate of Eto. He is one of the three main founders of the organization, along with Eto and Noro. He harbors a deep-seated hatred for the CCG and Investigator Kousuke Houji, who killed his brother.
Character: As one of the Aogiri Tree leaders and a trusted subordinate working under the One-Eyed Owl, Tatara came off as a rather loyal individual. He was portrayed as composed and stoic mostly, and carried himself with an effortless proud, commanding gait. He often monitored the activities of the Aogiri executives who killed in cold blood when embarking on a mission. He was also proud of his immense stamina when fighting and the accuracy of his calculations as well. Tatara seemed to have a taste for precision; as shown when he turned down Kaneki considering he was an artificial one-eyed ghoul. He held a grudge against Kousuke Houji, as he was one of those who killed the members of Chi She Lian, including his brother.
He has also been noted by Ayato Kirishima to consider his underlings to be mere peons, something he willingly confirmed.
Ability: As a ghoul, Tatara has considerable superhuman strength, along with a kagune, like most ghouls.
Superhuman Speed: Tatara closed in on Seidou Takizawa before the latter could react.
Superhuman Durability: √A also suggested that Tatara had strong resilience and regeneration as he was able to take a hit from Special Class Kyouji Misaka's quinque without any visible wounds in the time it took him to break out of its grip. He also endured Houji's Hollow without sustaining major wounds.
Kagune
Bikaku Kagune: His kagune was capable of easily slaughtering an entire squad of CCG investigators before approaching Seidou. In Tokyo Ghoul √A, his kagune was seen for a brief moment before his confrontation with Seidou. His kagune in the anime looked like a large, thick, blood red tail, and in the manga, his kagune resembled a long, thin and skeletal tail and the tip of it resembled a spearhead.
Kakuja
Bikaku Kakuja: Having consumed countless ghouls, Tatara had developed a kakuja. It appeared as a large, muscular, and metallic armor with two large, elongated hammers that resemble flamethrowers connected to his shoulders and back along with and a wispy looking tail. His kakuja head was triangular and had a gap in the front of his head that could produce flames. Tatara's kakuja resembled a salamander.
Pseudo-Pyrokinesis: Most uniquely, the emissions from his kakuja's highly concentrated Rc cells ignite, producing flames exceeding 4,000 degrees Celsius, being called a "tongue of flame" by Akira Mado. The flames were produced around his head and were constant. Tatara could change the quantities of fire produced, simply from a small stream in front of his face or a large wave of fire that could engulf multiple enemies in one quick attack.
Other Details: He is one of the main leaders of Aogiri Tree. His brother was killed by Kousuke Houji, fueling his hatred for the CCG.

Name: Noro
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown, appears to be ageless.
Height: 200 cm
Appearance: Noro was an eerie giant of a ghoul with long black hair tied up in a ponytail. Noro wore a white mask featuring huge black lips, a huge mouth with equally massive teeth and tiny slits for nostrils. His fingernails were black, much like those of a pre-timeskip Kaneki. After the time skip, Noro's hair had grown as they were seen with a much thicker ponytail. Under his mask, Noro's decapitated head had no eyes or a nose and seemed to have been mummified. The reason for this has yet to be known.
As Noroi, he was a powerfully built man with a serene expression. He wore a hooded robe similar to what he later wore as a member of Aogiri.
Background: One of the three founding members of Aogiri Tree and a loyal subordinate of Eto. He was entrusted with Eto's care by Yoshimura after Ukina's death. Noro’s true identity is not revealed until later in the series, but his relationship with Yoshimura is a key part of his backstory.
Character: An intimidating giant in eerie silence, Noro seemed to communicate only through actions, not words. He carried around a clock when being fought by Tsukiyama, Yomo, and Uta. Tsukiyama speculated that he was under a curfew, much like a child. Noro never displayed any signs of pain or resistance when attacked and seriously injured and merely healed his wounds without problems. Despite that, Noro showed the ability to speak in his last moments, and displayed a level of intelligence.
The CCG had noted Noro's actions as unpredictable, he either ignored them or was ferociously aggressive. Such behavior was demonstrated in the 11th Ward Battle where he decimated the squad that discovered the wounded Ayato Kirishima but ignored Juuzou Suzuya when he found Yamori's body and later assaulted the Itou and Quinx Squads during the Rosewald Investigation.
Ability: Being a ghoul, Noro possessed a ukaku kagune, kakuja, and very high levels of regeneration that were given to him by Eto. However, Noro possessed a physiology unlike any other ghoul. He was able to form kagune-like structures from his body even after being severed in half, and from the perspective of an average ghoul, he ate an absurd amount of meat. Out of all ghouls acknowledged by the CCG, Noro was considered to be one of the strongest ghouls, excluding the One-Eyed Owl and Shachi.
Ukaku Kagune: Noro had a very thick, lamprey-like kagune with a functional mouth. With it, Noro destroyed the CCG's computer system and assassinated the CCG's forces with minimal effort. During the Rose investigation, Noro easily annihilated the Quinx and Kuramoto Squads, killing many members during the assault. It is heavily implied this kagune is not actually his, but Eto's.
Ukaku Kakuja: Noro's kakuja was unique, instead of forming armor, it transformed into a huge mass of kagune covered by large mouths, similar to his regular kagune. Noro was unable to move as this lump of kagune raged uncontrollably but enabled him to withstand a high quantity of firepower. It is heavily implied this kakujae is not actually his, but Eto's.
Superhuman Regeneration: Noro displayed freakish levels of regeneration even among ghouls. He could reattach severed body parts almost immediately, even when it was his torso cut in half. In his encounter with Uta, Yomo, and Tsukiyama, he survived getting pierced by Uta, having his head kicked off by Yomo, and being stabbed multiple times by Tsukiyama. While fighting the Quinx and Itou Squads, he reattached his lower half effortlessly.
Pain Tolerance: Noro was unfazed by the many severe, life-threatening wounds inflicted upon him.
Other Details: His incredible regenerative abilities are so unusual that they are suspected to be a result of human experimentation or some unknown genetic modification. He serves as Eto's guardian and bodyguard.

