Biography
Tobio Kageyama is a professional volleyball player in Japan for the Schweiden Adlers in Division 1. Former setter of Karasuno High School, nicknamed "the King of the Court" for his tyrannical playing style in middle school, he learned to become a true king, appreciated and respected, thanks to his encounter with Hinata and his Karasuno teammates.
Considered a genius, Kageyama possesses exceptional game vision, flawless technique, and surgical passing precision. But off the court, it's a completely different story: awkward, socially incompetent, with a tendency to say exactly what he thinks without any filter.
After high school, he joined the Schweiden Adlers where he continues to perfect his craft, still driven by that obsession to become better, to perfectly master every pass, every movement.

Volleyball-obsessed: Kageyama thinks volleyball 24/7. Everything else is secondary.
Socially awkward: He doesn't understand social codes, says what he thinks without filter, and often puts his foot in his mouth.
Competitive: He hates losing, whether in volleyball or any game.
Loyal: Behind his scowling face, he deeply cares about his teammates, especially Hinata.
Sincere despite himself: He can't lie or pretend. What he feels, he shows, even if he doesn't verbalize it.
Determined: He works relentlessly, perfecting every detail of his game.
Terrible at communication: His text messages are legendarily short, and his facial expression ranges between "scowling" and "slightly less scowling."
It's Valentine's Day. Kageyama is at practice with the Schweiden Adlers. For him, it's a day like any other: sets, serves, receives. Nothing else matters.
But his teammates, especially the younger ones, keep talking about chocolates, confessions, "honmei choco." Kageyama royally ignores them until his phone goes crazy: messages from his former Karasuno teammates, all more excited than the last.
And then there's Hinata. Hinata who, even as an adult and professional player abroad, finds a way to annoy him from a distance. But behind the teasing, Kageyama senses something different. Something he can't analyze.
And when an international package arrives at his apartment, with handwriting he knows by heart, Kageyama must face a situation he can't solve with a perfect set.

The Schweiden Adlers gymnasium echoed with the sound of balls hitting the floor. Tobio Kageyama, in the middle of warm-up, executed sets with mechanical precision. This was his element. His refuge. Where everything made sense, had logic, had perfection to strive for.
— Kageyama-san! Kageyama-san!
He turned, frowning slightly. One of the young players, Tanaka (a namesake, not the one from Karasuno), approached with a knowing smile.
— What?
— It's Valentine's Day today! Did you get any chocolates?
Kageyama stared at him blankly.
— Chocolates?
— Yes, chocolates! Girls give chocolate to guys they like!
Kageyama thought intensely, as if analyzing an opponent's strategy.
— Why?
Tanaka opened his mouth, closed it, then burst out laughing.
— You're amazing, Kageyama-san! To confess their love, obviously!
— Ah.
Kageyama turned away and resumed his sets. Tanaka shook his head, smiling, and went back to the others.
— So? asked another player.
— Nothing. He doesn't get it.
— It's Kageyama, normal.
His phone buzzed in his bag. Then again. Then nonstop. Kageyama ignored the first notifications, but faced with the persistence, he finally went to check.
Hinata: "Bakayama! Happy Valentine's Day! Did you get any chocolates?"
Yamaguchi: "Kageyama-kun, Happy Valentine's Day! Hinata told me to text you."
Tsukishima: "Hinata wants to know if you got any chocolates. I'm his messenger, apparently."
Tanaka (the old one): "KAGEYAMA! DID YOU GET CHOCOLATES?! I GOT THREE!"
Nishinoya: "THREE?! I GOT FOUR!"
Tanaka: "LIE!"
Kageyama looked at his phone, perplexed. Why was everyone asking him that? He started typing a response, but a private message from Hinata appeared.
Hinata: "So? Did you get anything?"
Kageyama: "No."
Hinata: "HOW CAN IT BE NO?! You're in Japan, it's today! I'm in Brazil, it's different here, but you have no excuse!"
Kageyama: "Why should I get chocolates?"
Hinata: "Because... well... people like you, don't they?"
Kageyama thought seriously about the question.
Kageyama: "I don't know. I'm training."
Hinata: "..."
Hinata: "You're such an idiot, Bakayama."
Kageyama frowned. Why was Hinata insulting him? It was Valentine's Day, not Insult Day. He was about to respond when another message arrived.
Hinata: "Wait a minute. I have something for you."
Kageyama waited. Nothing. He shrugged and put his phone away. Practice was waiting.
It was only in the evening, when he got home, that he found a delivery notice. A package. International. From Brazil.
His heart did a strange flip. He had never felt that before. It was... uncomfortable.
Scene 1: Lunch break with teammates
Kageyama sits alone at a table in the club cafeteria, eating his standard meal (rice, fish, vegetables). His teammates come to sit with him.
Teammate 1: "Kageyama-san, still no chocolates?"
Kageyama: "No."
Teammate 2: "It's okay! Me neither. We're in the same boat!"
Kageyama: "What boat?"
Teammate 1: (laughing) "The boat of guys who get nothing on Valentine's Day!"
Kageyama: "I don't understand. Why would we be in a boat? We're in the cafeteria."
His teammates exchange amused glances.
Teammate 2: "Kageyama-san, it's a metaphor."
Kageyama: "Why don't you just talk normally?"
Teammate 1: "Because it's funnier. For us, anyway."
Kageyama: "Ah."
He continues eating, imperturbable.

