The heavy tread of combat boots echoed through the dimly lit alley as Tobias Marsh made his way towards the seedy bar. His muscular frame, honed from years of violence and combat, moved with a predatory grace. The faded scars that marked his weathered skin were a testament to the battles he'd fought and won.
Stepping through the doorway, Tobias scanned the room with a practiced eye, taking in the assortment of lowlifes and scum that populated the joint. The tang of cheap liquor and stale smoke assaulted his nostrils. Just another dive in this godforsaken wasteland they called Nevada.
His steely gaze landed on his quarry - the client who'd hired him for this latest job. Tobias strode over, the other patrons scrambling to get out of his way. He had a reputation in these parts. Cross Tobias Marsh and you'd be spitting teeth, if you were lucky.
"I'm here. Let's talk business," Tobias growled as he slid into the booth. He casually placed his M60 on the table, a not-so-subtle reminder of who held the power here. The sword hilt rising over his shoulder glinted in the low light.
Another job, another payday, Tobias mused to himself. As long as the bills keep flowing, I'll play along. But cross me and there'll be hell to pay. He cracked his knuckles, the sound like gunshots in the now hushed bar. Time to see what this joker wanted.
Tobias leaned back, his posture relaxed but ready. A humorless smile curved his lips, a wolf baring its fangs. "So, what's the deal?"

Tobias moved through the crowded streets of the Nevadean city like a predator on the hunt. His intense grey eyes, hidden behind red-tinted glasses, scanned the throngs of people for his target. He adjusted the heavy M60 machine gun slung across his back, the weapon as much a part of him as his own limbs. The sword sheathed at his hip bumped against his muscular thigh with each long-legged stride.
He was close, he could feel it in his bones. The stench of his prey's fear reached him even over the city's pungent cocktail of sweat, smog and desperation. Tobias allowed himself a grim smile. Won't be long now, he thought. Nowhere left to run.
A flicker of movement ahead caught his eye - a flash of clothing, a nervous glance cast over a shoulder. Bingo. Tobias quickened his pace, his heavy boots thudding against the cracked pavement. He shouldered his way past scrawny street urchins and weathered whores, his imposing bulk and aura of danger sending them scurrying out of his path.
His target ducked into a shadowed alley in a futile attempt to evade him. Tobias followed, one hand falling to the hilt of his sword. "End of the line," he called out, his gravelly voice echoing off the graffitied brick walls. "Time to stop running and face what's coming to you. Someone paid good money for this, after all."
He unsheathed his sword, the rasp of metal on leather loud in the sudden stillness. A rat skittered across his boot. Tobias barely noticed, all his focus on the cornered silhouette ahead of him. He inhaled deeply, savoring the coppery tang of imminent violence. It's gonna be a good day, he thought, as he advanced on his hapless quarry, blade at the ready and a wolfish grin on his craggy face.

Tobias Marsh strode into the dingy backroom that served as the temporary headquarters for his recently assembled mercenary squad. His heavy boots thudded against the concrete floor, announcing his presence with each purposeful step. The grizzled veteran cast his steely gaze over the rag-tag group of fighters, assessing each one with a critical eye.
There was the usual assortment of hardened Nevadean mercs - gruff, battle-scarred men and women who looked like they'd seen their fair share of shit. But there was also a new face among them, some fresh-faced kid who looked like he'd piss their pants hearing a gunshot. Tobias sneered slightly. Fuckin' rookie. Probably still has delusions of glory, he thought to himself with a cynical shake of his head.
Clearing his throat, Tobias addressed the group in his rough, gravelly voice. "Listen up, you sorry sacks of shit," he growled, his tone equal parts mocking and authoritative. "I know most of you are just here for the money, and that's fine by me. But let's get one thing straight - when you're on my team, you follow my orders. No questions asked."
He paused, letting his words sink in as he fixed each merc with his intense, unblinking stare. "We've got a job to do for Doc. Some fancy tech he needs for that Engine of his. I don't care what it takes, we're going to get it done. Understand?" The mercs nodded their assent, some more eagerly than others.
Tobias' gaze finally settled on the greenhorn merc. He jerked his chin towards them. "You. What's your name, rookie?"

In the crude mercenary headquarters, Tobias Marsh sits alone sharpening his longsword, the rasping of the whetstone against steel filling the room. His other hand cradles a half-empty glass of whiskey, the amber liquid sloshing as he takes a swig.
Nearby, his prized M60 machine gun rests on the table, partially disassembled for cleaning. The scent of gun oil hangs heavy in the air. Tobias sets down his blade and turns his attention to the weapon, methodically running an oiled rag over each component with a practiced hand. Under his breath, he grumbles, "Damn thing better not jam on me again. Last thing I need is to be caught with my pants down in a firefight."
He reassembles the gun with quick, efficient movements, the metal parts clicking into place. Hefting the M60, he peers through the sights, getting a feel for the weight and balance. Not as young as I used to be, Tobias muses to himself, but I can still outshoot any of these young punks. They haven't seen half the shit I have.
With a grunt, he slings the machine gun over his shoulder and sheaths his sword across his back. He drains the last of his whiskey and slams the glass down on the table. Rising to his feet, Tobias rolls his shoulders and cracks his neck, mentally preparing himself for the mission ahead. There's good money riding on this job - and Tobias Marsh always gets paid, one way or another.
These damn contracts never get any easier. But as long as the money's good... He shrugs to himself, a wry smirk on his chiseled features. Satisfied with the condition of his gun, Tobias slings it over his broad shoulders, the strap straining against his muscular frame.
He reaches for his sheathed longsword next, drawing the gleaming blade with a rasping sound. The sword feels like an extension of his arm as he gives it a few practice swings, his stance low and powerful.
"Time to get this shit done," Tobias growls under his breath, sliding the sword back into its sheath with a decisive click. He adjusts his red beret and walks out to join his hired fighters, his heavy boots thumping on the metal grating. There's a dangerous glint behind his red-tinted glasses - the look of a man ready for battle.

Time to remind this deadbeat who he's dealing with, Tobias thinks to himself, a half-smirk tugging at his lips beneath his grey goatee.
"You've been avoidin' me," Tobias says, his gruff voice cutting through the tense silence. "I don't take kindly to folks who don't pay their debts. You've got 'til the count of three to hand over what you owe me, or things are gonna get real unpleasant, real fast."
He places a hand on the hilt of his sheathed longsword, his stance radiating an aura of raw power and dominance. "One..."

Those were simpler times, he muses, before everything went to shit.*He takes a swig, the whiskey burning his throat. Fucking job. Tobias thinks bitterly. Should've been there. Should've protected the boss. But he wasn't there. And now he's just another hired gun, loyalty sold to the highest bidder.
Tobias sets the glass down with a heavy thud, the ice clinking against the sides. He runs a hand over his short grey hair and adjusts his red beret. "No use dwelling on it now," he grumbles to himself, voice rough and gravelly. "Gotta keep moving forward. Gotta keep getting paid."
With that, he stands, grabbing his M60 and slinging it over his broad shoulders. Time to see what the day has in store. Tobias steps out into the unforgiving Nevadean city, ready for whatever the harsh world decides to throw at him next.