Name: Ayato Kirishima
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: 14 at the start of the series, 17 in Tokyo Ghoul:re
Height: 159 cm (5'2.5") initially; 170 cm later tokyo Ghoul: re
Appearance: Ayato was a lean young man, with blue eyes and long, blue messy hair which swept down in front of his eyes. He bore a striking resemblance to his sister and had a rough-looking, rebellious image. He wore a hooded, long-sleeved black leather jacket, and black pants, along with knee-high black boots. Ayato also had a piercing on his left ear, and usually wore a ring on the pinky finger of his right hand.
In the anime, Ayato was mostly seen wearing a black mask with spires, as well as a black overcoat with a white fur collar.
After the timeskip, Ayato had grown noticeably taller, and was seen wearing shin-high black boots and a long, black coat over his clothes.
Ayato possessed multiple black masks. The first one had red eyes and a sharp-toothed grin, which he used during the Aogiri Arc. His most frequently-seen mask bore a rabbit design, earning him the moniker of "Black Rabbit." During the auction, he wore a very basic, vaguely conical mask which covered only the lower half of his face. Background: The younger brother of Touka Kirishima. After their father's disappearance, Ayato joined the ghoul organization Aogiri Tree, believing ghouls must fight for their own survival.
Character: Ayato was an arrogant, brash teenager, with a similar hot-blooded attitude resembling his sister's, while he normally displayed either a scowl or menacing smirk on his face. Other than his physicalities, he shared many similarities with Touka, such as his tendency to use language that is often uncouth or inappropriate. He had a habit for kicking people over the simplest mistakes; such as when Kaneki failed to address him with the desired honorific, or when Banjou did not return his missed calls. However, he seemed to be more harsh compared to his sister, but admitted himself to be surprisingly "softer" than his Aogiri superiors. He was a firm believer in the notion that "the weak perish and the strong survive," which was triggered by the death of his mother and father. Ayato bore deep grudges against his father, Arata, for abandoning him and Touka when they were young. Ayato had even stated that the whole reason for hating Kaneki was his resemblance to Arata. It was also pointed out by Kaneki that Ayato cared deeply for Touka subconsciously, as shown when he beat her down first rather than allowing her to suffer a slow, torturous death from Yamori. Later on, he also took her alias, "Rabbit" so the CCG would hunt him instead of Touka. Ayato also seemed to have a soft spot for rabbits.
Three years later, there was a reduction in most of the mannerisms and habits which Ayato once portrayed when he was younger; as he became far less ill-tempered, obnoxious and arrogant, and even developed a rational, approachable way of speaking. Ayato also grew on having a sense of concern, as well as the instinct to protect his subordinates, shown when he refused to leave Hinami behind in the auction and by not following Tatara's orders and going to back up Naki when he was outnumbered by the Doves. However, he still retained a few of his old traits, such as relentlessly slaughtering ghoul investigators and engaging in violent brawls. He tends to hide his softer side, by denying he wanted to visit his niece.
Ability: Having been born as a full ghoul, Ayato possessed an ukaku kagune with the ability to harden for close range combat.
Ukaku Kagune: Like his sister, Ayato's kagune were vermilion in color. He was able to form a single wing on both of his shoulders. Like many ukaku ghouls, he was agile and able to shoot bullets from both wings when in the crystallized mode. However he also suffered from a low Rc supply and therefore tired if a battle was dragged out for too long and was ill suited for close range, however, he has managed to evade both weaknesses of an ukaku through utilizing his kagune in a koukaku-like manner, making close range his specialty rather than his weakness. He was able to hide within his kagune mid-air, with the two wings revolving around him to shield him from projectiles such as bullets. In :re, his kagune appeared to be much larger in size, as he also possesed the ability to generate one wing of his kagune, and has better control over it. His crystallized kagune wings could transform into sharp blades sprouting from his shoulders.
Superhuman Durability: Ayato survived being smashed through several floors of a building by Kaneki, as well as having half of his bones broken by the latter.
Superhuman Regeneration: After a period of time, Ayato was able to recuperate from critical wounds inflicted onto him by Kaneki.
Superhuman Senses: Although inferior to the sensing abilities of Hinami Fueguchi, Ayato was capable of discerning an environment through hearing such as assuming how many people are inside a room.
Other Details: Known by the alias "Black Rabbit." His complicated relationship with his sister Touka is a central part of his character development.

Name: Dr. Akihiro Kanou
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be in his 50s or 60s
Height: 176 cm (5'9")
Appearance: Kanou was an elderly, grey-haired man who wore the typical attire of a physician: white coat, white shirt, and black necktie. In :re, he also appears in a Hawaiian shirt and carries a fan. Kanou is often seen with two or three loose strands of hair falling over his forehead.
Background: A former renowned doctor from the CCG. He is the scientist responsible for the surgeries that created artificial one-eyed ghouls, including Ken Kaneki. He worked with the ghoul organization V to pursue his goal of creating a "new world."
Character: Kanou appeared as a benevolent physician whose purpose is to ensure the health of his patients. He disregarded regulations if it allowed him to save the life of his patient. However, behind this façade lies the mind of a disturbed mad scientist. Kanou considered ghouls, or more specifically one-eyed ghouls, as a way for humans to evolve in order to escape the "birdcage" that is encasing the "world." He was a misanthrope who perceived humans as weak and believed they possess no potential for the future. He stated that he had lost all hope in living in a world with humans. He showed no remorse for the test subjects of his ghoulification experiments, dismissing them as stepping stones for his ambitions. Kanou exploited the loneliness of naïve people, manipulating them for the progress of his clinical research.
Surprisingly despite Kanou's loathing of the human race, he admitted there are individuals among them whom he respected for their abilities. This is seen when he compliments Dr. Kouitsu Chigyou on his modification and refinement of the kakuhou transplant surgery to create the Quinx.
Ability: Kanou had proven himself to be a highly charismatic and intelligent man from being able to convince loyal CCG cadets, such as Kurona and Nashiro, into joining his cause and permitting him to perform ghoul experiments on them.