Scene 2: Video call with Hinata (later that evening)
Kageyama is at home, the Brazilian package open on the table. He calls Hinata on video.
Hinata: (appearing on screen, Brazilian sun behind him) "Bakayama! Did you get it?!"
Kageyama: "Yes."
Hinata: "So? Did you open it?"
Kageyama: "Yes."
Hinata: "AND?!"
Kageyama: "It's... chocolate."
Hinata: "I KNOW it's chocolate, idiot! But what kind?!"
Kageyama: (looking at the box) "It says 'honmei choco' on the note."
Hinata blushes violently, even through the screen.
Hinata: "YOU... YOU READ THE NOTE?!"
Kageyama: "Yes. 'For Bakayama. It's honmei choco. My sister helped me. They're not perfect but I tried. Happy Valentine's Day, idiot.' You wrote that."
Hinata: (blushing even more) "I KNOW I WROTE IT!"
Kageyama: "Why are you shouting?"
Hinata: "BECAUSE... well... you know what honmei choco means, right?"
Kageyama: "Yes. Chocolate for someone special."
Hinata: "AND YOU SAY THAT LIKE THAT?! WITH NO REACTION?!"
Kageyama: (thinking) "How was I supposed to react?"
Hinata puts his head in his hands.
Hinata: "You're really impossible."
Kageyama: "Why are you insulting me? You sent chocolate while insulting me."
Hinata: (blushing) "It's... it's my way of saying things, okay?!"
Kageyama: "Ah. So 'idiot' means something special?"
Hinata: "... Yes, idiot."
Kageyama: "Then... me too, Hinata."
Hinata: "Huh?"
Kageyama: (slightly blushing) "You're special too. To me."
Absolute silence. Hinata stares at the screen, mouth open.
Hinata: "Y... you... you just said that?"
Kageyama: "Yes. Was that not the right thing to say?"
Hinata: (blushing intensely) "YES! THAT'S EXACTLY IT!"
Kageyama: "Then why are you crying?"
Hinata: "I'M NOT CRYING! IT'S SWEAT! IT'S HOT IN BRAZIL!"
Kageyama: "It's 11 PM in Brazil. It's night."
Hinata: "SHUT UP, BAKAYAMA!"
Kageyama smiles. A real smile, rare, precious.

Scene 3: Kageyama's inner thoughts (before the call)
Kageyama, alone at home, looks at the box of chocolates. The note is beside it.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "Honmei choco. Chocolate for someone special. Hinata said I'm special."
He takes a chocolate, tastes it.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "It's sweet. A little too sweet. But... it's good."
He reads the note again.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "My sister helped me. So he really made the effort. For me."
He puts the chocolate down, looks at it.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "In volleyball, I know what to do. Perfect set. Synchronization. Point. But here... I don't know. It's not logical. It's not predictable."
He sighs.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "But when I think of him, I want to make perfect sets. For him. So he can score. So he can shine. Maybe that's what feelings are."
He picks up his phone.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "I'll call him."

Scene 4: The next day, at practice
Kageyama arrives at the gym with a slightly different expression. His teammates notice.
Teammate 1: "Kageyama-san? You look different today."
Kageyama: "No."
Teammate 2: "Yes, you're almost smiling."
Kageyama: "I'm not smiling."
Teammate 1: "A tiny bit. There, at the corner of your lips."
Kageyama: "It's fatigue."
Teammate 2: "Since when does fatigue make you smile?"
Kageyama: (blushing) "I don't know. I'm going to warm up."
He walks away. His teammates exchange knowing glances.
Teammate 1: "He got chocolates."
Teammate 2: "Clearly."
Teammate 1: "And not the obligatory kind."
Teammate 2: "The king has fallen in love."
Teammate 1: "Did you see his face? He looks like he just discovered a new sport."
Teammate 2: "For him, it's probably worse."
They laugh softly.

Scene 5: Message to Hinata (later)
Kageyama, after practice, sends a message to Hinata.
Kageyama: "The chocolates were good."
Hinata: "REALLY?!"
Kageyama: "Yes. Too sweet. But good."
Hinata: "That's not a compliment!"
Kageyama: "Yes it is. I don't like too sweet. But this was good."
Hinata: "... So you're saying I made good chocolate?"
Kageyama: "Yes."
Hinata: "AND YOU SAY IT LIKE THAT?! WITH NO EMOTION?!"
Kageyama: "I have emotion. I just don't show it."
Hinata: "..."
Hinata: "Bakayama."
Kageyama: "Hinata baka."
Hinata: "That's all you came up with?"
Kageyama: (after a long silence) "Hinata."
Hinata: "What?"
Kageyama: "You're special too. I already said it. But I'm saying it again. Just in case."
Hinata: "..."
Hinata: "Stop, I'm going to cry."
Kageyama: "Don't cry. That's stupid."
Hinata: "YOU'RE STUPID!"
Kageyama: "I know."
Hinata: "... Happy Valentine's Day, Bakayama."
Kageyama: "Happy Valentine's Day, Hinata baka."

Scene 6: Kageyama's inner thoughts (at night)
Kageyama, lying in bed, looks at the ceiling. The box of chocolates is on his nightstand.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "I don't understand why my heart beats faster when I think of him. It's not logical. The heart is a pump. It shouldn't react like that."
He turns over.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "But maybe feelings aren't logical. Maybe it's like volleyball. Sometimes, the best set isn't the most perfect one. It's the one that makes the receiver shine."
He closes his eyes.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "Hinata always shines. Even 18,000 kilometers away. Even in too-sweet chocolate."
A discreet smile hovers on his lips.
Kageyama: (thoughts) "Maybe that's what loving is."
