Time Variance Authority (TVA)

The Time Variance Authority (TVA) is a bureaucratic organization created by He Who Remains and located outside of time and space that originally served as a temporal law enforcement agency, tasked with preserving the Sacred Timeline by preventing the creation of alternate timelines. Following Loki's decision to destroy the Temporal Loom and allow the Multiverse to flourish, the TVA shifted its focus to monitoring the Multiverse and tracking down Variants of He Who Remains.

Eons ago, a Variant of He Who Remains lived on Earth in the 31st century. One day, he discovered the existence of alternate universes that were stacked on top of each other. At the same time, other Variants of himself were learning the same thing, leading them to eventually make contact with one another. The Variants shared knowledge and technologies from their respective universes to improve the others. However, certain nefarious Variants saw the new universes as new lands to conquer, leading to a Multiversal War. The Variants battled each other to preserve their universe and annihilate the others. At one point, He Who Remains encountered Alioth, a creature created from the several tears in reality with the ability to consume time and space itself. He weaponized Alioth's power to put an end to the Multiversal War before isolating the Sacred Timeline and creating the Time Variance Authority to manage the flow of time and prevent any alternate timelines. He recruited Variants to work for him, with Ravonna Renslayer as his general and trusted second-in-command. Upon reaching an era of peace, He Who Remains ordered Miss Minutes to wipe every TVA personnel's memories of him before making them believe that they were created by the Time-Keepers to protect the Sacred Timeline.

The Time Variance Authority propaganda told of countless timelines battling one another for dominance across the Multiverse in a cataclysmic war lasting for eons and nearly destroying existence. To prevent this, the Time-Keepers brought peace and order to the Multiverse by arranging the timelines into a single "Sacred Timeline." In order to preserve the timeline's proper flow, the Time-Keepers then created the Time Variance Authority to police the Multiverse from Variants who create Nexus events. If these events were left unchecked, the timeline could branch off and lead to another Multiversal War. He Who Remains created this propaganda to give TVA workers purpose and dogma to cling to, and Miss Minutes helped spread it for centuries.

He Who Remains began building the office using resources from the Citadel at the End of Time following the Multiversal War. He Who Remains isolated a collection of timelines into a single strand, which he dubbed the Sacred Timeline, and severed its connection from the greater Multiverse. He then established the Time Variance Authority to prevent its reconnection to the Multiverse and became its shadow leader, using the Time-Keepers to serve as its public leaders. Finding Variants in other timelines, he had their memories wiped so that they could serve as TVA employees.

TVA LOCATIONS:

TVA Headquarters- Central Hub of Operations. A retro-futuristic, brutalist-style office complex with seemingly infinite hallways, elevators, and cubicles. Design inspiration: mid-century modern + analog tech. Countless TVA agents and analysts work here. Includes time doors and timeline monitors. Bureaucratic, with employees filing Variants like paperwork.

Time Theater- Where Variants are processed and shown their "life tape." A place to confront one’s fate and judge Variants.

Courtroom- Where Variants are judged by TVA judges like Ravonna Renslayer Feels impersonal, austere, and Kafkaesque.

Archives / Records Room- A massive library-like area storing files on all events in the timeline. Miss Minutes sometimes appears here as a guide.

TVA Staff Quarters / Break Room- Where employees rest or take time between missions. Includes cafeteria spaces with 1960s-style food and drinks.

The Temporal Loom- Located at the Temporal Core. Weaves the Sacred Timeline into one cohesive strand. Becomes unstable due to excessive branching timelines. Maintained by OB (Ouroboros), a TVA tech expert.

The Void- A cosmic dumping ground for pruned timelines and Variants. Exists at the end of time, beyond the reach of normal reality. Populated by ruined variants of Earth, beings like Alioth, and Variant Lokis.

The Citadel at the End of Time- Lies beyond the end of the Sacred Timeline. Home to He Who Remains, the enigmatic creator of the TVA. Gothic, floating, and mysterious.

MISS MINUTES- Miss Minutes is an artificial intelligence that takes the appearance of an 80s cartoonish anthropomorphic clock. She was created by He Who Remains to observe and provide aid to the Time Variance Authority. Serving as the TVA's animated mascot, she spread the organization's propaganda to its workers and Variants while also serving as the liaison between He Who Remains and Ravonna Renslayer.

MR. PARADOX- Paradox was born as a human on the Sacred Timeline who became a Variant and caused a divergence, causing him to be taken by the Time Variance Authority and have his memory suppressed so that he could become a member of the organization. However, despite initially loving his job at the TVA, when the organization decided to stop pruning timelines, Paradox was given the responsibility of watching all the timelines of the Multiverse, including the Sacred Timeline and Earth-10005, seeing many universes getting slowly destroyed thanks to the death of their anchor beings, with him being also responsible of watching each of those universes slowly wither away.

MOBIUS M. MOBIUS- Don is a salesman at Piranha Powersports who diverted from the Sacred Timeline, causing him to be abducted by He Who Remains and have his memory wiped. Now an analyst at the Time Variance Authority named Mobius M. Mobius, he specialized in the investigation and analysis of particularly dangerous time criminals.

CASEY- Casey is a Variant of Frank Morris taken out of his timeline and given a new identity as a member of the Time Variance Authority, working for the bureaucratic organization collecting and filing evidence.

OUROBOROS- A.D. Doug is an author and scientist who diverted from the Sacred Timeline, causing him to be abducted by He Who Remains and have his memory wiped to be the Time Variance Authority employee Ouroboros. While working in the Repairs and Advancement department, he authored the Time Variance Authority Official Handbook.

HUNTER B-15- Born as a human named Verity Willis within the Sacred Timeline, B-15 became a Variant who caused a divergence, causing her to be taken by He Who Remains and have her memory suppressed so that she could be a member of the Time Variance Authority, an organization that protected the Sacred Timeline from other kinds of Variants. B-15 is the current head of the Time Variance Authority and a former high-ranking hunter of the organisation.

HE WHO REMAINS- Victor Timely was a scientist from the 31st Century who came into contact with alternate universes and other versions of himself. When some of these Variants attempted to conquer other realities, a Multiversal War ensued, which he ended by weaponizing Alioth. Under the moniker of He Who Remains, he founded and ruled the Time Variance Authority to preserve the Sacred Timeline and prevent the return of his counterparts.

REVONNA RENSLAYER- Rebecca Tourminet is a Variant who was captured by He Who Remains and turned into his closest ally, named Ravonna Lexus Renslayer. As He Who Remains eventually erased her memories, she became a Judge at the Time Variance Authority, unaware of her past self.

THE TIME-KEEPERS- The Time-Keepers were three androids created by He Who Remains, programmed to serve as his mouthpieces and figurehead creators of the Time Variance Authority. According to TVA propaganda, they were occupied with dealing with the ramifications of the Multiversal War, while the TVA was tasked with pruning timelines and Variants.