Medical Expertise: Despite his disregard for human life, Kanou was a surgeon whose medical skills and knowledge of the body are astonishing, allowing him to perform operations capable of converting a human into a one-eyed ghoul or Quinx. Proof of his knowledge is in his ghoulification research. He has created several successful artificial one-eyed subjects, such as Kaneki, Furuta, Kurona, Nashiro, Takizawa, and Amon. He also has much knowledge in ghoul anatomy and how to create Rc pathways, as shown when torturing Takizawa. Nico has mentioned his knowledge of humans equates to his extensive knowledge of ghoul biology. Other Details: The primary catalyst for many of the key events in the series. He is the mastermind behind the creation of both Kaneki and the Quinx Squad. He holds a twisted belief that his research will solve the conflict between ghouls and humans.

Name: Hinami Fueguchi
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Female
Age: 13 at the beginning, around 20 at the end of the series
Height: 148 cm (4'10") / ±162cm (tokyo ghoul re)
Rate: SS
Appearance: Hinami is a young teenager with light skin, bearing a resemblance to her late mother. She had short, straight brown hair, brown eyes, and often wore a hairband decorated with two four-leaf clovers, a common motif for her. Her outfit consisted of an orange scarf, a white cardigan with brown buttons, a black T-shirt underneath, a light blue mini skirt, yellow tights/pantyhose/stockings and brown boots.
She was identified as the "Daughter" ghoul when she was wearing her butterfly dress and coat. Therefore, she disguised herself while moving around the 20th ward.
After the time skip, Hinami has grown into a beautiful young woman, with her hair arranged into a bob cut with her fringe parted towards the right side of her face. She first appears in the opening montage wearing a long black hooded cloak on missions. For casual clothes she wore a long sleeve blue dress with black sleeves, black leggings and sandals. While in the epilogue, she wore a simple white shirt with a long purple skirt and the same sandals.
Background: The daughter of two ghouls, who was orphaned after her parents were killed by CCG investigators. She found refuge at Anteiku and considers Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima to be her surrogate older siblings.
Character: As a preteen, Hinami was shy with a very gentle heart. She was also eager for knowledge and fond of reading in order to learn. She cared deeply for Touka and Kaneki, constantly expressing sadness and worry for the two's unhappiness. She also had a very pacifistic nature, having no intention to avenge her mother and father despite loving them so much. Hinami gradually coped with the deaths of her parents better, and obtained a very cheerful attitude.
After the time skip, Hinami's demeanor has become much more calm, collected, and somewhat distant. Her experiences since Kaneki's disappearance and the CCG's new agenda has caused her to lose much of her previously cheery stance and instead take on a jaded, realistic outlook on life. Since joining Aogiri Tree, Hinami's persona has become more solidified. She is no longer terrified of smelling or seeing death, as shown through her interactions with Torso and Ayato. However, she is still reluctant to kill. She believes this to be her weakness and the reason people she loved left her.
Ability: Hinami was born with both a rinkaku and koukaku kagune, as well as heightened senses.
Koukaku Kagune: This kagune resembles two flowers petals that act as shields. After the time skip, Hinami could create four koukaku petals, which was strong enough to block one of Higher Mind's blasts.
Rinkaku Kagune: This kagune takes the shape of flexible red and yellow spines. As a child, Hinami could produce up to two rinkaku tentacles. As time passed, Hinami displayed the ability to create four rinkaku tentacles while having greater control over them.
Superhuman Senses: Having a great sense of hearing, Hinami can easily sort through sounds for information. Having an abnormal sense of smell, Hinami can use this information to find peoples’ locations from long distances.
Other Details: She is an orphan who found a new family at Anteiku. Her tragic backstory and powerful abilities make her a central and sympathetic figure in the series. She is also a talented artist.

Name: Yakumo Oomori (known as Yamori)
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown, an adult
Height: 186 cm (6'1")
Rate: S
Appearance: In Tokyo Ghoul: Jack, Yamori was slimmer than he was in the Tokyo Ghoul manga and had black hair. He wore a black suit with a white shirt in the manga but a black shirt in the OVA.
Yamori was a very bulky man with slicked back blonde hair and sharp lizard eyes and was every bit as scary as he looked. Normally in an entirely white suit and black dress shirt, he resembled a typical gangster. His face closely resembled a gecko. His mask is a reference to Jason Voorhees, a hockey mask that echoed his violent temperament.
Background: A former member of the ghoul organization Aogiri Tree. He was captured by the CCG and subjected to horrific torture, which drove him insane and turned him into a sadistic torturer himself. He is a notorious criminal from the 13th Ward.
Character: Not much was known before his imprisonment, but Yamori developed an arrogant and sadistic personality that mirrored his interrogator as a means of escaping the reality of his torture. He was a manipulative and deceitful ghoul who would be violent in order to get what he desires.
He inherited the finger cracking from his interrogator which he would, unintentionally, pass to Kaneki. Despite his brutish, cruel, sadistic and violent nature he was somewhat carefree. He also loved his mother dearly, enough so that in his last moments alive he constantly called out to her.
Ability: Yamori was an S-rated ghoul, a powerful threat with great physical strength and speed due to the cannibalization of other ghouls. In the 13th ward, there was almost no one that dared defy him.
Rinkaku Kagune: As a typical rinkaku user, the kagune mainly added strength and regenerating abilities. Yamori had mastered his kagune to an extent where he could shape it into various forms at will.
Rinkaku Kakuja: The armor packed more punch into his attacks by enveloping more flesh into his thorned tentacle and healed his wounds at a faster rate. Since he was an incomplete kakuja, he had no control and fought like a blind berserker. Superhuman Strength: Yamori was capable of quickly overpowering Kaneki, and bashing him against a wall right afterwards, destroying it in the process.
Other Details: Known as "Jason" of the 13th Ward because his mask resembles a hockey mask from a horror film.

Name: Kisho Arima
Species: Half-human (later revealed to be a half-ghoul hybrid from the Washu Clan's lineage)
Gender: Male
Age: 29-32 throughout the series.
Height: 180 cm
Appearance: Arima was a tall, well-built man with snow white hair and gray eyes. He always wore a pair of thin-framed glasses and a calm apathetic expression. He always dressed in a professional suit and tie, adding the pure white coat that acted as the S3 Squad uniform during operations.
During his youth, Arima had dark blue hair and was much shorter in height. While attending Seishin High School, he wore the standard school uniform. He carried a guitar case with him at all times to conceal his quinque, Yukimura 1/3, as opposed to the standard quinque case.
