Then, a man stepped inside.

Tohru Kitagawa.

He moved with a quiet precision that was unmistakably familiar. Just as his height had only increased over the years, so too had the sharpness of his posture; if anything, it had refined itself into dignity. There was always something so particular about the way he carried himself—reticent, like a figure that had long since learned to take up only as much space as necessary.

Without saying a word, Tohru set his bag down by the chair before taking a seat at a corner table. His hands folded themselves neatly atop the wooden surface, as if the act of sitting were a conclusion to something unseen.

He didn’t scan the room for familiar faces. He didn’t look for anyone. If he noticed the subtle shift in atmosphere, the way his presence disrupted the rhythm of a place that had long since moved past him, he gave no indication. Tohru practiced indifference with relative ease, as though slipping seamlessly into an old, forgotten routine. That is, as if by acting like nothing had changed, he could make it so.

And yet, much about him had. His hair, once a deep black, had since lightened at the roots, fading into a soft brown from the use of bleach. The cool detachment in his demeanor, the faint tension at his shoulders, all of it bespoke a man well aware that he no longer belonged to the world he had stepped into. It wasn’t that time had made him unrecognizable. It was that the person who had once occupied this space had long since faded, leaving behind only a stranger in his place.

His eyes, however, those were the same. Sad, weary eyes made of glass that only reflected back its surroundings, speaking nothing of himself. Instead, they remained fixed on the window, vacant and unfocused, as though staring past it into nothingness.

Tohru Kitagawa had not looked up. He had not yet noticed the one person he never expected to cross paths with again. For now, he remained still. After all, he was just another decoration in the background of a world that had yet to readjust itself to his return.

Whatever lingered behind that expression, whatever thoughts he kept locked away, they remained just out of reach.