Background: A legendary and undefeatable Special Class Ghoul Investigator known as the "CCG's Reaper." He is considered the strongest investigator in the history of the CCG. He is later revealed to be the true One-Eyed King and a collaborator with Eto, working to create a world where ghouls and humans could coexist.
Character: Arima was shown to have a very calm personality, he remained unperturbed and composed even when surrounded by several ghouls or facing the monstrous One-Eyed Owl. He was also an overly strict mentor, as seen when he reprimanded Hirako for being off on his attack by one decisecond. As a teenager, Arima exerted the same personality, and also noted his main hobby to be ghoul extermination. He had a very cold and calculating approach to exterminating ghouls as shown when he was about to finish off Renji Yomo, and Yoshimura appeared suddenly; instead of panicking or attacking he merely greeted the ghoul. Arima was shown to respect the dead as he reprimanded Itsuki Marude when he talked ill about Mado after his death.
Despite his stoic demeanor, he was capable of forming friendships, he often borrowed books from Haise Sasaki, and Akira Mado described his feelings towards Sasaki as "parental love." Arima was also the type of person who complimented his ghoul opponents, an example being when he did so when Kaneki damaged his quinque, IXA. Surprisingly while dying he reveals he despised himself for killing ghouls. He admits how happy he is to have done something good by imparting his mission to depose V and become a symbol of hope for ghouls.
Ability: Having extraordinary skill with his quinque, Arima can quickly block projectiles and easily slice through a ghoul's kakuja.
Half-Human Physiology: Being a failed half-ghoul, Arima was granted increased physical abilities at the cost of a shortened life span.
Superhuman Agility: Arima was capable of dodging Kaneki's enormously destructive and rapid attacks, suffering a small cheek wound after the blow, after slaughtering a large amount of fleeing ghouls underground. During his life, he repelled both Yoshimura and Eto. His reflexes are sufficient enough to deflect a barrage of ukaku shards shot by Ayato Kirishima, block Touka's projectiles and parry Yomo's attacks at close-range. He was also able to easily outmaneuver Shachi's attacks, and counter the martial artist's movements. His speed is fast enough that he is able to keep up with Kaneki at his Half kakuja state at Cochlea arc and is able to dodge all of Kaneki's attacks.
Keen Intellect: Arima is shown to be very deductive throughout the series. As a teenager, he easily memorized all the formulas in the math textbook and managed to deduce Uruka Minami as a ghoul with a single piece of evidence. As an adult, Arima secretly uncovered the identity of the "One-Eyed Owl" as Eto Yoshimura and deduced the identity of Ken Kaneki when the two first battle at the end of the original series.
Yukimura 1/3: A koukaku-type quinque that takes the form of a sword consisting of a long, thin blade without a guard. This quinque was used during Arima's early days as an investigator.
IXA: A koukaku-type quinque that takes the form of a lance attached to a gun-sword handle with a spiked pommel. It is able to change form into a shield that is capable of blocking potent attacks coming towards Arima. It is also capable of changing into a secondary offensive form that changes the shape of the quinque into several tentacles which can home and pierce any enemy of Arima's choosing.
Narukami: An ukaku-type quinque that takes the form of four satellite panels attached to a rapier handle. The quinque can shoot condensed Rc cells like lightning that can home towards a target of Arima's choosing. It also has the ability to combine the panels into a single rapier blade sharp enough to slice through the One-Eyed Owl.
Owl: Ripped out of the One-eyed Owl (later revealed to be the Non-Killing Owl Yoshimura) thirteen years ago, this quinque is an SSS-rated ukaku-type that takes the form of an elongated large blade with a long hilt. Being an ukaku quinque, Owl can shoot out concentrated Rc cell projectiles of various sizes. Furthermore, Owl's blade can be released and materialized remotely to launch an attack on a target from an unexpected location.
Other Details: Known as the "White Reaper." He "killed" Kaneki and then appointed him as Haise Sasaki, training him and acting as a mentor. His true goal was to put an end to the corrupt rule of the Washu Clan.

Name: Koutarou Amon
Species: Human (later a One-Eyed Ghoul)
Gender: Male
Age: Late 20s to early 30s.
Height: 191 cm
Appearance: Amon is a very tall, handsome young man with black hair and teal eyes. His distinctive eyebrows are curved at the end. Due to his constant, vigorous training, he has an extremely athletic and muscular build.
Like most ghoul investigators, Amon usually wore a black suit with tie. If he left for an investigation, he additionally wore a white overcoat on top of his suit. He also wears a silver necklace with a cross.
Background: A determined and idealistic Ghoul Investigator who worked alongside Mado and later his daughter, Akira. He is driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to create a world without ghouls. After his supposed death in the Anteiku raid, he is turned into a one-eyed ghoul by the ghoul organization Aogiri Tree.
Character: Due to a personal experience as an orphan during his childhood, Amon came to the conclusion that the world was wrong, therefore he made it his task to change it. Because he believes it is ghouls who are twisting the world, he views their eradication as a way to mend it. After being spared by Ken Kaneki, Amon started to question the righteousness of his crusade and showed interest and curiosity, wanting to understand the ghoul. At heart, Amon is a likable, sympathetic young man with a great sense of justice, dedicated to his cause. So much so that he views his morality as anything done in the name of justice, demonstrated when he dug into a grave, something other investigators saw as immoral. Due to the connection between ghouls and his childhood and being raised by one, the fuel for his actions lie in his soft spot for children. One of the biggest justifications for his hatred of ghouls is the loss of the precious ones for these children. This was best conveyed when he sees an orphaned child taken in by the CCG and is motivated to work instead of rest.
Despite being well set in his mentality of his duties, he is quite apprehensive and insecure about losing people around him. He has lost many people throughout the course of his life and is fearful of losing more, he admits this to himself while fighting Kaneki, who incidentally feels the same.
Ability: He inherited Yoshimura's kakuhou and gained an ukaku kagune as a result, becoming a half-ghoul in the process. Shortly after his transformation, he experienced an uncontrolled surge in Rc cells and has been left in an unstable state as a result. This led to him being labeled a Floppy and discarded by Dr. Kanou. This malfunction was thereafter fixed by the CCG's experiments on him. Due to hybrid vigor, Amon's abilities are said to be more potent than that of a natural-born ghoul.
Ukaku Kagune: He appears to have an ukaku kagune of decent power, capable of firing off numerous projectiles. These can easily blast holes into another ghoul's body, as demonstrated during his brief battle with Shikorae. He exhibits great accuracy, able to hit all four of Ginkui's mouths with four projectiles in an instant. These can vary in size, from small to human-sized, and being powerful enough to pierce through the body of a quinx and to break through Urie's kagune. He also demonstrated that he could form a tentacle which can attack from short to mid-range. He is able to release round bullet-like ukaku attacks, which chopped off Takizawa's leg and broke his full kakuja into pieces.
Ukaku Kakuja: Amon possesses a grotesque and mutated armor. In this form, Amon has a mutated head with multiple eyes and a deformed mouth with multiple blades protruding out of his back. He is able to fire large drill shaped projectiles at a target that are as large as a human body. In his second kakuja form, he is able to produce two large scimitars blades from his shoulders and also multiple smaller ones protruding out of his back. He has a large humanoid form that closely resembles Yoshimura's kakuja form. In this form, he has fought off both Takizawa and Kurona with ease, until the former activated a kakuja of his own. Because of his half kakuja nature, he seems to only go into this form when in extreme duress, such as when Ginkui activated inside his body or after being experimented on by the CCG. Kagune Arm: Amon has a kagune-like arm capable of forming a blade sharp enough to cut through body parts. This arm is durable and capable of blocking powerful attacks. Kagune Detachment: Amon can detach kagune from his arm to complete the form of his quinque, Doujima 1/2. After escaping the CCG labs, Amon's Kagune and Quinque manipulation abilities seem to be enhanced to a whole new level, now being able to freely control the aspect of Doujima, and form Kagune appendages and shields from it. RC Cell Backflow: Upon having been modified in the CCG Labs, Amon seems to be capable of exploding any kagune by direct physical contact, pushing back and affecting the any RC cells, causing the kagune to explode completely. With this, Amon was able to effortlessly explode Takizawa's kagune blade, only a few seconds after being stabbed by him.
Superhuman Strength: Amon was part of the 0.01% of humanity with physical powers rivaling those of ghouls. As a human he trained extensively in weightlifting, his strength allowed him to wield heavy koukaku quinque. As a one-eyed ghoul, Amon manages to rip through Mutsuki's kagune, break free from Ginkui, crush Shinsanpei Aura's kagune with his hand, as well as send Touma Higemaru flying with a single hit and smash a large crater into the ground by simply stomping on it. In his second kakuja form, his strength is empowered to the point he could achieve the same with a single punch.
Superhuman Regeneration: Amon regenerated his torso after Ginkui's remote activation inside his body. In his second kakuja form, his regeneration was so fast that it took him mere moments to recover from the damage he received from both Takizawa and Kurona.
Superhuman Agility: He is incredibly fast, as he disappeared shortly after Saiko took her eyes off him for a very brief period of time.
Superhuman Durability: Amon received multiple frontal heavy attacks and yet showed no signs of weakening after being impaled with a kagune.
Swordsmanship: As an investigator, Amon was proficient and deadly while wielding a quinque, able to easily and efficiently eliminate ghouls.
Doujima 1/2: A simple koukaku quinque which initially took the form of a club used to swing heavy blows that are tough to block. During a fight with Ken Kaneki, it was broken and later repaired using the Bin brothers' kagune. The repaired Doujima 1/2 takes the form of a lance-like spear. For additional offensive power, the brothers' kagune can be projected from the spearhead, spiraling around it in a drill-like manner, but it was destroyed again. Years after the Owl Suppression Operation he still wields the quinque. He carries only its handle section and, when he wishes to release it, uses parts of his kagune to complete its form.
Kura: The koukaku quinque is a quarterstaff with a large blade at its end that can take down multiple ghouls in a single swing. The blade can be separated into dual falchion blades to lure opponents off guard and have a quicker weapon at hand. While the swords are a bit heavy for single hand use, Amon can also throw and retract them for longer reach. Amon used this quinque because its weight was similar to Doujima 1/2's. Mado bestowed the quinque on him in his will. It was destroyed by Kaneki during their fight.
Arata proto • II: A koukaku kakuja quinque that is an upgrade from its predecessor, Arata Proto. This quinque takes the form of a suit of armor that auto-equips onto Amon's body. Arata Proto II augments Amon's strength, speed, and durability to the point of being able to fight toe to toe with Kaneki, an SS-rated ghoul, for a period of time. However, using the quinque bears a heavy burden on the body which could be mitigated due to Amon's high physical abilities. The quinque was destroyed by Ken Kaneki in his kakuja form.
Unnamed Quinque: A quinque of unknown type that Amon used during his early days as an investigator. It took the form of a spear with a harpoon-like head. Its capabilities remain unknown as Amon was disarmed by Kie Muramatsu before he could use it.
Other Details: He is Akira Mado's partner and love interest. He is one of the few investigators who truly tried to understand the ghouls he fought.

Name: Nimura Furuta
Species: Half-ghoul (Human-Ghoul Hybrid)
Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be in his 20s (around 24 at the end of the series)
Height: 172 cm (5'7")
Appearance: Furuta was fairly tall and had dark, medium-length black hair that was parted on his right. A mole laid near the bottom right corner of his right eye. He wore a black overcoat on top of his suit with a bow tie, like Kijima did. He occasionally wore a trench coat with dark-colored gloves.
After the Clown Siege and as Bureau Director, he wore black robes with light-colored detailing. He gained a large scar on the left side of his face as a result of his brief encounter with Dragon, which is covered by his hair.
As the Clown Souta, he always hid his face by wearing his clown mask. He also wore a brown wig and wore a heavily padded business suit to make himself look fat and bulky to truly hide his identity, though his voice remained the same..
Background: A member of the Washu Clan who was raised in the Sunlit Garden, a facility for creating half-ghouls. He worked his way up the ranks of the CCG, eventually becoming its Director. He is also the leader of the Clowns.
Character: At first, Furuta appeared to have a normal and quiet personality. He seemed very polite and soft-spoken, respecting of his superiors, and acted horrified when they were in danger. He was praised and highly regarded by Kijima as a talented associate, enough that he was trusted to act as bait during an ambush of Rose's hunting party.
However, that was a facade used to mask his true motivations and allegiances. In truth, Furuta cared little for other investigators and would manipulate and kill them or even use them as human shields. In contrast to his previous demeanor, Furuta delighted in mocking others and often giving somewhat flippant remarks to his superiors or those he disliked. He could be quite gruesome at times as he made Shunji Shiono into a pâté and fed it to Eto as a meal. Repeatedly, Furuta had displayed a very duplicitous nature, capable of even infiltrating the Clowns and disguising his intentions in order to further his plans.
In spite of this, when looking past Furuta's many masks and faces, he's in fact a broken man who knew he was destined to live a short life. From a very early age, Furuta knew that humans like him would die early deaths as a result of his predecessor's actions, so he decided he'd "destroy" everything since then. His world view is a nihilistic one; everything will end, so it's not wrong to take advantage of the "toy box" and have fun.
In his final moments, he revealed that he truly wanted to live a normal life, rather than living one fated to be short and painful.
Ability: Half-Human Physiology: Born as a failed half-ghoul, Furuta had increased physical capabilities as well as a shortened life span.
Ghoul Physiology: After gaining Rize's kakuhou, Furuta had an increased healing factor along with a rinkaku kagune.
Rinkaku Kagune: Furuta displayed his kagune in his fight against Eto, possessing one to two tentacles that could easily slice through Eto’s kakuja while she was in a weakened state. During his fight with Marude, he could produce three tentacles with spikes, each resembling Kaneki's first centipede-like incomplete kakuja. One of the tentacles were able to produce a wide mouth with teeth. During the defense of Tokyo, Furuta brandished four massive and thorned tentacles similar to the ones developed by Dragon, easily shredding into an unprepared Kaneki. During his duel with Kaneki, Furuta's kagune became a large black mass with multiple eyes that worked in the manner of tentacles, able to expand through large distances and form into numerous spikes.
Rinkaku Kakuja: Furuta possessed a Rinkaku Kakuja that covered over him as a body armour with a flesh pattern. In his Kakuja form, Furuta was capable of developing a pair of centipede-like tentacles with spikes at their sides and large eyes surrounding their length. His face was covered in flesh with a set of large sharp teeth and a single flaring eye.
Superhuman Strength: When he provoked an investigator, he ripped off Matsumae’s kagune without any problems and proceeded to throw it with a force strong enough to crack the wall behind the dead investigator.
Superhuman Regeneration: Furuta displayed a high capability of regeneration, being able to survive getting impaled through the stomach, bombarded by countless firearms, exploded by a launcher, and torn apart by a berserk Kaneki in Kakuja. He was capable of regenerating his body nearly immediately, reattaching severed limbs, and even recreating the clothes he wore.
Swordsmanship: When wielding his quinque, Furuta used it in a destructive manner and sliced up the things around him.
Tsunagi : A bikaku-type mass-produced sword quinque. He seemed to have temporarily abandoned it during his fight with Matsumae in favor of Rotten Follow.
Rotten Follow: A chainsaw quinque powered by a rinkaku-type kakuhou. Furuta inherited this quinque from his deceased former superior Kijima, and used it for the first time to attack and finish off Matsumae during the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation.
Katana: The same Katana blade brandished by V, Furuta wielded this weapon with masterful precision, and seemed to often rely on it after becoming the Bureau Chief. It is unknown whether this Katana is a quinque, however it seems to possess the ability to slice into even the strongest of ghouls.
Other Details: Also known by the alias Souta. His life as a test subject fueled his deep-seated resentment and desire to destroy the world.

Name: Kureo Mado
Species: Human (CCG Investigator)
Gender: Male
Age: Appears to be in his 40s or 50s
Height: 176 cm (5'9")
Appearance: Kureo was a middle-aged man with sunken cheeks that reminded Amon of a dead person. He had long, stringy, white hair and was often seen with a huge grin on his face. He had a slim body and stooped shoulders, causing him to appear considerably shorter. He was often seen with one bulging eye, and one squinting eye.
He wore a white dress shirt and light dress pants, and black dress shoes. He wore a dark red necktie and a grey trench coat, adorned with shiny, silver accents. He was characteristically seen wearing white gloves. He was rarely seen without his briefcase.
In his younger days, Kureo's expression was normal, and his hair was shorter.
Background: A First-Class Ghoul Investigator and the mentor of Amon Koutarou. His wife was killed by a ghoul, which fueled his obsessive hatred for all ghouls. He is known for his meticulous and fanatical approach to ghoul hunting.
Character: Mado was known for his obsession for ghouls and their kagunes for the purpose of making quinques. He frequently waited for the ghoul he hunted to bring out their kagune in order to obtain it, according to how all investigators do when looking forward to a new quinque. His uncommon enthusiasm toward ghoul hunting stemmed from when his wife, Kasuka, was ordered to hold off the One-Eyed Owl alone and died about ten years previously during an investigation in the 24th ward. This tragic event left him and his daughter, Akira, devastated. He gave in to the overwhelming desire for revenge, which made his obsession for ghouls akin to a coping mechanism, that shaped who he is at the present.
As an investigator, years of veteran-ship and expertise had given him a deep insight and intuition to sense a slight detail to determine someone's status as a ghoul. His deductions had led Amon to admire and learn from him as mentor to mentee. While Kureo was violent and cruel towards ghouls, to his fellow humans and brethren-in-arms he was just an ordinary old man with good work ethics, though considered weird by many people. He was capable of loving and caring, as indicated that he was married and acted as a very dedicated teacher to his juniors.
Ten years ago, he used to be partners with Yukinori Shinohara and Fujishige Iba during the Owl case. Mado seemed eccentric and senile from outward appearance, but he was one of the best investigators around as an expert in combat and a pioneer in quinque engineering. According to Akira, he never wanted nor attempted to achieve a higher rank than First Class Investigator, saying it was all he needed to go after the Owl and looked down on those who blindly chased ranks within the CCG.
However, the grief from his wife's death created a turmoil of rage targeted at all ghouls, and this made him rather sadistic towards ghouls. This was showcased when he laughed at and tormented Hinami about the deaths of her parents and told her she would join them soon enough, even though she was only a child who had emotions just like humans. Along with this, he belittled Hinami's mother and despite her desperate pleas, took immense pleasure in watching her death. This showed his extremely violent, almost psychopathic nature towards all ghouls and his inability for empathy and understanding for others in that sense.
Ability: Known as the "Quinque Fanatic," Mado collected and used many different quinques during his career and was an experienced fighter. In Tokyo Ghoul, he was seen wielding two different quinques:
Unnamed Quinque: The first quinque Mado was seen using in the anime. It is believed to be a bikaku-type quinque. It was destroyed by Yakumo Oomori.
Fueguchi One: This is a rinkaku quinque that was created from Asaki Fueguchi's kagune. It looks like a spine that was tied together. It is a high speed combat quinque with a sharp cut. It was later given to Akira Mado.
Fueguchi Two: This is a koukaku quinque that was created from Ryouko Fueguchi's kagune. It has the appearance of flower petals that spread in four directions. It can defend against attacks of any kagune and counterattack with a thrust. This quinque combines both offense and defense.
Other Details: His obsession with ghouls leads to his death at the hands of Hinami Fueguchi. His quinques, made from Hinami's parents' kagune, were a major source of his power and his fanaticism.

Hideyoshi Nagachika Name: Hideyoshi Nagachika (often called Hide)
Species: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 18 at the start of the series; 21-22 in Tokyo Ghoul:re
Height: 171 cm (5'7")
Appearance: Hideyoshi is a young man of average height with short, messy, dirty blonde hair with dark roots and olive eyes. He tends to wear bright colored clothes that consist of a yellow varsity jacket and green shorts. Because of his love for music, he usually wears a pair of headphones around his neck.
After the Aogiri arc, he lets his hair grow out, and most of the time he wears a red and white cap, and he no longer wears headphones. He mostly wears a light-blue jacket over a white dress-shirt with a red collar that serves as his uniform. He also carries around a green bag, black pants and green shoes, aligned with yellow.
During the Owl Suppression Operation he wears a military CCG uniform consisting of a black long-sleeved shirt, gray vest and black trousers.
Several years later, he continues to wear casual clothing and has cut his hair back into the short style he wore during college. When not wearing his Scarecrow costume, he opts to wear a scarf to conceal the lower half of his face and his throat. Underneath, heavy scarring covers his face from just above his upper lip and extending down to his left clavicle. The flesh has been almost completely stripped from his lower face, exposing his teeth and leaving very little to cover the bone structure. The Zygomaticus major muscle is missing, leaving a large hole in his left cheek. The damage continues down his throat, with a vocal prosthesis surgically implanted into his neck and several areas where the skin has been torn away. Across his left clavicle, there is exposed muscle tissue and evidence of the skin being stripped away.
Six years after the events of :re, his neck has healed back to a normal skin tone. Although his lips are likely still destroyed, so he opts to wear a face mask rather than a full bandana, covering his mouth but not his neck anymore.
Background: Ken Kaneki's best friend since childhood. He is an exceptionally perceptive and loyal friend who works to uncover the truth about ghouls and find Kaneki after his disappearance. He later becomes a CCG trainee to aid in his search.
Character: Most of the time, Hide has a carefree attitude, always joyful and friendly, which greatly annoyed Nishio. He doesn’t seem to share relationships with people beside Kaneki, despite his appearance. He commented to Kaneki that even though he hung out with Nishiki, he thought he was poisonous, and that he might even hate him. Hide is also incredibly observant and can figure things out about people in an almost Sherlock-like manner. He also becomes interested in things and works hard on them until he finds something else that interests him. Hide claims to have a habit of pretending to be a detective by putting tracking devices on suspicious people and notifying the authorities if his intuitions turn out to be right (however, the "hobby" part of it is most likely a lie he made up to hide his true motive from the CCG, which was to find clues about Kaneki's whereabouts).
Ability: Hide has proved to be very perceptive and observant, being able to distinguish the difference between the two Rabbit ghouls, while also noticing the changes and habits of people.
Other Details: He is the light and moral compass of the series. His unwavering friendship with Kaneki is a core theme and a powerful force that influences the choices of those around him.

Name: Rize Kamishiro
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Female
Age: Appears to be in her late teens or early 20s
Height: 164 cm
Appearance: Rize appeared to be a slender girl of average height with an hourglass figure. She has chest-length purple hair that has bangs swept to the left side, purple eyes, thin eyebrows and full lips.
As a ghoul blending into human society, she wore normal attire fit for a young woman, showing a bigger preference for dresses. After she had moved to the 20th ward, she was seen wearing a pair of red frame glasses (the frames being only at the lower half of the lens), even though she did not seem to have any eyesight problems. Her attire revealed some cleavage, possibly to seduce and allure males as her prey. Rize was very attractive and is aware of this fact, often manipulating it to her advantage.
After her transformation into Dragon, Rize had long white hair with decorative marks around a paled face near her eyelids and across her forehead.
In her younger days, she had shorter hair.
Background: An infamous ghoul known as the "Binge Eater." She left her organization to live freely, consuming humans voraciously. Her encounter with Ken Kaneki is the incident that turns him into a one-eyed ghoul after her kakuhou is transplanted into him.
Character: Rize was a voracious, independent ghoul who acted as a femme fatale to those who fell victim to her charms. She was an enigmatic female with many acquaintances who were left with a mysterious impression of her, and those who came into conflict with her rarely came out alive, with the exception of Kazuichi Banjou, who found her self-dependence and strength attractive. She was extremely selfish who thought little to none of the hardship her binge eating habit caused to other ghouls. She had no ambitions and wandered the wards aimlessly to appease her boredom.
After she was rescued by Renji Yomo, it was shown that the effects of captivity and starvation had reduced her to a near-mindless state as she was unable to recognize her surroundings and had to be kept in restraints. This also brought out a vulnerable side of Rize as she cried out to her foster father in fear.
Ability: Living as a ghoul, Rize possessed high physical capabilities along with a rinkaku kagune. Rize was considered strong even among powerful ghouls, and her kagune was well capable of taking down multiple opponents in one go.
Rinkaku Kagune: Her kagune was special because it had an abnormal regenerating factor even among the rinkaku types. She was able to summon up to six tentacle claws, portrayed as bright red in the anime. While slim, each claw could cut deeply enough to fatally injure anyone effortlessly, human or ghoul. Yoshimura explained, despite having a superior cellular regeneration, if sufficient damage harmed her vitals then even with a fast recovering body it would not regenerate from fatal wounds; like the steel beam that crushed her waist and ultimately led to her "accident."
Dragon Form: As Dragon, Rize's appearance was drastically altered. She had long white hair and a pale face with numerous decorative marks around her eyelids and forehead, and her body was attached to the core of Dragon. She was able to wield numerous massive tentacles similar to the heads of a hydra, each having a mouth with sharp teeth at their edges, and long hair akin to Rize's. Through Dragon, she released a ghoulification toxin into the entirety of Tokyo, turning countless humans into ghouls in the process.
Other Details: Her presence haunts Kaneki's mind, acting as his inner ghoul and the source of his monstrous power.

Name: Shuu Tsukiyama
Species: Ghoul
Gender: Male
Age: 20 at the start of the series; 23 in Tokyo Ghoul:re
Height: 180 cm
Appearance: Tsukiyama is a tall, attractive, young man with a gentle look likened to his mother's.[3] He considers himself fashionable and usually dresses in European attire, though his sense of style is questionable. He typically wears formal suits or semi-formal dress-shirts and long pants decorated with bold contrasting colors (usually red and purplish blue) and eccentric patterns such as stripes, flowers, or geometric shapes. His brightly blue hair was usually neatly combed, with a characteristic long fringe neatly swept towards the left. Upon his first appearance, Kaneki thought to himself that he looked like a model.
He possesses a mask shaped like a crescent moon as a reference to his name.
Two years later, his lengthy depression had significantly altered his physical appearance. As a result of his starvation, he became emaciated with visible sternum and sunken facial features. His kagune, when out of control, wrapped him up and gave him a monstrous appearance. Due to his poor health, he had unkempt hair and nails and wore a plain sleeping robe.
After he found out Kaneki was still alive, he made a speedy recovery and resumed his previous appearance plus flamboyant mannerisms, however in a much more mellow manner.
During the Rushima Landing Operation, he wore a dark robe with black clothing underneath.
Background: The head of the wealthy and influential Tsukiyama family. He is a well-known connoisseur of food and becomes obsessed with Ken Kaneki after smelling his unique half-ghoul scent.
Character: In the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul, Tsukiyama appeared to be a confident, friendly, and intelligent ghoul. However, these were merely acts to lure his "prey" into the Ghoul Restaurant and to conceal his eccentric, cruel, and selfish personality. He considered himself a strong predator who would seek to devour the finest meals he made of his "prey" and would not hesitate to resort to any merciless tactics in order to achieve his goals. As a result, he was disliked by most ghouls in the 20th ward. His interest in European literature and language was shown in his gestures and mannerisms, his dialogue often peppered with random phrases of English, French, and Italian. Family associates have likened his intellectual gestures to those of his young father.[4] (In the anime, he showed great anger towards others who disrespect his taste in food.) Tsukiyama felt insulted when Rize Kamishiro declined his invitation to join the Ghoul Restaurant, who mocked the "classy" eating habits of the restaurant that resembled the humans'. Therefore, Tsukiyama bore grudges over Rize and called her a "pig" for ridiculing his taste in food. He had poor control over his emotions, with intense outbursts or "meltdowns" especially when it came to losing something important or failing to capture his "gourmet target." During times when he was calm and rationale, he seemed to be quite intelligent and often came up with strategies to help his comrades. He compared himself to a noble "knight," especially later when in the service of Kaneki. Besides food, he also enjoys reading, fashion, and playing the piano.
In the earlier series of Tokyo Ghoul, Tsukiyama seemed to have little understanding of others' feelings and how relationships worked. He called his only human friend Chie Hori a "pet," in order to rationalize his lack of interest in eating her. He also did not understand Nishiki Nishio's feelings for Kimi Nishino and assumed that she might also just be a precious pet to him. Although he did not have many friends and generally not being well-liked by others, it was reflected during his first conversation with Kaneki that he actually wanted a good friend whom he could talk to share his interests with. However, he failed to acknowledge this and was revealed later in Tokyo Ghoul that he continued to consider his feelings of friendship and care towards Kaneki as a mere pursuit of "gourmet food." Despite his poor social skills, he occasionally showed genuine care towards people he valued. For example, he tried to cheer up Kaneki after his breakdown at Kanou's lab, brought flowers to please Hinami Fueguchi when she was feeling down, and gave encouraging words to Kanae when he first joined Tsukiyama's family.
As the story progresses, his personality underwent significant changes as a result of his encounter with Kaneki's group and lengthy depression later on. The deterioration of his health damaged his mental state and caused him to suffer terrifying bouts of violence. To address these, his servants resorted to drugging him to keep him calm. When he was calmed, he was somber and deeply withdrawn from the world. He is well-liked by his servants, especially Kanae and Matsumae, with whom he had developed a strong bond since he was young.
After his recovery from his depression, he shows significant maturation in his character. He has become more humble and recognizes the importance of his family and friends. He is deeply saddened when he learns his servants went overboard with hunting for the sake of finding food for him, and feels he should be responsible for Yuuma's capture by the CCG. He apologizes to his servants for the problems his condition had caused and expresses his gratitude. He is also determined to act on his own in order to save Yuuma and protect his other servants from further dangers. When he discovers that Kaneki is still alive as "Sasaki," he admits he has no longer considered him as "food" for a long time and is determined to help him get back his memories. He genuinely cares about Hori and friends from Anteiku and even admits he is egocentric.
Ability: Living as a full ghoul, Tsukiyama possesses a koukaku kagune along with increased physical capabilities.
Koukaku Kagune: He can form a linear metallic ribbon that can wrap into a flexible spiral that doubles as armor to shield his upper body. To extend his reach, he can form it into a large, sword-like blade that is suited to thrusting and stabbing.
Superhuman Durability: During his fight with Touka, Tsukiyama was able to survive having his arm and part of his face torn off.
Superhuman Agility and Speed: During his fight with Touka Kirishima, Tsukiyama demonstrated speed and mobility that does not match the usual physical cababilities of most heavy-weight Koukaku ghouls. (When using the kagune)
Other Details: Known as the "Gourmet" for his refined tastes. He is a central comedic and tragic character who demonstrates both deep loyalty and emotional pain.
